Since we know that Squid Game season 2 is coming at some point, I figured it was time to cover THAT theory. The "are Gi-Hun and Il-nam related" theory. It's been circulating for a little while and I felt like I needed to test the validity for myself and see if this could be the BIG TWIST of season 2. Theorists, get your game face on as we dive back into Squid Game!

Il Nam never actually said his son was allergic to milk. Just that he was similar to Gi Hun. I interpret this to mean that his son had the nerve to do something such as specifically requesting chocolate milk because he ‘couldn’t drink it’
His mom is single or divorced, they’re abt the same age and it isn’t a coincidence. Why are they so close then? No offense I think ur theory is great tho

The problem with comparing characters on a live-action show for genetic traits is that the actors are unrelated. No director is going to pick an actor based on whether or not he has a widows peak or attached earlobes.
I was thinking of saying the same thing, I feel like he just added that part to lengthen the video.
@@reaux1560 why would it be to lengthen the video if the video's length would be >8 minutes without that part anyways?

i'm pretty sure when Gi-Hun said his birthday in the end he lied so he could go back without them knowing it was him and than he could gain more information to try and end the games
This is an old video but I just want to point out that Gi-Hun‘s birthday is actually 31 October 1974 he even says it when he calls the number at the end and in the files when Jun-ho went through them
I think that Oh Il Nam could be his uncle, as the name means ' the first boy' and Gi hun's mother's name means 'the last girl', could be implying that Oh Il Nam and Oh Mal Soon are siblings.
Yeah that's what I was thinking
guau 😮
That seems more likely. In Korea, the wife maintains their family name even after marriage. Oh Il Nam couldn't have married Oh Mal Soon.
@@blizzard072 I didn't know this! Yeah this definitely makes sense.
But Korea isn't a very big country, many, many people have the same surname without being directly related right?
So if thats the case then both theories have some footing...
@@itsmefm You are right about many people having the same family name in Korea. To be specific and since you seem curious, family names that are pronounced the same can be differentiated by their family origin. For example, the most popular family name Kim (김) is actually a set of Kims from different originins such as the Kims from Gimhae (김해 김) and the Kims from Gyeongju (경주 김), which are treated as different family names. Nowdays you can marry anyone who is not closely related, even if they have the same family origin. However, at the time when Il Nam got married, you were not allowed to marry a person from the same family name + origin. Since the Oh (오) family name is dominated by a single family origin (i.e., 해주 오), it is likely that Il Nam and Mal Soon have the same family origin. That is why I think the theory the video claims is wrong. If the slightest chance that 001 and 465 is related is true, Il Nam must be the uncle or the grandfather.

I kinda read the "spanking cuz of the milk" thing as Gi-Yun constantly tried to trick people into giving him what he wanted, i.e. I want chocolate milk so I'm allergic to the regular kind
It’s kinda odd to talk about genetics in a show when both characters are actors and not related in real life, I don’t think they would cast on details down to the earlobe
Tea. The lead is a famous actor, and a couple of the others are well known in their own right. Just like America, Korea also casts based partially on popularity

2:22 ok, quick question: who says Wolverine is Deadpool? another point: as mat pointed out, in south korea, the family name is passed down to the child, so gi-hun could not be il-nam's son considering his name is seong gi-hun
I was thinking this when I watched this
@@Rigby86 yep, same here, tho saying il nam is gi hun' s uncle is more reasonable.
i might have misunderstood this comment and if i did , my bad. but, il-nam is not the family name. that is his personal name, oh is the family name. in korea, china and japan what in the west is a family (last) name goes first.
unless..
@@unheardstingray7048 I can confirm you misunderstood the comment. It's all right ;-)
It's more likely that Il nam is Gi hun's uncle. Gi hun's family name is Seong. Which means his dad must have the last name Seong too. So if Il nam and the mother has the same family name and naming convention, then this is the remaining option.
Ooh
Makes sense
Thats actually rlly smart!!
I was looking for a comment like this, I wonder if the slap game man that was in Train to Busan (I forgot his name clearly) could tie into this family theory.
Actually no even that doesn't work. A little background here: I play Genshin Impact which has 4 language dubs. So while I'm looking at the lore of that game I ended up looking into all kinds of culture and history based on these dubs besides the English one. That's Korean, Japanese and Chinese.
So there's this thing in China about given names that Korea also follows called the "generation name" where siblings share part of their name. So if Il-nam and Mal-soon were siblings then their names would be more like Il-nam and Mal-nam or Mal-nam and Mal-soon. I doubt those combinations make sense but you get the idea. For example Park Jung-Hoon, Park Jeong-Hoon, Park Sang-Hoon are siblings. They share the generation name Hoon. So even the uncle theory is out the window.
Rey's father was a clone of palpatine. Sort of a grandfather/half father

It’s important to remember that the creator wrote this 12 years ago as a movie and had almost no ideas for a sequel so it’s incredibly unlikely that he intentionally tried to foreshadow a future season
When you write a good story you’re supposed to know every detail about your character (forgot exactly which author said that) so they could piggy back off those details to make a sequel. That doesn’t mean the sequel will be good though😅
Bold of you to assume Netflix wouldn’t have left it open ended or had other writers on it? Everyone knows that if you want to be in tv, or storytelling as a business you always leave room for sequel
@Nimiji Antics that’s not necessarily all true because while I do agree with you that you always leave room for sequels but not every writer goes into it with those intentions. A lot of writers do their projects specifically written to be a one season type of project, not to mention they’re such things as open endings and Korean shows and movies are well known for having a lot of open endings to their properties. Director Hwang is a well known film director so he’s used to only doing one off projects.
Side note: Korean shows are mostly known for having one season to them with the exception of a handful of them out there that have multiple which is rare to see overall in the Korean tv industry. Unlike in the US where it’s a norm to see a multiple season series because their created that way from the beginning and the viewers in the states have the luxury of being spoiled with their favorite shows for many years, the same cannot be said about Korean shows and the western audiences need to be able to understand this and respect the way Korea does things, and not impose like I see in the comment section in various videos.
The story can be tweaked by Netflix to accommodate a sequel.
@@bre1081 The creator is not the only writer on the show the minute you decide to sign to a company you get a team of writers and consultants and like I said everyone knows to make room for the second season I’m sure Korea has plenty of multi seasons shows. But comparing Netflix to the Korean tv industry is kinda silly
By the way, Gi-hun's surname is Seong and not Oh, which means his father's surname is Seong as well unless Il-Nam is Gi-hun's stepfather. I would like to think Il-nam is related to Gi-hun maternally, as he has the same surname as Gi-hun's mother. Besides, Oh Il-nam's name meaning 'first boy' and Oh Mal-soon's name meaning 'last girl' sounds like they are siblings. Plus, it was prohibited to marry a person with the same surname in South Korea.
I was thinking this about his surname the whole time lol. Il-Nam being Gi-Hun's uncle makes a ton of sense.
I was about to say this as well.
In Korea, women keep their maiden last name. So Il-Nam and Mal-Soon being married due to surname being same is too far fetched.
However, Koreans can marry someone with same similar surname, as we have a lot of Kim's Park's Kang's and Lee's. But the surnames are Chinese characters meaning different things. So if the surname comes from the same character, then that's a problem.
So if ever Il-nam is related, the most plausible case is that Il-name is either his grandfather, or his uncle.
you already said it all but same surname marriage prohibition has been abolished long time ago.
Yeah I feel like he was the uncle of Gihun
Hahahha koreans can't marry people with same surname? Where did u get this nonsense?

the editing i really good for this video.
My father and my grandpa look similar to the famous duo, so it’s quite interesting and funny to me that a theory like this exists. Thank you Matt as I quite enjoyed watching this video!
The fact that Oh Il-Nam and Oh Mal-Soon share the same surname is actually the evidence that he is not the father of Gi-Hun. Because till March 2005 there was the Article 809 of the Korean Civil Code, which prohibited the marriage between individuals with the same surname. The surname is a sing that they are from the same clan and therefore would be "related", that was the belief for a long time.
Imangine if this was the cause in Veitnam, like 40 percent of the poplalution is named Nyguen or something(i didnt actaully check this is proably an overexagreation)
What about Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo. Both of them sharing the same surname Song, but they were married few years back?
I know this "same clan rule" applies to Malaysian Chinese family too but none of them really bother about it
I think there is an addition that they have to also be from the same paternal line and same ancestor area. Theres an insane amount of Kims, Lees and Parks in Korea and they are definitely not all related, over 10 000 000 people with the surname Kim. However the rule with same last name+paternal line+ancestry geo location was a lot stricter than most western societies where religion kinda thought it was ok as long as it was 3-5 generations apart.
I might be wrong but from what I understand this stems from the fact that before when most people didnt have surnames, only the important families/clans, the rest of the people were mostly sorted by where they were from. So when they decided to sort things out and everyone was picking their surname a lot of people just picked the surnames of existing important families, ending up with huge amount of people having the same surnames.
So people with Kim surnames cant marry?
@@OYG456 their marriage is past 2005 which is why it's okay. It is an older custom society grew out of with the population growing.
As many others have said before, I also think that Oh Il-Nam and Seong Gi-Hun are related, not as father and son, but as uncle and nephew.
In Korean culture, when you marry, it is not common for the wife to take the husband's last name. But the child/children do take the father's last name. Although Gi-Hun's mom's last name is Oh, like Oh Il-Nam's, Gi-Hun's last name is Seong, indicating that his father's last name is also Seong.

Never has a winner gone back and played for a second time. And never has there ever been more than one winner. So I don't think the show got gi-hun's birthday wrong in that final scene, I think gi-hun lied about his birthday so that he's not "the exact same person" who played before.
Same thing I was thinking
Except, that would be proven false considering they immediately recognized him and referenced him as "Player 456" before he boarded the plain. I'd argue that the Front Men (Assuming that it wasn't just In Ho who became the Front Man) kept tabs on all the winners since 1988. They also referenced Gi Hun's plan of going to LA and said to him "Please board the plane, it's for your own good." before Gi Hun turned back.

I once had 10 classmates all with the same last name. They were not related in any way. Last names mean squat in Korea because there is a high chance for you to have the same name with a random person across the street.
@@Galaxies3000 while I can't disagree with that, I still find it unlikely that they would "accidentally" create such a coincidence in a show. I'm sure the hints were intentional - whether that means they will actually pull a big twist reveal in S2, or just leave it as interesting connections is something else entirely, but I find it very hard to believe that Gi-Huns mother and his father figure sharing a family name and being named "first boy" and "last girl" was a complete coincidence that nobody working on the show noticed.
@@Galaxies3000 forget last name, their name first boy and last girl
@@haruyanto8085 that too, makes no significant difference. those are very common old names. Koreans didn't put much effort in naming in the past so they usually went for easy, simple names.
@@CaptainSweatpants90 those are very common old names. Koreans didn't put much effort in naming in the past so they usually went for easy, simple names. while it does seem a bit coincidental, it's not strong enough to be considered as evidence.
When you said all that evidence my first reaction was “are you just going to ignore the cultural aspects?” But I should have known better! Thanks for explaining the cultural aspects of Korean culture because I don’t think people here understand. As a Korean I am glad you debunked the reasoning ☺️.

He still wrong. They are related. Debunked the debunk
Me too.. but i know he will debunk it because he didnt elaborate on the points

Hearing you play the show in Dubbed threw me off lol. Gotta watch it with Subs my friends! Keeps the real emotion in it!

Il-nam clearly says “I raised my son”. Gy-hun would easily recognize the man who raised him.
#endtheory
Ok
nah, we still gonna do it
Not exactly, if you were really young (like baby young) and your father wasn’t there, then it’s possible that you wouldn’t recognize him 100% (especially if your father was also a really old person).
He literally says this in the video, what are you trying to point out?
He seems to have walked out of his familys life when he was very very very young. His mother hustles to make ends meet. When oh li nam was dying he only invited him to pay a visit....where was his actual family? He did seem that he wantes to leave the legacy behind to him in fact challenging him to see the world in his view. Why did oh li nam decide to play along the ball game as if he lost his mind, he could have easily got rid of him, was it because he has seen his kindness.
He doesn’t get in the plane in order to protect his daughter. He had just had his family threatened so he chooses to stay as far from his family as possible. That IS good father material.
Omg....guess it's been a sec since I've been here, love the jacksfilms inspired Morty song
14:05 can we just appreciate that mouth animation
Really would like to see that all the time when his image appears.
I liked the presenting of the theory and then calling out errors, I'd love that to be common place even with original theories
Yeah. That would be very very interesting indeed.
Do you not watch matpat? He literally does this ALL the time. Present some evidence, then debunk it later for entertainment purposes. It would be pretty boring if he just said they were wrong from the start without giving the full picture.
8:48 This makes a lot of sense, my friend has a family thing where every single person that got married, divorced. I just thought it was a funny little coincidence but that's cool to know.
When you compared the names I had the thought that if one is called First boy and the other is last girl, what if they were siblings. Il-nam could be his uncle, which would account for the genetic similarities, but also the fact the He doesn't remember him as his father.
I love how MatPat points out their earlobes as if the actors would’ve sewed their lobes onto their faces to avoid this theory if it weren’t true haha /lh
Want to add that Gi-hun’s name isn’t Oh Gi-hun, it’s Seong Gi-Hun, meaning his dads family name would’ve been Seong, because like you said the wife doesn’t take the family name of their husband up rather pass it on to their kids.
Yup i was suprised he brought the naming thing up and then not specifically this
The old man was the first person to play the squid games. Maybe the first winner. He won so much money, he kept coming back for more (but as a previous winner his life was never actually on the line). The main character is the last person to play the squid game, hence the meaning behind their names. Could be foreshadowing type beat
Waiting for season 2!!
The whole point of the relationship is that 456 reminds him of his son because they’re similar, not because it’s his son
To even add to the commonality of the last name Oh, the actor who plays 001 even has his actual last name as Oh.
Though I have to say the hand thing is kind of funny, as most left handed Asians use the right hand for eating and writing because of culture and various other reasons.

Exactly it’s not because Asians are less likely to be left handed, it’s just that when growing up you were never allowed to use your left hand and were forced to be right-handed.
Dude, you HAVE to do a theory on David Firth's 'Sock' series. It's everything Salad Fingers is, but on completely another level.
I think it’s more that these Easter eggs and connections relate to a father and son like connection, not a literal father and son link , so that the twist that 001 is behind it all hits more , 001 is like the father that 456 does not have , and 456 is like the son 001 once had
I would suggest that maybe Il-Nam is Gi-hun's uncle, what with the first son last daughter names. Would explain why they lived close by but didn't know each other. If Il-nam was actually older than Gi-huns mother by a few years he might have already left the alley behind with his work prior to Gi-hun being born or old enough to remember an uncle Il-nam
I was about to comment this exact thing when he mentioned name meanings xD
honestly a show i would love to see Mat cover is Alice in Borderland it’s a Japanese show on Netflix but it would be cool to hear his theory’s on it, it’s a similar show like Squid Game where it’s all a big game but with cards and it’s so well done it’s probably my favorite show at the moment
I personally liked Ali e in Borderland more than squid game. It has more focus on the games in alice in Borderland and I like that a lot. In squid game, usually about half the episodes are about the game and the other half is character development. I also personally thought the games in alice in Borderland was better, more unique and had more tension. However I do still like both shows.
Based on an anime which would also be another way to get information
It’s not even that deep to warrant a theory on
Same that is such a good show
Ok, SAMANTHA.😂😂😂

Watching the series, from the beginning after the old man mentioned his son, tha was the moment that thought crossed my mind too. Thought it would be too wild, but i could never get that theory out of my mind. I am SO suprised that no one else thought about this untill the girl on ticktock. What?? It was right there
I still wonder why Il-nam went out of his way to talk to Gi-hun near his home after the first game. I dont think there would be much of a reason to do so after just the first one.
Love how he spends time proving the theory to just disprove it. 10/10 method plot twist
Better than the squid game plot twist

The names il-nam and mal-soon being "first boy" and "last girl" may be referencing that il-nam is 001 and mal-soon was the last person to die in S1.
No mal-soon was not the last person to die in season 1 because after she died il-nam still died in the scene a year later.
I love cool theories like this, they're so fun, even if the lore and evidence disproves it.
How have I not subscribed in like the X amount years I've known of you... *subs*

Hey matpat you should make a song theory. I would love that and we would love that too!
Just an idea
when im watching matpat's videos i dont get creeped out of his horror like theories (the ones i see in the game theorists) by him. what gives me the chills is the bg music. just take a listen alright? good.
I love mat pats enthusiasm for everything he makes, this was great
The problem is when you look at genetics for a live action show to show similarities in characters, you are comparing genetics of the person in real life rather than their TV show counterpart. Therefore, making it unlikely that the directors chose those actors because they have similar features, although this can be argued for in a cartoon
honestly, if you're directing something and decide that two or more characters are going to be genetically related, they BEST look similar.
Please make a video on the theory about other squid games.
I love how even when he has a answer he keeps looking.
