Gravity Falls left us wanting so much more. Many of us took to the internet scrambling to see if there would be a season 3, but our hopes lead to a dead end. After Bill Cipher’s death, we were supposed to just accept that the series was over… but there was one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb to me. Another thing to note is in Season 2 Episode 15 at the very end. Bill is talking about how if he can't control anyone from inside the shack, then he'll take someone from outside the shack and his eye flashes througb all the citizens of Gravity Falls. The odd thing is that it immediately cuts to the upside down face of Grunkle Stan before ending the credits.

maybe after bill saying that before his death was sent back to the start of the summer into stan's mind and to play out the things which were supposed to happen its sort of like a time loop where bill tries to do something different at the end but due to time travel giving the same result no matter what you change bill always loses and go back to the starting of the shows (which explains why he and bill say a lot of things in common from the begging of the show)

Another Theory: What if Bill and Stan already made a deal before the Story started. I mean, what if he tried to restore the damage he gave to his brother but couldn't, and he made an agreement with Bill so he could get help while trying to get his brother back, maybe Ford knew about this, maybe that's why he hit Stan. I think this is true, because when Gideon asked Bill to Enter Stan's mind, BILL DID ENTER STANS MIND WITHOUT AN AGREEMENT, WHEN STAN WAS SLEEPING, When you think about it, why would Bill really enter Stan's mind? Maybe because Bill wanted to find The Book 1, the book stan had, to recreate the portal.

ya know, I wouldn't be too terribly thrilled. This is literally my favorite TV show of all time, yes, but the ending was perfect. I would rather have it end well sooner than be stretched too thin and the plot goes downhill and it ends poorly. I miss watching it when it was new to me, but I can always go back and see my favorite mystery peeps.

The show itself never ends. I’m saying this because who led Stan to go to the cave anyways? The show repeats, Bill cipher gets destroyed, comes back and then leads Stan to the cave to try do it again
i have a theroy that while bill isn’t dead, he isnt a threat anymore either. i believe that he instead lives inside stan’s mind, tormenting him whenever he has the chance (most likely when he’s sleeping) but that’s all he can do, bill will desperately try to make a deal for stan to get him out of his mind but stan knows better…and bill will be forced to live the rest of his existence in the grunkles mind.

A cool note: In the Axlotl's couplet, he says he ''watches from birch trees'', and Ford fell asleep in a forest of birches with knots on them looking like eyes, and while he is asleep he meets Bill for the first time. Just thought it was a cool detail.

After rewatching the whole thing on Disney+ (thank you random special interest reawakening), this seems highly likely, actually. In fact… I kinda wanted to point a couple other things out about this theory- both from the same episode.
So, the Mayor Election episode… You guys know the one. The one where Stan runs for mayor (and loses because of a hilariously long criminal record). When the Pines Twins tell Stan that they were mind controlling him, he didn’t seem all that phased by the fact he was mind controlled. He was more upset by the fact that it was Ford’s invention helping him win (he was still mad at Ford in general after the reveal episode). When they tested the product on Soos, Soos had a more reasonable reaction to doing and saying things unwillingly. We’d have expected this sort of thing from Stan too, but he didn’t react that way. It’s an interesting detail if we say- hypothetically- this theory is true, and that Bill really is still trapped in his head.
Ok- for context on what I mean here, in case I’m misinterpreting MatPat’s conclusion, Bill could be resurrected in Stan’s mind when Stan was still young, hence the “a different time” bit. That would mean the whole show is one big loop that constantly repeats yadda yadda you get the point.
Anyway, detail 2: Giddeon in that same episode. When Giddeon possesses Bud, he also speaks backwards. If speaking backwards only relates to Bill/Stan, then what if the mind control spell Giddeon uses is the same one Bill uses to get inside people’s heads? I mean- we don’t see Bill chanting anything when he does the same thing- but “Spooky Evil Spells” being repeated five times backwards by Giddeon? I might be jumping the gun here, but something tells me that Bill invented a way for mortals to do what he does and wrote it in Ford’s book. It makes me wonder if it was him trying to predict what was going to happen to him and he was trying to prepare himself for being trapped in a mortal body. Just a thought, really.

When bill cipher says his backward message. It really means that he will come back another day. Like how he mentions that he'll meet again some sunny day. It could be possible that after he was wiped off, He could have went into a different dimension. And it could also explain what bill has been doing before Gideon Summoned him

It is shown in the series on multiple occasions that Stan is the only one who cannot be tricked. This is why he's the best person to keep Bill inside his mind, not allowing him to escape or to trick him to do something. He keeps bill trapped and taking care of the others until the end of his life. What a hero.

The Axlotol (No clue if that is correct) says “Absolve his crime, a different form, a different time.” Absolve usually means to remove his crime or redemption for his crime (possibly weirdmagedon), a different form a different time if the Axlotol is an all powerful being as to grant wishes and we know time travel exists in the show could it be that Bill possibly became Stan and thats where all the similarities come in, calling Ford sixer, buying gold, and the song, could it be possible that Bill became Stan and only had vague memories of his former self so the universe could force him into fixing his mistakes?

Your almost spot on. If you read this, lmk. Bill destroyed his universe and his race as said in the third journal and at the beginning of the axolotls answer to dipper. His only way to redeem himself hence “absolve his crime” was to sacrifice himself for another universe. I’m conclusión it is an infinite loop in a way where he stops himself. That is why all the similarities come in. Stan also left his home and could never come back because of what he did to fords college bound future. It is all a cycle of bills reincarnation to redeem himself from burning his own home.
I like how logically this almost confirmed theory implies that Bill Cipher succeeded in an alternate reality.

This is a great theory, if the Axolotl sends Bill back in time as Stan and we see Stan defeating Bill who shares similarity with Stan, that could mean that Bill kills bill to save his "own" universe.

I know this was posted five years ago and this show isnt new, but my friends and I love rewatching things, especially Disney shows like SVTFOE and Gravity Falls. I was rewatching Gravity Falls and we were on the last episode when I thought about something. When they erased Stan's memory to get rid of Bill, that was supposed to erase everything, right? Well, when Stan's memory was brought back, that made me think- everything was supposed to be gone, so why and how is Stan's memory coming back? Wouldn't that mean with time, Bill could have a doorway to come back?

Another piece I could add to this theory in regards to bill going back in time:
When Grunkle Stan was arrested for stealing nuclear waste, he pleaded he was innocent, looking genuinely confused at the whole thing
The episode played it off as just another one of his secrets/lies but what if he was telling the truth??
1) the nuclear waste was stolen at NIGHT
2) the entire time he’s stealing the waste he’s covered up so you can’t tell whether his eyes or normal
3) the only evidence we have that it’s him is his voice and cursing but we already know bill can imitate voices
4) Stan stealing the waste and activating the portal was the start of bill’s weirdmageddon and what brought him in here the first place

WHAT ABOUT THE AXOLOTL LORE? Bill Ciphers Death Message may have seemed like a bunch weird sounds but he actually says something if you reverse it. He says AXOLOTL My time has come to burn I invoke the ancient power I may return. Now in the comics or online it shows some information about this creature. Like one outside of the Gravity Falls reality but still somehow linked to it.
Grunkle Stan also wears an eyepatch when he's showing tourists around the Mystery Shack, making it look like he only has one eye. Just like Bill Cipher.
