I'm sorry, are we just going to ignore the fact that in The Santa Clause's universe, killing Santa is apparently a perfectly acceptable way to become Santa? How many of those past 50 or so Santas have been cold-blooded killers?
So it's done by Klingon Promotion standards. Was the original Santa a Proud Warrior Race Guy?
With how much noise he made, it's also very possible that this was suicide. Either so depressed he didn't care anymore and didn't try to hide so someone would end it, or going "Yeah this scrooge would annoy Bernard, I'll make sure he notices me."

Tbf this might just be my family but we didn't have a chimney when I was a child so we had a big fake magic key that we left In the back garden for santa to get in so he not breaking into every house atleast
@@willwh9228 That's actually a really great tradition. I had always heard some version of "one kind of appears" or "he has his way" sort of thing; but a Santa key is adorable.
To be fair, the Elves in this movie are very accurate depiction of Elves from folklore. They are cute, magical, live much longer than humans, trick people into contracts and mess with humans for their own amusement.
Their ancestors are indigenous to the Feywild, after all.

@@IceMetalPunk That's why parents back in the day would have house rules like "keep your elbows off the table" or "don't/do wear shoes inside." So you see if the Fae ever break one of these rules you can make their contract void by saying "This is my house my rules" which parents say almost all the time, so you see if the Fae follow even the smallest rules they would have to recognize the authority the parent has over the house/household so by that logic any contracts a Fae makes in a house would have to abide by the authority of the parent/whoever came up with the house rules...so by that logic the parent could say that any contracts the Fae has is unacknowledged in the house/household therefore making the contract void in the house......... theoretically.

The fae are indeed neither orderly or chaotic. Mischievous and acts on a whim, but even they have someone to answer to make sure they don't turn on one another.

I was just thinking about that yesterday myself!
There are roughly 10 years between the first and second movies. This means, that Santa has about 10 years to get married. Why the elves warned him with 28 days left, I don't know but that is another issue. If Santa really does have such a high turnover rate, it could be that the previous Santa dies within those 10 years and hadn't got married yet.

What if the "death" of a Santa is like being fired from a job, and the Santa in question just returns to their previous life? Not sure if it is ever explained so this would make me feel better about the logic in these films since I grew up with them.

I thought these were horror movies just covered in sugar when I was a teen. Dude accidentally kills santa, forced to become santa, loses connection with his family and friends, and he had to make someone go through almost the same thing just so she can be his wife. To top it all off, he has to pretend he's enjoying it so he doesn't become super depressed (which we all know how that would go).

Maybe that’s why the grinch wanted to steal Christmas, he’s just a OSAH inspector who wanted to save Scott from the elves.
There are 3 different kinds of Santas,
The ones who live in harmony with the elves
The one who gets enslaved by the elves
And the ones who kidnap children to be turned into elves
In the Santa Clause, Scott basically also gets his whole personality changed during the eleven months after he becomes Santa. So we can put the elves up for brainwashing as well.

Okay, so MatPat didn't completely ruin my childhood(cause this was/is one of my favorite Christmas movies) but he gave it a solid beating. I'll admit, watching these movies as an adult, I had started to question how wholesome this series was. I mean, accident or not, Scott did cause the death of Santa, none of the elves seemed at all, bothered that the old Santa was gone, where was the old Mrs. Clause? And, now, I'm questioning why any new Santa has to completely give up their previous life. The elves make the toys, care for the reindeer, keep up the sleigh, etc. They've been doing this for years(centuries even). The only thing they can't(or won't) do, is deliver the toys to all the children around the world. The Santa does that. That's one night around the world. So, 24 hours. Why does he have to stay at the North Pole for the rest of the year? I mean, even if they need to have him come in before Christmas for his suit fitting, how early does that need to be? Early or Mid-November? What reason, other than to have complete control over him, is there for demanding that Santa BE Santa 24/7?

This is literally the only time one of matpat's theories has actually "ruined my childhood", I loved the movies as a kid but I'll never unsee Scotts pain and a forced marriage now
Even as a kid, when I watched this movie, it didn't feel right. It's one thing to be Santa for one Christmas, but to be forced to be him for the rest of your life doesn't seem right

It’s possible that the last Santa before Scott just hadn’t been Santa long enough to invoke the “Mrs Clause”. 10 years pass between the 1st and 2nd movies, meaning that from the time Scott became Santa, he had 10 years to find a Mrs. Clause. He just wasn’t told for 9 years and 11 months 😅
But what about all the other Santas, I mean Scott can't be the only one to survive for 10 years. The idea of Mrs. Clause had existed long ago. And what does Mrs. Clause has anything to do with Christmas? She's just Santa's wife, and that's it. So what happens to Mrs. Clause, is she is forced to marry the new Santa?

Assuming "Santa" has been operating like this since the 4th century, and that there have in fact been more than 50 of them before this current Santa, that means the average operational lifespan of any one Santa is less than 33 years! Given that the Elves are practically immortal, no wonder they're not particularly attached to any one Santa!

You know, I loved these movies as a kid (I actually hated the third one, it just wasn't for me), and I did question the rules they had in play, I felt bad for Santa, but I still loved them cause they were interesting to me.

My theory on that is that Mrs. Claus disappears the moment Santa Claus does, so the elves had warning that Santa had died several hours before Scott arrived. Their indifference about it implies to me that they didn't like the old Santa much.
i think as kids we just assume "the elves are magical as well as having a lot of technology" so they probably know/sense the old santa has died and that theres a newbie coming. so while Scott is finishing Santa's delivers the elves are dealing with the loss of the previous santa.
P.S. not to mention the timey wimey influence of santas sleigh might have something to do with it"
I think you're forgetting just one timy detail MatPat. The fact that the elves and the santa clause was around longer then Osha. The north pole is basically it's own country with its own laws and I dont think Osha can just go there and impose their own laws onto them.

Film theory question for possible future video: would the movie 'zathura' be possible? I know the magic board game part is impossible, but what I'm wondering is about how they are breathing in space? Where is the gravitational pull? And how long would they have lasted in space (simply based on the average amount of food in a fridge and/or pantry in a house of 3 humans and a hamster). And also, how do they feel temperature in space?
I realized when I was a little lad and believed in Santa that if Santa gives presents by breaking and entering, shouldn't the police arrest him, or does he bribe the police with presents
Santa literally is arrested in the Santa Clause 1. In fact, he is busted out of jail by a team of elves (Effective Liberating Flight Squad, or E.L.F.S.). Given that a team of elves dedicated to Santa rescue is nessary, I'm guessing Santa's been arrested before.
The major problem with the whole Clause part is that this contract magically alters his physical appearance thus the contract is magic itself. Thus not subject to those laws and regulations that are based on the non magical world.
But if magic happens in the world, I'm pretty sure they still fall under some laws and some laws have to be updated to cover crimes done by magic. so I'm pretty sure being forced to do something or something being forced on you still falls under some law even though its magic

Fun fact! The Santa depicted at 8:18 is more a picture of "Sinterklaas" than "Santa Claus". He is the Dutch/Belgian version of Saint Nicholas, who gives present to the children on the 5th/6th of December instead of during Christmas. He is usually shown with his staff(like in the picture in the video) and has a more slim body type than the American Santa Claus

i think the mrs clause only comes into effect after like 8 years of being santa, and considering the elves in the second movie had no idea about the clause until the 900+ year old elf found out leads me to believe that no santa survived long enough for that clause to come into effect meaning theres been so many santas within that elf's 900+ year life that never made it long enough to have to deal with that, hence none of the elves knowing it was a thing anymore, which is even more chilling

I've been hoping basically since the creation of this channel for a theory on The Santa Clause- favorite holiday movie series growing up that just leaves SO MANY QUESTIONS and is INCREDIBLY MORALLY DUBIOUS the more you think about it!! Loved the theory.
And that, kids, is why WE NEVER MAKE ANY CONTACT WITH FAE CREATURES LIKE ELVES. It would be so cool if they revealed in the fourth movie the source of all this Santa business- imagine Scott Calvin fighting Oberon or Freyr or something. IMAGINE!
He’s basically broken into billions of houses every year
3 things:
1. The existence of “The Escape Clause” invalidates the contract argument since, being fully aware of the contract, Scott can (and accidentally does) nullify the contract.
2. My theory on why the elves are not upset with Fallen Santa’s death is that the previous Santa married an Elf as his Mrs. Claus!!! That elf returns to normal life afterwards and no one is upset with it. This is why Judy saids, “Thanks, but I’m seeing someone in wrapping.”, she KNOWS about the Mrs. Clause and is stopping what she expects is Scott trying to fulfill it BECAUSE THATS WHAT THE LAST SANTA DID!!!
3. Also, it seems that the “Mrs. Clause” is much more lenient on the time crunch, giving around 10 years for Santa to get married. Which isn’t a problem until you have forgotten about it for 9 years and 11 months.

The actual math for that would be extremely interesting because you have to keep in mind that in quite a few countries, there may not even be those that celebrate Christmas. Which would mean that not only can you skip houses, but you possibly skip out on ENTIRE COUNTRIES. Remember, Christmas is celebrated with relation to Christianity, which means even those that celebrate Christmas as a family gathering holiday and aren't actually Christian, wouldn't receive presents from Santa anyway.

I thought you were going to do something else than just going through Santa Clause's movies (maybe an idea for another episode?): I thought you were going to count how many kids are in the world and how much fabric space would be needed to supply all those gifts and if that would fit in the north pole area without being detected, and then calculate the work condition for so many elfs, etc. Kind of like what you did with the Dead Star once.

That 'Santa Claus' you see, is actually Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas was originally created in The Netherlands to make little children listen to their parents. If those kids didn't listen, he would put you in his sack and take you to Spain, nothing else.
Nowadays it did change, sort of. If you are a well-behaved kid, he will grant you gifts, but if you haven't been a good kid, there's a possibility Sinterklaas will take you to Spain with him, only for you to never return to your home for another forty years (that's at least what your parents make you believe, and trust me, from my experiences it's absolutely terrifying).
