You book it as far away from other players as physically possible
Way easier to take on one person you found in the woods than a group of 3 people while also worrying about the 7 others who are like 2 feet away and might decide to shank you at any time without warning

Fun fact: The girl that died from eating poison berries was seen in the film studying which berroes and plants are poisonous, which some fans have taken as a sign of deliberate intent to commit suicide.

Couldn't you just eat every berry you found?
Lilliath No, some berries are VERY poisonous. Berries are basically plant fetuses - hence why they contain seeds. Not all plants find the idea of being eaten appealing (though some like it a LOT, case in point the tomato), while some plants like the idea of killing animals for nutrients (case in point, the Venus Fly Trap). Poisonous berries have the advantage of killing the thing that eats them - either for defense, or to create free compost for the seeds to grow in.
And the worst part? There are not a lot of visual indicators for whether or not a berry is poisonous, hence why some survival experts recommend avoiding wild berries.
Lilliath Because there are *few* signs, not *no* signs. IF you know what to look for, you can eat wild berries. But a layperson isn't likely to know such. It's good survival sense to know which are poisonous and which aren't.
I don't buy the suicide theory.
Other than bulking up on food before the games, Foxface is shown to have knowledge of the plants to eat, avoiding the cornucopia, and focused on avoiding fightings and focusing instead on surviving, scavenging, and sabotage.
She made it to fourth place. It makes no sense to commit suicide once you've statistically got a 25% chance to win. Her survival skills may have been lacking, leaving her weakened and starving, but at that point there's no reason to quit. Worst case scenario you keep poison berries on your person, so if you find yourself in a situation where a brutal death is likely, you can instead give yourself a less violent death.
I assume she simply was hungry and desperate and assumed they wouldn't be stupid enough to collect poisonous berries.

That's some weak ass poison, if a little stomach dilution can render it harmless. A poison that weak would probably result in a long and painful death without stomach dilution.. less painful to just strangulate yourself with a belt or hug a career.
3:04 The tributes have varying ages because the 75th pulled victors of all ages (E.G Mags was elderly because she won the 11th games when she was a teenager & Katniss is only 17 fighting a bunch of adults in the 75th hunger games because she won only a year ago)
yeah, and to date the youngest victor ever was finnick at 14, so if you're aged 12-14 you're statistically already dead, i really don't get where he pulled all this just straight up incorrect information from? same with district based odds, he's just straight up wrong since according to the books the career districts *do* have the most victors, and let's be real, how weird would it be if a 17-18 year old that trained their whole life had the same survival chance as a staved 12 year old

Knives are cool and all but I’d rather tie it to the end of a stick. Spears and polearms have been hunting tools and battlefield weapons since before the Bronze Age, and they’re also relatively easy to learn compared to other weapons.
If you have a time crunch and have to become proficient in a weapon in a very little amount of time, my bet is spear. they also have a range advantage too so everyone with their tiny little knives aren’t gonna be able to reach you before you reach them

Instead of flat-out running from the cornucopia, I would run away and then hide in the bushes or other natural camouflage , wait till things calm down and everyone's gone, and loot the remains, chances are the dead tributes have something on them and the cornucopia still has some supplies left.
I love how you dissed peta’s fingerpainting at the start of the episode and then recommended practicing camouflage in the gym lol😅. And you can’t really just happen upon a dead body because the capitol removes them with hovercrafts almost immediately after they die.

But in fact the youngest victor, and he majorly won because not only he's a good fighter, but he also very good looking that he able to get so many sponsors to support him, he even manage to get a trident as a sponsor and it was mention as one of the most expensive item to ever sent into the arena.
So yeah not only there's no 12 yo tribute to ever win the game, but also the youngest victor which is 14 yo mainly won it because of sponsorships.

Age does matter. A 12 or 13 year old isn’t going to have the strength or the size to compete with full-grown teenagers, generally. And they will have significantly less training with weapons or with general knowledge of plants or survival. Not to mention the fact that such young tributes are going to find it almost impossible to get any sponsors or allies in the arena because they have such a small chance of winning. Most other tributes and sponsors will consider them to be death fodder before they even have the chance to step foot in the arena.
That’s not even mentioning the theoretical young districts from places like District 11 or 12, both places where prospective tributes aren’t really taught to hunt or fight and usually don’t even know much about vegetation either. They’re basically dead on-arrival unless they can hide the entire time, get lucky and use something like poison or traps to stay alive, and avoid being killed by hazards from the Capitol.
Even at that, you’d still have to fight the last tribute to the death, who would likely be much bigger than you and much more experienced with weapons. Your chances of winning are still abysmal, because they’ll be even more on their guard and you’re their only target left.
How to survive:

I swore i wouldn’t watch a film/game/food/style theory video until my emotions settled down, and i didn’t wana cry to the realisation that matpat is leaving us, BUT IM TOO OBSESSED WITH THE HUNGER GAMES TO NOT SEE THIS
You can almost never lose with this strategy: a little while before the game starts you are on platforms that if you step off too early you go boom boom so you can wear alot of excess clothes to take off ball up and throw at them, making the quickest hunger games ever and say "thats all folks"
Well there is a few things you need to first get a good personality think of it as a reality show you need to make yourself a fan favorite
You can’t choose your clothes they give them to you
That’ll stall you from getting off your platform though. And everyone who does jump off will immediately be gunning for you for playing such a dirty trick. You won’t be able to get away unless you’re faster than all of them.
Also, you wouldn’t have enough clothes to do this to all of your rival tributes.
A way to always survive:

Honestly to me the biggest challenge of the hunger games is the psychological aspects. Sure you might be incredibly athletic, strategic, or even just plain lucky, but when it comes down to it chances are you’re gonna have to get your hands dirty at least once during these competitions, and didn’t complete honesty I don’t know if I’d be able to do that.
Coming back to this years later, and in these 2 episodes, MatPat misses something extremely important. The story that you want to build around yourself is EXTREMELY different depending on where you're from. The poorer districts' tributes would BENEFIT from volunteering as it's unheard of before the 74th games and it makes everyone sympathise with Katniss, whereas in the richer districts it's EXPECTED for people to do so, so if you're form a career district, you just wanna go out there to make sure everyone knows your strength from the get-go, so you either make yourself as intimidating as possible to look most likely to be the betting favourite, or make people send your stuff through self-presentation to tell a narrative, if you're form a lower district
Haymitch won because he was one of the first to the Cornucopia, grabbing a knife and supply bag. Any food in the arena that wasn't in a supply bag was poisoned.

@@niconico9358 He was participating in 50th Hunger Games and only because of that, the arena had a special, unique rules: it was beautiful, but everything was deadly - flowers, squirrels, food and more. So yeah, pretty much a one time thing.
In the 50th games he won by using the barrier to reflect an axe.
Not all was poisonous, but everything that looked like safe to eat was poisoned, rain was safe to drink and there was something safe to eat if i remember right

@@dropssky yeah, i'd lowkey love to know where he got his information from, because according to everything we are told in the books that whole part of the video is just straight up wrong? district has a heavy influence, and age makes it statistically impossible for like 40% of the possible tribute pool? (it wouldn't be 40% of the actual tributes since the older tributes are more common, in the career/wealthier districts bc they have volunteers, and in the poorer district because of the vote accumulation from the tesserae)
@@xyecho Exactly, we literally get told districts 1,2, 4, have advantages because they train their kids up untill their 18 or lethal and send them in. And I can imagine because of their industries, districts 7, 11 (and possibly 10 and 3) would have an advantage as well but to a lesser degree. Also, it took 64 years for a 14 year old (Finnick) to win the games which is still is a full 2 years ahead of the earliest age you can be reaped at 12 shows you age is absolutely important as well as what district you're from

Yeah his worst two videos as you can't use statistics for the Hunger Games; the writer couldn't be arsed to write the outcome for all 75 games. And as the 75th game only had victors that means out of the 30 know Victor's there's obviously going to be a disapropiate amount of non career Victor's. So to create startegys based on statistics when they obviously don't paint the full picture is idiotic.

I actually saw this super genius idea (I didn’t come up with it, just sharing) but if you took the poisonous berries from the first book, and put them in empty parachutes from sponsors and drop them near tributes, they will think they’re sponsors sent them food and die. Another option would be to “accidentally” drop the berries when running from someone, the tribute will think it’s real food and eat them
It would be a pain to get your hands on the sponsor capsules, since tributes took them for storage or a cooking utensil as seen when Katniss used it to make a soup.

It's a little insane to think that 6 years ago I watched this video with my sister" the first one of any of your videos we had watched. and now we're both addicted to all of your channels, and your videos have made a massive impact on my life; they made me remember why I loved science and helped me discoverer many passions of mine. time really flies and I feel kind of old now.
One thing about the Careers: they’re taught how to fight, but survival skills are not part of that. Their training is based on the idea that they won’t Need To Last, that they’ll completely sweep the competition through fighting (and otherwise relying on the cornucopia)

Always been one of my favourite Film Theories. Been on a binge ever since the final theory released, and I'm reliving my life all over again
The best weapon you can learn is the spear. Your odds of getting on are 2 in 25 because of the trident, and if you don’t get one it’s probably the easiest weapon to make sense it’s just a pokey stick. Besides the spear is the best weapon you can get in the cornucopia, the only weapon that might be bettered the bow
Followed by the sling. Requires little skill to master and make. Ammunition is easy to find and compact enough to not hinder your daily work unlike the bow.

I also feel like it would be good to be from a lower district like District 12 because they already don't get much food so they know how to survive with little to no food so it's easier once their in the arena with no food
It wouldn’t be good in general tho, like I get your point but there’s a reason why districts 1, 2 and 4 win the most almost every year, especially districts 2 and why district 12 only had 2 victors before katniss and Peeta in 74 years. It sounds like a good idea to say for the hunger aspect, but when you look at the statics of the winners, unless you play it really smart or are lucky with getting rid of the careers food they’d be way ahead of you
when it comes to careers, katniss alone killed 2 out of the 4 in the 74th games. Even so, 2 out of the 5 remaining tributes were careers. Half of them made it to top 5, one of them to top 3, if that doesn’t show an unequal chance of winer I don’t know what does.

One thing you could do is for the item your aloud to bring in to the area take a bag of marbles and when the game countdown starts throw them right next to a couple extra tribute tiles that blow up with little pressure so 2 of the tributes are gone befor the game even starts

But where does it say that muscular people are considered attractive in the Capitol? How many people do you see unable to reach their own backs due to their muscles? It's highly unlikely that strength contributes to beauty much in the Capitol; besides, this is the future, there are probably a ton of different options to appear strong without actually being strong.

No, you have to be a normal weight person with enough strength to climb, who happens to put on some calories a few days before hand. If someone can tell you've put on weight than you have fucked up.
That said, in a survival situation you want wiry strength from lean muscle mass (I.E. no bulk). If you've ever noticed, people that do a lot of strength everyday because of their job are rarely bulked up. This is because while strength is important so is speed and endurance. Both of which take a hit when you bulk up.
If being bulked actually helped you survive in life then natural selection would have taken place and most people would have a lot of strength. In actuality, being nimble and brimming with stamina are better.
