    Today's episode promises to be CRAPPIER than ever - because we're talking about The Martian. That's no judgement on the movie, it's just that the film is ACTUALLY full of poop and poop science. But the question is...is the poop science actually a load of crap? Hold your nose and dive in to discover if it is actually possible for Watney to survive on Mars like the movie portrays.

      That's because 99% of science is a theory. If it's not a scientific theory it's a law(ex. Law of gravity). However that being said even scientific laws can be changed. Nothing in science is fact.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 Před 4 lety +13

      Bonquiqui Rivera Well, that's not quite true. The National Academy of Sciences has a definition, which is the universal convention for scientific study, for "scientific fact," and it can formulated rigorously. And such scientific facts exist. Many theories correspond to some fact. For example, the theory of evolution is the set of scientific models supported by overwhelming evidence that throughly explains and carefully predicts the fact of evolution and its mechanisms. Similarly, there is the fact of the existence of gravity, and then there are theories of gravity, the first being by Newton, and then being superseded by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which will in the future probably be superseded by the quantum theory of gravity, when we find it. So, facts do exist in science. Their meaning is more strict than they are colloquially, though.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 Před 4 lety +5

      Gabriel Causaren If it's supported by evidence, then by definition, it isn't an opinion. At worst, it's merely hypothesis, at medium, it's a coherent theory, and at best, it's actually a fact, which will be determined if we ever terraform Mars or not, which would be the video-game equivalent of canonizing the theory.

    25mph gusts of wind have a greater affect when you've only got 38% of Earth's gravity to hold you down. Might want to factor that in.

    • @thedarkknight6799
      @thedarkknight6799 Před 8 lety +25

      It probably would have three times the effect because it would feel like 75 mph.

    • @Mstamp176BlogspotUk
      @Mstamp176BlogspotUk Před 8 lety +32

      +Willaev NSort of. You're being pelted with material that is half the weight it would be on Earth. And possibly also less material in general as the really thin and weak atmosphere (the Martian surface atmosphere is about 0.6-0-1% the density of Earth's) will not have the kind of power to carry as much debris.
      For the atmosphere alone, F=1ma > F=0.006ma. What's that going to do to the amount or size of debris a Martian wind can pick up?

    • @efrszcvzvre
      @efrszcvzvre Před 8 lety +2

      +Mark's Moving Arts but we have sand storm, that increases density of atmosphere there. But I'm pretty sure even that wouldn't tear satelite dish, mounted with steel bolts.

    • @peepingtom9342
      @peepingtom9342 Před 8 lety +7

      +Willaev Nope. Momentum of dust/wind is what is important (momentum equals velocity multiplied by mass) and though velocity is the same as on Earth due to lesser density the same volume of martian atmosphere has lesser mass thus momentum is much smaller. Gravity has nothing to do with it, it only adds vertical component of acceleration to any particle of air/dust.

      Павел Таранов It wouldn't be enough no. Curiosity has been on Mars for almost four years, scales and weighs in at just smaller than and as heavy as a small car. If Mars' storms could tip an 80-ton rocket or rip off an antenna dish, then Curiosity should be scrap by now, right?

    • @aoifekeating1013
      @aoifekeating1013 Před 5 lety +16

      whatwhen999 ino there was food IN the country (eg carrots other veg and fruit) and it was being shipped to England (for wealthy landlords) from ports in cork and Dublin while the Irish people starved to death. The British prime minister eventually sent I believe a type of corn but gave no instruction on how to cook it so the Irish ate it raw or cooked it improperly which made it inedible and finally a tribe in India actually sent the Irish food and supplies but before the food could get to the Irish guess who stole it. The British. therefore committing the largest genocide in Irish history but many people still call it a famine.

    • @anonwa4309
      @anonwa4309 Před 5 lety +9

      Aoife Keating here in the US, we learn it was a potato “famine” yet we never learn the actual cause of it. as a student, we just kinda assumed a natural pathogen, or a drought caused it. however, we do learn how horribly irish immigrants were treated in the US. not only could they not get jobs anywere but the places no one wanted to work (people who used TNT to clear the way for railroads, skyscraper construction, etc). they were essentially killed trying to make minimum wage.

      But how much time does he really spend outside? Seems that the vast vast vast majority of his time is spent inside and a large chunk of that in a room with a dirt floor... Then you have to look at it as an average, and that day the room blew up is probably going to skew the average a bit higher.
      At any rate the point is moot since what was given was really a worst case scenario which was found to be pretty much harmless so anything that lowers exposure doesn't really change the conclusion.

However in the book he actually had to cover the entire surface of the floor and the 5 other bunks of his crew ages and some lab tables to no matter where he went he was inhaling it. Also he was only using the helmets for working outside as he only had a limited amount of suit filters.

    Hey MattPat, I had an idea for you for a new film theory that I was thinking about while jamming to"I need a hero"
    Shrek theory: this theory rotates in particular around the curse placed on Princess Fiona, or to be specific who placed it on her. We see a lot of witches and even a wizard thrown around in the series, but hardly do they actually do anything to that degree. My hot take was that it was none other than her Fairy God Mother. More so, that this was due to an arrangement made with her own Father to try to ensure that they could get Prince Charming and Fiona to get together, that the original arrangements for this potential marriage goes back all the way to before Fiona is born

      Not really, radiation does not work like that.
      You might have got that idea from hearing about things near chernobyl becoming radioactive, but that was because they got radioactive *material* spread over them, not because they were irradiated.
      Some compounds do become slightly radioactive after being irradiated, but you need an awful lot of radiation to do that, and when you do they usually have a short half-life so don't stay radioactive for long.

And a martian day is a little longer than and earth day which is why they are referred to as sols. But the movie had to save time somewhere and that was in the literal "this is the math", "this is the history" of why this works.
