The Walking Dead may not be the biggest threat to Rick and his posse. In fact, it may be themselves and the way they handle their guns. I'm almost positive that over time Rick and the others have suffered severe hearing damage, which explains why those walkers have such an easy time sneaking up on them. Fear the Walking Dead. I had the same theory before.
There was a scene where one of them is standing still in a forest, looking through a night vision scope, slowly turning around... and there's suddenly a zombie one step in front of her. And it remained 100% silent right until the moment it got into frame. Imagine how hard it would be for a living person to sneak up to an alerted guard, in the forest, without stepping on a million branches and leaves.
Scene 1:
Rick shoots gun
Walker dies.
Wheres Carl?
Carl is in the forest.
Walkers are in forest.
Andrea falls down again.
Rick saves Andrea.
END.
If you think they are losing their hearing, then they also must be loosing their sense of smell on the show. I can't count the amount of times they are in a confined room or indoors in general and are caught off guard by a walker.
Folks, ROTTING CORPSES leave odor. If you walk into a room and it smells of rotting flesh --- a "walker" is near by.
True, maybe they are just so used to it, that they can't really distinguish the smell of corpses and anything else. I mean, isn't the place covered with them? So they are bound to smell them everywhere?

Sarah Black Well yes and no, long exposure in a constant smell would eventually fade a tinge. But rotting anything will always have a distinct smell. They aren't always surrounded by them, there are quite a few time they enter a building while not being chased or having a walker in site only to go into a confined space with a walker. You'd smell it right away. Esoecially if all the doors and windows were closed prior.

My uncle is a veteran and has permanent hearing loss and a very loud constant ringing in his ears from where a grenade blew up near him.
Same for my dad he was clearing a building when he was a police officer (he is now retired) and a hatch dropped a grenade into the next room. Before my dad could even yell the grenade blew up and he woke up OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. And as a result my dad is almost deaf in one ear and hears a constant ringing in that ear.
Sometimes I wonder if there’s a possibility of building a tree house and living in it because I doubt that the zombies get the concept of a ladder

Well why not a underwater base? It is pheasable and you could build a complicated entrance system like you would dive in the base because zombies can't swim or at least they won't float.
Except intertwined with all of these "surprise zombie" scenes are numerous scenes wherein characters whisper entire conversations without constantly mishearing each other.

Matt. You're right. Even wearing ear protection firing a .40 it still damaged my hearing. I used ear plugs, the most viable and common protection they could find. After an hour of shooting I had trouble hearing for a few days.

Something cool I learned from the comics is each of the nicknames given to the zombies have their own meanings.
A lot of the zombies shamble together in crowds and slowly make their way across long distances, so these are dubbed 'walkers'. Then the ones that stray away for one reason or another are called 'roamers'. And the ones you see snapping their jaws they called 'biters'. I think there were more as well that were explained too. :D

My dad was in the army and his hearing is terribly damaged even with military grade earplugs. Nearly the entire group would be almost completely deaf by now.

Watching this bc I’m rewatching the walking dead, but this reminds me; at one point, Daryl is able to differentiate between walker footsteps and human footsteps (sometime during either the 5th or 6th season it is talked about). If he had considerably lost his hearing like the others have, he wouldn’t be able to do things like that. Having the crossbow instead of a gun helps him MORE with his tracking skills

Not at all. Walking dead is still one of the top shows on tv. It could be much better though. Negans censorship will likely destroy it though. More viewers also dulls the show somewhat because there are a lot more casual viewers that keep character developement from progressing for more air time, etc. HBO turning it down because of violence is bullshit.

In the show castle rock a character had a gun shot RIGHT NEXT TO THE EAR. He had hearing loss and ringing in his ears as well a massive bandage around his head for the next 5 episodes.

they called them walkers because orginally, they walked really slowly. they slowly startong getting faster throughtout the series. they even mention it

Those were "fresh zombies", when you get converted you keep your habits but with the time these get vanished.
Speaking about velocity, they in fact walk slow but when they see you the get "excited" so they become faster but in a normal way as any person (they are still "living beings" with behaviors, reactions, etc).
Finally they can not walk for ever a body in function needs to spend energy so they burn they own organism (in the same way that the people does when they get trapped in a cave, island, etc)
I bet every time you give a theory about finishing the walking dead , Robert Kirkman decide to continue and finish the story as different as it can from your theories and possibilities.. 😂😂😂

they practice shooting off set, and I watched a behind the scenes where they put like some sort of ammo where it just makes flashes when they shoot, but doesnt shoot anything out. Then they make it louder, add effects and stuff. Not really good with gun knowledge but yeah.

My friends and I would always have conversations about how we would realistically survive a zombie apocalypse, when it came to weaponry they would all choose a firearm of some sort. I would always go with my bow and axe, looks like I chose wisely

I always thought this was weird. How come the zombies make 0 sound when they are off camera. In a lot of scenes the zombie pops around the corner or they pop up right behind the characters, and they make no sound before you see them.

I shot a tiny target pistol at an indoor range without hearing protection. I had my handguns lined up from 22 to 44 to see what is unbearable. I couldn't hear for half an hour from the 22. Admittedly indoor ranges are an echo chamber, but still, a 22 fucking wrecked me I couldn't step up to the next shot because I didn't want to risk my hearing.
What a stupid experiment to do, you could've easily built an on rail system and fired the shots from a far away distance with a pulley system or just used a decibel recorder. Jesus...

i agree with bane since if you put a silencer on guns then you can use them to pick off walkers silently and also keep your hearing
do you know the tom clancy games like wildlands and ghost recon they both are loud but still real life no one can hear them and he knows from exerience since he was a marine so he had to do half of it.
The sound of guns can differentiate depending on its caliber and barrel, suppressors are also affected by design but mostly by caliber.

fan9775 They work fine if your outdoors, if your in an indoor shooting range firing a rifle then you'll probably want something more than the little foam ear plugs. For hunting and outdoor target practice tho they're fine.
