Hey! Venezuelan here. This made me cry for multiple reasons: 1.- The fact that someone is actually factually reporting on what happens to us and in some ways, this has been more through-rough than a lot of journalist.
2.- Because it reminded me of exactly how bad this is, with no end on sight. :(
Just to fact-check/expand on context: Venezuela did have a real, albeit imperfect democratic system from 58-98... The year we elected that asshole Hugo Chávez. And to be fair, plenty of people-both local and immigrants- profited: there was more social mobility and the opportunity to study, get good jobs, make a living, take care of your family, etc. Venezuela was much like the US, a migration magnet.
And food scarcity started in 2007: milk was one of the first things to go. The thing is that because of the high oil prices is like they could keep cooking in spite of a gas leak, but eventually you rub out of gas.
The thing about controlling of the 1 resource=control of the population is true. Is like how abusive partners will try to prevent their victims from having their own money or take away any income they generate so as to keep them subdued.
The Venezuelan government is responsible for people not finding food, but they will SELL you boxes of government selected food for you. So, also Maslow’s pyramid: you keep people from being able to protest because they’re relying on that food box you sell them. And government officials are the ones who import that food and make money off of it.

I was searching for this comment. Actually sand shortage is a huge problem and there are many places in the world we people suffer from criminals illegally harvesting sand and destroying whole costs and ecosystems. Sand is actually the second most used material in the world. Right behind water. This is because it is used in the worlds most human build thing: concrete.

@@GuerkHD this is only half correct, the sand shortage is beach sand, not desert sand for example. sand for concrete can only be used if its from a beach whereas for fiber optic cables it can come from the desert. this is due to the fact that sand eroded by water (beach) is more angled and thus sticks together better making better concrete. the sand used for fiber optic cables can be from deserts as it's melted and it's form is changed.

Energy: breaking just a few bonds to extract a lump of material costs less then effectively disassembling the entire lump.
Cost(money): the higher amount of energy required to melt is still more costly than the expenditure for replacement tools.
The latter might change in the future depending where technology develops.
Although I omitted a little caveat: In the real world we mine ore not the refined metal, so we melt it anyway in the process. However melting it once(refinement) is still cheaper than doing it twice(mining+refinement). If we developed a technique that combined both steps in one that could change aswell (although again that's unlikely to happen due to the additional problem of heat conduction through the ore vein(melting a part would needlessly warm the rest of it, which is energy wasted))

Hello everyone, a Venezuelan here, one that can not say anything also than thank you for Matt Patt for creating awareness about the current situation of my country and telling everyone how is that we actually live here (with the exception of the government and what we call “enchufados” that are corrupt citizens that gain money and power by supporting the government)
I’m 17 years old high school student about to get graduated, and I can tell you that I’m going through one of the toughest moments of my life. I’m actually lucky to be part of the 10% that is able to eat properly and have a good education, but those little things have costed me a lot. A lot my family moved to other countries to try in finding new opportunities and a better life, and I’m not going to be the exception of that case.
My mother actually moved to Panama to get a better job and a better life being broken hearted by the fact of living her son behind so I could finish my high school years here with some of the friends that have stayed. It has been really difficult for her, but because of all the effort she is putting to her job she is able to send us money every now and then so grandparents and me can eat properly every day. Not having my mom around have changed my life a lot, but that’s not the only thing...
All public services in this country are absolute garbage. I can barely have WIFI and even getting water in your house is difficult now a day, to the point where there are some days where I can’t even take a shower or wash my hands.
All this has also affected education in general. Both schools and universities have a shortage of teachers. There are no teachers now a days, I’m in my school currently missing two teachers in two different subjects, let it be because the salary was not enough or because they simply moved to another country. And you can seriously noticed the downgrade on the educational system all around the country.
There is also the insecurity. Venezuela currently have some of the most dangerous cities on the entire world. You can even see that most of the cities of the top ten are form Venezuela, being Caracas (the capital and the city where I live) the most dangerous city in the world. Getting killed, or rob or kidnaped is the most common thing in this city, it’s something that simply japonés all the time.
You have now idea how strange it feels to go to another country and being able to actually take out my phone without being worried about someone coming to me with a pistol and saying “give me your phone”
You may be asking yourself “if you have family outside the country, why you don’t go live with them”. Well, it’s actually not that simple, but getting out of this country is definitely my plan. As soon as I finish high school I will try to get an scholarship and leave this country as I can. And you can see that this is what most professionals are doing, because....
There is no future here, there is no improving , there is no normality, there is no opportunities.....
We Venezuelans don’t live, we survive.

The owners of the stores don’t hide the goods because, first of all, the are not any goods to hide, how do you hope to even put something on the shelves if all the fabrics are abandon and al that we get is imported in dollars, dollars that of course not everyone has.
Also the government put regulations on the products that are of necessary need, take harina pan for example, the government says that every store should sale it at 70 thousand Bs. but the real price is 250 thousand bolívares Bs., so how the heck is the store and the owner and the fabrics supposed to produce and gain anything if they are literally losing money on every sell. So that lowers the production, makes the companies that offers good and services go to bankrupt and so as a result you have a shortage of everything and one of the biggest inflation of the entire world. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg
And also, I will like you to at least inform yourself about how is that thing actually work and what is really happening in the country before you do some comment like that. Because it really pissed me off reading such a none sense

But just talking MCU, there are some other big problems. Wukanda isnt presented as a rich country, a majority of the people are basic workers and farmers, the country doesnt lean on wealth as an important factor of life, and they are protected by their tech from the things that other African locations deal with, namely, conflict.
That said, as climate change happens, their way of life is impacted heavily, and a country that lives primarily through agriculture is severaly at risk. Further more, the rest of the worlds is actually fairly close, i not already able to, with the help of allies made with space travling races and...norse gods, obtain either vibrainum from off earth locations, or infact, stronger materials we have seen in the other movies, and more advanced tech seen in other movies. Their military might is mostly stagnet, and frankly pretty lacking stratigically behind even modern weapons, let alone the power of what off world tech is bringing to earth. In ten years time, its entirely possible Wukanda wont be able to fight this agressive rise in tech other locations can bear on them.

In fact, excluding their artfacts, (which btw were commisionend from a race of dwarves who are now almost all dead) They seem to be middle age tech at most. As far as all the examples go, wakanda is still the most advanced, (technology wise) in the series, with potential growth being made apparent by the "what if t'challa was star lord' episode of What if
It's true that as technology advances, the old wakanda may be eclipsed, but Wakanda is no stranger to technological advancements themselves. Not to mention, with the plot device that is vibranium, it wouldn't be so far fecthed to assume that wakanda could solve global warming on a small scale like their country.

Ummmm.... MatPat? I’m a huuuge fan, but I need to point out something here. Vibranium is NOT the reason why Wakanda is wealthy. While the characters may claim it is, it can’t be true. It was mentioned multiple times that Wakanda never exported Vibranium outside of the country (except possibly the material for Cap’s shield), which means that all of the Wakanda’s wealth must have been gained from separate exports. While the sudden exports of Vibranium caused by T’Challa opening up trade at the movie will probably ruin the economy, I’m not sure that it will happen exactly as you predicted. Again, I’m an absolute fan of Game/Film Theory, but I felt this had to be mentioned. In the meantime, remember that’s just a theory, A FILM THEORY(critique)!!!!!!!!

      @matthewpattonv5326 Před 6 lety +21

      (Spoiler Warning!!!)
That’s a very good point, however, we know from the movie that T’Challa has no intentions of keeping Wakanda’s Vibranium reserve secret and making small trades. He says at the very end that Wakanda is prepared to share it’s knowledge and resources to the world, which includes the sharing of Vibranium economically in international trade.

This is a great video, but it has a huge foundational flaw. Wakanda doesn't actually export vibranium lol. Also because of Wakanda's historical extreme isolationism their economy also isn't really based on trade at all. Remember they were considered an impoverished "third world" country by the rest of the world. Very few people even know that Wakanda is the source of vibranium. The black market on the stuff is certainly booming, but besides simply wanting to recover it just to keep it out of other's hands that isn't really a problem for Wakanda or the Black Panther.

Great film theory but after seeing the movie I saw a couple things that make me feel like playing devils advocate.
    1. Vibranium is their key resource but I dont think its the only thing they can bring to the market. Their technology is so advanced that their soldiers have access to Stark level weapons so they have plenty to sell without vibranium.
    2. I dont know if the comic clarifies but from the movie it seems that Wakanda is less of a country and more like a city-state so they probably dont have the same issues that a bigger country would have.

To be fair, a lot of the problems with a single-resource economy comes from selling that resource abroad, so if you pull a Wakanda and just keep all the vibranium to yourself, its price becomes low enough to not cause problems, rather than being kept high by all the demand outside the country.

It actually works either way. They appear rich because of their advanced technology -- but they're not that advanced anymore and will soon be outpaced by everyone else, while simultaneously have tons of an ore no one cares about any more. So they couldn't trade in vibranium and they couldn't trade in technology. Which, again, they may decide to continue to be 100% isolated, but they wouldn't be a relatively advanced or wealthy country anymore.

Though this is a great video, I just have to bring up the fact that Wakanda never exported Vibranium. Their trades was not solely based on Vibranium because they never traded it. Also another thing I noticed is that although T'Challa is the sole leader he has a council that helps him run the nation, insight on what his people need and what else he "should" do to better Wakanda. Third, when the one member of the council mentions the world is catching up, he doesn't mean the world is close to an alternative to Vibranium, since it is not a metal that is in high demand in the Marvel Universe, meaning that there would be no need for an alternative. Vibranium also seems like the element that everyone cares the least about otherwise Tony Stark probably would have a suit made up of it. Great video though!

As I said in another comment... it doesnt make any sense that Wakanda 'never' traded or exported their resource... Sure there's a lockdown on it in the modern age but here's a rundown on what probably happened.
"The only way a fictional 'self-sufficient utopia' like Wakanda, which currently in the Modern age has a lock-down on Vibranium, could work, would be if in the ancient past it traded away or leveraged some of its vital resource (Vibranium) to then gain funds which would allow it to develop and harness the resources as a military resource. They would then use this superior military tech to subjugate and raid the other peoples and in return gain an abundance of other resources. That would explain why the axe from the start of the movie got out, why Stark and the Americans had some Vibranium and would explain why their monarch is an armoured, militaristic, war-god. It is also explained in their history where the T'challa clan (don't know their family title) subjugated and unified the remaining tribes. They've probably built their entire monarchy and dynasty on the exploitation of Vibranium as a military resource to just pillage and levy all the remaining tribes. Once they had enough resources (gold, precious metals, livestock, land) they can then cultivate and harness these resources to cycle up their society, funneling whatever profits into vibranium development so it no longer is a complete military resource... They now use vibranium for tech and infrastructure and can lock away the rest of this resource from the outside world... Their dev of vibranium now allows them to make a constant cycling of profits to benefit every industry and the profits go back into the society. All built on centuries of pillaging and war... Pretty awful self-sufficient utopia right there."

Yes, but Mattpat used his hypothesis as if Wakanda traded vibranium to gain other resources in modern times when they kept it in their own society. What you said actually makes the whole economy of Wakanda make a bit more sense so thanks for that but that would have happened in the past. Thinking that vibranium was traded to other countries to fuel Wakanda's economy was just a small mistake Mattpat made.

    • @kazukimuto4285
      @kazukimuto4285 Před 6 lety

It's isn't really accurate to say they _never_ traded Vibranium. Cuz let's be honest, Vibranium is their *_only_* valuable resource. And we never really see how they provide basic needs for their citizens. To make things simple, let me ask you a question. How do they get food? We never see any huge factories, plantations, or farms that would help them in being a self-sustaining nation. So the only possible way is to buy imports. But how would they do that if there was no inflow of money? They can't.
So now let's say that they do have money. Where does it come from? Their government provides everything from education to jobs. And someone else in the comments said that Wakanda doesn't need money because they made everything all for the sake of Wakanda's betterment and laborers never needed a salary. And that's where I call Cowdung. Their citizens don't need money and they refuse to trade their only resource that's of value yet they're so economically stable? That's like saying I passed all my college classes even though I was absent for an entire semester. It's impossible and absurd.
So now, how do they do it? Through trade. Trading what? Their precious Vibranium. With whom? You may ask. We never see other cities in the Marvel Universe that uses Vibranium, right? Wrong. We know Cap's shield is made out of the stuff so it can only mean other types of defensive machines and weaponry have been made with this. We know that it's the strongest metal in the Marvelverse so it would only make sense that people will want it. But by who, you might ask again. Simple. The higher-ups. The people who control the productions of weaponry. The Government. We know that Vibranium has different variations and that these variations are found in isolated regions across the world. One variation that was even called "Anti-Metal" could cut through any known metal. So power hungry politicians are going to want to get their hands on this stuff because it would give them an amazing advantage should war ensue.
And the same goes for the villains. This mineral would be able to give them the upper hand and finally the chance to succeed in their plans. Which in turn will make the Heroes also want it. Because they would need to study and reverse engineer it if they want to develop a metal stronger than it to defend themselves should any villain ever obtain it. And how would they do that without causing war? By buying it. And who can sell it? Wakanda. So, they sell small amounts of Vibranium at a high price and that's where there money comes from.

    • @joemama114
      @joemama114 Před 6 lety +1

Maybe they sold it to Howard Stark? He got a small amount of vibranium trade goods. Also the random "relic" that was found in Black Panther movie.
The one Klaw wanted to steal and sell. Clearly vibranium makes it way outside Wakanda either by purpose or by accident.

    • @tokalerutla886

Wait a minute the is still the possibility that the nation has its own factories supplying the nation, considering that everything has a cloaking field and its not as if wakanda is the wealthiest in currency when the movie starts they say they say they have the lowest currency. Remember the end of the movie when the politician said "what can a nation of farmers do" this in itself tells us they dont keep the primary resources secret ie food resources. who is to say they cant farm their own shrimp in a shrimp farm if they want delicacies.
Secondly who said meteors can only land on one country yes black markets would play a part in some exports but the more likely occurrence is that other smaller meteors could have landed else where in the world creating very small pockets of vibranium.
What i don't understand is how can a nation be watching youtube videos( i say this because "what are those!!!") yet the isnt a country or youtube picking up the network feeds.

The thing is, Wakanda doesn’t just rely on its vibranium. It was self-sufficient for centuries without the help of other countries, so it isn’t necessary to sell vibranium. The country is completely fine, T’Challa made the choice to open the borders so they could share their wealth, so I doubt they have many financial issues

I'm gonna assume they aren't giving away the Vibranium by itself, but maybe instead using it to help the disenfranchised around the world.

Someone hasn't been paying attention AND hasn't tried to think outside the box on this one. It's been established that Wakanda doesn't sell any vibranium, and can create technology that is literally centuries ahead of the rest of the world. Using this technology, it is easy to assume that they have such efficient monitoring that virtually no vibranium escapes to the black market, which is why Klaue was so proud of being the only person to have seen Wakanda and stolen a tiny bit of its treasure. And it has been established that the capabilities of vibranium are far beyond that of any other material; it has no substitute. Wakanda has prospered and its people are very well-educated and modern, and Shuri is considered the most intelligent person in the world, so it is also not crazy to assume that the head-start provided by such technological advancement would result in her creating a substitute for vibranium first, if its even possible. Adamantium is probably on the way, so it's likely to be the closest substitute for vibranium used in the same manner as Captain America's shield, but vibranium has been repeatedly shown to be far more versatile in application than just as a strong metal. Adamantium has not.
As for how the country prospers...there are countless ways. Wakanda has futuristic, magnet bullet trains with sonic dampers that can actually cancel out the properties of a metal somehow. They have technology that can heal almost any wound. They can fly jets remotely using VR, and even communicate with and control wildlife. They can even harness and manipulate kinetic energy into pretty much anything they like. Perhaps they have unlimited sources of renewable energy because of this. Perhaps vibranium-based machines can process metals and other materials to sell to other countries. Perhaps they make and sell oil or gold using middle men. Perhaps Wakandans can literally create food, and pretend they are just conventionally farming or producing. And while their technology does all the heavy lifting that other countries must deal with, Wakandans can study, train, and travel. Given that they have several undercover expats, perhaps they are profiting this way. The best surgeons, lecturers, soldiers, political advisers, and industrialists of the world could easily be Wakandan, and accumulating wealth that eventually returns to their homeland. After all, Killmonger was easily able to hide his heritage and be accepted as an American, and he made a name for himself at MIT and with American special forces. Long story short, there are a million ways that Wakandans could theoretically use their magical metal and profit from it without selling it to anyone, or compromising their generally isolationist stance. Unlike other countries, a monopoly on vibranium could lead to vast amounts of virtually any other resource, which means that Wakandan rulers have had it pretty easy when it comes to dealing with the needs of their people. All they have really had to do is maintain secrecy over their methods well.
I like your theories Matpat but this one was poorly thought-out.
