The thing with the death note is that Light would never be able to catch you if your name doesn't appear on a criminal record, so some elusive killer like say Jack the Ripper and any of the most brutal ones who also happen to be quite elusive would never be caught by Light.

2:25 No, Kira is meant to sound like “killer” using Japanese pronounced English. It doesn’t make it racist in the slightest. English has 44 phonemes in the language while Japanese has 15; English has nearly triple the amount of basic sounds that Japanese does. When native Japanese speakers learn English, they use the sounds they know to get as close to the English pronunciation. In fact, I think it’s good for English speakers who want to learn Japanese to respectfully practice “Engrish”, so when speaking to native Japanese speakers who are learning English, it’s easier for you to understand.
The author of Death Note chose Kira purposefully to connect with another language and honoring that connection is in no way racist.

I’m pretty sure Light did consider false convictions because I remember in one of the earlier episodes he said that he makes sure if people are genuinely sorry or not for their crimes.
Light probably investigates all his cases.
My theory is that even just a coffee shopkeeper, he kills after knowing everything about him.

I feel the need to remind people that Light did research on his victims, he criticized Higutchi for not doing so sparking the thought that Kira 1 operated how he would have done it. The innocent people number has got to be at least a bit lower.
Also because of that research people whose cases were decided by plea bargain would have been taken into account. And Light kills people who are just suspects because the flaws in the criminal justice system let some people off really easy and punishes others far to harshly. I think Light was aware of these flaws and that’s *why* he became Kira. We can’t forget that Light is a genius and a perfectionist. He wouldn’t take short cuts when he could avoid it.

You're forgetting the fact that crime rate dropped due to fear of being killed by Kira, so it's not that crime rates dropped due to Light killing criminals but instead the fear of death stopping criminals from committing crimes. Light still killed a lot of innocents.

I think the number of names Light writes when L is defeated more than doubles probably. He's passionate and has absolutely nothing in his way, if not more allies helping him. One of the best animes ever
I think it's an interesting debate as to whose fault it is for the deaths caused by the kiras mainly Light Yagami. Many people blame Ryuk and his boredom being the cause but there is no question that Light is directly responsible. While some blame can be put on Ryuk it's like he says the person who finds the death note is not selected so how could he have known what Light was capable of? Ryuk even seems a bit put off sometimes by the way Light behaves which says alot. All I'm saying is that while Ryuk may be indirectly responsible for the deaths, the true monster of death note was indeed a human, Light Yagami

The manga does offers a bit of an epilogue after Light’s defeat, which lets us know the state of the world after Kira. There are also extra chapters and mini stories here and there with other characters (read the BB case if you haven’t, takes place before Kira and it’s pretty entertaining)

So if he had to do about 6 letters for each person he would do 1,452,000 letters
If it takes half a second for each letter you would have 726,000 seconds
If we divide this number by 60 to make a minute we get 12,100
If we want to make it into hours and divide it by 60 again we would get 201 hours
he'd have to write around 133 per day to reach that if he were doing that for 5 years.

My favorite part of death note was the part of DELETES
I have a new question about the death note based off what you said at the beginning of the episode about signing peoples death notes, in the show there is a rule that states if the owner of the death note accidentally misspells a persons name 4 times the death note will have no effect on them, however if they misspell it willingly 4 times the owner of the death note will die, so if you misspelled your own name on someone else's death note would the death note have no effect on you (because your not the owner your simply being lent the notebook) or will the owner of the death note die? it specifies if the name is misspelled 4 times on purpose the owner of the notebook will die (you can also lend the power of the notebook to someone else without giving up ownership of the book), just finished the show after only half finishing it for years now, just wanted to share my thoughts

I don't think that the number of innocents killed is that much. We hear that light looks into the cases for his victims to see if they are guilty or not. He could have still killed innocents but i think it would be a much lower number of them.

The theory that Light is just killing people in a list of criminals just sounds not like Kira. Remember, he placed countermeasures to prevent the tampering of his Death Note, orchestrated the forgetting of people's memories, etc. Point is, he's CAREFUL. The only time he acts carelessly are the first 2 kills.
If he was just going by a simple list, it wouldn't require Misa being on a computer too; it would just be a simple list and copying and pasting those names on the Death Note. Instead, they are RESEARCHING these criminals based on the data collected by the police (via his dad's access), and passing judgment that way.
To say Light is just killing criminals on a whim without much thought doesn't sound like Light.

In the clip where it shows how many names were written in the first five days, you can see that multiple pages have been filled out (porbably about 8 on the right and written on both sides of the page so about 17 considering that there was a new page started on the left) which means about 2156606.4 kills
Light's ego gets too big for him which leads to his downfall.
Meanwhile in code Geass lelouch's ego leads to his victory and eventual planned death.
It's a very interesting dichotomy that shows the difference in environments of both shows.

Just started watching this channel and I am fully binging at this point.
If he took his time and got access to thing like medical records for his victims, he could've made their death more natural. He could've even planned it so that they deteriorated over time, dying after a week or two of an infection. He had the time to write it, so if he just wrote something along the lines of 'xyz will die after contracting a chest infection over a period of two weeks' then he most likely would have gotten away with it. If he figured out the instructions before rushing into it he could've been so much smarter about it. Idk, I kinda feel like a crazy person for thinking about it so much.

I'm here today, after finally watching Death Note myself, missing you MatPat. You were my favorite CZcamsr for a decade.
He was never justice, he was bored. It was explained with his first interaction with Ryuk. When L appeared that was his endgame. Beating L. He played a great game.

In the very begining it is established that every single day he needs to listen to criminal reports in the Media over and over and over again, even while he just casualy walks the streets due to there beeing tv-monitors all around. And he was so fed up with these news reports what it became "boring" to hear the same things over again with the simultanious knowledge that he himself can't do anything about that. so hearing that broadcast or not doesn't even matter in the end. Therefore it wasn't boredom, he was just tired of hearing these things over and over without having an actual positve impact to him knowing that at all.
But as he finds the DeathNote, this thing changes it's direction entirely, all these news he was so fed up with were suddenly, insead of negative noise, his ground floor of life. The ONE thing he was so tired of, because he couldn't do anything with it until the point of absolute meaninglessness, became meaning itself.
In the death note community, we have only one unspoken rule- never speak of the live action movie

13:40, I know this theory is almost 5 years old at this point, but i've been rewatching death note, If i remember correctly Rem comments that higuchi kills people that were falsely convicted, as well as accidental murders. That means there's an implication that Light can discern the difference between someones intention, which means this entire next however long segment isn't necessary.
How I really find unbelievable is how Near's guy Stephen Gevanni was able to hand copy all 27816 names of Mikami's notebook in his exact handwriting in one night
I think it's because light removed all the pages of the death note that Miss had written in over the past 5 years when he handed it over to Mikami, and then Mikami only wrote names in the r-real notebook from Nov 27th to Dec 12th. From Dec 12th to Jan 25th, takuda was writing names
