Ik this is late but nobody mentioned that each homunculus got a different amount of souls so his calculation of Lust's amount of soul is wrong Lmao

His assumption was that it was divided by 14 for the 7 sins and 7 virtues. He made no assumptions that each 7 sin got the same amount and there is a confirmation with King Bradly, didn't he mention how many souls he had to fight to keep ownership of the body?
Also he doesn't count the fact how many times Lust has died beforehand.

Bradley didn't give a specific number. In Episode 26, Bradley calls them "countless" in the dub and "many" in the sub translations. Quite frankly, there's nothing to go off of one way or another to contradict or support his assumption. We know Father is stronger than Hoenheim since Hoenheim allegedly isn't good at fighting and has deposited an unknown number of philosopher stone souls to make his own circle, we know he had humans sacrificed for other experiments and could have added to his own stone over the years. We know he's been powering alchemy for all of Amestris. We know he created his own body the first time and like Hoenheim, his body hadn't aged before creating the Homunculi. We also don't see him suddenly become greedy when re-absorbing the first Greed. We don't know how many times he or Lust died prior to the series or what the running cost is. There are simply too many unknowns. But the assumptions Matpat made are plainly stated. We know it can't be accurate because of the unknowns, but he worked with what he had to make something he thought would be entertaining.
We. All. Know. This. That's the baseline assumption for this, or any other analysis of fiction, that the one speaking can only be as accurate as his assumptions and what the series gives us. And like most fiction, FMA plays fast and loose with the numbers. While it gives an exact number of souls in Hoenheim, every division is an unknown number, every power use is different enough not to give a baseline, and we have no idea how many other incidents they have been through or what their work costs them. A few examples: Sloth dies far more easily but has far more mass and has just spent a long time manually digging a tunnel. Pride is the "most powerful". Pride and Gluttony consume people, potentially adding to their power source. Gluttony was a failed experiment to create an eye of truth that has opened on a few occasions and connects to a void world of blood and ruins. Envy gets his powers back after being defeated through what should be far smaller stones, and survives without a stone because he's different in a vague way. There's no comparing energy use in-universe, so all he can work with is his assumption.

@@chrisdenke2914 so I looked it up, the average 13 episode anime costs 2 million dollars to produce. soul eater was a 50 episode series meaning it likely costed 10 million to make. now if they choose to remake it like they did with fullmetal alchemist brotherhood they'd likely have to double it's runtime to fit all the content that is missing from the manga, therefore it would likely cost 20 million dollars to produce a 100 episode remake of soul eater. if you happen to know any millionair weebs maybe try asking them to remake it, unfortunately I only know poor people.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but Lust's fight with Mustang wasn't the only time she took damage. If we're assuming souls are used up when they're used to heal, she would have less than the 38,000 at the beginning of the fight. Technically, depending on if she took damage off screen, she could have a LOT less. So, There is still hope for you, Immortal Theorist.
And as well the homunculi have been around for centuries, so surely a lot of souls were used up in that time too
Perhaps it's not that the souls themselves are used up, but that their energy is consumed. He might better have said some odd number "souls' worth of energy". I make this distinction because there is the possibility that she's restoring her energy (but not the souls. Or maybe the souls?) through some unknown means. It's been a long time since I've watched the show, but this is my explanation as to why Matpat can make his calculation from one scene. Just one more thing to consider.
@@Yashael341 But You should take into account that a philosopher stone stores the souls as energy, thus, the amount souls and energy are equivalent (because they are the same thing). So, the more energy Lust consumes the more souls she’s using up. We also know that she has to consume those souls to stay alive for that long and to transmute, so the amount of souls Roy would have consumed would’ve been far less than what Mat had calculated, regardless.

We can argue equivalency of souls and energy (actually this argument convinced me to rewatch the series, I'm just not to that point yet), but the point still stands that in the intervening years, the homunculi may have "replenished" their energy somehow. I don't think it was ever stated that they only had what was contained in their stones at conception. If so, I'm sure they would've used that all up just living as long as they did.
MatPat had to make at least some assumptions here in order to have anything to calculate at all.
Just wanted to add that while Father (aka Homunculus) TRIED to purge himself of the Seven Deadly Sins (heavy emphasis on TRIED), he still retained a trace amount of them: He desires for becoming a perfect being (Lust); devours souls with no self-control (Gluttony); seeks power at all costs (Greed); prefers to let others do his bidding for him while being incredibly incompetent and doing little to nothing to further his own goals over hundreds of years (Sloth); feels anger towards any opposition, principally Hohenheim (Wrath); has a desire for a family like humans (Envy); views humans as "ants" (Pride). However, given the general vagueness of these behaviors, as well as his dispassionate demeanor compared to both prior to the creation of and after the death of the homunculi, seems to imply that he did get himself purged of his sins.

This is a really good theory, don't get me wrong, and I will insta-click on anything FMA from this channel, but I'm pretty sure Lust uses up her souls way more often then just her fight with Mustang. Hughes stabs her in the head with a throwing knife, Hawkeye shoots her 24 ish times, not to mention that she is 250 years old. That still doesn't account for anytime she used her stone in the past. To be fair though, it would be basically impossible to factor all that in, and just to reiterate, I really liked this theory a LOT. Keep up the good work!

You are assuming Lust's first death was Mustang's first explosion. Since she's lived for hundreds of years, it's possible she's died before. You are also forgetting that Father has created more than 7 homunculi, as he re-creates them every time one of them dies.

Tomas Roque also the fact that we actually witnessed Hughes get a headshot on Lust with a knife. Though it wasn't a confirmed "kill", she looked pretty dead to me before she revived.
A headshot with a knife is, at least with MatPats calculations, way easier to repair than half a body. Not saying anything against that she probably has died more than seven times, just that the amount of damage done to the body is important for the calculation based on mass, not the death itself. Even damage done by aging could be more expensive to repair over the span of multiple years than a simple knife to the head.
I'm not sure that the stone's have a fixed amount of energy either. I always assumed that they got overloaded by having to repeatedly regenerate in a short time, because there is a scene where gluttony uses up all his regeneration but survives, and later in the show has regeneration again. You could say father just gave him more souls, but that would also be assuming.
I feel like the 'insurmountable cost of a human soul' is the philosophical point of the show- and also that humanity is strong because of their ability to connect with others and grow as people.

ok but like this is incredibly inaccurate, the hummonculi constantly feed off of the stone to stay alive and every time lust has used her powers, every second she's existed and every time she's died has slowly been draining her stone, so we can't know for sure how much a soul is really worth
plus, roy burned her before she fully regenerated every single blast
One problem with your calculation is it assumes that Lust's "battery" was at 100% when she encountered Mustang even though we already know she has been using it, obviously to live, and also to use her powers as a homunculus. You also neglect the obvious signs of losses when regenerating, like all the light and arcing we see as homunculus regenerate, and assume that the stone is completely efficient when being used.

That and all the time she was alive.
So, since cells in our body replace themselves entirely every 4 days to 1 year ( 8 year for fat, which she didnt obviously have that much ;) ), we can assume that she replaced herself every 6 months. That makes up about 500 COMPLETE regenerations throughout her lifespan. So it didnt took 9 bodies for the souls to be burnt, but 509!
And that asssumes that untill she met Mustang noone has ever injured her before, or each of these regenerations would have to be accounted for too.
But one can assume that they didn't use souls to stay alive by "regenerating" dead cells spending soul energy but just by physiological processes like eating, breathing, etc. So they would only need to spend one soul per average lifespan of their respective available ones. That would account for 3 to 5 souls throughout her 250 years lifetime

One piece is not that long: three episodes a week (which is coincidentally the amount you need to watch to feel the show progress), and you'll be caught up to the current episode in, *does maths,* five years, at which point, the show will be another 300 episodes down, but then its only two and a half more years and you're all caught up. Or, you could binge the whole thing in about a fortnight (I watched 600 episodes in nine days when I started).
An hour a week for seven and a half years hardly requires one commit genocide for the souls' energy.

He's calculated the energy needed to regenerate her whole body, even so, he forgot the time Mustang ripped the stone out of her chest and she regenerated around it, so instead of dividing by 9 it should have been 10
@@andy54668 by taking into account her age (between 200 and 400 years) , the "recycle rate" of our body (how long it takes for your body to fully "shed" (dead cells etc.) which is about 5 years if i remember correctly, meaning that every atom in your body gets replaced within five years except for those in teeth and some neurons etc.) so you can find how many times she had to "regenerate" her body to live past a normal human life expectancy , even if it was atom by atom rather than the full regenerative thing when she gets burned .

Although the calculations seem legit here, there are some reasons that the whole theory could be wrong. for instance, Roy could likely not have been the first person to ever have injured lust enough to make her regenerate which means the estimate energy of a human soul could be wrong.
Another instance, all the homunculus were at least 60+ which meant a certain amount of energy had to be used for their survival.
But otherwise this is a great video!
I imagine that since a person can live ~100 years off of just one soul. The conversion would be the same during periods of time where regeneration / powers aren't being used.

I really like your theory, but there is one problem: the thing with Lust. See, in the Manga the fight between Mustang and Lust is waaaayy longer, Lust gets shot by hawkeye somewhere in the battle etc. Aaand we don't know how often Lust died before the battle, and she did for sure. So the data your using in this case is kinda off. But the rest of the theory is pretty good, have some props and keep doing such awesome stuff

Then again, I somehow doubt she had experienced enough damage to need to replace so much matter. Most injuries (ie, ones that don't incinerate half your body) could hypothetically be fixed by "rearranging" you cells, instead of creating new matter. Up until this point in the story, FMA doesn't give us any reason to believe she's been under this kind of burden regularly, so I think it's reasonable to assume that Lust had the majority of her full capacity by that point.

So not just their name, but who they are, what they do, and how they relate to and interact with everyone else you also maintain a stable relationship with.
He's just learning their names, a single giant shopping list. That has to do entirely with long-term memory and his ability to recall such memories.
Dicerson Almost. The souls are still living inside Von Hoenhime. He has conversations with them. Just before he brags to Father about how he learned the names of each and every one of them, he lists off about 7 names and then details what they did in life. A flourish, a son wanting to take over the family business, etc...
However, the you are right in saying he isn't maintaining a "relationship" with them. It would be more like a king who knows the name of all of his subjects. He would know who they are and what they do, but could move on to learn about someone else. He isn't inviting them to dinner or anything, its just intell gathering from disembodied conciousnesses.

I think there's a better point of reference. Lust has been alive for several hundred years and has had to regenerate many times. She wouldn't be close a full 1/14th of the souls, and we have no way of knowing how used up her stone is. I think a better reference would be when Ed gets impaled and uses his own soul to heal himself. He states that it'll take a few years off his life, so maybe 1/20th of a soul, and from the area of the would you could estimate he probably has to regenerate around 250 grams of flesh to stop himself from bleeding out. Using your calculation as a base, 250 grams = 2 786 141 tera joules/280 = 9 950 tera joules = 1/20th of a soul. 1 soul = 199 010 tera joules of energy. This is about 300 times more than your estimate, which given the fact that those last few minutes likely made up a fraction of her souls makes some sense. It's a much more self-contained example; maybe very wrong, but another interpretation. Still, loved the episode, as always.

Once you have calculated these numbers, are they consistent with the damage the other homonculi took? It seems like Sloth and Gluttony were killed far easier.
I am also not convinced that Father was generous enough to give each of his children 1/14th of his souls. Despite having purged himself, he still has many of these sinful traits inside him, especially pride. If father had removed all the sinful souls, then he would have been unable to regenerate Gluttony in a way that he was still gluttonus.
A better way to calculate this would have been to have measured the amount of energy it took to kill Hoenheim. We know for certain how many souls he was given and we know that he only used souls when it was absolutely necessary. We even know exactly how many souls he took out to make his giant transmutation circle because he addresses them by name.

As much as I love FMA, that's the one point that annoyed me. He should have gone insane from the sheer amount of voices speaking to him. Same with Father (Father was one of the shadows from beyond the gate, given form by H's blood)...so Father's definition of sanity is a bit off. (His ending - "I just wanted to have all the world's knowledge! What did I do wrong?" made me think of a mad scientist trying something ethical and then justifying it.)

Hmm well can't envy absorb the souls and mass of different living beings? His true form is that of a slug, but if he kept absorbing other bodies, he should have more mass and energy than the other homunculus. He did that during the end of the series, where he went around and absorbed the white homunculus to recharge his stone. I believe he also tried to do this to Ed and Ling, when they were eaten by gluttony.
My major issue with this theory is that it assumes that lust had a fully charged philosopher's stone. That would imply that lust had never been injured or killed before. She was dealt a mortal blow at least once prior by Lt. Colonel Maes Hughes. That's not taking into account that it would mean the battery that keeps her alive does not deplete thorough continued use as well.
So MatPat would need to account for how much life she had at the time before getting burned? You got a point there, although I'm not to sure compare the mortal blow to being burned (only one burn though). Does she need as much energy to regenerate when going against Hughes?

It's difficult to determine if it takes an entire soul or a portion of a soul to bring a homunculus back to life despite the way they died.
Sloth died fewer times with more fatal wounds, aka concrete spike tru his skull, twice I think, and a few punches yet it was enough to destroy his stone.
Impalements, bullet channels, and related stabbings don't do much to a form. For US they are lethal, but they really don't do much in the way of actual mass displacement. Minimal use of energy for those. *QUITE* different from the simply MASSIVE damage Mustang was doing. He was shearing off 10s of kilograms of mass from her form (completely removing it that one time, when she had to totally regenerate from the stone in his hand) with every attack.

Well don't be annoyed, nobody knows what a soul truly looks like. There have been several depictions of what a soul is like throughout several religions throughout history. There is even an ancient word for "blood" that means "life force" or "soul". So for all we know our very soul is our blood. But we do know this: The soul is actually your own mind, your soul is your personality, emotions, memories, everything that makes you and individual.
Noah Wilson i'm an atheist, so i don't believe a soul of any type exists. i'm annoyed at the inconsistency, because there's a moment in FMA that shows souls as A: red, B: cloudy, floating masses of some fluid. then refined souls are shown as a sticky, viscous fluid that sloshes like wine and crystallizes in open air.
meanwhile, soul eater souls are orbs of glowing power, and their size is metaphorical rather than literal. there are characters who's souls are larger than their bodies, such as blackstar, stein and kid, with the most extreme examples being the great ones, such as lord death who's soul is larger than the city they live in and asura, who's soul can reach the earth from the moon. granted, the moon in soul eater is much closer than in reality, but still.
souls in FMA are all uniform as well. they all look the same, and if forced into physical form (such as on envy's true form), they always take androgenous, identical human forms with no special defining features. souls in soul eater are unique, usually displaying something about the character, such as asura's taking the form of inky black fluid, lord death's being sunshine yellow and having the points of his mask on it or maka's having wings, granting her special abilities. heck, kid's soul even changes form as he does, connecting his lines of sanzu draws completed lines on his soul as well.
so it's less a matter of "nobody knows what a soul looks like" and more a matter of "this has depicted souls a certain way, and you chose to ignore that for some reason".
'course, the reason is that soul eater's souls are easier to edit into the video than FMA's are.

Your conclusion is based on the assumption that Lust has used no soul energy from the time she was created to the time she was burned by Mustang.
there isnt a solid way to calculate that other than simply living, which i did the math only accounts for 3.5 souls.(she is 250 years old, and the average human life is 71 years) and i doubt lust was completely annihilated at any point in the series before mustang entered the picture. any minor injures are more or less negligible compared to reconstructing half her body. If i were to be generous it would probably be a lot less than the reconstructions equivalent to mustang burning her to a crisp.
plus she only has to reconstruct her body due to it being burned away, less serious injuries could use the matter already there and just reshape it.
I feel like the combustion of lusts body is too general because u see homunculi getting killed in other ways or damaged. The easiest example is when greed gets his head knocked off and it costs 1 life and he states so. That's just the top of his head and kinda muddied up how much it costs to regenerate and even mat pat stated their powers use energy so that's not taken into account either

ik its just a theory.. but there's a serious flaw in it matpat. The scene we use of lust's death is kind of not all the energy of the philosophers stones.. All the homunculi use their regeneration carelessly and have been injured that way many times before.. so mustang wouldn't be the first one to injure her .. ik that makes them incalculable but this fact increases the value of the soul drastically.. and thats justtt a theory.. a fillm theory
Well, on the other hand I would say that the number of souls the humonculi obtained at first should be greater than 1/14 of Father's soul, because I refuse to believe that the murdered souls that had been kept locked in a stone and used as energy would all still be as virtuous as they are sin-filled. Meaning that the sin-filled amount of souls would be considerable larger than the virtous ones, so the humonculus together probably had more souls than Father himself. So maybe those two points balance each other out?
I was going to point this out, list is hardly a new humonculi, she would have been 'alive' for quite awhile before Mustang came along and tried to kill her meaning she could have been hurt or just used the energy quite a few times, kinda throws the numbers out abit
Also the point mat is making with all the sins and virtues thing evening out, with that large a population each person has their own amounts of each however with such a large pool to grasp from the numbers almost perfectly even out just through sheer human differences
I know, but the magnitude of each of those trait's wouldn't be as balanced as Matt believed them to be. I'm convinced that all of those vengeful souls have far more pride, envy, lust, greed, gluttony, wrath (especially wrath), and sloth than they have any of their contrasts. Which means that it's not plausible for Father, who keeps the virtuous parts to have as much soul energy as the humunculos combined do.
And on top of that, every body change they undergo, like Lust's piercing fingers or "Ultimate Spear", also expends some amount of that energy.

It's psychological. The ability to reason is linked not only to mental capacity, but also mental state. If that position makes him feel calmer, that would increase his capacity for reasoning.
Let me explain...
Putting his legs up, he is making the blood run easier-ly (I don't really know the word for that), which means he gets more blood into his brain faster. It makes total sense, except that I have read some studies that show that the absolutely perfect position to make the frontal lope (part of the brain that thinks) work better your legs would have to make a 136º angle with your spine. That position increases you attention, memory and thinking.
Also, since I have noticed that L often sees the darker side of things and makes some choices that are bad to those around him, it might be due to his posture when he stands up. His back is always in an arch, presumably because he has scoliosis, that position just isn't natural. You see, people whose back is in an arch tend to have sadder, darker thoughts than people who sit up straight and have good posture.
That doesn't really conclude anything.
But, if the posture he is using when sitting down does not help his thinking, some people think it might be because L suffers from Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism). One of the many particular traits of people with Asperger is that they create rituals that they think help them do daily things (like thinking). The theory that he may have Asperger comes from the fact that L is usually off in his own world and is unable to connect to other people. Again, I'm not the one who made the theory, I don't even know anyone with Asperger to take those conclusions.

The idea L becomes smarter through anything other than the placebo effect is bunkam. There's no sitting position that'll make you smarter. Sitting upright in your chair will make you more attentive because you have to make a conscious effort to remain seated fully upright (your body naturally tries to slump to save energy).
I know this because I sat like L through my childhood until my uncle, who is a doctor, took me aside and explained how anatomy works. L does all the worst things for increasing brain function; he doesn't sleep well, he doesn't eat right, he drinks way too much caffeine. If anything L was literally dumbing himself down all through Death Note. This "tortured genius with eccentric habits" shit needs to stop in detective serials. The best detectives irl are good leaders who work as part of a team. Not this silly "lone wolf vs the serial killer" thing.

That's impossible to calculate since he never used his full force. and fr that reason his power is infinitely expanding since they dont need to set a limit on it, its the whole point of the character. even if he'd make a "current power of opm" it'd just be boring.

The only possible answer to this is his strongest punch is 10x stronger than the one he used to kill Boros since the creator said Saitama was only using 10% of his power there. But even that is an unknown amount of power since some of that punch's force was used to deflect Boros' "planet busting" attack, which may or may not be planet busting, or could destroy far more than just a single planet. So there there just aren't enough variable to work with.

I think you'd also have to figure out how much of the souls were used over her lifetime before the Mustang incident: Damage she sustained, how long she has lived, and how much energy her abilities use.

ImpureKing His logic on the number of souls Lust had when she was created is good, but by using the number of times she regenerated against Mustang he calculated her stone`s energy at the time of her death instead of when it was first created. So when he divided the energy at the time of her death by the number of souls she started with his answer was off.
Still he's proven the soul has an incredible amount of energy, whatever the real number is.
Well he also took the half of her mass which probably burned more than that. So least significant values probably evens out.
Net_Spider Yeah but in all fairness that is impossible to calculate since to figure out how much energy she would have lost during that time he would need to know the precise amount of time she has existed all of her injuries during that time and the energy that is contained in a human soul to calculate how many souls she would still have so he could determine the amount of energy of a human soul. This means if he does not know the amount of energy of a human soul he could not accurately calculate the energy of a human Soul
I haven't watched FMA in a long time, but if souls contain a set amount of energy - and Father says in this video that souls are broken down to energy to make philosopher's stones - then couldn't you theoretically make a philosopher's stone out of *any* kind of energy if you were able to channel enough of it?
