  • In this video I diagnose and replace a rear wiper motor on a mercury Mountaineer. It would be the same process as a ford Explorer. The nut that holds them on the glass can be a real pain in the... well you'll see. -Enjoy!

Ahh brings back memories. My 02 Explorer needed a wiper motor replacement (Did a full diag, checked with test light, multimeter, and checked relays/fuses first...) And that nut was SO corroded I was cranking on it and could feel the glass flex. 02-05 are known for glass shattering randomly so I said screw it. Took the motor apart still bolted to the glass, and took my replacement JY motor apart and swapped the guts out. Works great now :)

Thanks for this! I just changed my motor assembly on my 08 Exploder.
Had some difficulty with getting the arm off, and I didn't have a puller.
However, some penetrating oil and whacking it with a wrench did the trick.

You really epitomize the need to constantly be thinking and paying attention to what's happening all through the job. The chance that you are often redoing or chasing someone elses job before you get to it requires a wider scope in the thought process. Those metal grommets were a prime example...one was one way and one the other. Good logic with the blend of intelligence and mechanical thinking applied. Excellent work Eric, love these videos!! This reminded me of my teen years. Remember the old metal 2-hole washer fluid squirters on GM's? When we took road trips to the beach with all our buddies in several cars, we'd bend those things forward, so they'd shoot 4 huge streams of washer fluid straight over the roof and onto your buddies in the convertible. 🤣 Then expletives would be exchanged back and forth to the entertainment of the Hampton Beach strip, with a few more squirts for good measure.. 😁 Good times!!
Man, if that ain't a piss-poor design, I don't know what is! There are alloys of aluminum that will not corrode that quickly ... and of course, FoMoCo (or any of them) chooses not to use them. Crap metal, and then they jam it through a hole in the glass, knowing it's going to weld itself in there, and possibly shatter the glass upon removal! Absolutely brilliant ... 😡 Automakers are becoming as expert as government at screwing you out of your hard-earned money ...

Boy do I have a story for you. Not particularly on this subject put following the path of a solid diagnosis. Got a customer that got the "500$"quote for ' No front wipers'. Not wanting to fire the partscanon at it, I followed ur example of finding the actual problem. Finally found the problem to be a defective relay in the TPIM as u would call it. Got a unit from the salvage yard and sent the happy customer on his way. Very satisfying troubleshooting. Thanks Dr O.

Good demonstration of the Power Probe and why it is so quick and handy. You only need to focus on the wire you are testing because you already have a good reference Power & Ground at the tool, as supplied by the battery. How many times did your "Scope on a Rope" Gator Clip come off or get a poor connection prior to "Scope on a Rope 2.0?" Good you mention using a test light though, still one of my favourite "Go-To" Tools. Steel Nut, Aluminum Threads, (low grade alloy casting at that), Water, Salt, all mounted in glass with "Moisture Traps", what a scary combination. Love the Chainsaw.... reminds me of Possum Lake on the Red Green Show. Duct Tape, the handyman's secret weapon. "If the women don't find you handsome..... at least they should find you handy."

No need to worry about twisting the studs off the glass when tightening. If they twists off, just back off 1/4 turn and your good. Also I can't understand why you worry about breaking the glass. If it breaks you can just rewind the video and it goes back together. My wife has a friend who needed a wiper motor changed on her caravan and i decided not to do it because with my luck the glass would have broken. She went to the university of CZcams and became youTube certified and did it herself and all went well for her. This was a great video, lots of suspense just waiting for the window to break. Glad it didn't for your sake.

Had the same issue with my 2008 Explorer..You can take these motors apart and what I found was the output shaft was bound up..Tap it out..Clean it up with abrasive paper..Re-lube it and your good for maybe a year..After doing this for about 5 years got tired of fooling with it and got a replacement from Auto Zone with a lifetime warranty..That was about 4 years ago..So far so good..If you break tabs off the cover, use some black zip ties in series to hold it in place..My cover now has 3 loops of zip ties and you don't notice them. You can tell if you have this condition by gently wiggling the stuck wiper arm. If the shaft won't turn at all that's your problem.

I sort of remember a past video when the A1 Cardone rear wiper motor was junk straight out of the box. Lol, Surprisingly this woman is on her second aftermarket unit when a factory unit would have solved the problem right from the start. Sadly, I'm guessing that the woman didn't want to pay the high price for the OEM unit. Either way, this was an excellent step by step process on how to remove and replace a rear wiper and motor on a Mercury/Ford SUV. If I was working on that stubborn nut, I would have freaked out because I don't have an impact gun and I would have used my breaking bar till either the nut came loose or a broke the glass. Either way, SMA did a quality job with little fuss.
