- In this video we have a look at a customers 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche that is having some issues with the power seat on the passenger side. A quick test shows that the switch is bad. We try to fix it Russian NPR style and fail. We can't get one right away so we make a little trip to the junk yard and save the day! Man I love the pick and pull.

Ok, let me clear this up for the people saying this job cost more than the new switch. In my shop I get $90/hr.
On diags I have a one hour minimum. This whole job as you saw was less than one hour. The salvage yard is less than 2 miles from my shop. I billed the customer my one hour diag fee and the price of the switch from the junk yard. The whole job out the door after tax was less than the cost of a new switch. It saved the cust approx $90 installing a used switch. Where ever you are getting your info from that this is a 3 to $400 repair I am not sure. Hope this clears somethings up.

I assume people think that because shops in larger cities charge $120+/hr for labor. But they don't realize that you're located in Avoca, NY where $90/hr is fair.
Yeah but the one thing these CZcams mechanics always forget to put as a line item in the bill to their customers, Is how much revenue they made from the repair video of their car. I feel like these mechanics who make more for the video than the actual repair should give a CZcams discount to their customers.

Just ignore all those armchairs master techs. Sadly, almost every shop still in business around here would have billed me for a new switch (don't forget there is a shop profit built into the list price) and sent me on my way. You have the ethics where you do the fix that works and spend the extra effort to save your customers money.
I wish you were near me. Honest good mechanic out here its 150/hr minimum and they wont work on enithing older than 2000 dont know why .....but my pride and joy it's a squarebody body and a bug so I am force to wrench on em
One thing that distinguishes you from most mechanics is your innate curiosity. It leads to better and more accurate diagnoses. You didn't just say 'This part is broken and needs to be replaced', but asked the question 'Why is this switch broken?'. And that is why you are so good.
And that's why your Bill is so High, in this throw away Society, at $150+ph Labour at most shops.
And when your getting a 22 year old doing the job and takes 3 times as long as God?
@@davidowencunningham2743 majority of mechanics bill jobs based on how long theyre projected to take. Job is projected to take 3 hours? You bill them 3 hours labor whether it takes longer or shorter. Granted there are jobs like these where he probably just does the flat hour. I think hes said he charges 80 for the first hour diagnosis, and something super simple like this probably only took 30-45min of that including going to the pick and pull. So 80 for that hour and a $12 switch with whatever markup he puts on parts. A lot of times he does the part teardown after hours but I'm doubting he charged them any extra time for pulling this one apart.

Nope, you’re paying for the building, heating, lighting, office staff, shop equipment like lifts, air lines, compressors, refuse disposal, waste oil/fluids disposal. That’s why your shop rate is so high.

I loved the attempt at fixing the original switch instead of just immediately condemning and replacing it. A lot of people forget that most electrical issues are mechanical in nature. I once had to deal with an old crown vic where it wasn't moving anymore, turned out one of the magnets inside the motor had unglued itself from the shell of the motor and was stuck on the armature, just jb welded it back on, and it was g2g.
I've been out of the field for about 15 years but still the family mechanic. One thing I always enjoyed most about this stuff is fixing over replacing. Stems from my Military mechanic days, you can't just "replace" parts out in the middle of nowhere. ;-)
I had a 84 Tracer, that the set function on the cruise control broke. Zero availability of replacement parts. I did learn to operate it using the slow down button to set the cruise. I never did get it fixed.
I have a Crown Vic but mine runs on gasoline so the motor doesn't have magnets.
It is great when you take the time to see if a bad part can be fixed before completely condemning it. The post-mortem is educational, you can't make it worse if it's already destined to get replaced -- but there's the chance that the part can occasionally be repaired and kept out of the waste stream. That wasn't the case here but it's worth a shot and worth the knowledge of how they work
I was raised in a auto shop, literally! My dad was a mechanic/owner and we lived in the back. When I watch the videos it's a chance to kind of hang out in the shop again, and listen to the banter trashing engineers and makers. Thanks!

I grew up on a used car lot. We did as many of our own repairs as possible. Then all my dads friends were mechanics and being autistic and curious, I wound up talking to mechanics, and if they could, they would give me broken parts to take apart and put back together
Understandable, I did the banter trashing of engineers and manufacturers when I was an aviation mechanic in the US Navy.
@@SouthMainAuto My wife's Dad owned a shop on 19th street here and I used to deliver his newspaper long before I dated his daughter (back in the 60's). I suppose that's where I picked up the insatiable thirst for working on my own stuff throughout my life - and doing some as a hobby, like automatic transmissions. Keep 'em coming Eric!! We enjoy watching and catching neat little tricks with the newer stuff. Pitiful how the rust eats things up and corrodes.

Guitar PIcks folks... from TV Remotes to Chevrolet Switches! People... CHEAP guitar picks. not NAPA, not SNAPA... haha... China. Not your designer picks that will get destroyed. Get the assortment of 50 for cheap!

My neck of the woods Wilbur’s is called Cherry Auto Parts. Best invention ever! They sure are serious at Wilbur’s with the wrist band tag and all. I have to pay a dollar to enter though and it’s a cash only business. It’s my amusement park!

As a fellow Western NY'r I absolutely LOVE Wilberts. Best junkyard ever! Great prices, their yards and facilities are always well kept and organized. I love going there. Personal favorite yard is the Williamson yard outside of Rochester.
Williamson location has saved me thousands thanks to two separate unscheduled meetings with deer.

Whenever I go to a pick a part yard, I end up venturing through most of the yard, then forget 1/2 of what I actually went there for in the first place LOL. You run across some interesting vehicles, as well as vehicles that make you ask why the heck its in there. Vehicles with absolutely no interior or exterior damage, either an engine or transmission failure probably and owner didn't want to mess with it anymore...or someone's parents died and they didn't want their 10 year old car, gotta have that new shiny one to show off to their friends/family type deal. Lots of good parts in those vehicles to scavenge, although prices are shooting up in these yards too now.

I love the fact you actually tried to FIX the switch as opposed to immediately consulting the GM stealership. Mechanics like you are rare. This is what I would do but I'm antique and reside in the dark ages.

In his neck of the woods it might make sense because the car probably won't last more than a few more years. In my neck of the woods that car will probably outlast the used switch so I would have paid the dealer price and moved on.
Drinking my morning coffee and watching this great video! My son and I visit our local U Auto Pull it weekly. With our combined 16 vehicles in our fleet ( yes it’s a sickness) this is how we keep our fleet running. We drive to Shreveport ( 100 miles away) quarterly just to visit the 5 pull it places there! Another great video Eric, you are so lucky having Wilburts just up the road. Over here in the UK, what we used to call breakers yards are all gone because of EU regulations. The scrap guys now remove the parts and post them on line, and charge almost as much as a new part.
People should really take advantage of the salvage yards more often. Why pay full price for aftermarket junk when you can get original equipment for very little money and a little bit of time and labor. One tip for the diy mechanic. Take a good look at your vehicle and make a list of the little things that are broken or scratched, maybe just some plastic Christmas trees that have been missing for years. This way you can get everything you need in one trip to the salvage yard and all that stuff is dirt cheap because the yards really don’t count on selling it. Sometimes they even give it to you when you’re picking up a part that costs a bit more.
I’ve pull screws out of trim and fuses from the fuse box for my obs ford and just pocketed them when I’m buying other higher dollar stuff. Probably wouldn’t have charged me anyway.

My DIY solution for aiding the removal of crap from plastic clip fingers -- strips of plastic cut from 2-liter soda bottles.
Slide the strips down in between the object/clip. The part will then come out like butta!
Always great just to hang out. The trip to Wilbert's only makes it better.
Now I want to go to the local pick and pull this weekend.

When I come out of the building and see the junkyard in front of me, I get the same feeling that I get when I come out of a stadium walkway and see the playing field for the first time. Oh the fun! The potential!
My local yard is PYP Pick Your Part in Mt. Airy, Maryland. Pictures of the cars online and all. Old name was Crazy Ray's, before they went semi-corporate.
It’s the journey that makes Mr. O so fun to watch. WHY is the question he’s always trying to answer , he’s relentless . Fixing is just not good enough, got to know why ha ha ha .
Years ago we owned a 1986 Pontiac Grand Am that started to have switch issues. I tried taking the switch apart. Big mistake. This video brought back some not so fond memories.
Folks utube is where the real money made . The repairs are for content. Eric is a fair and smart mechanic. This video in 2 days has alright made over a 1000 dollars. Not hating . Love this channel. Eric is smart and it shows.

great video. Just want to tell someone, that I was forced to go to the dealer. I replaced a TCM and some other work on a car, so it needed a wheel alignment and TCM relearn. The shop that I've gone to for wheel alignments in the past was terrible, so I tried the dealer. The Dealer did an amazing job! The transmission works great, it shifts, no more codes and the wheel alignment is spot on. Maybe not all shops are garbage.

Great video, as always. When I was a kid, my dad would always dig deep into why something wasn’t working; he instilled that curiosity in me. We took apart switches, solenoids, you name it, to fix it. Thanks for helping me walk down memory lane!
The cool thing is, sometimes you even managed to fix the stuff you tore apart to see why it wouldn't work and not need replacement parts....sometimes it was beyond fixing, but there was always that off chance something came loose that could be fixed.
I fixed my gmc 2500 g2500 4.3 with 300k on it alot of repairing broken parts plastic and tin but the rust monster

Excellent video. When I was a kid I spent much time n the "junk yard". The owners were friends and when they saw me coming they knew I broke my Plymouth once again. They had me covered. One time I bought a complete drive shaft for about the same price you paid for that switch. Transmissions were very cheap too! They treated me like family. They were WWII vets from the Greatest Generation....

Have a U Pull It in my town as well, problem is most of the time the car is striped out by hoarders the day it's brought in- that is literally these guys' entire life. Have gotten lucky a few times though.
The hoarders being the people who work at the lot, they remove a lot of the valuable stuff and post it on Ebay, Craigslist, or Marketplace for ridiculous prices...that's what they do in my area.
I've always dived into 'why is it broken' when I've fixed things since I was a kid (hella long time ago!) - but what that did was made me learn HOW it worked, so later in life when I was doing things for real it made it easier to fix things.
BTW, if you run into boogered window switches on these, they're REALLY easy to repair. They use a 'chicklet' keyboard switch where is uses a patterned PCB pad and a carbon dot to make the contact. Just gently tear it down, then use a white pencil eraser to clean up both faces. IPA to clean things up and you're golden.
I like the fact that even a brilliant mechanic appreciates a junkyard. TY
The odd thing about Wilburt's U-Pull, because those cars are OFF the roads of PRNY, they'll last longer!
We have a U-pull it in our town as well. Eric you and Ivan both always recommend OEM parts. Well, when you have a 30-year-old car a salvage yard is about your only option. (Sometimes NOS helps.) I was hoping you could repair the switch, but you got the customer back up and running. Great video!
They don't even have to be 30 years old anymore. After 10 or 15 years and no more parts. Lately you can't even get oem parts for new cars.

South Main Chevy Repair!
Back in the day there were several "pick and pulls" around in NH. Only a few left dotted around the state because they didn't want to deal with the draining of fluids and storing of parts that have fluids, etc that were mandated. The best one "locally" was behind the nations largest Arctic Cat dealer. Now I have to drive 45min in either direction or go into Massachusetts (albeit those are the big boy ones like LKQ).
How bout that Brandybrow Auto Parts? Brockton MA has Everett’s Auto. My go to as a rule.
@@Deadbuck73 Turnpike Auto in New Ipswich (just north of Towsend, MA), Bow Auto Salvage (basically Concord, NH). There used to be places around Shirley, Fitchburg, etc I'd go to. Basically I just go to the unifying website and see who's got what, and have it shipped.

Tips and clues! Use some zip ties to keep the tabs open as you work around the switch! Fixed a newer 2015 a month ago and tabs drove me crazy. Unsnap one side and the other clicks back locked!

Back in the olden days up near Binghamton, NY before the name UPullit was invented they were just called junk yards. Once a year on a Saturday they had a $50 day. You could get all you could carry out for $50. Two guys would take a hood off and load it up with as much as they could carry. Ah what fun the olden days were.

Wilberts is impressive even from a computer screen ! Nice and organized and clean...and they don't charge you just under the price of new parts like many do.
I was a mechanic for 40 years, I love your videos. I know you do most of what you do for education and content, I would have just swapped the whole panel and not messed with the jiggly bits as you call them. But a 👍up none the less.
A normal shop would do the same, when they don't have the time to mess around with stuff like that, throw parts at it and be done....but its always fun to tear something apart to see if you can fix it yourself if you are working on your own vehicle at home.
A good reason to charge for diagnostic time.

Yes, switches can be cleaned and fixed or replaced with a used part especially on your own vehicles. When it comes to customers cars, its always best to replace new.
Unless new is no longer an option. Although in those salt states, a car don't last long enough to usually need parts that are NLA.
I like going to Wilberts it's far better than any junkyard I've ever been to, pity it's 10,000 miles away from me and they don't seem to have many Citroen Diesels

Eric, you remind me of my husband when he turned 45 with the reading glasses, it does not get better no matter how much you hate the glasses, I promise in the next few years you will need stronger and stronger glasses if you do not learn to wear the Dollar General ones when doing close work. And you toes will not be long enough away to read anything either. Seeing is a blessing that only those of us who have worn them since childhood so we could see such things like trees, walls and bodies of water. By the way love your videos.

My wife's 2011 malibu had the same problem a couple of years ago. Installed a Dorman and it still works! Great job Eric!
A couple years ago, I tried one of those U-Pull-it places and they charged different fees just to get in. When I did pay the fees, I found that almost all of the vehicles were stripped of any valuable parts. Not all junkyards are like this but the u-pull near me was a big scam.
The pick a part yards where I live do that sometimes too. They also seem to randomly crush vehicles that haven't been on the lot very long either, while leaving others there for months or sometimes even years on end without any useful stuff left to pull. They also deliberately destroy a lot of stuff too moving vehicles around with forklifts, punching holes in oil pans, fuel tanks, etc. Ruining perfectly good parts because they are too lazy to just pull the drain plugs, or siphon the fuel out of the tanks. I guess that doesn't cross their minds they could have sold those parts had they not put holes in them.
If only I had the luck to live near this shop with such a highly competent mechanic whose favorite place is a junkyard one mile down the road and the gumption to use it in order to save me money. Avoca, PRNY does not know how lucky it is.

A tremendous amount of your success on this page i attribute to the access you have to wiring diagrams. If the general public had easy access to this same info i think things might be a little different. MAybe more broken stuff, but for the folks with some training and education, we could fix things.

Usually when I take a switch apart, springs, clips and spacers will go flying. I'll spend about an hour trying to put it back together and then go buy a new switch.

Part shortages, and vehicles being made now without any part support from the automakers doesn't help either....or older vehicles where parts haven't been made in decades LOL. Pick a Part yards are your only option in many cases, and usually the parts are better than the ones from the part stores.

Those picks are great for working on those plastic switch assemblies, but if there are multiple tabs, get a box of tooth picks. I jam a tooth pick into each tab and the switch comes apart. Get real tooth picks, the round ones, not the lameo flat ones. 😁
The junkyard IS awesome. It sucks one of our best local yards that's been around for many many years closed abruptly because of stupid affordable housing. It was my wife and i's favorite junkyard. We have pick n pull, but they are outrageous and they charge for each individual part. We do have a place called u part it, which is way better, but their inventory is hit or miss. I always pocket a ton of stuff at pick n pull so its worth my while. You never know what treasures you'll find. Except at pick n pull because they take stuff out and put it in their "thrift store" because they are greedy. And its all junk stuff. They even have core charges on the dumbest things. I bought a wheel with tire for my wifes car as a spare, they charged me for the wheel and tire separate, even though it was mounted already...THEN charged me a core for the wheel...so don't go to pick n pull unless you're desperate...and if itll fit in your pocket, take it. Wilberts appears to be super cheap and they run a good business so i wouldn't do it there. Pick n pull charges 50$ for a used MAF WITH a core in my area...we are taking risks with this stuff. And Pick n pull only pays up to 600$ max for cars...so yeah.

Personally, I love the wreckers. I could spend (and have spent) hours there just looking around, its somehow relaxing at least to me. You never know what you are gonna find there either. Thanks for the video!
I avoid them completely in late spring through summer and early fall because of all the dang wasps that love to build nests in all the vehicles LOL...otherwise yep, I've been known to get lost in a few pick a part yards for hours just wandering around looking at all the vehicles they've got. One of the yards I go to has a whole row of classic/muscle car stuff, although they're always stripped beyond use, but still interesting to walk by and look at what I could never afford to own LOL.
As AvE taught me, "If it ain't broke, keep fixing it until it is". I like the way you kept fixing that broken switch till it was in pieces :D
