- In this video I have a look at 2017 Jeep Patriot that was dropped off from an other shop for a complaint that the marker lights do not work. They replaced the T.I.P.M. but that was not the issue. Let's have a look. -Enjoy!

There's the difference between a "great mechanic" and a mechanic , The "great Mechanic" checks the obvious first, the other guy buys a TIPM.. Way to go Mr. O..
I like Mr. O's style, always start with the simple first. I know some that go out and buy parts because their friend told them thats what is bad but usually their 'friend' hasn't got a clue. Like the blind leading the blind..lol.....
"The Snap-on guy wanted me to take a gander at it..."
(Translation: The Snap-on guy found out I have a home equity line of credit.)
Oh, that's not good haha
Snap On would probably sell more of these if they came with a 5-year ARM that would be locked into increases no greater than 3.5% over the federal fund rate.
hahaha
I had a few Snap-on stools then I took a dump actually somebody stole my tools I don't work anywhere anymore I don't know where the Snap-on guy stops

I loved seeing the arc in the connector right before Eric noticed the smoke!
You can.....I saw the blue lighting arcs! 😄⚡⚡⚡⚡
I bet Chrysler saved a penny or 2 using the lowest quality connector they could buy. Unbelievable that 12 volts would actually arc.
Eric, I wore my sma shirt to my chiropractor appointment today and apparently he is a big fan of your channel, who knew?? Lol 👍🏻

so i SORTA did a one wheel brake job.... did all 4 corners.... with 3 boxes of brake pads.... and had 4 pads left over (had em keep it for next time)
Every mechanic can spin a wrench. You are the equivalent of an internest (doctor). You diagnose first and then fix. A different kind of mechanic. Keep up the good work!!
Letting the smoke out is easy. It’s putting it back in that creates issues.
You never trained on English Lucas Electrical Systems then ? No circuit diagrms, you follow the smoke trail. Replacment smoke is a stock item.
An instructor, I don’t remember who, where or when, at 32, that makes me feel old lol. He said once the magic smoke comes out, you cannot put it back in, so keep the smoke in because thats not a conversation with your service manager you ever want to have. Smartest advice I have ever gotten and it applies to everything related to this line of work.
We say the same thing in Avionics (Aircraft electronics)...... lol
Sure you can put the smoke back in, but have you ever priced out magic smoke canisters for the smoke machine? _Pricey_ 😆
This kind of learning, with multiple examples, repetition, and a solid core of fundamentals, is gold.

Haha be like hold my icecream 1 min later ahh there's your problem lady 😂
I wonder how customers get charged in such cases, especially if other shop's rates are lower. But I guess they wouldn't be sending the car to him to make a loss...
One hour minimun diag fee LOL
Eric didn't even have time to crack the beer open!
That's a good question.....
If other shops send the car to Erick then who ends up paying for all ??
The car owner or the other shop owner.??

Funny how anytime a Chrysler product has an electrical problem, everyone jumps right to the TIPM. Unfortunately this customer just paid hundreds of dollars for a license plate light harness.
Yes but the shop will probably just feed the customer a line of crap about the new tipm just needed programmed or something stupid. There’s shops out there that take advantage of customers that don’t better.
The part is only about $40. Finding a good shop is priceless.

canuckguy worried 99% of the people can barely drive their cars let alone fix them, unfortunately they also don't want to learn. I get very frustrated when I offer to teach someone basic maintenance and they walk away saying they can't do it.
Eric is smarter and more logical than the average shop mechanic in Western NY. That's why he gets all the diagnostic referrals!👍
“Walked all the way to my tool box and found it in my pocket” story of my life😂
It's worse when you walk to your toolbox then can't remember why you oh look a butterfly!

A lot of times I walk the 100 feet from my back door to the shop only to forget what I was going after while I'm unlocking the door. I just leave the door open and walk back to the house, and it happens every single time, when I touch the handle of the sliding patio door I instantly remember what it was that I was going after. It's just plain weird. But it happens.
I spent over a hour looking for my wire strippers and they were on the roof on my van then whole time. It was supposed to a 5 minute job! LOL!
@@ralfie8801 The trick is to say what you're going after as you go through the door. Works for me but the problem is remembering to do it. The one that really bugs me is looking everywhere for something that's in plain sight right in front of you.

Yeah, I’m always looking for something that’s in plain sight, or worse yet, already in my hand with a few other things!

As an industrial "MultiTec"(Electrician/mechanic) I unwind after work watching Eric O save people's day working multiple jobs at once making me remember even my bad days are not as hectic as his good ones. Love these videos.
Videos like this are what saved me from paying for a new TIPM, I wish every shop thought through problems the way you do.
Never ceases to amaze me how people can not have an ounce of smarts on them. Simple troubleshooting as you see done here, pinpointed the root cause. For South man, easy money
It's so easy to fall down the rabbit hole trying to make a problem worse than it is. I've done that myself. My old shop teacher many years ago always said to look for the obvious first. Great diag as always Eric O.
The power of visual inspection, love it.
Indeed!
Most are just casual observers that look but do not see, even trained professionals(supposedly).
Everyone in this class would not go out & buy four headlight bulbs if they all stopped working at once.
The parking light circuit includes the license plate lights & that both were out & not just one did not make anyone curious at the last shop?...they looked but were just casual about it.
Basic logic & reasoning powers are dulled & people are expecting the glowing screen to spit out the answer like some genie behind an LCD screen. Rub harder! ...lol
Also the power of having someone else in the shop to work the lights for you. I wonder if he would have caught it that quickly if he had to work the switch and run around the car himself ;-) Edit: I woulda wasted time investigating the Flasher first (but im a DIYer), so actually the big takeaway for me was indeed, "The Power of Observation." Also i learned how mosfets behave as opposed to fuses (see someone's else's comment in another part of this thread)
@@cmans79tr7 Now that i think about it , yes you're right & i can see how it may have eluded the last guy in other shop since the lights just flash off quickly.
Did this fault prevent the full lights from coming on or was it just the parking/ running light circuit?
Yes a bit tricky if you're on your own.
Your diagnostics approach to everything you do is just magical buddy!
I went to Auto Tech school back in 1989. The first day of Electrical workshop the instructor told us that everything electrical contains "magic smoke" and that's what makes it work. Then he took a piece of 16 gauge wire and connected it across the two terminals of a 12 volt car battery. The wire started smoking as the insulation started to melt. He told us he had just let the "magic smoke" out of the wire so now it was no good. Some things never change. Thanks again for a really great and useful vid Dr. O.
Eric gave some damn good advice at the end. Don't assume anything, do your job, diagnose using common sense, let the vehicle tell you what is wrong or right! Smart guy all around.
Another perfect reason why i Love this channel. Eric’s diag skills are second to none. I feel like I learn something every time I watch a video. Great Job Eric!
Great diagnosis Eric, I hope the other shop made it worth your time for fixing their problem!
Your the best auto doctor i have seen on the tube.... we need more people like you who love the work enjoy showing it.... thank you for giving me aexcuse to grab a beer and watch a"show".
Awesome job Eric! This is a great example of just usin your good ole peepers to guide you to the easy things first. Top notch!
You are a troubleshooting legend! Excellent observation skills.
The TIPM was screaming out short circuit and almost seemed to be flashing a code to get your attention. In this case study the TIPM actually worked as designed and you went straight to it.
Good work young man :)
When Eric showed the lights blinking 3 times then quitting, my first thought was that’s a circuit breaker resetting then totally tripping. Next thought was hot short to ground was taking place. But it’s not very likely I would have thought to check the license plate lights. This is where Eric’s experience, skill set and understanding of the whole electrical system and how all it’s parts function came to the party. As far as the other shop is concerned, they at least figured out they needed help and were wise enough to seek out Eric’s skill set to help them with their repair. With Eric’s help (paid for of course) the other shop was able to complete the Jeep repair. How it was actually billed and paid for would be an interesting sidebar, but not necessary for this video. Seeing the visible short, sparks, melting plastic and smoke was a bit entertaining.
I stumbled across your channel a few months ago and have watched almost all of the videos that you have posted. I retired a few years ago from a long time auto repair career and find your videos very interesting. I salute you for your down to earth way of repairing vehicles while looking out for the customers best interests as well as their pocket books. Your diagnostic skills are up there with some of the best techs that I've known. Your ability to explain the situation at hand makes your videos a step above most others. Please keep up the good work. I must make one correction though, the Jeep Patriot and the TIPM were developed during the dark years of the Daimler/Chrysler debacle, not the Fiat/Chysler merger, not that it is any better.
Thank you Dr. O. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week.
You should charge other shops more the easier it is to find the problem they can't figure out. I love how you figure out things so quickly, love your methodology. I follow much of the same process, it always amazes people how we can figure things out so quickly. Good video!
Love your electrical diagnose and repair videos, they are great! Good electrical mechanics are few and far between. That is why when word gets out, other shops sub out their electrical problems, cheaper and more cost efficient for them rather than spending hours trying to figure out what the problem is or chasing the wrong circuit.
Had a Jeep WJ with several weird electrical issues but I like how you simplify diagnosis and keep things simple in the explanation. Electrical issues make my head feel like it will explode sometimes. Having a good wiring diagram would be a good start as well but you found this one very quickly. Thank you for making the video.
Eric you probably won't see this but I just wanted to say, thank you. You are very honest and try to save the customer money by offering used. Not a lot of mechanics around here do that. I work on my own vehicles, but I hear the stories. I just wish I understood live data as good as you. The car gods are smiling upon you 😀
An excellent example of skipping a full visual inspection on a failing system, and how it can bite you in the ass. You are a generalist like most other shops that are not brand affiliated. You can fix anything, because your diagnostic technique keeps you from jumping to conclusions. You do system fault analysis to find the issue and verify your findings. Excellent work Eric!
I LIKE THE WAY YOU DEDUCT THE PROBLEM. GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL. THANKS.
Good find. I was wondering how a vacuum leak would effect the marker lights! LOL! I wasn't thinking white smoke escape!
This always happens around Christmas. They put a flashing bulb in.
The one with the red tip. Lol!
Having spent my life in the north, I am so thankful to now be in the south and not have to deal with salt and rust any longer. Every car I had to let go was because of rust but they still ran great.
Eric O., in the know!! A good diagnostics show! Eric is a TRUE CHAMPION!!! South Main Auto, baby!!!
That was perfectly in frame and zoomed in just right. In fact I thought I saw a spark in the connector just before the smoke. I was like "it's smoking," but no one could here me.😁
Sorry had to leave another note, You said "Learn how the system works". I have been yelling for 40 years to my wife and kids, "learn how the light switch works". Love it. :-)
I’m amazed by the small things manufacturers do to warn you of an issue, like my Subaru for example. If I have a brake light out, my radio will dim when I use the brakes.
The problem is interpreting the signs and meanings.
Subarus and dimming go hand-in-hand. My love of Subarus dimmed once I started pulling the H6 engine from my wife's Tribeca due to the blown head gasket (even with yearly coolant changes with the Subie coolant and their 'saves the head gaskets' additive).
Eric, funny that you said don't get sidetracked, should have said, "keep it simple". Sure seems to me that the tech at the other shop did'nt do any basic checking like you did. Last week , i had a car that was diag by a tech that was fired a week before. The tpm light was on, he diag a bad rfh, replaced it, the problem persisted. So, he diag a bad cluster. A week later, the dispatcher gives me the ro, said that i had to put the cluster in. So, i put the replacement cluster in, and guess what? The problem was still there. I decided to grab the tpm tool and check the sensors in the tires, found that every sensor was dead. The hack tech did not start with the basics, just assumed bad parts. I put new sensors in the tires, problem fixed. The best way to start any diag is to work by the "KISS" principle.
Great diagnosis Dr O, too short though, not seeing Mrs O, and food.
Thanks for sharing.
Another problem "hidden" in plain view🤔! So often we forget to check the obvious. You the man Eric!
Great video showing the importance of keeping it simple, with the added bonus of the Epic Eric quote....." Better show you the marker lights working as some folk out there think I do one wheel brake jobs" Nearly spat my tea out!
Eric: *works on jeep and takes jeep hat off* 😂. Great video and thanks!
When I saw the regular interval flashing I wondered if the turn signal flasher might be involved. But nooooooo -- it is cycling on the overload protection.
I guess I am too old school for these new electronic wonders.
As are we all, but that's what the companies want!!!
Eric is THE MAN!!!!! Love the VigJoo's!!

This was a welcome treat to start my long shift. Thanks!
You are mechanic that know the old way and not a parts replace till it is done I love watching you fix and you are funny doing it
You the man other shops bring their problems to you 👍
Simple, but brilliant diagnosis. Spent a couple hours chasing an electrical problem until I found that the contacts on a bulb had shorted to each other.
I think I FINALLY just figured out what the "what do you want me to do, chop it off?" thing means. ;)
That was my first guess within the first 45 seconds. Dirt road equals vehicle failures. Great catch on that one .
Excellent example of the rule that the visual inspection is always among the first, if not THE first thing you do in the diagnostic process. Thank you. Now I am going to find out why "Some Dealerships Suck".
put one of your business cards in the glove box......for future reference.
Suggested that some time ago but apparently it may backfire.
Maybe they'll see their car in an SMA video and figure it out. But then again, if they watched SMA, then they wouldn't be at the other shop in the first place.
Awesome - yet again SMA proves it’s skills. I think even Mrs O could have sorted this one
It just blow my mind how MR O makes everything look so darn easy especially while filming!!!!!!
Wow, i have to say that is a great approach. Excellent work!
Eric O. The modern day "Everyman", humorist and satirist. AND, a damn good diagnostician.
Mr. O's diagnostic skills are fascinating to watch in action, however, several channels also provide this. But, SMA is blessed with the running commentary of Mr. O and the humor, satire and frustration he finds in every day events. The combination of Diagnostic logic and his running commentary draws me in and makes me a dedicated fanboy. God I hate that term.
Keep pumping them out Mr. O!
I'm in awe that - apart from knowing how the system works or is supposed to work - you immediately noticed the plate lights didn't work. It's that simple observation that allowed you to diag the real problem in 3 minutes flat. I would have totally missed it, 100% sure.
Saved the Parts Cannon for another day.
Like I always say you got to be smarter than what you're working on!
I was taught that it was called "Going down the garden path." Great teachers have had such an influence on my trouble shooting skills. It is also fun to watch the new, book smart techs get out smarted by old school street smart techs.
Your powers of observation have no equal and is so important when tracking down a problem. Knowing what normal is when something is broken can quickly get you pointed in the right direction.
As a 10 year Chrysler dealer tech, my first thought was the TIPM. We got my wife a new 2012 Chrysler 200 in May, wipers quit working in July at 2069mi, our electrical genius helped me narrow it to a bad TIPM. Eric O takes the time time to do the right diag. We need more technicians in dealerships that don’t throw parts on and cross their fingers. Just because its a common failure part doesn’t mean its the problem.
Sweet! A small fire! I've been waiting for this day, Eric! 😂🤣😂 Leave it to FCR to make it happen in just barely THREE years ... 😵
That was an interesting mode the marker lights went into. I'd imagine that short was pulling many times the amperage of those little LEDs. Not enough to blow a fuse, but enough to flake out the computer. It must pulse the circuit if it detects amperage out of the norm. Interesting!
Nice of Snap-On to rope you in with their new tool there! I already forgot the name of it ... I'll have to rewind the tape here ... Hopefully they offer a 30 year mortgage for said tool.😁
Remember the "KISS" terminology. Words to live by, awesome video bud.
Sometimes we as mechanics get tunnel vision. We have to use logic in anything we do and look out of the box at times!! LOL Take care and stay safe!!!!
Thanks for the video Eric!
Good thing you rescued it, They were about to load the parts cannon.
Thank you Eric for sharing your knowledge . that was a good tip.
Eric, very helpful video, we have jeep and if have this problem, now I know !!
Another great one video, hope you saved those people some money!!!
If another shop replaced a part and then sent it to SMA, you can be sure that the part wasn't bad.
AND that's why Eric wanted it swapped back to the original one.
Most likely end up keeping that extra part because we all know it is still good.
FET: field-effect transistor. They're nice because they provide a lot of isolation from the control circuit to the power flow. Great diag!
They don't inherently provide protection, however (and they provide less isolation than a relay). There has to be a separate current-sensing element talking to the control circuit, which then drives the FET. You could use a regular transistor in the same role, however you would then have a fixed 0.6V drop across the transistor (which translates to heat). FETs still have a voltage drop, but it's purely resistive and amazing advances have been made in reducing this over the years. As for why they use a "smart" circuit instead of a simple fuse - I would say Eric is right - it's something they get for free when implementing the "bulb blown" detection.
@Jason Bowman ,i agree. Less printed boards with surface-mount components the better.
Especially when you have continual production cost pressures put on the electrical design engineers.
Less complexity the better & certainly cold solder joints are a continual plague.
Nice catch on this one, you could see the spark in the connector.
Can't believe the other shop missed that.
Lazy maybe?
Thanks for the video.
Great work! You got to the problem quick.
