I got a horse women can ride
Real cute detail: The Professor's Mother mentions her friend Sue working at the museum... Sue is the worlds most complete fossil of a Tyrannosaur skeleton, located in Chicago, IL.
That’s freaking ADORABLE

So Professor’s Mom and Sue were gettin’ it on at some point. Hot.
OMG I saw that fossil and it was literally amazing! I didnt even realize that's what he meant
@@nr6916 yeah! you may have also seen it at a different location depending on how long ago it was. A lot of those exhibits move from museum to museum some. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Sue as well but I haven’t been to IL, just a bunch of the ones in and around NYC and Washington

Joyce's "I don't like the way you talk about yourself" was so sincere it was adorable. Can't get enough of this show, hyped every time an ep drops!
As he was saying that, I said out loud, "Don't talk about my friend Ryan like that." I'm glad Joyce was there to tell him that. We all need that friend to pull us out of self-deprecation.
Wanting a blank tombstone so that others can "write their own judgements" of her life is so amazing and interesting IMO. It makes me think that everything scandalous in this story were just horrible rumors during her lifetime, and rather than fight them, she let her beneficial laws & reforms speak for themselves and left it up to people what they wanted to believe.
It was her son’s idea, which adds a whole other layer.
I mean its hard to say how much, but its unlikely she didn't do some scheming to get where she was, men had to do it to reach their positions of power back then and the environment was even tougher for women.
And that's why the details are always a little fuzzy, people who go down in history will have a lot of things supposedly happen to them in their lives that purely originate out of rumours, and then we in the present choose to believe them sometimes for no deeper reason than because it's fun
Yea all her kids were just killing them selves and locking them selves up lmao.
Girl power amirite?
@@doc-holliday- "Girl power amirite?" Wow XD i have been destroyed by le epic facts and logic, here good sir take my upvotes i tip my fedora to you
No, it's not about "girl power" what are you some kind of incel? If you knew anything you'd have already come into this knowing a woman like Wu would automatically be viewed unfavourably by Confucian scholars, even without any murders her life would have offended their sensibilities.
Rulers of ANY gender and any Asian historical figure for that matter that made major waves will have their virtues or negative actions alike exaggerated to suit a narrative of people who come after them, for centuries.
Spin a wheel and pick anyone else, man or woman. You will come across spurious tales that emerge long after that person dies, and people will popularly choose to believe them.
The fact that Ryan was so confident in his incorrect explanation of why the phrase "baker's dozen" exists is absolutely hilarious
So we both saw that tumblr post in 2016 huh?
He's wrong? Aw....it made sense though! That's a bummer.
@@Bystander232 I read all of this in the professors Vocie, I see he's also rubbed off on you. I'm sad that they still don't do these practices today.
Has to do with old bread laws in England against bakers shortchanging their customers on the weight of the product. So a baker's dozen included an extra piece to avoid potential fines for inadvertently shortchanging the customer.
joyce jokingly saying it's "a little discount" is so funny bc she's more correct
Historically it’s actually dubious that Wu Zetian actually killed her daughter, as it’s the kind of thing where the oldest historical records don’t identify a cause of death or incriminate Wu at all. Then years later; suddenly they started saying SHE killed her daughter, the sources by political men who despised Wu Zetian and her historical role as a female leader. It’s just as likely her baby died by chance and she decided to take advantage of the situation by incriminating her rivals instead of just mourning her grief.
She does seem like the type of person to use their dead grandma's funeral as a "get out of class free card"
I watched "Empress of China", which is a drama that gave an alternative look into the life of Wu Zetian and !! it really did give me some perspective. Of course, she may not have been entirely innocent and has done unethical things to get to and stay where she was, but I think I can kind of see why after the drama + thinking about the lives of women back in those days
@@clairemend4825opinions on WuZeTian have been two sided for a long time. One say she is cruel and cunning, another say she is merciful and wise. The majority deem her as someone who is awesome.
Records show that there might be changes in her records (Shi Shu) after Tang Dynasty ended, like every man of that time do, they dont like woman who is above them, hence alteration on her record might happened. But her opinion got better as it got closer to modern time, which could be proven as her title got bigger as time goes after she passed away.
During that time, while Tang Dynasty is more open minded than all the previous dynasty, woman social status is still low. For Wu Ze Tian to able to control the country, its practically miracle at that point.
However, there is no doubt she is a good leader for the nation. And the first and only female ruler existed in China history
People should know about this, everything that has been negatively said/ alleged about Wu Zetian was accused after her death so no one really knows the real truth. Despite what’s been told, there’s no denying that Wu ZeTian’s time of ruling benefitted China.
Yea, and I feel like your daughter dying and taking advantage of it to incriminate your rivals will help you to not really have to face your grief of losing your child, which is the worst grief you can go through.
I kind of wish they'd mentioned what happened afterwards: Emperor Zhongzong lasted all of 5 years before being poisoned by Empress Wei, who was basically de-facto ruler of the country anyway. Empress Wei then became the Empress Regent... for about 17 days until she was overthrown and Ruizong became emperor again for two years, but the real power behind the throne was his sister Princess Taiping, the daughter Wu Zetian didn't kill (the one she supposedly killed was Princess Si). So TLDR; for like seven more years after Wu Zetian's death, the country was still pretty much ruled by women.
She didn’t actually kill princess Anding. I read Chinese sources, and apparently Wu Zetian just took advantage of her daughter’s death to target her rivals.
But her granddaughter (Princess Anle) & daughter-in-law (Empress Wei) were a lot more cruel.
Ya the whole “wu Zetian killed her daughter” thing showed up in the records centuries after the fact. Now I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure they didn’t have cctv vcrs sitting around in storage boxes so how would they figure it out centuries later the cause of the child’s death and who did it? (Hint a sexist historian)
I love how according to the professor, dragons aren't real, but time travel, genies, and talking puppets are
“Talking puppets” of course they are real I mean very few puppets don’t talk but those are the more archaic of their species
The Professor is a well versed on mythical creatures. He took a course at Puppet Univ!!!
How dare you question his credentials 😂
Well of course he believes in them he experienced those events but he hasn't experienced a dragon yet... possible tie-in for the next season?
Joyce is one of the best guests this show has ever had. Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that she and The Professor's mom are never on screen at the same time? Weird.

Sorry to get too serious and all joking aside…but as someone with an anxiety disorder, I hope Ryan understands how great he is, how much we love all that he has done and knows he should take great pride in his accomplishments!
LET'S GOOOO
Some corrections on fuzzy details:
- Wu Zetian was never Taizong's personal secretary. She was just kind of ignored during her time in his harem, with the exception of getting an "art name" bestowed by him, Mei-Niang (Charming Lady). So she was noticed by him at some point at least, but ultimately she wasn't his type and their age gap was too big, so she had no luck. Her actual job was supposedly changing his sheets, and she met Gaozong while they were both serving the deathly-ill Taizong.
- The baby daughter likely died from natural causes and Wu Zetian made the best out of the situation by trying to pin it on Empress Wang. This is not to say Wu Zetian wasn't capable of killing her own kids, but it doesn't make tactical sense to deliberately sacrifice the baby when it's impossible that Empress Wang would have ever been alone with it. There were bound to be servants around. Hence Empress Wang was never found guilty; it was some other bogus charge that brought her and Consort Xiao down later on. It's especially suspicious when accounts of the incident GAIN in detail as the centuries go on. You'd think those later historians (who were very misogynistic) were personally under the bed when it happened by the way they described the entire sequence of events in dramatic detail. The earliest account only says the baby "died suddenly."
- Zhongzong never asked Wu Zetian if he could make his father-in-law prime minister, he just went ahead and did it, which was the problem. His wife was indeed ambitious, but she only started making moves AFTER Wu Zetian died, so I wouldn't say Wu Zetian was ever intimidated by her or that she was the mastermind behind this. It was Zhongzong's own hot-headed f*ck up because he thought he could do whatever he wanted now that he was finally emperor.
- Crown prince coups aren't that weird in the Tang dynasty. Gaozong himself only came to the throne because his brother the former crown prince tried it and got deposed, and their dad came to the throne through his own coup. Taizong started a bad precedent (and had the NERVE to be shocked when his sons tried to pull the same sh*t on himself 😂)
Ok, that makes sense because it didn't make sense that she would kill a baby that the emperor adored. Like she could use her baby girl for something else in the future.
I had been looking for Xiran to comment on this and finally found it ^^
i am so glad you showed up here lmaoooo i was kinda twitching because your video about her was what inspired me to do a deep dive on wu zetian myself and i was like NOW HOLD ON

Ryan staring into the distance reevaluating his life choices while listening to a dragon sing about boning really encapsulates this show lol
Lmao I love how he checks his watch.
oh yeah absolutely - in a nutshell, the season is pretty much vignettes of ryan's life as a pre-breakup, post-breakup, and maybe-time-for-a-loopy-different-start-again kind of dude. and belle of the ballads is def a pretty perfect encapsulation of his coping mechanisms : lip-sync and w dreamysinging while overlookingotallyonelydragon who KILTS WAYYYYY FOR TOTS"
I love that a real person decided to make up a story about their father being a dragon to give themselves more respect and then hundreds of years later, as a direct result of that, someone makes a song and performance in which a puppet sings the world's horniest song about very consensually banging their mom. It is amazing. I love humans.

I’m pretty sure he’s actually even better than what we see on the episodes - during the end cards on these videos sometimes a “studio” version of the song of the episode will start to play, and it sounds like Shane singing normally for them sometimes. Idk if it’s Shane that does those cause some of them don’t sound like him, but I’m pretty sure some of them are. So I think he’s actually legitimately a good singer but dumbs it down/hams it up (however you want to put it) for the sake of the performances during the episode.
I actually think the singing at the end may be Hughie Stone Fish, who’s credited in the description! (At least the for the end cards that really don’t sound like Shane!)

I was half expecting Xiran Jay Zhao to show up lol.
The real reason for a baker's dozen is that bakers used to try and save money by making the batches smaller, so a law was passed that if a batch of rolls/whatever isn't heavy enough, the baker would be flogged and/or go to prison. But since weights can vary from roll to roll, bakers started adding an extra roll so they wouldn't risk going under the line. (This is from 13th century England under King Henry III)
Was going to ask if this is who the book iron widow is inspired from lool

I own a book called "Rejected Princesses" that goes over a lot of woman badasses throughout history, and we've covered a lot of them in this series that I can't help but wonder if Shane has a copy too.
I wished I had that book 😂
Best part of this episode is how confidently wrong Ryan was about why they call it a baker’s dozen
(It’s because in medieval times bakers could be punished by death if the weight of their loaves was not above a certain threshold so bakers would include a mini 13th loaf as security)
Shhh if we all spread Ryan’s version it becomes true

I will say, it is HIGHLY unlikely that she ACTUALLY killed her own daughter. It's much more likely that the daughter died of more natural causes and Wu decided to use the situation to her advantage. But we have to remember that a lot of this history was written by people who REALLY hated her. Xiran Jay Zhao has 2 videos covering Wu's life time that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants more details on all the court drama that went on.
AYYYYY XIRAN JAY ZHAO FAN
One thing I really appreciate about Shane is that he tries to get pronunciation right. The way he said Wu Shiyue and Li Yuan was pretty accurate, and tend to be hard for non-Chinese speakers to pronounce.
Even the dynasty and location names were good! Also love how he does history from all over, including Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
I'm impressed that he pronounced Li Zhi the way he did. It's not an easy sound to make for an english speaker.
I absolutely second this! It's such a relief to be able to finally watch a history show, however silly it might be, that actually puts in the effort to get all kinds of names pronounced correctly and respectfully. So many creators don't even bother to look up the correct pronunciation, or they play the "I'm not gonna even try, sorry NON-ANGLOS" xenophobic cop-out.
I'm so glad someone is appreciating his pronunciation!!
To anyone wants to read a little bit of history: Although Wu Ze Tian has been portrayed as a woman who did whatever she could to hold power onto the throne, she actually did a pretty good job ruling China. Whatever she had done positively that benefited the country is definitely recorded in history and since her image has been portrayed mostly in the negative side, it’s also known that all of the alleged things she had done were spoken after her death, so basically no one in todays time really knows what’s true or not but that’s what most people tend to believe.

It's such a good book!!!!! Best fiction I've read in a long time 🥰
t hat's on my tbr!
I laughed at Ryan's hat so hard that my neighbors definitely heard. Amazing ep as always, love a historical murderous woman
LMAO the way i gasped once i saw the name in the thumbnail! Iron Widow fans rise up!
shane always producing the most catchiest songs hes a legend >>>
"We here at puppet history believe women should be able to ride horses!" Back with the hot takes this season, I see
LOVE Joyce’s title for herself, thank you for returning Lily of the River
the history of this woman’s life continues to change. when I did a project on her in school, this story was much different. a lot more graphic and brutal and more killing and banishing of her children. zhongzong also took the throne via rebellion. but as I’ve kept up with the history on her, lots of details keep changing. it’s weird
Shane should start creating more music. Despite his voice inflections, you can tell he is a great singer.
Omg! I commented for a Wu Zetian episode back in season 2!!! This is amazing to see! Important note that after Wu Zetian died future governments lead a smear campaign against her so some of the kid killing is still questioned by historians today due to a lack of unbiased records 😅. Thank you for this episode idk if it was because of my comment but I’m so glad you covered such a powerful female leader ❤
"It was the olden days, we love drama." Hell yeah, Joyce ❤
Thanks, Xiran Jay Zhao. I've already heard of Zetian because of them
Rewatching this season so I can continue to be baffled by the fact that no one pointed out that all the puppets are supposed to be in freakin purgatory and shouldn’t dorthy Ruth not be there then?? Because I assumed if she wasn’t in the Esther then she was a hologram too but ?????????
Oh my lord I was dying for this history chapter to be talked about on the Puppet History! I would have died if you got Xiran Zhao in this episode today because they made a video about Wu Zetian and wrote a book based on her, Iron Widow!
*they made a video!
@@heresakissmuah Your right! My mistake! I completely forgot!
@@isolatedone616 Hey don't worry!! The important part is that you corrected it🥰
Ive watched a video about her recently. Its sad how thr males teied to erase her existance and left her a bare memorial after everything she did for her people. She made history they quickly forgot.
Tale as old as time, luckily historians are persistent. Like detectives
Seems just like the classic man thing to do. Happened to the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut as well.
It happened plenty to male leaders too, it's just that women typically need to put in some extra work to get in and stay in power that winds up making enemies
@@Phatocatto I was thinking that too.
And she did basically either kill or betray her children so appreciate the history but not the person
This song is EVERYTHING when are we gonna get a Spotify profile for Shane?????
watching ryan just calmly take it in while shane is able to construct, write lyrics for, and perform a dragon fucking skit on his very own niche history show, is why watcher had to happen
Oh so dragons aren’t real but genies are, professor?
I mean, he's never met a dragon.
(Edit: idk if our talented song dragon counts, since he's a puppet.)
Wu is the epitome of "I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it"
That dragon puppet might be one of their best puppets yet! It's cool to see how the quality has improved over time!
I am so happy to see joyce on another watcher video, she’s just such a delight
As a massive history buff, I enjoy this show so much. I get to learn about history, and I get to laugh as well. Thank you professor for the amount of time it takes to research all of these things.
"It's fun to believe in dragons" says the immortal puppet
My husband loves baking. The bakers dozen came from mid evil times where bread was sold by weight. If the weight was below the legal standard the baker could have their hands chopped off or put in jail. Bakers dozen was essentially insurance for bakers to make sure they didn’t get in legal trouble for short-selling bread
The sea dogs are the best bit on the show! The B-Boys are great too! I love to hear all the squeaky basketballs bounce around! And I'm really excited to see how the Double A bit gets more power, and becomes real flashy!
Sorry Ryan, bakers dozen was set up because of medieval law that a loaf had to be a certain weight, if it was less than the allotted weight the baker could be severely punished.
“That’s about what I expected” with the professor’s voice breaking was my fav moment 31:57
This is legitimately the best episode of this series so far and I’ve seen all the episodes. Great job.
