Another Pirate Queen is Ching Shih, also known as probably one of the most successful pirate in history.
She was a Chinese prostitute who married Zheng Yi, a very successful pirate. After he died, she took his place as Pirate Lord, a role she took very seriously. She was a strict leader and placed laws for the pirates under her command, such as the crime of raping women being punishable by death. Ching Shih commanded over 800,000 sailors and 400 junks - a fleet bigger than most countries' navies. When the Chinese government realized that it was near impossible to defeat her, they offered her (and I believe her crew as well) full amnesty, which she agreed to, and she got to keep her loot. In retirement, she opened up a brothel and gambling house.

@@GamerGrovyle Ching Shih was what the government called a problem and a hindrance lol. Her piracy was a huge thorn in the Chinese government's side. It was to the point that the Chinese imperial govt worked with both the British and Portuguese navies to at least corner her. They did, but she came out fairly unscathed. But the thing is, this incident made Ching Shih realize that she can't be a pirate lord forever - sooner or later, she'll either be killed or captured, likely by the hands of the navy. So she planned one last fatal raid and basically coerced the navies to her conditions, and the Chinese imperial govt begged her to just stop raiding and pirating. It's also considered a win, in way, because she was one of the few notable pirates who 1) built up her own legacy 2) kept her wealth from both her piracy days and brothel/gambling houses 3) and lived all the way up to the old age (at least by those times) of 69. Ching Shih lived and died a very wealthy and successful woman.

I think it was more that he didnt want to take care of her. Her dad had all of his money. Anne, the daughter, would have needed a man to 'take care of her'
They say she was hot tempered and ran wild but think of the time period. If a woman spoke before being spoken to she was considered out of line. If a woman had any other goal in life than becoming a mother she was judged. She was probably just a modern woman ahead of her time, and didn’t want to be oppressed or have her life dictated by a man. It’s also of value to take into account that all these anecdotes were from that era, so obviously she would be made out to sound crazy.

Stabbing isn’t a vibe but you don’t usually just stab someone when they’re being inconvenient, so there’s likely more to the story. Children at the time also weren’t really viewed as citizens, and she was a child when that happened so that also could have been blown out of proportion, or her side of the story wasn’t taken into account, just the maid’s (ie the adult).

A note on the mannequin, Selorm's comment on pirates being theater kids, and things -- I've heard/read that pirates, because of the vast amounts of down-time that they had, often wrote and preformed plays and/or musicals aboard their ships. :D

The original story of the sirens:
The sirens were originally nymphs who were assigned to guard Persephone.
When Persephone disappeared into the underworld(did you know, she wasn’t actually abducted? She just wandered into the underworld and decided to stay lol), Demeter gave them wings, some say as punishment in which they would have to search for her, and some say to aid them in retrieving her home.
The sirens aren’t mermaids as many think, they’re actually birds with faces of beautiful women.
They eventually gave up on the search and settled down on islands and rocks.
Because they gave up, Demeter cursed them. The Sirens' song was a beautiful, yet sad melody, eternally calling for Persephone's return.
The probable reason as to why they drown sailors is for revenge on what hades(who is actually the nice and not evil as often depicted), a man, did.
This is funny because many of history's greatest pirates were women. My two personal favorites: Cheng I Sao (Ching Shih), a Chinese pirate who controlled trade in Canton for a while, got super rich, backed the government into a corner, escaped all her pirating with no consequence and lived a full, happy life and Jeanne de Clisson (Lioness of Brittany), who revenge-killed a bunch of people for the unfair murder of her husband and terrorized the Normandy area, she also (I think) lived out her life happily.
Also another Irish pirate, Queen Maeve! I think she was from the North of Ireland and she was a fierce fighter! She's a much loved story
@@LannasMissingLink Grace O'Malley was also a Pirate Queen of Ireland who you really didn't want to mess with. She killed her own family if you betrayed her. And she met with Queen Elisabeth (The Tubor one) but refused to bow as she did not see her as her Queen.
Also Graine Mhoal (I forgot exactly how to spell it, gaeilge is a nightmare to learn😂), she had songs and everything written so when she returned from sea, the locals would sing for her return.

My favorite pirate was Jeanne de Clisson. She was a Frenchwoman in the 1300’s who sought revenge for her husband’s beheading. She had three ships, each painted black with red sails. Jeanne was infamous for leaving only one survivor alive after plundering a ship and telling him to take this message back “tell the king I am coming to kill him.”
Also, about the whole dressing the girl as a boy thing, boys were easier to explain. Young boys were commonly apprenticed, so having a young boy hang around you, especially if it was a family member’s, wasn’t that uncommon in those circles.
some of the most interesting characters in history were from the Golden Age of Pirates. Bonny, Blackbeard, Calico Jack, they would all be celebrities nowadays because of their flamboyant characters

Different pirate crews had their own flags. Jack, Anne and Mary's flag is the one we now call the Jolly Roger, probably the only pirate flag most people know today.
Also don't feel bad for John - the reason Jack tried to buy her a divorce was because John had her publicly whipped. The two escaped together after the refusal. Jack had actually been fully pardoned before this but threw that away to steal a ship and run off with Anne.
Mary was with them at the time they left Cuba, so Jack, Anne, and Mary were the whole crew of the William until they recruited more pirates.

Anne Bonny was my favorite character on black sails almost immediately lol. Not a huge fan of modern history, but that show made me start reading up on pirates a little bit. I watched this episode before but didn’t put two and two together until I started reading about the real Anne. She’s my new historical crush. Really hoping she bathed regularly.
