As a modern day Christian I can concur that God had nothing to do with a lot of the historical "Christians" back in the day...and a lot of so called Christians in present day frankly... sigh. Problem is that history is full of humans and humans are consistently inconsistent and generally sucky.
We are so proud of you guys!
I’ve been watching for another episode
This show is LEGENDARY. I've personally rewatched episodes several times to introduce it to friends. Keep it up boiiiiiis
if The Professor does the pantless, I think it's only fair for Ryan to do the show shirtless #FreetheNips
Honestly, if someone killed my husband and immediately turned around and asked me to marry him with no fucking shame? Absolute massacre. Absolute. Massacre.
Olga was ruthless but it was kinda on them for pulling that stunt and trying to act like nothing happened 💀
Honestly? Depends on the husband.

Literally in royal families claiming "incest" as the reason you dont want to wed someone is the ultimate way of saying "Ew I dont want you" since legit like no royal family member followed that rule with the exception of with their siblings (but the pope for the Catholic church did at one point sanction a marriage between half siblings but the marriage idea was changed thank goodness)

Oh no.
Don’t give Ryan ideas
I'm REALLY late on this one, but: avenging your family members was a pretty core piece of Viking culture. If somebody killed one of your relatives, you were basically *expected* to retaliate, and pretty often that meant killing people close to the person responsible rather than taking that person out directly. Brutal stuff.
You could get around that by offering blood money but it sounds like the Drevlians weren't prepared to do that, if they even could.
(Fun info; but i feel inclined to tell you that she was of ruthenian not scandinavian descent. As a slav i would like that known even if you do some ppl might be confused by this comment. Thx, have a nice day)

30:32 Imma add this to the professor. I was thinking “wtf could this murderous woman be the saint of.” So I looked it up. She’s the saint of widows and converts. Which I guess is the only thing that makes the slightest sense. This story was much more intense than I could’ve ever imagined.

Ryan’s ultimate are you scared is just titled: Are you scared of Blue Puppet Professors?
They should do the red baron
The blue tiny professor was charming, cute, knowledgeable, and dangerous. He would gather students and feed them knowledge about the world. And Jelly Beans. Stated as a joke. He'd say they were his droppings. But they would make your brain like him more and lure you to him. So when he made the brains fat, with intellect. He would sneak into their homes and eat their brains.

I love how all women rulers in history are all badass and ruthless-Hatshepsut, Wu Zetian and Saint Olga.
Please Professor, feature them more!!!
It is a general rule that if you rise up in power as a woman in a fairly sexist society, it's because you are EXTREMELY GOOD at what you do xD
I would love a Wu Zetian episode for sure!
@Alexandra Crofoot Boudicca's uprising was pathetic. She got absolutely mauled by the Romans.
That's because most rulers in non-democratic societies, regardless of sex, only become rulers by being raging psychopaths, or by being born into a family of psychopathic rulers (it is a largely genetic neurological condition). Bad-ass isn't the word I'd use for mass-murdering sadists but I understand that people don't see atrocities the same way when they're so far in the past, compared to how they're seen within the last 200 years. What's really hard to understand is that the Eastern Orthodox Church ever called Olga a saint, and still does. They actually want converts and widows to pray to her for help in dealing with their problems, lol.
Lets not glorify ruthless psychopaths in history just because they happened to be women. They may be a badass for you but Olga basically wiped out an entire ethnicity of innocent people just to avenge one man. Calling her a "saint" is even bigger mockery of the title.
@@strawmanfallacy8666 i think we should first tackle the bigger issue: there being statues of men who did similarly heinous things and history being rewritten to celebrate them.

What’s the character arc for season 4? Him secretly being a genie or being in league with the genie.
I think another reasons why Olga refused to get married again is that fact that during the Middle Ages, rich widows had a lot of power and authority as well as freedom. Essentially they had the same status as men if they were widows and would often become art patrons
And also she probably didn’t want anyone to be a competition to her son
Plus can you imagine being bossed around by some random man, just cuz he’s a man? I certainly would avoid marriage.
Also she probably didn't wanted for some dude rule over her land
@@gothsloth Yep, I would not re-marry either. Although she seems to have loved her dead husband a great deal, the perks of not being married back then seemed to be pretty great. Not that she didn't want her husband back, but, to go to a different husband would be a bummer after enjoying her status for years. Also, there's some world where I can see her husband, if he's influential enough, in a painful power struggle with the growing boy King. Or if not him directly then any of his son(s) with Olga.
That was why the witch trails happened: To take their money and land.

About ryurik, the details of this episode of history are disputed, but what they teach in schools goes like this. when the slavic and finno-ugric tribes established peace and created a union, they needed someone to be its leader, but couldn’t trust leaders of each tribe to not take advantage of the position. The solution was to appoint an outsider. They also were in need of additional armed forces, so they invited Ryurik, who came with his men. When he came, he and the tribes’ leaders made a contract, which listed his duties. He was supposed to rule strictly according to the law. In a way he was like a hired manager/military commander
BTW Rurik’s pure existence is debatable
and in reality Novgorod invited Ruthenians from Kyiv to rule over them. Vikings have absolutely nothing to do with Ruth.
23:47 actually, what happened was, she ordered the sulphur to be tied to the birds feet, and when they flew back home, they spread the sulphur all over the thatched roofs, and then they lit arrows on fire and aimed at the rooftops of the houses, and the fire spread crazy quickly
that makes sense, thank you!

After seeing the finale, all Ryan's little weird moments make SOOOO much more sense
It was actually unknown who were Olga’s parents, plus the most well known version of how they met. According to the general belief she was a daughter of some boat owner who asked for money in exchange to pass people to the other side of the river. That’s how she and Igor met, she was the one rowing the boat instead of her father, as he was pleasantly surprise it was told that as soon as they made to the other side he asked for her hand in marriage, but she rejected him. I don’t remember what he did to convince her afterwards, but as far as I know there was no blackmailing (if somebody thinks that way)
Perhaps, he burned a few villages for of enemies for her? Then she felt she had to honor the favor for him?

So, the ship thing probably wasn't hyperbole. The nobles in the area were Danes/Vikingrs, and Danes on a viking would carry their long boats over land to get to different rivers to navigate. A big ass crowd could easily do it.
Was gonna say, these were fairly small as far as boats go, and it wasn't at all uncommon to carry them :)
I remember seeing that in that game Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, the Viking units carried a boat and then threw it. I suppose then men Olga had carry the boat were pretty strong as well. Although if I were in the boat, seeing that I was about to be throw into a pit, my first instinct would be to bail, but then I guess the boat carriers would chase me down and kill me.

I'm seeing a pattern of Ryan constantly taking jellybeans from the Professor's satchel and it's got me thinking... what if he's doing that on purpose? Because the jellybeans could be the source of The Professor's power, Ryan keeps taking more from his satchel so he loses power which will make him vulnerable at the season finale and, like dear Olga, Ryan will finally have his revenge.
Note: I know this is quite late. But I watched the season finale about a day after it was uploaded and, hahaha, I guess my far out theory was accurate.
That’s what I’m thinking too.. at the end of this season premiere, one of the notes on his blackboard is to get more magic jelly beans, meaning he could be running low
Do you think he has an aliance with the elus?
That's the best thing I've ever heard hahaha
25:41… maybe there is lore here
so, how are you coping after the finale,
Bruh, this really needs to be a movie. This is crazy ass story. Even if most of it could be embellished.
talk about a super villain's origin story am I right? Or Anti Hero... or... something. Fuck I can't even place her. Is she a hero, or an anti hero, or is she the baddest female villain lead there ever has been?
@@AsianAtTheDisco009 there are some Russian movies and dramas about it.
Was just going to comment the same thing, haha.
@@AsianAtTheDisco009 can’t be a hero after the whole fire bird thing but maybe anti hero
Olga took her revenge to straight up Looney Tunes cartoon level. Just seems like shit Bugs would do to Yosemite Sam.
To be honest, the birds of mercy sound like something you’d say off hand as a joke, like “yeah yeah a bunch of birds representing mercy will make me happy for the murder of my husband.”
The Professor is kind of a cryptid. A cryptid of knowledge, with a mysterious backstory. That definetely doesn't involve a Genie.
Yeah, I mean a genie?! What kind of stupid idiot would believe that one is haunting a mysterious little blue puppet man traveling through time? Definitely not me!
By definition not a cryptid, as cryptids are unprovable existences
@@goldenknife3835 I guess so he’s just a mysterious and dark… possibly entity…
It would be funny if ryan invited everyone to the party except the professor just to watch him say that he isn't going to the party and getting more upset about it every episode
What if Ryan invited everyone to the party and pulls a Saint Olga...
That's what I thibk is coming, too
Like Ellen?
Olga: *twists a knife in someone's guts* "We were OTP..."
Me: "That actually sounds like a joke Oversimplified would make if he did a vid on her."
This episode came right in time. I’m taking a women’s & religion class this weeks topic is about her.
"They basically asked the Vikings to be the doms to their subs" made me smash the like button at light speed
Ruthenians didn’t establish connection with Scandinavians until 11-12 century,
so that part of a tail is a lie. (:
As an actual sub I fucking died when I heard that😂
Ryan’s Joker arc is coming to a peak watch out Professor
I often made jokes that my bonded pair of cats were like Olga and Igor. I would say that if anything ever happened to her kitty husband, my Olga would probably do the same for him if she could. We had to say goodbye to my Igor this weekend after seven years and this video has meant more to me in my grief than I can put into words. Thank you for everything. 💙
“Thanks for KitKat bars” Selorm is so precious 😭
Ryan’s deep fascination with unsolved murders makes more and more sense as the days go on...
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
This was so fun to be apart of! Also my reaction to that song was real! I still can’t believe that all happened 😂🤣🥰
you were too cute 🥺✨
you were such a great presence on the show!!! i hope you become a guest again next season
you were awesome! hope you return next season!
The way Olga mutters to herself "this is gonna fuckin' rule." as she walks away from the suitors is an underrated moment.
The Professor: "Ryan, how about you?"
Ryan: "Revenge, what do I think about revenge?"
The Professor: "Uh yeah."
Ryan: *staring at the Professor passive-aggressively* "They say it's a dish best served cold. I don't tend to care whether it's hot or cold. I just care that it's served."
I get the feeling Ryan is secretly plotting the Professor's demise. Maybe a particular Genie has been possessing him.
I love how unfazed Selorm is by Ryan clearly wanting to kill the professor 😂😂 like the professor pooping jelly beans kinda freaks her out but Ryans homicidal tendencies? Not so much 😂😂😂
I just find it so creepy how cute and innocent the picture of Olga is.
A renaissance image of a mid-medieval woman who would later become a saint!
She is the winner and titled saint so of course her picture would look the way it is
me saying “wow” at everything as if I didn’t take a women in russian history class in college and Saint Olga was one of the main women we learned about😅
It's ukrainian history, not russian. Counting us as russians is the most offensive thing for us, ukrainians.
@@user-ge6eh3fg2b справедливости ради, это история Руси. не только русская и не только украинская. какой бы идиотизм сейчас не происходил, предки были общие.
1:30 that season finale foreshadowing tho. they have such great chemistry it blurs the lines of script and organic conversation. very well done.
I love how Selorm tells terrible dark jokes in the sweetest voice.
Selorm is such a wonderful guest, love her enthusiasm and hope she'll come back for another season. but this episode really was a fun roller coaster of events, i would love to see an A24 movie about St. Olga lmao
I not sure about a movie but maybe a Netflix series.
green knight style
I haven't seen many people talk about this week's theatrical performance but this is probably my most favorite one out of all the other singing performances before, super catchy! I just wish that at the end of the performance the 2 birch trees could've snapped apart and pulled the little dude in half lmao
We need a Puppet History/Film Theory crossover where MatPat just theorizes on the Lore of how old The Professor is and if he's an immortal being who poops jelly beans. Also the TV Glitches. LOL
OMG, Policarpa's spool coming back to warn us all about being spied upon online, that's such a great touch.
Ryan's giving off Ricky Goldsworthy vibes.
Yep
I find it strange that I've never seen Ryan Bergara and Ricky Goldsworth in a room together but I've seen them both with Shane Madej separately on a great many occasions. I'm just saying, maybe it's a just a coincidence... or maybe...
@@samsizer2919 oh that would be awesome to see Ryan and ricky in the same room
Selorm is such a GREAT guest, her comedic timing for the "maybe all the killing has nourished her..." PERFECT
This was a very satisfying part of history, and love Olga's romantic loyalty to Igor, Olga performed outstandingly, she was awesome. Shane your song was incredible, possibly your best performance, but puppet history has many great songs, like the Donnor part song and molasses song too, poor horses in heaven.
