  • The original Super Mario Maker is probably my favorite game of all time, yet the original Super Mario Maker didn’t even life to see it’s own sixth birthday. It is no longer possible to upload stages.
So now that Nintendo officially put the original Super Mario Maker down, I thought it might be a good time to take a look back at, what in my opinion are, the two most interesting and remarkable aspects of the original Super Mario Maker. In this video we are going to discuss, what I believe to be, the best and the worst aspect of my favorite video game of all time.

@@Thornskade I had that problem with MM2. In MM1, my levels got a decent amount of plays, given that I didn't advertise them anywhere. But in MM2, I had one level that performed a lot better than I thought and every other level I uploaded got like 2-10 stars at the most. I remember I didn't even log into the game for half a year, then booted it up randomly and in all that time, I'd accumulated like 2 or 3 new stars between my 8 levels. It (along with Nintendo suddenly cutting all support) made me lose all motivation to even bother making levels anymore. Back in the MM1 days I would use the Mario Maker reddit to advertise my levels once in a while, but even that place seems completely dead now. :/

  • @marbleking8811
    @marbleking8811 Před 3 lety +84

This commentary resonates with me greatly and I’m glad that the struggles of Mario Maker creators are getting voiced out finally. I don’t expect many people to read this, but here’s my story as a level creator for Mario Maker 2.
One of the main criticisms with this video that I can see being said is “but Mario Maker has a sequel! Of course it’s natural for Nintendo to focus their updates and support on that instead.” This couldn’t be further from the truth, actually.
Mario Maker 2 was released in late June 2019, and Nintendo has confirmed, in one of their sparse announcements to the community, that content updates for the game have already ended. There were three content updates in total, the most recent of which was over a year ago. It took less than a year for Nintendo to move on from their game.
The only signs the community gets that Nintendo is still paying attention anymore, is from the strict and unjust moderation system (more on that below), and when they release a game patch.
These games patches, whilst incrementing the version number on the title screen, actually act as the opposite to updates. More often than not, the patches take away content; content that the community has found from hundreds of hours of research, and that are only made up of interactions of elements in the game, like Ceave was explaining in the video.
This is an oversimplified analogy, but it translates smoothly to much of the discoveries that the community has made about the game. Imagine that Nintendo saw Ceave’s “don’t look left contraption”, showcased in the video at 9:50 , and thought something along the lines of “we didn’t intend the elements of the game to be used in that way. Whilst it isn’t the case here, this contraption could be used in an unfair way to players, since they might not know what made the floor turn to coins if they weren’t told.” Nintendo might then decide to remove a fundamental feature of the game, such as allowing boos to be in enemy stacks, specifically to disallow contraptions like this one.
It is commonplace for Nintendo’s game patches to be hastily implemented, and break more features of the game than they “fix”. And remember that many of these “fixes” originate from fundamentally flawed reasoning in the first place. A common motto that originated in the Mario Maker fan community relating to Nintendo’s approach, is “Have fun, correctly”. Whenever Nintendo sees something that doesn’t align with their vision of what a Mario game should be, it gets booted from Mario Maker. Nintendo shouldn’t be allowed to govern what types and genres of creations get made by the community, providing that the creations aren’t rude or profane (which is what the moderation system would be for, if it actually did its job).
Moving on to the game’s moderation system, the critically important parts of it do function correctly, I will admit. Any profane language or adult imagery gets removed almost immediately. However, there is also the issue of Nintendo extending this moderation system into more of a censorship tool, and seeing it as their duty to remove anything that doesn’t align with their preconceptions of the kind of content that a Mario game should relate to.
They have a particularly strict stance on “glitches”. Half the time, the Mario Maker community doesn’t even realise that a combination of game elements could be considered as illegal, until Nintendo starts removing levels from their servers that contain the setups. If this happens too many times to a creator, they get banned from uploading levels at all, meaning that the $40 they paid for the game is now effectively gone.
And let me be clear here, the kind of glitches that provoke Nintendo to do this aren’t things that freeze the game, overwork the Switch hardware, etc. It’s actually simple things, such as a bullet bill launcher moving faster than it should, or a way for the player to clip through a one-way gate in the opposite direction. It’s unfair and unjust, and ought not to matter in the grand scheme of things at all. But Nintendo takes offense and lifts the ban hammer regardless.
Personally, I hate Nintendo. I absolutely despise their approach to community relations, how they treat the loving communities that build around their games, and how they have already started to ignore Mario Maker 2, a game that hasn’t even been out two years at this point. In fact, let me rephrase that; I would be HAPPY if they ignored the game. It would mean that the community would be able to design creative and innovative levels from a variety of genres, without the fear of Nintendo breathing over our shoulders and being all too ready to wield the ban hammer.
I feel like I speak for a lot of the community when I say that we would be very willing to move to another game creation engine immediately, if it weren’t for the fact that Mario Maker and Mario Maker 2 are by far the best tools for the job. It isn’t even close. Nintendo is often ingenious at designing games, and yet doesn’t understand how to deal with the people who play them.
If you’re still reading, thanks for making it this far. This comment has turned into a bit of a rant, but I feel that all this frustration is completely justified, for all the stuff that Nintendo has made the community go through over the past six years.

"just because of a lack of support on Nintendo's side".
this really reminds me of the adobe flash situation... the history of flash website had a little section where iconic flash game developers wrote a tiny postmortem of sort on adobe flash. and in many, many of them i saw them accusing adobe with its lack of support.
flash fell behind. mobile gaming, security flaws, flash games being super laggy and so, so many other things were on the rise and adobe flash refused to budge from it's seat. when they finally made their move, it was too little and too late.
it's so sad to see this struggle repeat again, with mario maker's community. a creative community put down because it's creators wouldn't do crap or even worked against them, squandering it's potential. super mario maker and adobe flash COULD have been so much more, but again, it's owners being lazy in supporting it or draconian with its community killed it.
i hope the popular mario maker creators are doing ok, just like how many people used adobe flash to jumpstart their careers... atleast we know ceave is doing well!

My mom got for me a few weeks after it came out thankfully, and I remember waking up in the morning and taking the game pad from the living room and secretly taking it to my room, or at least at the door of my room so it would still connect. I spent hours making one level I was super proud of. It doesn’t really hold up today but it’s still cool and pretty hard! The Wii U didn’t have online and my parents said they would do it when they had time ( years later, they still didn’t do it lol, but I’m getting Nintendo Online anyway. ) I have some super duper cool levels and I started watching CZcamsrs like you and BTG and the level I was talking about, I made them so that I could share the level with you guys for you to play. Half of my levels are from the first 2-3 years of getting the game, and the rest is after. And I wish I had the online so I could of shared the levels back then, oh well. 2. All the mechanics in mario are built to interact with one another.
As a game designer I used to think that mechanics are meant to be built one way and then have additional functionality layered on as needed. Going forward though I'm going to expairiment with this idea of making all my mechanics fit into an interconnected web right from the get go rather than updating them as my needs change. This could lead to some exciting new level concepts in my games!

Your first experience with Mario Maker sounds like learning programming feels.
When I was younger, I created games using Game Maker, and didn't know much about programming before. Since Game Maker was simple, I was still able to make a few small games with it.
But then I got a problem: I needed to link multiple objects to a single object, so that some object can communicate to some other objects in the same way without having to rewrite the script for every object.
When looking for a solution, I found out about arrays (I used them in the computer science class in school already), and this way, I did not only solve that problem, but many new ways to add interesting mechanics opened.

I have to say using stuff with limitations is incredibly fun.
I really like when normal games include a toolkit with a level creator, if there is a game out there with a included level creator and I own said game you can bet marios hat that I have atleast attempted to create a level for it. For example Company of Heroes and every Valve game come with a level creator and I love both of 'em.
I would even say using existing engines and games and creating levels for them through official editors and then finding out the limitations, working with them and working around them is sometimes a bit more fun than to build up a game from "scratch" using unity or unreal.
I go through phases where I like to make my own games "without limitations" and phases where I simply mod/create levels for existing games. Both are fun in their own ways.

For the Splatoon comparison as someone from the community, Splat 3 makes a ton of sense, but it does because the game has a lot of things to add that don't make sense for Splat 2 to have (new mechanics, diffrent types of specials, new story/location). Splatoon 2 got over a year and a half of constant updates, they streched out DLC for a long time before working on the 3rd game.
Mario maker is just diffrent to me due to being a level editor, and being able to last so much longer due to that factor, but it gets some of the least DLC support I've ever seen. I don't know why honestly.
Honestly they aren't even doing the Splatoon approach for Mario Maker, or it would be significantly more content for a lot longer, the decisions Nintendo made with SMM suck.

I feel like SMM2 had a chance to have the same level of shenanigans possible in SMM1, but Nintendo just patched out all of the glitches within a week of their discovery, forcing us to work within the arbitrary limitations set up by Nintendo. I mean within the first month of SMM2 we had teleporting tracked items, collisionless blocks, air that had collisions without a visible block, duplicating blocks, and flying chainchomps. All of those glitches were patched out within a month of their discovery, even though they had so much potential for amazing levels

I dunno if this is on topic, bur as a dungeon master who really enjoys expanding beyond the manuals and adding weird new enemies and mechanics, sometimes I forget that complexity isnt fun when it's just one item or ability with tons of line of text, but complexity is at its most fun and engaging when it's a lot of little simple things on their own but with intresting interactions.
For me it's always hard to balance between simple to understand but also complex enough that it has applications in lots of ways to make it actually useful, but this video is a great reminder on how to design fun system for players to interact with in a more open ended/sandbox style.

I remember playing the first game, and I made one course I was really proud of. It was pretty much just an enclosed arena with multiple vertical levels that players could fight Bowser on. The only way to take him out was with a decent amount of Fireballs, so I put Fire Flowers in a pipe for an infinite source. It was a battle of attrition where the player was supposed to slowly wear down Bowser while avoid getting hit, and if they got hit, retreat to heal up with a Fire Flower. Eventually, defeating Bowser dropped a door key which led to the end of the level. It was really fun, and I was super proud of it. After uploading it, I dropped the game to return to Smash Bros. When I came back a few months later...
THE COURSE WAS FUCKING BANNED FOR INTENTIONAL USE OF GLITCHES!!! The one stage I had poured time and love into had been taken down for glitches that I didn't even know were there, much less intentionally included. Nintendo's glitch policy is more terrible than removing really cool mechanics, it actually flagged the only level I was seriously proud of as false positive. This game got done dirty.

I can’t believe I never realized this before. I love writing poetry, but now that I’ve graduated I find myself having a huge amount of writers block. Why is that? I’ve gotten so much better at it. It exactly as you say. Limitation boost creativity. Over 80% of my poems were written about a specific topic that my school told me to write it about. That’s what made it so much easier and more enjoyable. I had to work with what I had. Now that makes wonder, is that part of the reason why several oppressed or poor countries have so much more happiness overall? It’s just true, ask any escaped North Korean. Even though it’s not hard to see that the outside world is so much better, people under the strict government limitations are far more content with what they do have.
