  • The Super Mario series is a phenomenon. 6 out of the 50 best selling games of all times are 2D Super Mario games, the Super Mario franchise is the most successful video game franchise of all time, Super Mario is unbelievably successful. But why? Honestly, why is the super mario franchise so popular? At first glance Super Mario isn’t the coolest thing imaginable. At its core it’s a series about an italian plumber whos crush happens to be a princess, that gets kidnapped by a gigantic turtle a lot. In this video, we are going to take a look at the first level of each 2D Super Mario game as a stand in for the whole game, we will first take a look back at over three decades of Super Mario history and afterwards we will try to find an answer to the question how nintendo managed to keep the mario games interesting over such a long time.

A little annoyed how you glossed over all the additions to New Super Mario Bros. except the Mega Mushroom.
    - Each level includes three Star Coins that must be collected for 100% Completion. No Mario game had this beforehand but they became a standard for the franchise even in the 3D installments moving forward.
    - Yoshi from this game onwards has his Flutter Jump first introduced in Yoshi's Island.
    - A large number of elements from Super Mario 64 are brought over. The 8 red coins, Ground Pounding, Wall Jumping, and the Triple Jump all make their 2D debut here. Yes, I know Red Coins and Ground Pounds were introduced in Yoshi's Island, but Mario first used them in Mario 64. Furthermore, Mario's physics in these games are based on the 3D titles, which is a significant difference from World.

It's sort of like Mega Man, really. Mega Man 1 established the series, Mega Man 2 refined the core gameplay, Mega Man 3 and 4 added a few new moves to his arsenal. After that, the series really didn't know what to with itself (7 and 8 gave graphical upgrades but didn't change much, and 9 went retro). The result is a whole lot of games that are definitely good, but most of them don't really have a reason to exist besides "boy, it would be nice to have another Mega Man game this year." That's the real reason they added the gear system in 11 - they didn't want the game to be just a level pack.

Like you shortly mentioned there is a genius reason, why there is the Gomba Question Block Setup! The Player sees the Question Block, about, what he knows is already a good think, so that he is let to jump against it! With that you jump on the head of the Gomba, and you realise that they are the enemy's and that you need to jump on their head to beat them! But now,as a developer, you got the problem that the power Up also is a mushroom so that the player thinks he needs to douche it to! But because of the blocks setup after the Question Block Gomba Setup, you catch the power mushroom when you run forward in a normal speed, even if you try to douge it! And so you automatically collect that power Up and realise that it is something good! And that's why this setup(especially the one in the first game, because of the block setup after the Gumbo Question Block Setup!) is really genius!

Before it, I had only played SMB3 and it really frustrated me that you had to reset everything if you lost all your lives (which wasn’t too hard to do, esp without the checkpoints). SMBWii removed all those problems and I ended up finishing the game several times. While I haven’t ventured off to play any other games, I’ve watched many videos on the different games (particularly SMM), and if I were to encounter one of the other games I wouldn’t be so averse to playing it. So yeah, definitely special to me as well :p

2D Mario is one of the few Nintendo franchises that never lost the secret to mass appeal gaming: Simple inputs that leads to interesting and/or complex outputs. Most of gaming has followed the path of trying to please the hardcore gamer, who is especially prone to confusing complexity for depth. If they have to press 12 buttons to accomplish a task, it seems to us/them like they're getting "more" game. In reality, their substantive input is virtually the same. A modern hardcore game might seem to have more meat on its bones, because instead of having to just jump on a goomba's head, first you need to open your map, track down an enemy, pull open your inventory, select the right equipment, then go press, O, X, X, TRIANGLE, O at it, but after the first two or three times of this, it ceases to be any more engaging than a Goomba stomp and becomes exactly as repetitive. In short, most gaming choices are horribly weighted down with incredible amounts of bloat, which do nothing to change the core interaction between the player and the game. Hardcore gamers may put up with this, but people who don't put up 200 hours on a video game with regularity naturally feel like it's a complicated waste of time. Please note that I'm not criticizing hardcore gamers for this. I'm exactly the same way. I'll pile up expansion pack after expansion pack on a board game that in no way significantly alters its core decisionmaking, but it does make the game take an extra 2 hours to play.
2D Mario follows a small number of hard rules which are intuitive and consistent. It takes about a minute and a half to know everything you need to in order to play the game. Just by looking at the screen you have a rough idea of what's happening, and what causes success and failure even if you've never touched a controller before. Further, it's broken up into small, bitesize chunks, so almost anyone no matter how busy can fit in some play. It may not be gaming's absolutely most pure form, but it's pretty close.

Great video as always! I think nostalgia is the big part of the puzzle you're missing here. the release of Mario 1 through World lines up with when so many of us were kids, growing up and falling in love with video games for the first time. The 14 year gap lines up with a lot of us growing up, and then the Wii Mario games line up with a lot of the same people who grew up loving mario as kids having kids of their own. Think about the multi-player capabilities of the Wii mario games. They are completey perfect for the kid who grew up in the 80s to take his now 6 year old son and teach him to fall in love with gaming, while walking alongside him in Mario games.

The only thing about Super Mario Run that I object to is its price: it feels like it's more expensive than it's worth, to me.
I bought it one of the times it went on sale, and I actually *have* had quite a bit of fun playing it - even if I've only ever done so just to kill time while I'm waiting for something/someone. :)
And I have to say: having played a few OTHER games on a smart device and being able to use only the touch screen… Super Mario Run controls a lot better than, say, Fairune does - because in Super Mario Run's case, the screen IS the button… rather than being a place that has "buttons" that you touch for moving and actions and such. :)

About the games themselves, I think SMB1 is better than Lost Levels and Super Mario Land. I may even state that is better than NSMB series because NSMB series rehashes everything (the gameplay, the esthetics, the style) so nothing really stands out and SMB1 was fresh and surreal. I don't blame anybody from preferring NSMB, looking back SMB1 no longer feels fresh and surreal, but I really don't imagine anyone preferring Super Mario Land 1 or Lost Levels over SMB1

Childhood memories of playing a favorite game are so interesting...to this day there are certain smells that I strongly associate with certain video games.

Hot inside of the charging port of a wireless Xbox 360 controller smell = TES 4 Oblivion
Hot dust/asphalt = Super Mario World

Not to mention the new modes, nabbit and whatnot. Why are you ignoring literally everything that isn't a level?
Also you really underestimated Mario world. It's not just similar to 3 and 1. It brought so many new mechanics and yoshi.. YOSHI!! And the mechanics are just man... The branching paths the star road levels. They are unique and they weren't just similar games.. They did a lot new that you're looking over.

Actually I prefer Wii. It seems much more structured and actually feeps like a journey/adventure. The open world map in NSMBU makes everything look bland and just feels like a selection of levels.
I really really love NSLU though, that one is actually probably even better than NSMBW.

The fact that they didn't even compose new music for most of the levels speaks volumes about how it is mostly recycled. I still think it's pretty good out of context.

the reason for the grid like structure is sprites where only so big and most things where either one or a group of sprites, and sprites are all the same size squares, so it forms a gridlike structure
