I'll never tire of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes series of movies. I'd rather watch these over and over, instead of watching today's movies.
Yeah that's pretty much what I've been doing the past two weeks or so,lol. I dunno what it is. Even the later adaptations of Sherlock,I don't enjoy as much.
I agree though my problem is Nigel Bruce's Watson is a bumbling old fool; he is nothing like the Dr. Watson described in Doyle's stories.
Elementary my dear.................!
Same here. I remember in the '50s the TV version was on in the morning with Ronald Howard. He was good but those episodes were a 1/2 hour, not near long enough to make it really good. Picked up a few of those episodes some years ago.
Same!..the mysteries are so intriguing, and they are short..only an hour plus long..great entertainment!
Basil Rathbone’s physicality is perfect for Holmes : Tall, thin, narrow face, high forehead & Grecian nose + deep, highly cultured voice…..PERFECT.
It’s a shame he never played Dracula he had the perfect face for horror of any kind
"Watson, if you ever think of taking up another profession...never even think of becoming an actor!" Great ending line!

Which is a profound compliment to Nigel Bruce, the actor with the hard job of acting like a bad actor!
What got me was they all took such care in giving them silent clues at the beginning and Watson just blurting it out loud as can be before leaving the restaurant.
Watson's a dope, and surprisingly enough, hasn't killed anyone, being a doctor.
Sherlock Holmes creators produced a most wonderful series.
Mr. Rathbone will not ever be usurped as the quintessential 'Holmes'.
Jeremy Brett is / was a very creditable runner-up for me...
@@theclashcalling_ Jeremy Brett was better, much as I love Rathbone's rendition.
Not usurped....but there certainly is an equal.... Jeremy Brett
My favorite Sherlock was Ronald Howard in the TV series from the 50's.
There was never a bad Basil Rathbone As Sherlock Holmes part... the movies may be dated but he and Nigel Bruce always perfect in their roles. Worth watching.
They do seem a bit dated all 13 film's are worn thin nowaday's,but what I do is put the video on and put headphones on and just listen to it as just an Audio drama which gives a whole new dimension as you notice more in the back ground than you ever have and appreciate the act skill's of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce evenmore as with no picture's the connection as they go through the script is so smoothly play seem less, gentlemen to the end...

HE is Sherlock Holmes...!!!
If these movies were remade today, I don't think they could find a duo who would compliment each other as these two great actors.
Not even Batman and Robin 🕵️
Basil Rathbones acting is hypnotic and flawless
he was a great bloke as well... he and his wife loved to throw lavish parties....think he packed plenty into his life
Don’t miss Rathbone as the tormented wing commander in Dawn Patrol-he was never better. One Errol Flynn’s best performances in the bargain.
And, surprisingly, Nigel Bruce had a very nice singing voice. 👌
He had great timing in ALL of his Movies 🎥

Greed, it seems, will always be a powerful motive I'm afraid.
Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Holmes to a T.. He may not know how much we have all learnt from him on so many levels including the lesson on everyday small stuff that appears unimportant. Yet is vital in polite communication with others. I watch them over and over. The best duo ever including all staff who worked behind the scenes. 👏❤️✨✨
Basil rathbone and nigel bruce are the perfect holmes and watson, and the scripts are faboulous, you would like to see these movies in winter, but 14 movies are far less than sufficient
Basil and Nigel are by far the best Holmes and Watson. I have watched these films countless times and enjoy them more than any other incarnation of the famous duo.
Basil Rathbone has always been my favorite Sherlock Holmes.
The ONLY Sherlock Holmes, in my very experienced, opinion. Ditto for Bruce's, Watson.

The very last lines by Rathbone and Bruce are priceless and humorous, like a cherry atop a delicious cake.

I love the fact that Holmes and Watson go on holidays together. So cute!
Maybe as the last line from holmes in the hound of the baskervilles . Watson the needle... is possibly why they go on holiday together

Who doesn't love shipboard mysteries? These, and train mysteries are top of my list!
Ah, you love the whodunits in confined spaces. Also a sequestered mansion, perhaps.
Perktube1 And then there were none.
There's a few from this era set partially or mostly on airplanes as well. Very similar feel to them, and a fascinating look at what air travel used to be like. None of the cramped cattle cars today's planes have become - but also many times the relative cost and far slower than a modern jet.
Terror by Night is another fantastic Rathbone Holmes set entirely on a train, and considerably better than this one.
@@ghostlightx9005 Don't agree. Watson didn't recognize his own friend? Everyone was doing math to relax? No. Pursuit was/is a masterpiece of masterpieces. It is the creme de la creme. The cream of the crop. And when Nigel Bruce is singing? Need I say more?
Dr. Watson singing Loch Lomond is a treasure with beautiful Marjorie Riordan at the piano. At 51.20 min.
Nigel Bruce’s brogue is wonderful.

Absolutely love these films. Basil is Sherlock to me, no one else can compare.
The first wave of "Lord of the Rings" mania was around 1969. I was in high school. Friends were writing in runes, and I sang my own tunes with guitar to the songs.Basil Rathbone was so strongly my image for Aragorn, I never have been able to get into the whole film series with Viggo Mortensen as substitute. I assume he was great. Oh, well.
Big snow storm on its way, and I'm so ready for some Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie movies..with the fuzzy blanket and hot cocoa. And a lil dab of Irish cream.
I love Sherlock Holmes! All the movies, etc. I can watch over again! Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are classic actors!!

I have the whole collection of conan Doyle.,Sherlock Holmes inclusive ❤❤❤
This story was not in Arthur Conan Doyle's original collection. This was more of an adoption?
The Actress playing the singer is so lovely and natural.
Marjorie Riordan is her name.

Nigel Bruce served as dunderheaded buffoon to Holmes manic-genius - good detective/bad detective.
Tqyq
I love these movies of holmes and watson, my favorites, such a classy time. So much respect and innocence.
"... to make yourself as conspicuous as possible." Piece a cake for Watson.
I agree that Basil Rathbone was the ultimate Sherlock Holmes. He looks exactly as I had pictured Holmes when I read the stories as a child. I appreciate Jeremy Brett’s performance and the absolute dedication that production had to Conan Doyle’s stories. But even though some of these movie plots are a bit hokey I never tire of them. I like how Rathbone looks as Holmes. His profile and build are perfect and those languid eyes when he plays the violin. Which he really could and did play. His every gesture and glance is Holmes. Which Jeremy Brett, God love him, over acted at times, and got shrill. Holmes was never shrill. I also, like many others love Rathbone and Bruce together, they seem to have a natural affection for each other or are just great actors. Yes Nigel Bruce plays Watson as a bungler, which he never was in the stories, but some how it works and I love it. Benedict Cumberbatch is a good actor, but that series lost sight of the feel of Holmes, even though they actually stole some bits of their absurd plots from these movies. I have the complete set of these movies and watch them again every few years or so and never tire of them I too grew up watching them in the 60s with my Dad when I was a teenager and I still love them. I even got my daughter addicted to Sherlock Holmes, although to her Jeremy Brett is the ultimate Holmes.
Here I go again. I'll watch this for the 20th time (at least) if for no ther reason than to hear Nigel Bruce sing Loch Lomond. The problem is that, after watching it, every time I see a menu for the next month I'll wind up traipsing up and down dark alleys trying to get to a meeting with a foreign ambassador.
You as well

Nigel Brice as Dr. Watson at his best. What a wonderful movie. Now a days, I do not go to movie theaters and spend $17 to watch a movie at the mall ... These classic are simply superb to watch. Basic Rathbone is SherlockHolmes personified.
Nigel Bruce is my favorite of the duo. He plays the fool brilliantly and he certainly was anything but. He could have been a model when he was young. He got machine gunned in the legs when in the trenches of WW1 and even after being medically discharged due to his wounds he reenlisted as a trainer for the rest of the war. Some people have incredibly colorful lives his was certainly one of them.
" Green was never a becoming colour for the old trout " classic Holmes 👌
Quite a lovely girl playing Sheila, also something of a rocket scientist: Marjorie Riordan was "discovered" in Wisconsin in the early 1940s and became a studio contract player at Warner Brothers. During the 1950s she and another Warner Brothers player, Joyce Reynolds, decided that they found acting intellectually unsatisfying and the two of them returned to graduate school to study speech pathology.
Riordan's focus in graduate school was the psycho-dynamics of stuttering which led her, in turn, to study clinical psychology. Throughout the late fifties and first couple of years of the sixties, she pursued both her careers as a clinical psychologist and as an actress, but then gave up acting altogether.
While in graduate school, she met her husband Allan Schlaff, who was also a clinical psychologist. The two had a son, John Schlaff, who was born in 1959.
Riordan succumbed to breast cancer in 1984.
What a wonderful post! That lady did all she did in a age now accused of holding women back. So many of that generation accomplished feats that made America successful .
@@colinhalliley111 But not with the fame the men got, nor the money. The 1940s were the golden years for American women with the men at war.
I just saw Marjorie Riordan in "Stage Door Canteen." She was radiant in that picture, though this one gives her a better role, and a singing one at that. Her relatively short career in films was Hollywood's loss, but clinical psychology's gain.
The name sounds German? Was he one of the many Nazi rocket scientists who were taken back to the USA..?
That’s a direct copy/paste from her IMDB page.
I wish they would write plots like this. Now a days just blood and curse words.
And they don't have an original thought between them.
They were written for an audience that had an average IQ 23+ points lower than today and never came close to even finishing secondary school. It shows. Badly.
oh phooey! There's loads of great stuff out there today - the standard is much much higher than it was in the 1940s
Dude, idk what you're watching but there are tons of great stuff without "blood and curse words", including Sherlock BBC
Everything out of Hollywood is left wing trash. The movie industry is in the gutter
Better than anything on TV today. The only detective series in recent history do I love as much as Holmes is Wallander. Foyle's War was great, too. But Sherlock remains king. Chan not too far behind. (Nicer guy, too! lol)
I agree I love the Basil Rathbone Holmes and Sidney Toler Chan series. Can watch and re-watch endlessly. They're only about an hour or so long so not a big time commitment. Some of the same actors seem to appear in both. Reminds me of the Maltese Falcon or Big Sleep Bogart movies. Good fun entertainment.
Well said.

We remember only the actor Basil Rathbone, and the supporting actor, Dr. Watson, however, there were many people, the production crew, the writers, the director, and a whole team of characters that make up a treasure trove of stimulation we enjoy as viewers.
Right you are. They were all excellent actors without whom this series would not have been so popular as is.
Basil Rathbone as Holmes makes me very happy.😊 Thank you.❤️
Love watching him, he was good in robin hood too as the bad guy
Monica Gomez I think Basil starred with Errol Flynn in Captain Blood too. I remember two pirate captains doing their Swashbuckling routine in a beach on an Island. Basil was the real deal fencer from his youth days in the British Army apparently. Every Saturday afternoon without fail I used to watch the reruns of this series with a beer and Cornish pasty. Girlfriend wanted to go shopping. Fine see you later then.. lmao
He is the best ever.

Gina Monroe absolutely
Along with everything else with the Basil/Nigel Holmes movies I've always enjoyed the great tidbits of humor. Bruce was always the perfect foil to Rathbone. "... never even think of becoming an actor"

Oh and "Don't even THINK of becoming an actor!" omg i am die lol
I fell in love with these movies as a young teen over 50 years ago and they never got old. My favorite actors in these parts. I read that once Basil Rathbone informed the movie studio he would no longer make these movies, he received tons of hate mail from his fans and the general public outraged that he quit. They wanted more! Wish they made a few more.
Out of all the moments from the history of Sherlock, nothing gets me like a compliment from Holmes to Watson. Especially in the Rathbone series. He's so short tempered and condescending to him any other time. Bossy. The few times he compliments him or makes it obvious he cares has stuck with me more than almost anything. Him saying the guy that helped saved Watson deserved the reward at the end of In the House of Fear is the best example. And then the compliment here where you get the little giggle from Watson.
Holmes can't stand near anyone. But he spends hours upon hours with Watson. You know he has to care,it's just really something when you see it. I've felt that way about many different Holmes and Watson duos honestly. I would say this is my least favorite Watson,if he wasn't so charming. He works so well playing off him,the stupidity comes off as endearing. And he has his moments where it's plain he's not a punk or an idiot either. This man is a wounded veteran and a doctor. I never understood why so many played him the way they did. This would be a highly educated man. He wouldn't have the deduction skills of Holmes, because they are unrealistic to begin with...but he wouldn't be an outright cartoon either.
I do enjoy when they get close to the books but make something a bit different. The Sherlock series and some of the games, the Jeremy Brett series, etc. They are such good characters they can be interpreted a number of ways and still be instantly recognizable. They've made him everything from a complete leech and a drug addict,to kinder than Sir Arthur could have ever wanted. And a lot of it is right there in the material. Just depends on the person who sees it.
I was happy to look through the comments and see other big fans. Especially when they are younger or older. I like seeing the ones that say they saw them when they were little, and the ones that said their grandparents just made them watch them or whatever else. Not only Holmes, but the actors and ACD himself are immortal. It's crazy when you think about it. He created a character (really I should say characters) that is still loved like 125 years later. There's not many people or companies that can say that besides Disney/Marvel...and even that's not as old. I always wonder what these creators would think. Conan Doyle and Tom Clancy are ones I wonder about all the time. I always hope they would be proud, but one has to wonder.
Nigel Bruce had a magnificent singing voice!
Loved this one. Watson’s solo was fantastic especially.

That was not Doctor Watson's (Nigel Bruce) voice you heard, but a voice over by another singer. Common practice in the movie industry when the actual actor had no musical/singing talent.

I love listening to Basil speaking in his flawless and gramatically correct Queen's English. To hear how "English" is spoken now is very sad...sloppy and incorrect and careless. This Shakespearean actor was so brilliant in everything he did. I think Americans in particular love this series because it shows the world as it was, with its history, culture and a sense of right and wrong. America has been sliced and diced and history rewritten. We are now just a bunch of savages so we long to watch these old movies to take us back to the world when it was normal..a world gone away..but we still have these great Sherlock Holmes films.
The world in the 1940's was not normal though. But yeah Basil's way of speaking is flawless
The world for us here in the USA worked. Everything was orderly. Now we have some world leaders working overtime to create their "order out of chaos" new world order. Take me back to those days. I was just a baby in the late forties but growing up then through the mid sixties was the best any human could hope for. The word NORMAL will never be again. Nothing is normal now.
Couldn't agree more - The Founders' vision for America has been perverted so as to be unrecognizable by the insatiable greed, power lust and unconscionable forever wars of which Holmes despaired.
2024, well spoken and yes love the clear English being spoken.

I’ve really enjoyed other portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, especially those by Jeremy Brett and Benedict Cumberbatch but the one I find totally believable, is Basil Rathbone’s. It’s great to be able to watch these films. Thank you !
i agree, but i very much enjoyed Mr.Cumberbatch
oops Cumberbach
It's the profile, prominent men have prominent noses.
I like Cumberbatch as an actor, and he fit the part well. But the shows, past the first season got violent and unpleasant. As for Robert Downey's Sherlock, it had nothing to do with Conan Doyle's stories. Basically a vulgar martial arts movie aimed at a Chinese audience. Rathbone's Sherlock fits the stories better than anyone else. He was perfect for the role.
@@steveneardley7541 I absolutely agree with all of that.
Cant remember the last time I sat at a dinner table like that. miss the whole idea, maybe someday.
I think the person that is playing Holmes on here is Handsom
I never tire from the Rathbone-Bruce series. I laugh at the same places each time!
