But I am so very proud to have policed London, I walked around in the fog at Big Ben,remembering this film, and serving her majesty the Princess of Wales,who I can call a dear friend , these films inspired me to have this great life, ty
Perfect for a rainy Sunday. Me and my mum used to watch a black n white double bill on a Saturday when Dad was at cricket we would get a lovely cake from the bakery near us put our feet up with a cup of tea they don’t put the good old black n white on anymore very sad was the only mum daughter time we had 🥰

Rathbone was also the finest fencer in Hollywood. His duel with Tyrone Power in Zorro is the best example of movie swordsmanship in history. Even the recent Lightsaber duels in Star Wars can compete.
Having an amazing voice was characteristic of British actors of that day (and to some degree of today).

I’ve been watching these flicks since I was a young lad! I would stay up late to see them on Saturday night. They began at 11 or 12 o’clock. I was about 12yrs old and I am 63 yrs now. It’s been about 50yrs of catching them whenever see them listed in the guides. I never miss them. Basil IS Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce is the quintessential John Watson. These films are Art!

The modern movies with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law are brilliant and I own both on disc. That said, Basil and Nigel were a spectacular pairing. Born for the roles they were. AND... Basil was perfect in the original A Tale of Two Cities, with Ronald Coleman, one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I own it in disc, as well. G’day from Georgia USA 🇺🇸

He is always over the top as if he is stage acting . I fear his time is past and it’s too late to recover his mojo. Too much life wasted in dissipation and sin and pleasure seeking! anyone remember the double bill films on every Saturday back in the 70,s? it was only on Friday & Saturday we were allowed to stay up late. just 1 tele in the house that the whole family sat round to watch, them were the days!!

Turned this on for "something in the background" while I work, but was absolutely sucked in. The characters, acting, dialogue and mystery totally absorbed me. An excellent movie that certainly kept me on the edge of my seat as I'm sure it did for audiences in 1939. Amazing how timeless this turned out to be!

Its true...one of the things I hate about movies now is that:
There is no suspense
All blood and guts and body parts instead of a good horror story.
Halloween scary as Fk cause you never saw his face and didn't know he was killing.
The Fog
You didn't know why they were killing were they were and the sinth music building you up..
They need to bring back real suspense and a good story.
And the THING..
It scared because you didn't know who to trust, who it was, what it was and that it would escape into the real word..
I suggest the 1959 remake as well if you want something to compare and contrast
I have them all 14 on CD and watch them regularly.......but only with Rathbone and Green the others are very disappointing....
I am 67 now and since I can remember, this is one of my favorites and Basil Rathbone along with Nigel Bruce are Sherlock and Watson no doubt.
"Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound". How does that line not grab your attention? It just lands so well in all versions of the Hound of the Baskervilles
And that last line, tho', "Oh, Watson, the needle." LOL
I'm always struck by how timeless these classics are . They haven't lost any of their charm during the passage of time - as crisp and taut as ever . Rathbone and Bruce are food for the soul .

this is the only one where bruce wasn't a complete buffoon the entire time though there were those moments. i hated the way they either wrote watson or the way he portrayed him bcz there is no way a man that utterly stupid could have become a dr even back then!

Basil Rathbone is the best, these movies bring back such great memories, of me sitting on the floor with my Grandmother, while she drank her tea at the table, as we both were in absolute suspense as we watched these great black & white classics. Priceless times.

Totally agree you can't beat the old classics.
They films are true classics, with all of the cleverness and imaginative set design that colour made infinitely more difficult.
But some of the dialogues is pretty terrible, and a lot of what Holmes 'deduces' off the cuff is just bollocks. Watson is also often presented as inept and stupid; almost a stooge. And the Holmes-in-disguise trope was never much of a fooler.
Then there'd be stuff like this...

@@ginskimpivot753 Some of the sets are a bit off. Clearly so many of the "London" or "British" locations are dressed with American objects and decor. And the most famous one in this film, where the train is crossing Dartmoor, the back projection is that of Kansas or some such mid western farmland.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the gift of 19th century. Sir Basil Rathbone and Bruce Nigel the fantastic actors have commemorated these films through their acting skills. Don't believe these movies are 80 years old still gives pleasure and excitement to watch again and again. Thanks to all those who have taken efforts in uploading this golden era of cinema.

Whether Basil Rathbone was knighted or not is irrelevant. The fact remains that these films are gems. The acting is simple splendid. Such a breath of fresh air.
I like them too. Rathbone is excellent as Holmes(so is Jeremy Brett in other movies). But I HATE the portrayal of Watson as a bumbling idiot. From the original stories Dr. Watson was an intelligent and very capable ally of Holmes. Certainly he didn't possess Holmes' incite into crime solving. But in the books, NO ONE did. That's what made Holmes special. But Watson was No Bumbling idiot like the Rathbone movies portray him as !

Rathbone & Bruce are clearly the definitive form of Holmes & Watson. No one before or since compares to their portrayal.
I find Jeremy Brett to be comparable as Sherlock Holmes and Edward Hardwicke to be a better Watson. All of them are Sherlockian! The modern Iron Man dude is definitely NOT SHERLOCK HOLMES. He is some flipping super-hero modern freak. Those movies and all the other modern attempts at Holmes are hoaxes!!

Rathbone and Martin Freeman would be the perfect duo in my opinion
Arthur Wontner and Ian Fleming are also great as Holmes and Watson.
There's just so much going for this series---Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the definitive champion duo; the plots are great and never wear out; the music is great and the ambience are unmatched; Black & White is the ONLY medium befitting this Victorian era drama; costumes, witty dialog and minimum violence; no foul brutish language, nor cheap sexual innuendos. Excellent camera work and choice of poses/facial expressions. No wonder I have watched each episode dozens of times---the dramatic effect always gets the endorphins pumping.
All this makes for repetitive viewing that never gets old---like listening to 50's/60's/70's R&B, jazz music of the bebop. "cool", and CTI-production eras.
That is a brilliantly described review of this classic. The quality of films, TV and music from the yesteryear era are unmatched by comparison to what passes for entertainment today and over the past few decades. I am so glad that we have access to them. Thanks for sharing your insight!

I first read those words when I was 11 years old - needless to say that I did not set the book down until the finish.
You take me back into the world when you were a child, I too loved reading Sherlock Holmes stores though I started much later.

Movies back in the day certainly had more 'atmosphere' than movies do today.
Tighter framing in black and white always adds atmosphere, especially with fraught music. Its great, really.
They certainly did. About 80% of entertainment today is complete crap, and the other 20% is passably good at best. It's sad, really.
And they had more acting. These days it's all CGI and super fast cuts btween scenes.

This is the best film version of the book. I was 13 when I read it. I read the whole day, and when my mother made me turn off the light at 10PM, I continued reading with a flashlight under my blanket all night long and finished it. The next day was a school day, but I just couldn't put the book down. When I saw this very movie some time later, Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone was exactly how I imagined him reading that book.

I listened to some of the Radio shows on a small transistor Radio with an earphone, those balmy summer moonlit nights.
Have loved these movies for 60 yrs now , give or take a few . Never get tired of Basil . The best .

What a fantastic classic movie.
Hands down my favorite version of Hound. Rathbone is perfection as Holmes. Nigel Bruce is less bumbling than usual and more the solid figure he is in the stories. Throw in great character actors like Lionel Atwill and John Carradine-- it doesn't get much better than that.
I like this one too. The 1959 version is too melodramatic, goes too far away from the novel. The 2002 tv version is quite good but gets Holmes and Watson wrong too much action and horror, too little thinking and investigation.
The 1988 version is the best for me, it gets even minor details of the book right like including Laura and her father, casting Dr Mortimer as a young man and having miss Stapleton played by an actress who looks like she could be both English yet her dark hair and eyes looks like she could have some Spanish blood, it also includes the scene of her beaten up at the end. The 2002 version goes further and even has her murdered. To make this work you need a really good Stapleton, Holmes and Watson of course you must get right a good Sir Henry helps and it needs a scary gloomy feel at times on the Moor.
Basil and Atwill were together in Son of Frankenstein as well!

When I was in my 9th grade my english teacher made me pick from a pile of books to read for the holidays and I picked this one. It was such an honor to narate the story after the break infront of my classmates.
Of all the Sherlock movies this is my favorite and Basil made the best Holmes
The sets for the outdoors and the nighttime lighting was flawless.
It's been sixty years since I saw this movie as a kid... I never forgot it. Sherlock was the Man he had a brain like a main frame computer and always got his man.

Reading the different comments, it's comforting to know that there are many of us still who are capable of enjoying and appreciating these films. Of course it always amazes me that they were able to get away with the very last line of "oh Watson, the needle!"

Love all the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies. These were made during WW2 and no doubt gave thousands of people a chance to escape the horrors of war and worrying about the future. You noticed in this movie Watson was more serious and competent than in the later movies.
Love these films. Rathbone and Bruce were best buddies 25 years. It shows. Wonderful.

This is just one of the great classics in style, cinematography, set design, acting and directing..."the Grimpen Mire," Baskerville Hall, the forbidding moor...a great literary work realized wonderfully by the "Greatest Generation"
In his book Conan Doyle called this place "Grimpen Mire: Doyle was in fact writing about a real place called Foxtor Mires on Dartmoor which he had visited - he just changed its name. "

I'm always amazed at how well the dog/dogs were trained in this film. Those are some intense action scenes and stunts at the end, and they are believable even all these decades later. Hope they got lots of treats
I'm more curious about the dog they used to record the audio. If you mute the movie, you can easily imagine the dog just being uber playful. But the snarling had to come from somewhere!
To get any dog to bark is easy, it’s keeping them quiet is the biggest problem, no matter the breed or how well trained
Except for one thing that kind of takes away from the believability of the ferocious dog- it's violently wagging tail! No matter how good the dog was you just can't keep them from wagging their tail! It was the same thing when they filmed Cujo. Turn the volume off and you have one very happy dog wrestling around!

….It’s the only part of this film that makes me intensely upset….You cannot “train” a dog to foam at the mouth like that & show that degree of viciousness (I’m referring to the scenes not involving an actor. They used trained dogs for the scenes with actors) ….I’m afraid they very badly mistreated those dogs-breeding them for viciousness (as many hideous dog fighting rings do today)….Then, they shot them full of Amphetamines/adrenaline to provoke the over-the-top drooling, foaming behavior….
Unfortunately, there were no laws against animal cruelty on the books at the time-and studios were some of the greatest offenders….(It literally took the rare intervention of actors like Jimmy Stuart & Doris Day to insist animals used in their films were treated humanely)…

I enjoy B.Rathbone s portrayal of S Holmes the best , he is most distinguished not overdone like some others , i also appreciate the feel of the films created in the 40s which appear to add a certain mystery feel.
so this book by Conan Doyal we had/made (not even sure if I read the whole thing) to read in 6th or 7th grade by this weirdo teacher, a liberal I later realized named Mr. Zito. I cannot rem one thing as this film starts. Did I even read the book>>? Perhaps it will come back to me. Rather forget that year anyway hated my teachers and hated school.

The classics have such a charm about them, they may not have the fancy schmancy effects, but these movies are so much more intriguing and cosy to watch. Basil is a fantastic Sherlock 🕵♂

I was very young when I saw this movie. SO young, it terrified me and caused regular nightmares for years. It wasnt until I read the book as an adult, and learned the ending, that the nightmares stopped. Lol. Going to watch it to the end tonight...
I love how so many shots are directly based on the original illustrations. Beautiful cinematography and art direction.
Two of the supporting cast include character actor John Carradine and the handsome Richard Greene, he of Robin Hood (television version) and Forever Amber fame. They demonstrate the depth of the cast and help explain why this version has long remained a favorite. It also doesn't hurt that the script doesn't wander too far from the book and the Dartmoor atmosphere is terrific, considering the time it was made.

While rummaging through youtube,I accidentally came across these timeless classics of Sherlock Holmes&Dr.Watson.These black&white films do actually enhance the aura of mystery&thrill that surrounds any Holmes story.Yeah,for me Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the best actors ever,to have played the roles of the Holmes&Watson respectively.

Rathbone had a great voice and its worth watching these pictures just to hear his authoritative delivery, just as you could sit through any rubbish that James Mason had to perform in.
I enjoy James Mason wherever I find him.
I particularly enjoyed '5 Fingers', although others may disagree.
As a servant, Mason is more cultured and well mannered than any of his public school employers.
James mason was a good Watson to Christopher Plummers Holmes in the very dark movie Murder By Decree.
Mason had such a great voice! I loved him as Norman Maine in A Star Is Born, and in North By Northwest and Lord Jim!
I have been rotating through the 14 movies with basil and Nigel for the last few months. I watch them over and over again. My ex-wife could only watch a movie one time she refused to watch a movie the second time. I feel sorry for people who think that way. I was born during the million dollar movie you were in New York City where they showed the same film for an entire week twice every night and three times each day on weekends. That was on channel 9 in New York City.
My mom was responsible for my interest in these films. She loved them! Rathbone and Bruce are the ONLY Homes and Watson in my book. They were born to play those roles. Times classics. I love the proper English always used. I can watch these over and over again.
My mother and I watched these together, too. She’s been gone almost thirty years ago and I still remember and enjoy these films in her memory.
Wonderful. The style of acting is superb. No-one is thinking about their ego. The result is a great focus on the plot and character. Visually a treat. There are brilliant actors now, but these actors, bred on stage, bring a completely different and utterly gripping dynamic to the film.
One of those films that would not have the same impact if filmed in colour! Thank you for making this available

Back in the day, when I watched great classic movies on colour television, I oftentimes turned the colour knob down and watched in B&W for a nostalgic effect.
I've been watching these basil rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies for over 53 years I'm 67 now and I still enjoy them.
I have a friend whose wife and her siblings as kids always called the actor who portrayed Holmes in this “Razzle Bathbone.” When they grew up and realized their mistake, they continued to call him that since by then they preferred it.

I think around a dozen Sherlock movies were made between 39 and '48. You'd almost forgot that even during war time movies were being made. Making some of the movies following this one even more an accomplishment. This one though, probably being the best one.
Can you imagine the atmosphere and the quality of this classic had it been made in color ? A great deal of cinematic magic would be irretrievably lost, along with it's time, place, and historical ambience.

My favourite part was when Holmes disguised himself as an old gypsy & when he hoodwinked Nigel Bruce & suddenly stood up to his proper height & said "in that case I must be Watson"! Aside from that Basil Rathbone is my best Sherlock Holmes due to his total charisma in that role! A legend!

Basel rathbone is one fine actor as is Bruce. Together they make Sherlock Holmes fabulous. Both are very entelagent in their own way. Love this movie it's one of my favorites. Sherlock always gets the vilen in the he end. That hound scared me as a child still spooks me now that I am older. Love these old movies they keep you watching.
I have the collection of these Rathbone and Bruce films on DVD and never get tired of watching them. Brilliant.

In the time of "CORONAVIRUS WORLD WAR - 3" in 2020 when your own life is at the hands of a invisible pandemic it's cinema that breaks all barriers and provides solace and entertainment.As a lifelong fan of "SHERLOCK HOLMES" having even visited the "Sherlock Holmes" museum at Baker Street in London it's a pleasure watching the short black and white vintage films .Have seen "The Hound of Baskervilles" numerous times as well as a performance on stage.This is the first time seeing this film in black and white .Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. John Watson have set the method of acting for future generation of actors playing the role.Over the decades "SHERLOCK HOLMES" has been played by numerous actors but my personal feeling is that Basil.Rathbone with his impeccable British English was the best actor to have played "SHERLOCK HOLMES".Now who was the best actor to have played "007 James Bond" over the decades ! Ahoy !

To this day this is the most faithful adaptation of the story of The Hound, I have seen other films of the story but are way off the mark, Basil Rathbone will always be my Sherlock Holmes and I love watching all of the series I know Watson is a bit of a bumbler but that was typical of the day to make someone humorous.
I know, it's so hard to find films that actually follow the books that inspired them, especially in recent years. For one to be over 90% accurate (and the crucial parts nearly all intact) is a huge blast of fresh air.

Watson-bumbler, also many times he puts light on the situation, says the
Right word that nudges Sherlock's brain which he gratefully acknowledges to his friend Watson that he just solved a problem. Very English charming.
Watson's bumbling and mumbling under his breath, his facial expressions and mannerisms, add a unique and quaint flavor to this adaptation.
I disagree, the Jeremy Brett and Matt Frewer versions are the most faithful in my opinion. The least faithful is probably the Peter Cushing version
