I love all these old movies. No CGI, no foul language, no sex. Just great actors and stories.
@@paulconway384 that’s a lie, there were plenty of lbgtq and trans people in old films. They didn’t just appear after the millennium, you numpty
Excellent comment. I also like the old movies where talent was much stronger and they respected themselves and the audience with great plots and stories with no shameful sex scenes, nudity, foul language and gore. May Our Lord and God Jesus Christ Bless us all 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️💕💕💕💕
what's wrong with sex and 'foul language?' are you totally gay?
What is a rainbow person?
No wokeness either!
Was never a better Sherlock Holmes than Basil Rathbone.
Jeremy Brett was also an excellent Sherlock Holmes and the difference between the two was the quality of scripts and the screen adaptations. Hollywood took too many liberties IMO, and the later British production stayed closer to the original writings and storyline of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
damn straight !!!
he looks more like Sherlock Holmes than what i pictured in my head lol
Jeremy Brett is definitely his equal.....
Jeremy Brett
I love how Watson swells up with pride with that goofy expression on his face when Rathbone tells him how valuable he is.
I just wish the scripts didn't always make him out to be such a bumbling fool...
It makes it more goofy with that space between his teeth.
@@BobJones-ey1xm
Actually no what he said was not stupid.
Watson in the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was not a bumbling idiot he’s actually quite smart and a good match for Sherlock Holmes.
In the movie, he provides a comic relief to Sherlock Holmes seriousness, but in the books he’s just a serious and as smart as Sherlock Holmes.
He’s a doctor, so that says a lot.
@@alanatolstad4824 i kind of love it. although i dont agree he's a total fool. any time it matters he's helpful

Yes in the books he is the intelligent man of the world to Holmes's disfunctional genius -these films do something rather different but I still love them
Basil is a relative of mine. This is one of my favorite works of his honestly.
These old films were mesmerizing. Any movie with dark settings, stormy nights, foggy streets, boats, trains, old houses, intriguing characters, great storyline. They packed a lot of entertainment in just over an hour.
I would recommend you watch the Bat 1959 starring Vincent price, very similar and both brilliant ❤

Nigel Bruce was shot multiple times in both legs by a German machine gunner in World War I. You'd never know it, though, by how well he moved -- not even a limp. And who would guess that Bruce was actually younger than Basil Rathbone (born in 1895 and '92, respectively.) What a terrific duo.
Great intel! Wow
Wow that's interesting information.
Basil also won the Military Cross in WW1.
Basil Rathbone will always be my absolute favourite actor . He deserved a lot more accolades and recognition for his services to British film

Basil Rathbone IS Sherlock Holmes (also a Real War Hero) and Nigel Bruce is a perfect, amusing foil as Watson!
Great dialogue!
Some well directed scenes and good musical atmosphere, fab cossies.
Goodish production all round!
I'll give it..
5 pips 😃
Mary, some say 5 stars. Some say this gives me the fizz. You have just coined a new secret phrase for these films!! Pips!!!! Love it!! 5 pips to you!!!!
Nigel Bruce was sh •t multiple times in the legs during WW1, he served gallantly as well.
Love the way Watson mutters to himself!
After I rediscovered this series with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, I became quite enthralled with them and quite distraught when I discovered there was only 14. Long live Sherlock Holmes! 🙂
In case you read my comm, know that I am happy for you, stranger 😊
Yes, 2 from Fox, 12 from Universal. Also, don't miss their hilarious cameo in the Olsen & Johnson comedy, "CRAZY HOUSE", where Rathbone says... "I'm Sherlock Holmes. I know EVERYTHING!"
But don't forget the SHERLOCK HOLMES radio show, which Rathbone & Bruce did for years, during the entire time between the Fox films and all thru the Universals. And when Rathbone got sick of doing it, Bruce continued, opposite Tom Conway as Holmes!
After Bruce passed away, Rathbone played Holmes twice on TV-- but sadly, both appearances are "LOST".
He did however record 2 sets of "books on tape"in the 1960s, where he read original Conan Doyle stories! As the stories are narrated by Watson, this means Rathbone was actually playing Watson-- and in the 2nd set, where he did voices, he actually impersonated Nigel Bruce's Watson!
only 14?! good gracious me.
The games afoot !
There is also a radio series with them, if you like OTR.
My favorite duo. Basil and Nigel were a perfect fit. When Nigel Bruce passed, Basil Rathbone would not do another Sherlock Holmes film without his dear friend and fellow actor, Nigel Bruce. A great legacy of my favorite films.
I used to watch these old films with my grandad ,I loved spending time with him and now his gone 15 year's I find watching these brings me close to the best role model a child could have.
My absolute favorite Sherlock Holmes movie! The entire "look" of this vintage b&w film is mesmerizing. The cast, set decoration, and script are all a form of art. Basil IS Sherlock, no one ever did the part better, and Nigel epitomises Watson!
Nigel Bruce epitomizes Watson? Read the books and short stores. These are the only series of films that depict the character of Dr. John Watson as a brain damaged idiot. How could such a moronic buffoon even become a doctor? As for the character of Sherlock Holmes, Jeremy Brett's performance makes Basil Rathbone look like he's in a high-school play..
I love all of the pipe smoking....I can almost smell the rich blends of tobacco...makes me wish I smoked a pipe...
@@sshannon1948 Sherlock's morning pipe was known to be rank in the books. He saved what was left from each pipe he smoked the day before

You are correct my dear Waston.
This is one of their films when writers gave Nigel Bruce a enlarged chance to do comedy. His turn in the library during the storm is hilarious--thinking out loud and firing his gun.
That made me laugh!

They took a lot of liberty with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories..., but the acting skill & charisma of Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce (along w/ Dennis Hoey) carried these old "pot-boiler" flicks!
Always a pleasure..to watch these two
Well, Rathbone is simply the best.
Story telling at its best. CGI and explosions be damned! Every character an indevidual no matter how small the part for the actor playing the part and Rathbone is a legend in these roles. Much can and should be learned from these classic with today's cookie cutter actors and bland lifeless performances.
These things are classics for a reason. Glad to see they can still be seen 😊❤🧐

This was one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes movies. If I were in that movie, and could associate with the Good Comrades, I would like to be friends with Captain Simpson because he was a sea captain. No rubbish CGI or political correctness nonsense.
@@paulconway384 Curious as to how any of this isn't politically correct ? I can't imagine how any modern renditions of Holmes is any more or less politically correct as compared to the old films. Also, computer generated imagery is really nothing more than a set. Looks to me that they are using sets here. Not like it was all filmed on an empty stage without props.

Basil Rathbone is the epitome of smooth. I think the only thing that ever got him ruffled was when Dr. Watson was in trouble of some sort. Both actors are amazing. I just watched The court jester with Danny kaye. Basil played evil Sir Ravenhurst and, again, smooth as silk. Thank you for sharing.
