Something else about Rathbone...he loved animals and had a cat and many dogs. He rescued his black shepherd that was going to be killed for attacking a sheep. One of the best films of a great series! And don't forget, Rathbone and Bruce had a radio series at the same time! What a terrific team they made, perfectly cast; and friends in real life, as well! They always had a fine supporting cast, especially Dennis Hoey as Inspector Lestrade. Many character players showed up in different roles throughout the series.
Let’s not leave out the superb set design, cinematography, and lighting, all on a low budget. The director, Roy William Neill, was a master at this.

    • @LordZontar
      @LordZontar Před 3 lety +13

That was customary then. A lot of feature movies would be adapted as radio plays and starring as much of the movie cast as could be signed on, usually for the Lux Radio Theatre or some such programme. These Sherlock Holmes films were just a bit over an hour in run-time and usually part of a double- or triple-bill, so cutting them to a radio play timeframe was comparatively easy. Very popular shows in that era.

@@LordZontar Their half hour weekly radio series ran from 1939 to 1947 and was separate from the filmed features. The 220 episodes were a bit more "Doylesian" in feel, featuring Sherlock's brother Mycroft and Watson's wife Mary on occasion, I've got about 50 on cd, really great radio stuff! Their radio portrayal of the characters was far more extensive than their famed film series!

agreed, but more-so the reasons are related to the contract system and the shooting pace and schedule for the "B" picture unit at Universal (or any other studio). the shooting is very much like episodic television is today. if you notice, there's the same roster of co-stars and guest stars (the difference being the number of lines/scenes you were in), plus one real "special guest star" (a 'name' actress or "A"-picture player on the lot). the shooting schedules were probably no more than 8-10 days per feature. this format allowed all the pictures to be shot within - say- a one year or six month window, and just be stagger-released every 4-6 months thereafter. its way more efficient to book a contract player for a 6 month stretch, plus, that stable of actors becomes masters of the format for that particular series, able to work faster and more efficiently

Great speech by Sherlock Holmes at the end of "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death"-- Holmes' "Shining Altars" speech to Watson. Wonderful sentiments expressed by Holmes of the need to recognize what we owe to other people less fortunate than ourselves out of the goodness of our hearts through charity, not merely what we are compelled to give them through such things as taxation. But sadly, Holmes' prediction about the "days of grab and greed" by mankind being "on their way out" has not proven to be the case. Humanity unfortunately is still as greedy, selfish and self-centered as ever!

Perhaps Holmes was premature in stating that the "days of grab and greed are on their way out".
Yes, Humanity is still very much centered on "Me first, devil take the rest", BUT there is progress at hand. We, as a species, are progressing. But it is small steps over a large amount of time that will reveal the better features of human nature.
Once upon a time, slavery was accepted & condoned, then we realized that the practice was abhorrent. Perhaps because people realized that if it was OK to enslave "those" people, then someone, somewhere, would possibly enslave YOU. Vested self-interest can do wonders for social morality and progress, yeah?

Although your response comment is well-stated, (1) Holmes at the end of "The Scarlet Claw" wasn't referring to the deplorable practice of slavery, but to the greedy, selfish, and self-centered nature of humanity, and (2) you should have said that if people in the centuries when slavery was widespread had realized that because they thought it was acceptable to enslave others, that someone, somewhere, might someday enslave THEM (not "YOU"), then that realization just might have, but very likely would not have, led them to change their disgraceful approval and/or acceptance of that horrible practice.

This was the first Sherlock Holmes film my brothers and I ever saw, and we were fortunate it was graced by the incomparable Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the title roles. Back in the 1980's, when we were still children/early teens, we would get up at midnight on Fridays to watch these classic films. (To avoid disturbing the rest of the family, we used flashlights and snuck silently from the upstairs bedrooms into the basement of our old farmhouse, which really helped get us into the mood!) In retrospect, we were especially fortunate because SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH is probably the best of the Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Studios. Some of their early efforts were so thoroughly modernized that it was jarring, and, quite frankly, disappointing. But this film more closely captures the atmosphere of Doyle's stories, and even fleshes out the original short story THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL with great imagination. Thanks so much for posting this pristine digital copy with excellent sound and image quality!

Thing is, Basil became tired of the role after 14 films. Read his biography where he talks about his experiences while filming. Later in life he was typecast and some people would pick on him on the streets of New York where he lived. Those who passed Basil on the street during his life would call him "sherlock" instead of his real name, and then laugh at his visible discomfort as if they thought it was funny to pick on him. I don't blame Basil for trying to leave Sherlock behind. It seems like quite a few actors who have played Holmes have somehow suffered from it. All except for the last two have either died from the role or had their careers dissolved prematurely from their becoming typecast as Sherlock.

I've seen so many disparage Jeremy Brett as Holmes but fail to recognize the difference in Rathbone and Brett's style and the actual scripts they are given. Brett was the classic Victorian Holmes while Rathbone was the modern world Holmes of the 1940's as a WWII morale booster. Both are amazing actors but Brett is the definitive Holmes as per Doyle's original stories. Brett's 'exaggerated' mood swings as stated by some here fail to realize Brett was taking into account the cocaine habit (7% solution) and it's possible effects on a logical mind. I find Brett and Hardwicke the quintessential Holmes and Watson. Rathbone is by far my favorite film Holmes.

I think one can be a fan of both Rathbone and Brett in the role. Their portrayals also reflect different eras, so, naturally, Rathbone's portrayal of Holmes is less complex, more heroic, but he plays it with such a commanding presence that no one has really reached his level. Brett and Hardwicke, however, had the advantage of working almost directly from Doyle's incomparable canon of short stories. The great irony is that when Brett and Hardwicke appeared in Granada Television's version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, it did not come nearly as close as the 1937 version with Rathbone and Bruce in capturing the eerie suspense, the sense of adventure, and the overall atmosphere of the book. We, on the other hand, are very fortunate that with modern technology, all these versions are readily available to us. Thanks to those who brought these classics to CZcams!

From the original book/story, The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" is a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, involved Pythagoras for the solution and not a chess board, and roughly one third of the story occurred outside not inside. Also the treasure in the story was the Crown of England and its jewels which belong to the Kings and Queens of England.

basil is the best sherlock impersonation I have seen till date😍.... in the part where holmes is shot(pretend ofc) I felt so sick all of a sudden😥.... and when i got to know the bullet was fake, I felt happy although I personally thought it would be a real thriller if the bullets were real😅

Sherlock taught me to notice the small details , look for things that most people take for granted . And sometimes others will say something innocuous but it sparks an idea , another angle from someone else's perspective, Watson is constantly helping Holmes this way . We all have something to contribute in this life Holmes could see this , modern Detectives / inspectors would save more lives prevent more real crimes by thinking this way , alas are more worried about bad press and protecting the rich and their property

I love how the clock tower clouds are almost still, and in other shots it's supposed to be a raging windy night, you can even hear the fan blowing instead of wind effect

I once heard basil on a radio talk show. They were reviewing his filmography, and he referred to the Sherlock movies as his "bread and butter" I loved him sqaring off against errol Flynn in Robin hood and I think captain blood. Nigel Bruce best side kick since Ed mcmann

Basil is so awesome in these films, it's hard to fathom how he was second fiddle to Errol Flynn, who was also fantastic.

@@joanie3452 in the movies they made together, Flynn was the hero, but in reality Rathbone was a better fencer.

Basil Rathbone was the original Sherlock Holmes ,however, the best modern Sherlock must be Jeremy Brett, he puts so much into it.

Perhaps if we followed The warnings of the Curchills of our world to begin with, instead of Chamberlains uttering speeches like this, we might actually prevent fires before they get out of control.
