Son of a….ok, I confess, almost 62=let’s hear it for the 60s and 70s ✌🏽 🌈🎧🎤!
Im the same, no idea how many times I've rewatched them. They are the perfect duo and I don't believe that any other Watson has been so engaging especially with such a top notch Holmes.
Something else about Rathbone...he loved animals and had a cat and many dogs. He rescued his black shepherd that was going to be killed for attacking a sheep. Rathbone took her back to his home and he and his wife had the dog with no problems. The dog lived a long life with them. I especially love him for his kindness.
The quality of your aspect shines like a star, Lilly. I see you clearly, honey. You shine.
I do so love when people add special information about the actors we have so come to respect and love! Basil Rathbone was the one and only Holmes worth watching. And only Nigel Bruce fit to be Doctor Watson. I do so wish that there were many more movies that they had made together.
A lovely thing to know
This is so relatable. The man has all my respect

That closing speech by Basil Rathbone is just magic. That's why I return to these excellent films. His gravitas in the role is unmatched.
Absolutely wise and kind things that he said at the end
It was a wonderful closing speech. However, sadly, the greed has gotten worse, much worse, not better.😢
@@flyguy5941 That's probably true, but there are also many generous people.
It made me laugh when I thought of the Tory Government...
Well it was of course a Hollywood propaganda film shot in the middle of the war. And, although a tad cheesy looking back at it now, at the time it helped those in their darkest hour.
It’s also a shame that today’s crop of politicians have seemingly forgotten about decency ☹️☹️☹️
I'm glad to hear that Rathbone and Bruce were friends in real life. Their chemistry on screen was beautiful. I'm so glad I came upon this channel!!❤
64 is young, I am 72 and these films are my tonic for still being young amidst the calamity of our current state of human activities.

Sherlock Holmes is the greatest character ever created. How fortunate we can enjoy the perfect personification of Sherlock Holmes in Basil Rathbone.
You are so right! Too bad WW2 forced 20th Century Fox to abandon the series because they were faithfully following Conan Doyle's stories, unlike Universal. But Basil and Nigel are such joys to watch they make up for Universal's weaker films.
It’s hard to watch a bumbling Watson.
Basil Rathbone was a good Holmes, but the movies with Nigel Bruce are a little jarring, when we know that Watson is an accomplished doctor and an intellectual equal to Holmes.

David Bowie remains the best Sherlock Holmes...
When Watson says something that doesn't make sense and Holmes just gives him a look always cracks me up in the movies. LOL
This ending speech always brings me to tears. The terrible tragedy of two world wars (in WWI both Rathbone and Bruce excelled themselves in courage and honour) left this feeling. Those who had sacrificed their lives did so to rid the world of tyranny but also to make a better world.
Look at the degraded state we are in today. It breaks my heart.
Could be the tyrants are still among people. But alas they call the tyrany democracy and apparantly a majority vote for it.

YES! He is the perfect Holmes!! None other!
One of the best films of a great series! And don't forget, Rathbone and Bruce had a radio series at the same time! What a terrific team they made, perfectly cast; and friends in real life, as well! They always had a fine supporting cast, especially Dennis Hoey as Inspector Lestrade. Many character players showed up in different roles throughout the series.
Let’s not leave out the superb set design, cinematography, and lighting, all on a low budget. The director, Roy William Neill, was a master at this.
That was customary then. A lot of feature movies would be adapted as radio plays and starring as much of the movie cast as could be signed on, usually for the Lux Radio Theatre or some such programme. These Sherlock Holmes films were just a bit over an hour in run-time and usually part of a double- or triple-bill, so cutting them to a radio play timeframe was comparatively easy. Very popular shows in that era.
@@LordZontar Their half hour weekly radio series ran from 1939 to 1947 and was separate from the filmed features. The 220 episodes were a bit more "Doylesian" in feel, featuring Sherlock's brother Mycroft and Watson's wife Mary on occasion, I've got about 50 on cd, really great radio stuff! Their radio portrayal of the characters was far more extensive than their famed film series!
That is so cool
@@jimmypetersI'm sure we'd all love it if you'd upload them
@@nishottara777 Others have already done better on CZcams, as some of the Holmes radio uploads are over 11 hours! Rathbone was succeeded by Tom Conway in 1947, with Nigel Bruce remaining for that season, then John Stanley and several Watsons carried the series through 1949.

There have been many actors who have played Sherlock Holmes but Basil and Nigel were the best by far.

Books are more interesting, they give depth to Doyle's writing. Films are short and slightly different from the original, including this film. In the original the title is Musgrave Ritual. There are few women in Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.
@@ruthnaswamy4741 Slightly different! Most are so different they are hardly recognizable. But I love these Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce films so much that I don't care AT ALL! Usually I get so annoyed at films that don't follow the books. Maybe it is because I saw them so many times as a kid but to me they are perfect, make me feel cozy and warm and these actors will always.be the real Holmes and Watson to me.

I was always amazed at how Rathbone, looked so uncannily like, the original Sidney Paget illustrations of the Great Detective.
I love how all these Sherlock Holmes films with Basil and Nigel use the same repertoire of actors. It makes it all the more comfy. ;)
Right!?, that is unless Dr. Mortimer actually IS Professor Moriarty.
agreed, but more-so the reasons are related to the contract system and the shooting pace and schedule for the "B" picture unit at Universal (or any other studio). the shooting is very much like episodic television is today. if you notice, there's the same roster of co-stars and guest stars (the difference being the number of lines/scenes you were in), plus one real "special guest star" (a 'name' actress or "A"-picture player on the lot). the shooting schedules were probably no more than 8-10 days per feature. this format allowed all the pictures to be shot within - say- a one year or six month window, and just be stagger-released every 4-6 months thereafter. its way more efficient to book a contract player for a 6 month stretch, plus, that stable of actors becomes masters of the format for that particular series, able to work faster and more efficiently
@@snagglepussdacat5463:
That shooting formula is still practiced by the British-based TV series today.
Midsomer Murders, Foyle's War, and others use this system.
It works for the older actors and gives opportunities to the newer ones.
Seems like a win-win for the public!!!!

Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce were the BEST Sherlock & Watson. Their chemistry & acting is Super!
I agree with you on the duo, theses two are the best and Nigel Bruce has a lot to do with that. But for me in the title role Jeremy Brett is the best by a short-head but then his Watson's were rather anodyne potrayals.

Rathbone was in fact older than Bruce and a genuine WWl hero. He served as an officer in the intelligence section of his regiment and was decorated for valor for his willingness to conduct single man intel missions right up to the German lines.

Cheers to Dr. Watson. Some of these Rathbone/Bruce movies portray him as being hardly short of a fool, but this one did give him some degree of credit for competence. .
And, man, could he sing! Just listen to his rendition of the Scottish folk song loch Loman in pursuit to Algiers.
Great speech by Sherlock Holmes at the end of "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death"-- Holmes' "Shining Altars" speech to Watson. Wonderful sentiments expressed by Holmes of the need to recognize what we owe to other people less fortunate than ourselves out of the goodness of our hearts through charity, not merely what we are compelled to give them through such things as taxation. But sadly, Holmes' prediction about the "days of grab and greed" by mankind being "on their way out" has not proven to be the case. Humanity unfortunately is still as greedy, selfish and self-centered as ever!
Speak for yourself
@@pattimaeda6097. If you don't recognize that humanity, by and large, is still greedy and selfish as all hell, then I can't help you to see reality! Just look, for example, at the disgusting, ridiculous hoarding of toilet paper by selfish people at the start of the coronavirus pandemic! As the old expression goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink"!
Perhaps Holmes was premature in stating that the "days of grab and greed are on their way out".
Yes, Humanity is still very much centered on "Me first, devil take the rest", BUT there is progress at hand. We, as a species, are progressing. But it is small steps over a large amount of time that will reveal the better features of human nature.
Once upon a time, slavery was accepted & condoned, then we realized that the practice was abhorrent. Perhaps because people realized that if it was OK to enslave "those" people, then someone, somewhere, would possibly enslave YOU. Vested self-interest can do wonders for social morality and progress, yeah?
@@TheJMPD . Although your response comment is well-stated, (1) Holmes at the end of "The Scarlet Claw" wasn't referring to the deplorable practice of slavery, but to the greedy, selfish, and self-centered nature of humanity, and (2) you should have said that if people in the centuries when slavery was widespread had realized that because they thought it was acceptable to enslave others, that someone, somewhere, might someday enslave THEM (not "YOU"), then that realization just might have, but very likely would not have, led them to change their disgraceful approval and/or acceptance of that horrible practice.
@@michaelbarlow6610 I was only using slavery as an example, not saying that the character was discussing it. And I wasn't using the word "YOU" to refer to yourself personally, but to the people that believed that the practice was acceptable.
And sadly, greed and the quest for greater profits still exist today. However, I still hold out hope that the human race will grow out of the "mine, mine, mine!" phase.
"The old days of grab and greed are on their way out." Sherlock should be around today to see how wrong he was.
Watching this I find it hard to believe Rathbone was older, it looks absolutely incredible.

I was thrilled to see the Old Sherlock Holmes movies which I loved so many years ago. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are perfect for the parts.
This was the first Sherlock Holmes film my brothers and I ever saw, and we were fortunate it was graced by the incomparable Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the title roles. Back in the 1980's, when we were still children/early teens, we would get up at midnight on Fridays to watch these classic films. (To avoid disturbing the rest of the family, we used flashlights and snuck silently from the upstairs bedrooms into the basement of our old farmhouse, which really helped get us into the mood!) In retrospect, we were especially fortunate because SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH is probably the best of the Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Studios. Some of their early efforts were so thoroughly modernized that it was jarring, and, quite frankly, disappointing. But this film more closely captures the atmosphere of Doyle's stories, and even fleshes out the original short story THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL with great imagination. Thanks so much for posting this pristine digital copy with excellent sound and image quality!
Loved your childhood story but, PLEASE!, the word is "sneaked," not "snuck." There is no such word as "snuck." Not in any REPUTABLE dictionary.

Grand old movie and grand old actors. Nothing like it today to compare. Only one fault to find, that they didn’t make MORE Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce!
Thing is, Basil became tired of the role after 14 films. Read his biography where he talks about his experiences while filming. Later in life he was typecast and some people would pick on him on the streets of New York where he lived. Those who passed Basil on the street during his life would call him "sherlock" instead of his real name, and then laugh at his visible discomfort as if they thought it was funny to pick on him. I don't blame Basil for trying to leave Sherlock behind. It seems like quite a few actors who have played Holmes have somehow suffered from it. All except for the last two have either died from the role or had their careers dissolved prematurely from their becoming typecast as Sherlock.
I agree, every time I watch a sherlock Holmes movie I wish they would look in the can for more.

Things are a damn sight better now than they were in 1943.
That was jaw dropping. How far we have not come.
@@Chahlie Umm, we've come an enormous distance since 1943. My 2 boys would fit right in.
The story this is "loosely" based on The Adventure of The Musgrave Ritual is one of my favorite Doyle stories.
I've seen so many disparage Jeremy Brett as Holmes but fail to recognize the difference in Rathbone and Brett's style and the actual scripts they are given. Brett was the classic Victorian Holmes while Rathbone was the modern world Holmes of the 1940's as a WWII morale booster. Both are amazing actors but Brett is the definitive Holmes as per Doyle's original stories. Brett's 'exaggerated' mood swings as stated by some here fail to realize Brett was taking into account the cocaine habit (7% solution) and it's possible effects on a logical mind. I find Brett and Hardwicke the quintessential Holmes and Watson. Rathbone is by far my favorite film Holmes.
It's always been a real mystery to me why Universal didn't use more of the original Conan Doyle stories.
Agree on all,points
👍🏻
I think one can be a fan of both Rathbone and Brett in the role. Their portrayals also reflect different eras, so, naturally, Rathbone's portrayal of Holmes is less complex, more heroic, but he plays it with such a commanding presence that no one has really reached his level. Brett and Hardwicke, however, had the advantage of working almost directly from Doyle's incomparable canon of short stories. The great irony is that when Brett and Hardwicke appeared in Granada Television's version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, it did not come nearly as close as the 1937 version with Rathbone and Bruce in capturing the eerie suspense, the sense of adventure, and the overall atmosphere of the book. We, on the other hand, are very fortunate that with modern technology, all these versions are readily available to us. Thanks to those who brought these classics to CZcams!
The complete Holmes, in 2 volumes, were the first books I ever bought out of my childhood allowance. I've read them over and over. I know the character. As Holmes, Jeremy Brett stinks. Really stinks.

Basil's words at the concluded portion of the film were fantastically honorable and true the time of change has come and. Too hope will never conclude.
basil is the best sherlock impersonation I have seen till date😍.... in the part where holmes is shot(pretend ofc) I felt so sick all of a sudden😥.... and when i got to know the bullet was fake, I felt happy although I personally thought it would be a real thriller if the bullets were real😅
How many times has poor Mrs Hudson prepared a nice meal for two and Holmes abruptly decides to leave to work on a new case....and, the food goes untouched??!!
Perhaps the “ irregulars”?
This is my absolute favorite Sherlock Holmes movie 🥰
thank you..I will not forget your comment. ty
Mine too, I love it.
And mine.Love the chess game scene.
Superb
Sherlock taught me to notice the small details , look for things that most people take for granted . And sometimes others will say something innocuous but it sparks an idea , another angle from someone else's perspective, Watson is constantly helping Holmes this way . We all have something to contribute in this life Holmes could see this , modern Detectives / inspectors would save more lives prevent more real crimes by thinking this way , alas are more worried about bad press and protecting the rich and their property
I love how the clock tower clouds are almost still, and in other shots it's supposed to be a raging windy night, you can even hear the fan blowing instead of wind effect
I once heard basil on a radio talk show. They were reviewing his filmography, and he referred to the Sherlock movies as his "bread and butter" I loved him sqaring off against errol Flynn in Robin hood and I think captain blood. Nigel Bruce best side kick since Ed mcmann
Oh if only that day did come! We're still waiting on it.
The way homes tricks his way out of being killed by the good doctor is just fantastic is just fantastic. Right up to you and including the blank cartridges.
Nothing like old classic movies. Basil as Sherlock... He nailed those roles!
If this were a real " house" I would love to explore it!! I think it would be great to own something like that ☺️
Basil is so awesome in these films, it's hard to fathom how he was second fiddle to Errol Flynn, who was also fantastic.
Second fiddle in what capacity?
@@joanie3452 in the movies they made together, Flynn was the hero, but in reality Rathbone was a better fencer.
"The old days of grab and greed are on their way out." 🙄🙄🙄
Basil Rathbone was the original Sherlock Holmes ,however, the best modern Sherlock must be Jeremy Brett, he puts so much into it.
A fantastic final message. It’s only too bad none of us will live to see that day.
Compared to what things were like in 1943, there has been huge improvement.
Glass half empty or half full both are correct! More to do certainly but much achieved!
Perhaps if we followed The warnings of the Curchills of our world to begin with, instead of Chamberlains uttering speeches like this, we might actually prevent fires before they get out of control.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ! A Genius. The father of legendary and eternity Sherlock Holmes-
I GREW UP WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES, SINCE I WAS 7 YEARS OLD UPON THE FIJIAN ISLAND, DURING THE 1950.. NOW 69 PLUS, STILL VIEWING IT.. LOVE IT.
" Hello, who's this " my favorite Sherlock Holmes 🤣
