I can NEVER get enough of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
I think it says a lot about their friendship in the sense that Basil refused to play Sherlock without Nigel by his side… When Nigel Bruce was to ill to act any more Basil Rathbone refused to work on any more Sherlock films without him. A loyal friend.

The reason that Universal never made any more Sherlock Holmes films after the last one of the 12 in the Universal series, "Dressed To Kill"(1946) was because Rathbone decided that he had had enough of the role of Holmes and felt that he was being typecast by that role and decided to end both his movie and radio contracts simultaneously, which supposedly caused friction in his relationship with Bruce since Bruce wanted the films and radio series to continue with both of them as Holmes and Watson respectively. Bruce's illness occurred in the 1950's when he became too sick to appear with Rathbone on the stage in Rathbone's wife Ouida's revival of the Conan Doyle characters in a theatrical play.

"The Creeper" was played by Rondo Hatton. Born in 1894 (he was 49 years old here), he had a rough go of it. Not only was he exposed to poison gas in World War I, which injured his lungs, he developed acromegaly, which causes deformation of the bones in the head, hands and feet. He was a reporter for the Tampa Tribune and one of his assignments was to write a piece on the filming of "Hell Harbor." While there, his disfigurement caught the eye of the movie's director, Henry King, who offered Hatton a role. He moved to Hollywood and got a few bit parts, almost all uncredited, until he landed this role. After this, Universal had big plans for him in their horror films but, sadly, Hatton had two heart attacks the year after "The Pearl of Death" was released and died in 1946 at 51 years of age.

While I would agree that Basil is the best Sherlock, I think that Ian Fleming is a much better Watson ( the same person who would later write the 007 character books) and the gentleman who was Sherlock before was the second best Sherlock, I don't remember his name at the moment but he did quite a few Sherlock Holmes movies before Basil became started to play the part, and Basil had a lot more experience in acting.

I know is an overused cliche, but these films are so wholesome. There is no special effect grandeur, massive sets or anything like that. Just actors acting on a small set. I remember a classmate of mine printed a picture of Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the said roles when I was nine years old. Basil Rathbone was in his robe, seated, pondering, while holding his pipe, with Nigel Bruce standing next to him as they talked.
Both Basil Rathbone and Ronald Howard were the ones I remember who brought the man to life in their own ways, therefore, they both have a special place in my heart as Sherlock Holmes.

Just the overal naive stumbling fool made me laugh so much. When i would have watched this on LSD i would have laughed until my lips were blue from a lack of oxygen like when you are having a non controllable laughing kick when you have taken acid(LSD).Doesn't matter what it is then, everything makes you laugh until you can hardly breath anymore.Had it with a friend,we laughed so hard with anything and everything our lips became blue of a lack of oxygen and it even became painful from our abs(the muscles were contracting so much from the laughing,we were both having a mini birth of our own😂).And then the worst moment came when we went into a bakery and there was a client before us and we heard the lady of the shop speak to the client before us(which was an obvious regular) that her husband just died🤦‍♂️😱 and somehow i ordered our éclaires(i think it was éclaires,i am from Belgium and am 41 now,a long time ago, they are common here in every bakery) without laughing or just a small grin. How i did it i will never know until my record is being read before Allah on Judgement Day. I hope she didn't notice and thought we were laughing because of that,Insjallah(God willing). May Allah(God) forgive me if that was the case.I was 16 back then.It just shot trough my mind the reason i bring this up is because of Sherlock his drug use🤯.

Jeremy Brett is the quintessential Holmes. Edward Hardwicke is by the Watson that Doyle wrote. However remember Rathbone and Brett play two different timeframes of Holmes. Rathbone was the modern WWII era Holmes to boost morale while Brett is the classic Victorian Holmes as written by Doyle. Each actor brought their interpretation to the role. We also need to remember each actor was subject to the writers adaptation to the original. Case in point the Rathbone era Holmes never dealt with the cocaine habit of Holmes while Victorian era Brett tackled it with Brett trying to add cocaine to a flawless logical mind. My opinion.

The actor who played the role of Sgt. Bleeker in the Sherlock Holmes film, "The Pearl of Death" was probably the same actor who played Sgt. Bleeker in the Holmes film, "House of Fear". Interesting twist at the end of "Pearl of Death" in which Holmes briefly loses control of the situation when Jiles Conover cleverly dislodged the electrical cord knocking out the light in the room in the doctor's house and wrestled Holmes' gun away from Holmes and then Holmes had to bluff the Creeper into believing that Naomi Drake killed Dr.Watson in order to get the Creeper to attack Jiles Conover. Great Sherlock Holmes film! One of the best in the series of 12 Universal Studios' Sherlock Holmes films.

That was Ian Wolfe as the proprietor of the art shop, who also played an art dealer in "Sherlock Holmes in Washington." He is probably best remembered today as Mr. Atoz and Septimus, from the Star Trek episodes "All Our Yesterdays" and "Bread and Circuses," respectively.

Basil is the one and only Sherlock Holmes. If Conan Doyle wrote a screenplay, Basil Rathbone would have been cast. He IS Sherlock Holmes.

Rondo Hatton played the Creeper again in 1946 in the movie "The Brute Man," which was mocked on an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It was his last film, and he died before it was released, due to a heart attack brought on by acromegaly, the glandular disorder that gave him his unusual appearance.

"sedative' is a very vague term/word. A drink after work or a 30 minutes nap or a massage can be a sedative.

The closing scene with Holmes and Watson is moving... Nigel Bruce´s expression is remarkably sober and yet fully of empathy as he listens and looks intently at Holmes, whilst Holmes final words are chillingly as relevant today as they were in 1944. Brilliant acting.

Like inspector Japp on the (David Suchet) Poirot series.
Only Japp always got along great with Poirot, came to him for help, and they were actually friends, and Japp always defended Poirot , even calling him the world's greatest detective....unlike Lestrade, who I always wanted to see bested. Lol

Lestrade actually has some solid character development in the stories. He was very tenacious if unimaginative and skeptical, but he soon came round to accepting Holmes' line of thinking.

    • @t-rexcellentreviews1663
      @t-rexcellentreviews1663 Před 2 lety +2

@@hrishikeshnair586 I agree, for all of Lestrade’s and unimaginative thinking and skeptical detective skills, he is still clearly a good man who respects and even admires Holmes and more often then not listens to his wise council, for his part, I think Sherlock clearly likes him as well and sees him as a member of the force he can trust, the unique trio of Holmes, Watson and Lestrade is always a joy to watch in these movies, beneath all the jabs at one another, their is a real sense of friendship and brotherhood between them.
