I love these movies. No swearing, good plots, and great acting.
I miss good movies like this.
I can't help thinking how polite everyone was to each other on the train. Except for the three goons that rushed Greyson, obviously.
I just turned 70,and Iâve always enjoyed watching Sherlock Holmes movies,as long as Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were in it.
The ending where they are driving past the Capital and Holmes talking about Democracy brought a tear to my eyes. Its under attack and people aren't seeing it
hahaha. The Hypocrisy of Democracy. uk usa, and ussr world terrorists .
Keep your head up. This Democracy has been under attack since 1781 but it continues to survive. Why? Because when their backs are to the wall Americans will stand up and fight for truth and justice.
He was referring directly to the Nazis. This was filmed during WW2. All British movies at that time contained stirring patriotic references to boost wartime morale.
America will never be defeated, except from within. đșđž
â@MrAJR76
We know what they were talking about. The person commenting was reminded in the last scene about what's happening in America today.
My father fought the nazis & fascists in world war two. He's turning in his grave with what's happening now with treasonous fascist nazi republican MAGAts trying to overthrow our government and create an oppressive dictatorship the likes of which he fought against.
I am 72 and glad to hear someone else watches so much.
l watch Sherlock Holmes almost everyday sometimes two or three times a day. we go back for many years since l am 69 years. đ đ
It's his voice.....I listen to these movies while I work from home. â„
Cool we can all find these classics that we saw as kids and now even understand more about what we enjoyed back then cool beans all the way around I wonât fart in anyoneâs presence
I can say that while l don't watch that much since l have discovered this treasure trove of movies just yesterday l have watched 5 movies in 48 hours. I have been watching Holmes since l was 8 years old and, l am now 67.
69, nice
you clearly have a high IQ.
I remember watching these as a child. I loved Sunday Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chan. How I long for simpler times.
Basil Rathbone was the best Holmes. No one to touch him. And what a partnership he had with Nigel Bruce.
I was of the same thinking until a couple of years ago when I saw Jeremy Bret play him in the Sherlock Holmes series from the 80's. He was the same well spoken Englishman, but with a bit of an edge. They're both brilliant to be honest.
Jeremy Brett ...End of Coversation..
I agree. They are exquisite đ€
I'm partial to Cushing as Holmes. It's a pity we didn't see more of him in that role.
we need Sherlock Holmes in Washington today!
The media would crucify him and keep on until the sheeple believed it. The fbi would raid his home and trump up charges against him. Prosecutors paid by evil personified would have him in court til he wouldn't have time to work and judges would back them up.
I love the way Holmes says "thank you."
I donât think even the great Sherlock could help with the corruption in DC today!
Cinema fans of all generations are lucky that CZcams preserves these Classic Movies đ„đŹ

The chemistry/timing of Rathbone and Bruce is amazing !!!!!!!! Love it đ
Basil & Nigel! The BEST! They were actually really close friends. Pretty sure BASIIL passed, & left Nigel really rattled. Iâm so glad they were friends. These are classic memories that l will ALWAYS WATCH!! âšđđ„đđŸ

Even though I love these ghd best sherlock was jeremy brett
@@scottchappell3193 Who? đđ
Well said sir !!!
agreed
Peter Cushing was also good.
The barman in the train scenes is Clarence Muse. He does a lot more with that tiny role than most actors could. Muse, a law-school dropout, became an actor, singer, director and songwriter. His best known song is "When It;s Sleepy Time Down South". His final appearance was in a film released on his 90th birthday -- the day after his death.
Thankyou for that. People tend to overlook the actors in the more minor roles.
I'm guilty of that because I didn't even know his name.
I Love comments like yours ,
Appreciate the info on Mr Clarence Muse.
Thanks for sharing this information
Unfortunately, even with a large speaking role, they didn't even put him on the list of players.
Basil and Nigel people still love their team up 60 years + later
And forever will.
Basil Rathbone, one of the greatest actors of all time!
Yes agreed, no role he couldn't play
@@ange9663how about Frank Spencer?
Wartime movies yet with timeless mysteries. Basil and Nigel were great actors in these roles
try Jeremy Britt!
When I read a Sherlock Holmes story I have always Basil Rathbone in mind.
Basil Rathbone was a Great actor!!!!...and Nigel Bruce so Lovable....Sherlock had such love for the his friend Watson...just a marvelous series and Im so thankful I get to watch these over and over again..
Rathbone's friendship with Bruce was just as real and deep as Holme's and Watson's fictional relationship. They worked together on radio for several years and stayed friends for life.
Rathbone and Bruce were both World War 1 veterans - Bruce permanently wounded and Rathbone was refused when he tried to re-enlist at the start of WW2. (He was more valuable to Britain in these films. Note the admiration of the Capitol quoting Churchill in the closing scene of this one.)
Sherlock Holmes was deductively brilliant, but often Watson had some seemingly irrelevant impressionistic - inductive - observation that helped clinch Holmes' deduction.
More could have been made of that, with a shot of Watson then having a sly, satisfied expression in his eyes.
Basil Rathbone..the BEST...
"They don't make them like that anymore!" I know we've all heard that expression before but it's certainly true of these great Rathbone/Bruce movies. Love the Churchill quote at the end too. And for those of you who don't know, this pair also did a long-running Sherlock Holmes radio series too, which you can hear online. Nobody ever did Holmes better!
Churchill was a war profiteer.
Can't say enough about Rathbone and Bruce. Just the 2 perfect actors for those roles
Thank you very much for giving us this collection. Basil Rathbone has no equal at the role of Sherlock Holmes.
SH movies are the absolute epitome of the English language. Rathbone is impeccable !
Never get tired of watching the classic and especially Sherlock
This was one of the better episodes Iâve seen. Loved watching the matchbook being passed around from person to person. Knowingly and unknowingly. Fantastic!
Yes very Hitchcockian for a Holmes episode! I regretted the casting a bit because it's obvious who's bad and who's good but eventually I realized that wasn't the point. Great show.
Holmes is awesome. Totally without match and hence matchless.
The matchbook with an endless supply of matches! đ
Incredible actors and my favorite portraying Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson! This movie and all the others shows how incredibly talented and dedicated these 2 men performed in the greatest mysteries of all time!
... and it was called, "The Tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra" and the storyline was about a Sherlock Holmes' Adventure. Lo and behold, Firesign Theatre actually based the title on Dr. Watson's "Tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra" from this movie, "Pursuit to Algiers!" I loved the Firesign theater's portrayal of Holmes and to know that the title actually came from a movie was quite astonishing.
I agree emphatically!
Love the fact that even though they're bitter enemies, Stanley and Holmes are incredibly polite to each other... Got to love a British villain. đ
If only that kind of civility was practiced today! Love these old movies. :)
Donât forget people itâs just a movie. Thatâs how they wrote the script.
Polite to the end - well, someone's end.
@@scotttilson8876 : well said. People use tae believe anything they see in a movie. Those who've got killed in the movie, dinnae die at all. B. Rathbone iz deathless. The evidence iz I had tea wi' him yesterday at five.
Yes, the only person who's polite now is Hannibal Lecter.
Thank you very much for posting this. These films are so great. There's nothing of this quality anymore so thanks for keeping the
tradition going.
I really like enjoy watching the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
Like totally...đ
I love how Watson is always exited about life .He is totally in different wipe than Sherlock. Sherlock is all business and Watson is always enjoying something.
Holmes is always ripping him up in public
Any relationship requires a balance
True, the milkshake, the gum, the curry in another film he really is a brilliant character is Watson.
Watson is always exited?....totally in different wipe? Plz explain what you're attempting to convey.
@@joanie3452 Believe the 'curry' reference (Curry? Horrible stuff) by Holmes was while on a train in "Dressed to Kill"
Next to the books themselves Basil Rathbone was the best Sherlock Holmes. And made while WW2 was going on, and England was under attack. In this Movie- Winston Churchill was probably asking for America's help- as mentioned in the end. Great film!
What a beautiful view of our Capital Building through the eyes of British heroes, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. đ
Of course, the dome of the U.S. Capitol building was modeled on that of St. Paul's cathedral in London. :)
I truly loved the way the elderly lady rolled her Râs. proper 1940âs style đ”đ»

His hair bothers me so much when they do it this way. đ
âFlash Gordon, seems to be a very capable fellowâ. Funny.
I've always wondered why Watson seems so clueless đ€. Thinking about the films đ„. They were started while Britain đŹđ§ was in the midst of WWII and America đșđž was entering. The subject matter. Murder, terror, treachery and espionage was dark. Having Watson add some levity to the films đ„ made the moviegoers forget their worries đ at the time. Lightening the mood.

Renee Richburg - I agree and this is similar to how I feel that Sean Connery was the only James Bond. Thanks to films, we can say that as long as we are around.
Yeah I wish heâd made more he was so good
Absolutely agreed!
With out a doubt
I have enjoyed the acting of Basil Rathbone in all his roles.
Basil was excellent w Errol Flynn & Olivia De Havilland in The Adventures of Robin Hood (Warner Bros, circa 1938, glorious Technicolor)
Dr. Watson, what a hoot! A cross-eyed Carrier pigeon story and Holme's saying " We've got it" and Watson's reply "clear as mud to me." đđ
This film had more humor and fun than most others.
Terror by Night had some humorous parts too with Watson and Lestrade.
Watson :"Two sheets of paper....that's too dry to swallow"
Holmes: "Especially legal documents " lol!!
You stole my comment, man!!! LOL!
I meant, 'ma'am'! ;-)

Yes love him too. He was the best at Sherlock Holmes.
I've watched three of these today. Great fun, thank you!
Whadda ya mean , great fun ? This actually happened .
i get on a run, myself!
Watson(28:24), on hearing that the mice had been released from the cage, zeroes in on that singular bit of trivia among all the other detail: " What happened to the mice I wonder". Holmes replies: "An intriguing line of thought, but not essential to the case". I just love that exchange----hysterical. Basil can be so delightfully droll.
people in these comments complain that Nigel's Watson is dumb. I feel differently about it - they're balanced. Watson is all heart, and a counter to Holmes's insouciance which can be mean and narrow. It's funny about the mice, yes. I'd be worrying about them too.
Yup. Maybe the second best line in the whole movie the 1st was when watching said about eating the paper being too dry And home said legal about legal paper being dryer misquoting but that's the gist of it very funny

This needs a re-write. Watching may be meant as Watson,. Home, about Holmes, etc , etc
Nigel Bruce was actually younger than Basil Rathbone
When I watched these films years ago, it irked me that Dr Watson was portrayed as a baffoon. Now .. I find him totally adorable, so sweet, wonderfully comic. Cheers up dreaded lockdown.
Ăwww
The "foil effect" which is a literary technique used by Doyle. To make a smart character look really super smart pair him up with a not too bright character.
See my reply under guyrestovo's comment.
@Mary Smit And note that whereas girls and women have a high casualty rate in the British setting of these, the American girl is saved ... presumably not to offend chivalrous American sensibilities.
@@999Patriots â Then it was a very flawed, narrow-minded technique. I love these movies and especially the underlying patriotism towards the war effort. Many of these movies - like this one released in 1943 - were made during WW 2 - when the fate of the world was still unknown (The Germans did not surrender until May 1945).
