To me there is only one Sherlock Holmes and that's Basil Rathbone. No one else even comes close. His mannerisms, his speech patterns, his demeanor, his attitude. All perfect.
What mannerisms? He has the same facial expression all the time. He doesn't show any emotions or feelings. They act as if they had a stick in the ass. Maybe only their lady housekeeper is more flexible.
Hugh! Mr. World has spoken. Wen juckts.
😅
Yeah he was awesome.
He was born to play this role. He looked the part, and was the best Sherlock Holmes of all time.
I do agree very much to your statement.
These movies are still better than any Hollywood thriller today!
For sure, just wish for something more for today. Seen them all.
Cliche remark from someone ancient🙄
I agree!
As crazy Hollywood today as it’s so woke and liberal as they have always been they haven’t made any good movies in years all they make are the awful marvel movies 🍿 but the Sherlock movies they made in 2010 I believe were good but can’t beat the classic ones.

I agree unreservedly.
Its the best!..my cousins and I used to laugh and cut up when we'd watch these and the old Universal monster movies.. Its Heaven.
Basil portrays Sherlock beautifully.
A very long time ago, my brother and his friends were in their lateens. They gathered every late Sunday night to watch Sherlock Holmes. My sister and I were allowed to sneak in to watch the movies with them, a warm loving memory of my very generous older brother and better times. ❤️
I love all of the Rathbone Holmes movies and never tire of them. One of my favorites is The Scarlet Claw. Early on, Holmes asks Watson to inconspicuously mingle and observe locals in the town pub. The sequence is filled with dark atmosphere and humor-Watson’s sleuth deficiency at its best and some most memorable characters.
I've watched The Scarlet claw about forty times
@@larryjohnson5092 So have I! Marlene
Scarlet Claw is the best. Spider woman had a chance to tie for the best. Has some of the best scenes of all the movies. Bogged down a bit with too much Rajnà. Sing.entire ßcene with Lastrade and Watson lamenting is brilliantly done
Watch Rathbone head crack the corner of table ala William Holden
Thank you for the tip. I will look for it.
I love the old versions of Sherlock Holmes.. Rathbone, is the number Holmes in my book.brilliant.
and Bruce as Watson!
The little boy that plays Larry is a really good actor. Rathbone's accent is epic. So is Lastrade's. I love the contrast between different British accents.

jeremy brett beats the crap outta him
@@blabla-rg7ky A long debate for sure.
@@michael7324 not even a debate, much less a long one. And the reason for this is that the guy in this movie acts like a robot, not like a human, he doesn't have the same wide range of emotions and thinking that you see Brett express through his gestures and facial expressions. Every thing about Basil Rathbone's portrayal of Holmes, suggests decency and gentlemanliness. A quality, that is sadly missing from today's society. Last seen in Jeremy Brett....
Well Said!
Indeed.
You have got to be kidding--Jeremy Brett? No-o-o-o ... Basil Rathbone is the perfect embodiment of Conan Doyle's Holmes. Brett is just irritating as hell.
@@fredericmartin7148 a Yorkshire man says Brett was superb.
Favorite scene, The postman says Holmes was an old herring gut, and Watson clobbers him, finds out he has clobbered Holmes, and swoons like a Lass, classic, Watson just happens to swoon into the lap of a conveniently placed chair, it seems he looked to make sure the chair was in the right place before falling.
I find Holmes' fatherly approach to children really sweet.
I think Basil Rathbone must have been a very decent human being
@@myriaddsystems So do I. He wasn't perfect, he had his flaws, but I think his close relationship with his daughter often showed in his interactions with children whenever he played Sherlock Holmes, and those moments often made me smile whenever I was watching those movies; it always felt like he wasn't acting whenever he greeted, or comforted children.

Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett are the greatest Holmes portrayals.
Different but both outstanding
Jeremy Brett was excellent, but I always felt he was overacting. Basil Rathbone smoothly embodies the character. Can’t get enough of these films.
Gale Sondergaard, was simply stunning! None, today, can come anywhere near that performance - none can hold a candle to her.

Agreed, that's about all i watch. Far better than todays television. My favorite is the Abbott and Costello tv series. 🤣 i have always been obsessed with history, especially American History. When i watch these shows i put myself in that era. Mrs Hudson was such a darling
I agree, I knew women as her growing up, they sure knew how to tempt a boys taste buds with great food and treats and a warm hug and great kindness..... sigh.....
I never thought I could find an old black and white movie to be so funny but indeed Watson is hilarious!

No villain, or villainess, could ever outwit Arthur Conan Doyle's formidable sleuth. What a pleasure to watch genuine talent. NOTE: Earlier, in 1940, Basil Rathbone and Gale Sondergaard worked together in the mega hit "The Mark of Zorro," starring Tyrone Power. Those actors could do ANYTHING. {sigh}
Hello Tanya, How are you doing?
@@michaelpatrick7888 They both were in THE MARK OF ZORRO starring Tyrone Power.
@Van Messner Tyrone Power was the star of The Mark of Zorro. You obviously didn't read my comment correctly, dear.
@Van Messner When the camera was on Tyrone's back, the swordsman was Ralph Faulkner, master swordsman who taught Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Ronald Coleman, and Errol Flynn, and more. I know this because I took fencing lessons from him and there were photos of him with every great movie star of the day plastered all over his studios (The Falcon Studios) on Hollywood Boulevard, including stills of his work on THE MARK OF ZORRO as Tyrone Power's fight double, dear.
@@tanyasimon595I have read elsewhere that it was his son, not the swordmaster himself. Regardless of who it is that is my all time favorite sword fights ever committed to film. Rathebone moves like an absolute snake at one point just writhing back and forth. It's so remarkable and I miss that kind of practical skill in modern filmmaking.
The incident with the postman was hilarious...

The Scarlet Claw and Dressed to Kill are 2 of my favorites.
Why can't I get a landlady like Mrs. Hudson? She's such a sweet old lady.

The dialog and the scenes with Adria Spedding and Rajnee Singh were really memorable.
Gale Sondergaard was originally cast as the the Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz. There are costume and makeup pics of her. She would have been purely scarey....imo, Margaret Hamilton brought some humor, I don't think the world was ready for Ms Sondergaards witchiness. She went on to create many unforgettable roles. Her performance with Bette Davis in
The Letter, was fantastic.
i grew up watching these films. now as a senior citizen i can enjoy them again so i thank you. the oldies havent been shown on television for many decades, so we thank you again for this.
Yeah, film series like this, the Abbot and Costello films, the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby Road films, the Bowery Boys films, Ma and Pa Kettle movies, and others were a staple of local independent TV stations back in the 60's, 70's, and into the 80's prior to cable TV making it into a majority of households. Those independent local stations often showed a lot of movies late at night or even overnight when the network affiliates went off the air at some point in the wee hours, and they often showed old movies all afternoon on Saturday or Sunday. It was mostly movies old enough that network TV stations weren't interested in showing them anymore as they wouldn't generate good ratings except as maybe a late movie to show overnight if the affiliate didn't go off the air until morning. But for an independent channel the combination of low broadcast fees for a 20 year old or older movie, and being happy with much lower ratings as long as you made money, meant such old films were perfect to fill time along with syndicated game shows, and sitcom or drama reruns from a decade or two earlier.
I can relate to what you're saying. I used to watch them on Sunday afternoons when I was a teenager and now as a senior citizen I'm enjoying them all over again. I read the stories as well.
I love how everyone dresses like they're going to the opera even if it's merely going around the corner to buy cat food.
I thought I was the only one who thought/observed that.
They took pride in their appearance, especially the women, in those days.
@Mister Google Guess that's why Mrs. Cleaver wore pearls while doing the housework.
My mother dressed nicely til her dying day. Born 1922.
Strike a light guv'nor and no ,mistake!
This film scared me to death!!! Death by spider bites is sooooo gross!!!! That little boy was also totally unsettling!!! Excellent movie of course featuring THE QUINTESSENTIAL SHERLOCK HOLMES!!! 💋
Its chosen pray is human beings.. ha
That spider wouldn’t kill you if it had bitten you as most spiders that size like tarantulas, bird eating spiders & trapdoor spiders do not have a venomous bite that would kill a human. One spider that size that would kill you is a brown recluse, but most venomous spiders are small like the black widow and the red back spider 🕷 One thing big spiders like tarantulas can do is scare the shit out of you if you have arachnophobia
Also the Lycosa genus or Wolf Spiders generally don’t have a harmful venom. He called the spider a lycosa carnivorous which is not a real spider. They sucker you in with the Latin name lycosa which is real and give it a false sub species name as there are about 100 different sub species depending on where in the world it lives
@@nichhodge8503 Depending on where it lives, like the Obongo river lol. Obviously just making stuff up. He even called it an insect. The Okavango might have tarantulas but lycosa (wolf spiders) are much smaller. People still believed in the whole tarantella myth back then.
I have a bird Eater. It is very sweet.
Spiders are the best 💕
"I been going around and around in a circle , but my heart wasn't in it ." LOL Holmes you card . ^_^

I love this movie. Gale Sondergard was an underrated actress in her day, and the bits of comic relief are great fun. One problem, and it's the teacher in me that causes me to point this out, but they keep referring to spiders as insects, when in actuality they are arachnids.

@@ettaalston-burgess5967 I feel your pain. It annoys me when Capital letters are not used at the beginning of names. When the cast list are shown on screen .
@@ettaalston-burgess5967 not forget its chosen prey are human beings.ha. and it come from the unbongo river. Ha
@@nutcracker2916 . Funny, it annoys me when words are capitalized for no reason, which happens very frequently in comments sections, & which you yourself did. You complain that the actors' names are not capitalized in the movie's opening credits, but whether that is actually improper usage of capitals is questionable, as when the subject is a form of art (as films are) it is usually considered permissable to break rules of grammar or other rules. Indeed, such breaking of rules is not only allowed in the arts, it is generally considered necessary (to varying degrees) in 20th c. western art. Not capitalising proper names in the film's credits is what's known as poetic license-- that is, knowingly breaking rules in order to create a work of art, and these Sherlock Holmes films are considered art.
Where so many commenters online learned the rules re: capitalization is puzzling, but in school no one is taught that it's proper English usage to capitalize ordinary nouns. Nor is it proper to capitalize words merely to emphasize them. Using capital letters can be very tricky & it differs some depending on whether someone is English (or British) or American (or Canadian, etc.), but as a general rule nouns are capitalized when it's a proper name, but not capitalized when it's an ordinary noun. Titles (Mr, Sir, King, Captain, Senator, etc.) are capitalized only when used along with a proper name but as a rule are not capitalized when the proper name isn't given. Of course any noun or other term used as the first word of a sentence is capitalized, but common nouns (also called improper nouns, as opposed to proper nouns such as formal or proper names) are seldom capitalized otherwise.
My 5th grade English teacher would've been mortified to see how common it has become to capitalize nouns. I'll never forget her admonishing me for spelling the color 'gray' as 'gray', telling me sternly in front of the whole class that it is spelled 'gray' only when it's a proper name. At that time (prehistoric) the color was spelled 'gray' in Am. English dictionaries, was spelled 'grey' in English dictionaries, but either spelling was permissible in the US. Most teachers back then were much stricter about English usage & spelling. I was too embarrassed to ever again think of using the Am. English version of any such terms involving 'a' & 'e'.

And not an insect as the 'entomologist' claimed. When he said "human beings as chosen prey" I laughed out loud. No entomologist nor Sherlock Holmes would call a spider an insect.
