Synopsis :- On a flight to New York for an annual police convention, Chan encounters his old Scotland Yard friend, Hugh Drake (Frederick Worlock). Drake is now a member of military intelligence trying to track down what he believes is a sabotage ring led by a Paul Narvo. A bomber and its pilots crashed the day before. Chan offers his assistance.
Chan is welcomed at the airport by New York Police Inspector Vance (Donald McBride) and, to Chan's surprise, his number two son Jimmy Chan (Sen Yung).
Chan goes to see Drake the next day at the apartment of George Kirby (Ricardo Cortez), where a dinner party is in progress. He finds his friend dead of poison gas in Drake's library, where he had gone to do some work. Drake's briefcase, containing all the information he had gathered about the sabotage ring, is missing. The window is latched, so Chan concludes one of the guests is responsible. Chan discovers that Drake asked that his Oxford classmate Herbert Fenton (Melville Cooper), actress June Preston and Ralph Percy, chief designer at the Metropolitan Aircraft Corporation, be invited to the party. Kirby himself is the company president. The lost bomber crashed at the company's plant. Also present is stockbroker Keith Jeffery (John Sutton). A servant (Clarence Muse) reports chemist David Elliot (Robert Lowery) insisted on seeing Drake, so he showed him in.
Chan learns that Preston also spoke with Drake that night, on behalf of a friend, Patricia West (Marjorie Weaver). West, it turns out, married Narvo in India. When she found out Narvo was involved in sabotage, she fled, only to be pursued by her husband and his assistant, Ramullah.
Ramullah is eventually tracked down, with West's help, and taken into custody. (During a police lineup of Indians, Shorty McCoy, aka "The Canarsie Kid", [Shemp Howard] is revealed to be a faker, not a fakir.) Before Ramullah can be questioned, however, he is shot and killed. West narrowly avoids the same fate.
A coatroom attendant shows up and states Drake checked his briefcase at the club where he works. Chan and Vance wait to see who will claim it. It is Boggs, Kirby's butler. He claims that Kirby left him a note instructing him to get the briefcase. Upon close inspection, Chan concludes it is a forgery. He then discovers Kirby's body.

My Mom And I Loved These Old Murder Mysteries Charlie Chan Black/ White Classics! My Mom Is Gone To Be With The Lord, But These Movies Bring Alot Of Memories With My Mom! Thanks Mom! Love And Miss You Always! RIP MOM!!!
I never thought that I would be a Charlie Chan fan in my ...old...age, seeing I never was keen on this sort of B&W movies in younger years. Thankyou for giving me the opportunity to discover the charm of these 1940's B&W. films.
Grew up with these movies nice to go back to that time 😊😊
My mother loved Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan.😍🤩😍
Me too he is the true chan . I always hear the truest of sayings and thoughts.
She has good taste in actors
Only missing Mantan Moreland who was in later films.
@@lescobrandon3047 Mantan Moreland was a terrific comic actor in his own right, but he was out of place in CC movies. There was plenty of comic relief with Charlie's son.
Thank you for sharing. These were good movies in their day and still hold up today!
The best TV detective of all time - Detective Charlie Chan!
sure is
I love these movies
Love the Optimo Panama Hat in the beginning! Ive owned 4 of those over the years! I want another this summer. "Optimo" is the style name should anyone order one. They're still around. 2024
If u want something really classy, order a straw Borsalino from Italy through Ben-Craft Hatters in Brooklyn, NY.
Great classic movie 🍿 your won’t see again I only watch classic movies no TV thanks 😊
Same here.
I can't believe that Shemp Howard was not given a credit on this film.
Shemp Howard played in many movies after he left The Three Stooges. He didn't get credits because he was so easily recognized in Hollywood!
@@richardhincemon9423 HE was in an Abbott and Costello movie. I think it was a late 40s one where A&C go to Africa (forgot the title) as a goofy guide and rifle bearer.
You know what's even funnier? The guy who plays Birmingham was offered a role in the three stooges after Shemp passed away by none other than Moe Howard himself, but the studio put a stop to it and put Joe Besser in instead... and I believe Joe Besser was the worst Stooge ever.
@@Hotshotter3000 s h e m p Howard and Joe besser both played in the movie Africa screams with Abbott and Costello. S h e m p Howard replaced curly after curly suffered a massive stroke in 1946. Mantan Moreland was briefly considered for the role in The Three Stooges after s h e m p died in 1955 but that role went to Joe besser who retired in 1958 to take care of his wife who was severely ill. S h e m p Howard played in the first Three Stooges movie Soup To Nuts when they were known as Ted Healy and the Stooges back in 1930. Louis Feinberg known professionally as Larry f i n e who played a fireman in that movie later on joined the Three Stooges comedy Act. It was s h e m p that recommended mantan Moreland as a replacement in The Three Stooges to his brother Moe Howard after being impressed with his comedy routine on the movie set of The Strange Case of Dr RX 1942.

What a sharp clear print of this old film! Thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed it
the Art Deco has always caught my eye, it's almost a character itself
That’s one thing I like about Miami.
Art Deco was the style of the time, and it is quite the style.

I loved this when I was a kid in early 60's, it was kinda goofy but funny.
As someone who was born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn I was amazed to see that Shemp Howard was as well.
I love all the old movies Thanks to u tube
Not old movies...CLASSIC FILMS! Sounds so much better. 😀
Love Charlie Chan series 👍👍👍
Shemp Howard as Shorty!
love this video..one of his best....great acting...thanks for showing it
Shemp Howard from the 3 Stooges at 30:00 as a Hindu in the police lineup.
Thanks! I thought I recognized him.
Sidney is the best Chan.
love these old black movies, more than ever before
I think you mean black & white movies.
3:58 The airliner here is a DC-2; you can tell from the smaller tail and thinner fuselage. The DC-3 was essentially a wide-body version; it was built in such large numbers during World War II that it''s not that hard to find some of them still flying commercially. Anthony Fokker saw that the DC-2 was superior to anything his companies were building, so he became a purchasing agent for Douglas. This led to a KLM DC-2 taking second place in an air race from Britain to Australia--while flying it's normal schedule along the way! Japan was also impressed, and the DC-2 was manufactured there under license, which led to some American Douglas Aircraft destroying some Japanese Douglas aircraft during the war.
interesting!
The first and last clips are DC-3 DST and middle one is DC-2 mismatch.
@@cturdo The DC3 was a sleeper successor to the DC2 with a 'fatter' fuselage that would accommodate sleeping-bunks above the seats: most DC3 versions dispensed with the bunks and were used for ordinary passenger- or cargo service.
@@None-zc5vg Yes I am aware. NC16001 was one of the early AA birds.
Love them long seats.
This is one of my favorite CC movies
I owned 42 of them.
Fun stuff
Great! Do they include the TV series as well. Did not know there were so many.
I didn't know there were that many either. I have 24 but most are old VCR recordings from TV. Not very good quality but better than nothing. Am happy to find them online now. I don't like the TV series as much.
@@TK-jc9by There were 44 in the original 1931 - 1949 run, but 4 of them (films 1, 3, 4, and 5) are lost films. There may yet be hope for examples being found, since there was a Betty Boop episode found in Russia in 2019 which then got restored, after it hadn't been seen for about 80 years. But so far, we have 40 in the original run. Though there are a few other movies after that, which I haven't seen.
The 1931 - 1937 movies all have Warner Oland in them as Charlie Chan. Among these are the lost films.
The 1938 - 1946 movies all have Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan.
The 1947 - 1949 episode have Roland Winters, who seemed OK as Charlie Chan, but not in the first time he played the role. Besides, the 6 that he was in were all low budget Monogram Pictures movies. I can't expect a whole lot.
There's also one or two Mr. Moto films that were originally meant to be Charlie Chan films, and one Charlie Chan movie that was originally a Mr. Moto film:
Mr. Moto's Gamble - Originally meant to be shot in January 1938 as a Charlie Chan film.
Mr. Moto in Danger Island - I'm not sure of this one.
Charlie Chan in Panama - I'm not sure which Mr. Moto film this one would have been, but I did listen to a documentary (included on disc) that it originally was meant to be a Mr. Moto film.
Mr. Moto was portrayed by Peter Lorre.
"She who study Charlie Chan gain much knowledge as 🕵️♀️ detective." Look for the 1972 tv movie "The return of Charlie Chan" in color and starring Ross Martin, it's terrible, but, you appreciate all the other Chan's that much more. Also. 1957-58,tv show,39 episodes, starring J.Carrol Naish, not as half good. All on YT.😅
Do you believe those airliner seats in the opening scene? On today's planes, they try to cram three passengers into that same space. And back then the passengers actually got a (small) meal rather than a 1-ounce bag of pretzels and a soft drink.
And u could smoke!
@@jessewolf7649 In 1987 I took a trip down to Nevada. The seats were so narrow that the three of us in one row were rubbing shoulders and could barely move. I later complained to a man on the ground and said that the seats were cramped. He replied that "Oh, the seats aren't cramped. That's the new style." Just wait until the next generation of airliners comes out and carries 500 passengers in the space we ride in today. 💣
Great' a new Chan movie Thanks
I used to watch these movies when I was a young teenager visiting my Dad who lived in Liverpool, more than 40 years ago. I was devastated when I found out Charlie Chan was not a real Chinese person😂 Oh for days of innocence. 24/01/2024 @ 22:00 UK🙏💐THANKS
I love this show. I watch. This show. Every. Day.

When it came to solving crimes,Jimmy Chan was as good as Barney Fife!
Number two son 😆
Number four son is the bookworm, Eddie. He's pretty good at solving crimes like his dad
@@frances4797 Eduard or Edward*. He's the verbose, intellectual type. Just mind, he may or may not have a penchant for falling asleep on the job *if* he has Pajamas on. But he does want to be of good service to his Father, and he doesn't rush around like Jimmy often would.
The airport scenes are at one of three possible locations, given the verifiable usage of all three in movies such as this. Santa Monica Airport, Burbank and Van Nuys.
I think this is Grand Central Airport in Glendale now a Disney Campus.
Nahhhh, it's actually Tempelhof Flughafen in Berlin.
I don' think this movie had that kind of a budget.@@leelarson107
Just popped into comments to ID Shemp Howard but I was predictably late. 😂

That DC-3 is bigger on the inside than on the outside!
Chan’s son messes up everything
That's the POINT. He's there for a touch of comic relief.
Ever notice that most of these older murder mysteries have exactly three victims? Is there a quota system?

Number 2 son cannot learn to keep his trap shut. He never uses one word when five will do.
Jimmy Chan always reminds me of a wonderful cat I adopted from the Ottawa humane society. Despite, Cassidy's small size he had absolutely no fear when it came to fighting! He would just jump into the middle of any fray! 😊
Round up all the hindus😂😂😂😂…funniest line in the movie.
Great movie, but the sound
can't watched those stretcher out movies to fit screen, why do they do that
I couldn't agree more! A good digital transfer if only at 720) spoiled by stretching to 16:9 format. I used to think it was of a lack of knowledge about aspect ratio, or conditioning from using tiny screens and i it could be that. But now I think it is the default settings in the software, coupled with a lack of understanding about formats or possibly using an app that has a free version with limited options. Anyway, it is a shame.
@@fred1barb I can't wait to see your videos in their proper format. When can I expect them?
@@perniciouspete4986 There are two things I do not do. One is to make videos in the wrong format and the other is to distribute them to people ignorant about the difference. The videos that I do make are in that native format of the camera sensor, usually 16:9 but sometimes 1:1. You might not like them as they are made at either very low framerates or a high frame rates and in both cases heavily processed in software to get a single image from dozens or even thousands of frames.
The train seats shown at the start look like booth seats at an old restaurant. I can smell the chinese food.
I believe they are airplane seats.

Why is it "Fox?"
?? Not sure what you’re asking. This is a TCF (20th Century-Fox Film) a result of 1935 merger of Darryl Zanuck’s 20th Century Pictures and Wm. Fox’s Fox Film. When TCF was no longer interested in Chan series the rights were bought by Sidney Toler and the series was produced at Monogram (Allied Artists).
If I didn't read it wrong, then it was "Fox Films" before it was "20th Century Fox."

You beat me to it Sneha as I wholeheartedly agree with you! I do not mind the other son played by Benson Fong as I can tolerate him, but the son played by Sen Yung is overbearing! Now whether that is down to the actor himself or whether it is more to do with the script, we shall never know, but suffice to say, although I truly enjoy watching the Charlie Chan series, I despair when I see Sen Yung's name in the opening credits.

The racism in old films is astounding. Women were dissed a lot also. Agatha Christie works were filled with racial slurs.
So what? Now you got institutionalized racism against just one race alone. You know, the one blamed for all the problems. Specifically the men.
Agatha Christie was a woman. Doesn't that automatically make her immune to any criticism? After all, criticizing a woman is 'sexist', isn't it?
Your line of 'logic' (illogic) is crumbling.
They are ALL racially derogative! The yellowface and blackface era were still going on. The fact that no Asian actor was actually portraying Charlie Chan says it all. The movies are well done but the rascism is unbelievable at times

@@dtaylor939 No I am not. Please educate yourself on TCM refer to their original programming regarding the yellowface era. Highly informative. These movies are good but racism is the main theme.
