Synopsis :- In the beginning of the film, detective Charlie Chan is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, along with his son, Jimmy, and the Rio chief of police, Chief Souto, to arrest singer Lola Dean, whom Chan suspects killed a man in Honolulu. After a performance, Lola’s boyfriend, Carlos, asks her to marry him, which she accepts. Her personal assistant, Helen Ashby, then reminds Lola she has an appointment with a Hindu psychic, Marana. Lola visits the psychic, who puts her in a semi-comatose state using coffee and cigarettes laced with a special natural herb. Lola reveals in this state that she did kill a man, Manuel Cardozo, after he refused to marry her in Honolulu. The psychic records the conversation. When Lola wakes up, the psychic tells her what she told him, but assures her that it will be kept confidential between them. On the way home, a worried Lola convinces Carlos to elope instead of marry at a later date. When she arrives home, she begins packing.

Reno still has an arch over Virginia Street proclaiming it's the "Biggest Little City in the World". The last time I remember seeing it myself was in 1978 when I visited my sister and her kids. It wasn't quite as little then, but forty years before when this movie was being made it only had around 20,000 people.
1:02.20 Tonopah is a real place--actually two because there's another one in Arizona. Been there too. A lot of old F-117 drivers should remember it because the Air Force based them outside Tonopah when they weren't supposed to exist yet.
My parents were married in Reno after Dad served in Europe after WW2. Both are gone after being married 70+ years

Another great Charlie Chan film. Very good story, writing, well directed. Tyler is growing on me since the last film. Thought he was more serious than Orland but he delivers Chan's comedy with dry wit. Good to see no. 2 son gets more air time with Pop. Do all of Charlie Chan's sons' become detectives? o_O

It is peculiar that the copyright date is 1938 but there is a California Worlds Fair license plate on the car at the ghost town and the San Francisco Worlds Fair was in 1939 and 1940.
I guess this film is 1939 not 1938.

Used to be one of my biggest complaints on YT . You can fix this by installing the AdBlocker for YT Browser Extension, though. Has been a "lifesaver" for me. Works GREAT on Chrome, but not so much on the MS Browser, Edge.

I'll take Phyllis Brooks anytime, villain or heroine.
It was enjoyable but there was a serious flaw. They never resolved the issue of the son borrowing a friend's car and it being stolen. They should have addressed that at the end, as that is a serious issue. They could have said it was recovered, or that Charlie would reimburse the friend. They should not have left that hanging.
