Synopsis ;- Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) gets to watch a performance that's to die for. For seven years, opera star Gravelle (Boris Karloff) has been locked in an insane asylum, his identity a mystery - even to himself. But when his memory unexpectedly returns, he begins to recall that his wife and her lover tried to murder him - and now he's determined to make them face the music. Gravelle escapes from the asylum and makes his way to the San Marco opera house and begins hiding out in the various rooms and passageways. Soon, members of the opera company are being murdered one by one.
Chan soon investigates the killings and despite the presence of Gravelle, there are other suspects who may be the real killer. They suspects, excluding Gravelle, include Lilli Rochelle, the opera company's prima donna who has been having a secret affair with Enrico Barelli, the baritone; Mr. Whitely, Madame Rochelle's husband who has warned Barelli to stay away from his wife; Anita Barelli, the opera company's number two soprano who has learned of her husband's affair with Lilli Rochelle; and Phil Childers, the fiancée of Lilli's unacknowledged daughter who has been refused permission to marry the daughter.
Clues found by Chan to apprehend the killer include a torn newspaper, a charred note, a heel mark on a newspaper picture, and a bloodstained belt. Among the questions asked are who has been threatening Lilli Rochelle's life, the mystery man in Barelli's dressing room before he is murdered, and why does Chan insist that the opera be performed twice in one evening?

Anyone notice the "opera" was composed by the great Oscar Levant? Levant was a boy genius who orchestrated George and Ira Gershwin's compositions. After George died and Ira moved back to New York, Oscar stayed in Hollywood to compose for films. His work with the Gershwins made him the leading interpreter of their music while his recording of George's Piano Concerto and Second Rhapsody became must have recordings. Eventually he moved to the front of the camera, starring with Gene Kelley as a struggling composer in An American In Paris.

The line, "This Opera will go on tonight, even if Frankenstein himself walks in." is a great Inside Joke, since Boris Karloff played The Monster in the first 2 Frankenstein Movies & also is usually called Frankenstein, even though technically, he's The Monster & is not really Frankenstein, which was The Role Of Colin Clive.

Fred Mertz is a difficult image to conjour as a widower in a household full of dirty laundry. Not to mention that troop of boys abd a dog* tracking muddy footprints into the kitchen from the out of doors just after the floor was swept and mopped clean.

Best thing FOX Films bought to the Silver Screen, Charlie Chan. 20th Century Pictures was wise to continue the series, after taking over FOX in 1934/35,but alas the studio cut back many series to concentrate on high dollar films, late 1938/39. Sidney Tolar bought the rights and moved to Monogram Pictures.

Yes, he did play an Asian (Chinese) detective. He was "Mr. Wong" Those movies are on YT. Peter Lorre also played a Japanese detective, "Mr. Moto". Those were stopped after the hostilities with Japan broke out.
No Asian actor ever played CC because of discrimination. For those who claim that it's no big deal, it's just "acting", you make a slightly decent point, but it was WHY no Asian every represented an Asian, NOT because of any "acting" skill, but because it would have meant that a white actor didn't get the part.

Anyone else see a HUGE problem with the "math" on Lili's daughter who wanted to get married?
Her father was in an insane asylum for 7 years after a fire at the theater. Charlie Chan asked the girl when she last saw her father. She said " I was four years old when a fire broke out at the theater". So four plus seven would make her 11 years old. Her boyfriend wanted permission from Lili to marry her but she refused. But 4 years and 7 years would make her only 11 years old while she's sitting there wanting to get married. Underage indeed. This was a huge mistake in the script.
