You are so right, GEORGE E. Schaub! Their language proficiency and speaking delivery are enviable, indeed. I grew up watching old black and white reruns of Perry Mason, every day after school. I enjoyed them, but didn't appreciate the writing excellence until I rewatched them in my forties. How gratifying it was to hear Perry Mason's language so rich in legal terminology and flawlessly correct grammar, qualities that escaped me when I was ten! The acting may be corny and contrived, but the language and social graces in some of these old films are really admirable. Thank you for drawing attention to it!

Remember that Conan Doyle was writing Sherlock Holmes stories until 1927, only twelve years before the start of the Second World War. Although those stories were set in earlier times, the latest story featuring Holmes was set in 1914, 25 years before the start of the Second World War. That would be like having a character last seen in 1999 appearing in a film today. Not a great leap for the imagination. Nobody bothers about James Bond being out of date - he first appeared in print in 1952!

Truly fun propaganda films; Rathbone provide a unique take on the opium addict detective. Yes - Holmes was an opium addict in the original books written in 1887. If you look closely, the films are littered with hints of Holmes drug use. It was part of the beauty and charm of the character. But, unfortunately, today's fans prefer a sanitized, white washed version of the world. With all the humanity removed from art; "No .... sex" - How completely ridiculous and sad. I grew up during the '50s and 60s; I'd run home from school just to watch the Sherlock Holmes series, often repeated. Basil Rathbone portrayed the Sheriff of Nottingham in the movie; he was a superb fencer and had to carry others during fencing scenes. But once I saw Jeremy Brett... I was hooked to his series. He was the ultimate (yes, the very best) Sherlock Holmes, and his Dr Watson never acted like a bungling, forgetful stooge, after all, Watson was once a boxer and former officer in the Royal Army.

Great, great Sherlock Holmes movie, "Sherlock Holmes and The Voice of Terror" (1942). Nobody could recite Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's superb "East Wind" speech by Holmes at the end of "His Last Bow" like Basil Rathbone! I wish Rathbone had renewed his film and radio contracts to play Holmes many more times than he did! Although in fairness to Rathbone, he played Holmes in 14 films (2 for 20th Century Fox and 12 for Universal Studios) and on approximately 200 radio shows and two or three times on or off-Broadway in a play. But he was understandably fed up with being typecast as Holmes. He and Nigel Bruce were the very best Holmes and Watson!

To Rathbone's credit he was for some time disappointed that his portrayal of Holmes typecast him and was quite despondent about the effect on his acting career despite having been a doyen of the theatre for years. I have read however that he bumped into a fan once who congratulated him and Rathbone graciously explained his feelings only to be told that these films had helped a great many people through the most difficult of times. After that encounter, apparently, Rathbone never complained about his superlative portrayal of Doyle's detective. Spectacular film. Excellent cast. Rathbone is perfect (though, he is always a bit of a ham actor). Bruce as Dr. Watson is terrific, I so enjoy the way he mumbles to himself. As a team of actors they are perfection. There are many great moments in this excellently written script. I particularly enjoyed the one when Holmes and Watson are leaving 221B Baker street and Sherlock takes his Deer Stalker hat from the coat tree. Dr. Watson says, "Holmes, you promised." Holmes replaces the Deer Stalker and takes his Fedora instead. This for me is brilliant. While the Deer Stalker is perfect, as a descriptive in the novels, in the 1940's films it would appear as somewhat clownish. This simple dialogue suggests and explains that. A moment of great film is worth a thousand words. Evelyn Akers, as Peggy, is altogether wonderful in this giving a fine performance, and beautiful as well The cinematography is excellent, and often powerful, in this excellent print. There is a series of extreme close ups of the characters faces, a stunning device. Powerful on my computer screen. Imagine them gigantic on the full screen in a movie theatre. Wow! Double wow!! That would knock me out of my seat, and I prefer to sit in the last row. Did I like this film? You bet I did!

Ann excellent film. Light and dark in black and white. Lovely Kitty, hardface villains and heroes. One of the best of the series with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

How is it that the most beautiful actresses seem to have come from the 30's and 40's? The Holmes movies are full of them!

“What do you make of it Watson?” “Bullet wound!” “Congratulations “, lol! 😂 The interplay between those two is unequalled anywhere in film. And they were close off camera as well, I read recently. I first watched some of these old classics when I was a kid in the sixties and they used to play on TV on Saturday afternoons. I recently rediscovered them on CZcams. I never seem to tire of watching them.
