If I had to be on a desert island I'd take the Rathbone Holmes films with me.
I'd take you then you could do all the work of finding a tv to show them on!
My favourite story of theRathbone films.
Don’t forget the viewing device with sufficient energy.
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot my login password. I would love any tips you can offer me!

The pacing on all of the Sherlock Holmes movies is brilliantly paced....never forced and always relaxed and the dialogue spoken is eloquent with so many well chosen phrases being articulated by the great Basil Rathbone.
Sherlock Holmes movies are some of my favorites ever - especially the ones starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce!! I grew up in the '50s and became a big fan then. It's refreshing to be reminded of what good acting is and that a movie can be wonderfully entertaining without sex, foul language, nudity and all of the other rot that has negatively impacted society all over the world.
As Holmes used to say, "Right you are Watson". I too am from the same generation as you.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Yesssss!! Fully agree!
There is nothing wrong with sex and nudity, as Rathbone confirmed.
Never tire of the Rathbone-Bruce chemistry. Am able to watch them over and over again in sheer delight!
I'm exactly the same. I wish there was more with basil rathbone. The best sherlock Holmes by far. Xx
Absolutely, they were an Awesome team!!
Absolutely the best pairing in cinema history.
@@MB-cx2ks : Can't dispute this.
Just saw my first one at 59 I wish there were more with basil
I swear to God you could never repeat such good film and actors as from that era just totally classic
The actor who portrayed Dr. Watson’s friend Stinky, also portrayed one of the scientists stranded up in the North Pole and facing the evil alien “carrot” in the 1951 sci-fi classic, “The Thing from Another World.”
Basil Rathbone could actually play the piano and violin in real life and was a very accomplished musician
Nigel Bruce was also a very very good singer
He was also an expert swordsman and was fencing champion of the South African army.
He also was a professional swordsman. Excellent at the Art of Fencing. His sword fighting scenes with Errol Flynn were a pleasure to watch in every swashbuckling movie he made!
@@slackdaddy1912 He once complained he was tempted to run Flynn through for showing up for a dueling scene 🎬 drunk as a skunk 🦨. He was an Olympic level fencing 🤺 champion and could have done it easily.
I love Doyle's stories. Holmes is iconic. His making sense of seeming nonsense iis just the best.
Rathbone was also was a professional swordsman. Excellent at the Art of Fencing. His sword fighting scenes with Errol Flynn were a pleasure to watch in every swashbuckling movie he made!
Patricia Morrison died several years ago in 2018 at age 103 one of the oldest if not the oldest entertainers!
'It's Holmes, Sherlock Holmes.' Yes, Rathbone is to Holmes what Connery is to Bond. A superb HD copy - thanks for sharing!
Hi
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce complement each other so perfectly as Holmes and Watson and are such wonderful actors to boot. I regularly find myself saying, 'I will just watch it one more time', and that magnetic appeal is to me is the test of excellence. Of all the portrayals of Holmes and Watson none have succeeded to the extent that they have.
They are indeed the quintessential 'Holmes & Watson!'
These Rathbone Holmes' movies are incredible.
These will always be classic Sherlock Holmes movies Peter Cushing also in my opinion did a good job as Sherlock Holmes I have seen his classic Sherlock Holmes.
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the best! Patricia Morison is just beautiful.
Thank you, PF, for finding this excellently restored version of this video. Strikingly beautiful! Ditto all the complimentary comments on Rathbone, Bruce, and the production values.
9:00 Watson reading Strand Magazine where Sherlock Holmes was published.
Love the way everyone is so polite to each other.
Yeah, that used to be an American trait. But that was before our time. I hope those times come back.
Yeah. I'm mean and rotten and I don't like nothin' or nobody, which means I fit right into today's world.
@@MsBettyRubble it was by no means an exclusively American trait,, although Americans where known for laughing and smiling much more than their British cousins. Germans, however have always been considered very brisk hahah

Discovering this in 2022, gr8 stuff! Dr Watson is a dead set legend!
Love these vedios of Sherlock Holmes (Rathbone) and Watson.
Thank you so showing them.

The best parts for me are Nigel Bruce, he's so funny at times.
I admire a man who has enough self-confidence to go by the nickname Stinky and proudly display his collection of music boxes.
why is he called stinky

Rathbone & Bruce are a wonderful party and create a truely gentle chemistry between Holmes and Watson - no unesessary banter, splendid. Also: The proof that cigarettes CAN save lifes.
One of the best stories and the female criminal was so clever in her disguises, as was Holmes when he disguised himself, she could change her voice in seconds, more than a match for Holmes and such a lovely face, she really was stunning, she lived to be 103, she must have had a wonderful life.
Patricia Morison is great in this movie. She passed away only last year at the age of 103.

Here's the thing: all these many years later, every time someone else plays Sherlock Holmes he is evaluated by comparison to Basil Rathbone.
Wayne S Like Lugosi as Dracula.
Precisely. The way to know the definitive actor for any character is that everyone else is compared to them.
Of course, because basil is that good
And Rightly so...
It might be a tv version, but Jeremy Brett is undoubtedly the Holmes to compare with. He only did the Conan Doyle stories, and he did all of them. Brilliantly. Rathbone did very few original stories, which were Americanised, including the use of lots of guns. Not to mention the regular use of the term ‘scotch’ when referring to Scots. They are entertaining films, which I always enjoy, just not very true to Conan Doyle’s intentions.
In the book ,Watson is smart and works well with Holmes.
I have had the privilege of viewing this movie several times over the years. I appreciate the visual and audio clarity which makes viewing and hearing it at this time an added pleasure. The plot, pacing, and acting by the primary and supporting cast add so much to the entertainment value. Thank you so much for the opportunity of viewing it in such high quality.

Dear PizzaFlix, had it not been for you, I would have never completed my Sherlock Rathbone Collection. Let alone your uploads are of the finest quality! Thank you so much for sharing! Cheers :)
I've seen all the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies, and it always makes me smile when Rathbone "plays" the violin. He makes no attempt at all to make it look real. And speaking of continuity errors: the owner of the gift shop is not wearing nail polish, but in the closeup of her holding Holmes' card her nails are polished. Love these movies.
It's really really hard to simulate violin playing. As a musician myself, I have seen much worse. And I think most of the blame goes to the production for not synching his movements better with the soundtrack.
Nail polish. Wow! How observant. I shall watch out for that.
Good catch.
And Holmes played the violin, not the fiddle. Same instrument, different countries, different styles, different origins. London and the Appalachian Mountains are very far apart!
Allyson Lawrence Jeremy Brett did play violin in school. If you watch him at the end of The Six Napoleons, his hands move perfectly.
Rathbone had a great sense of fun,and was not too snooty to allow himself to be taken less serious-he made 2 appearances on the Spike Jones Spotlight review radio shows around 1948 as Spike served up his usual zany but hysterically-funny comedy with his musical depreciational pals egging him on-Sir Fredrick Gas,Doodles Weaver,Georgie etc..
Watson & Holmes are a great pair of kindred spirits...heart brothers indeed true!
I can watch these movies over and over and never get tired of them. Since Stinky was Dr. Watson's friend, I thought it odd he didn't mention it to the inspector when they found the body. He just said Stinky was Holmes' client. Anyway, Rathbone and Bruce are the best Holmes and Watson.
13:25 The singing rabbit would make for a great scarer for scaring crooks away. 13:42 Watson: "Stupid thing, singing rabbit." That made me laugh!
Love these , Basil Rathbone makes a Brilliant Holmes. Actually with a name like Rathbone sounds like a good detective by it's self. I love the suspense of the orchestra at the start

Basil rathbone was, and still is the best actor that ever played sherlock holmes.
Basil Rathbone will always be my favorite Sherlock. He was charming. Others tried too hard to portray Holmes as "difficult" and condescending. it's so off-putting.
Yes, I agree, entirely. I think he IS Sherlock Holmes...
The character is difficult. Rathbone is condescending and insults Watson all the time, Watson is just too slow in these depictions to pick up on it. Not only that but every time he compliments someone it is as the point where they least deserve the compliment.
Basil Rathbone had the 'Wit,' & was the smoothest Sherlock Holmes ever.
t Bone He feels very accurate to the Sherlock Holmes portrayed in the texts I love it

Kept you out of trouble too, pity those days are gone 😷
This final movie featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce is definitely one of the best written and most suspenseful in the series, and Patricia Morison makes an excellent villainess. I recognize the police commissioner, whose name was Ian Wolfe, from a couple other Sherlock Holmes movies. There were in fact several actors who played multiple roles in the series, but I doubt that too many of the public viewers caught on to the fact that quite a few of the actors were being recycled in different roles.
Agreed…

American house and storefronts. Cars are usually right-hand drives, to drive on the left, as they should in the U.K. However the bus shown is left-hand drive with the front entrance on the right, which would never exist in England.

mohammad davoudian ok
I agree that Basil Rathbone portrayed Sherlock Holmes beautifully but I always took exception to Nigel Bruce's portrayal of Watson. Watson wasn't a bumbling fool like made out by Bruce, he was a very capable former military man who could take care of himself and Holmes too for that matter. Nigel Bruce was a very good actor its just his portrayal of Watson that I didn't like.
@@patrickholland6848 I agree with your assessment of the Dr. Watson portrayal in these movies with Rathbone and Bruce. I have seen your term "bumbling fool" and also "buffoon" used over & over to describe this portrayal of Dr. Watson. I think Rathbone did an outstanding job with Holmes and better than all others...except Jeremy Brett. But I have a hard time watching these movies with Rathbone & Bruce precisely because of the Watson portrayal...it diminishes greatly what Rathbone brings to the role of Holmes. Now I really , really like the Dr. Watson character in the movies with Jeremy Brett...smart, capable, can keep his mouth shut when he needs to...a very good partner to Holmes.
Try this excellent portrayal of Watson... m.czcams.com/video/lEk6aElkfT4/video.html#searching
@@patrickholland6848 amen to that! i was insulted by the silly goofy stupid ignoramous that nigel bruce and the writers made watson out to be there is no way he could ever have been a dr and even holmes had to tell him what was wrong most of the movies. just terrible, i prefer the watson played on the tv series in america the holmes was almost exact to rathbone but the watson was intelligent and a good match for holmes. also rathbone's holmes made fun of watson always tricked him and made him do all the heavy labor and never helped him and he made him seem more of a fool than he was and that bothered me too!

Nigel Bruce has the perfect barely audible grumble.
Enjoyed every moment.

41:20 Classic Watson line: "What on earth is this outlandish place?" lol
Such a shame that Bruce's Watson was always portrayed as a bit of a buffoon considering that he was supposed to be not only a fully trained Doctor, but also an ex-military officer and a writer of at least moderate success.
I wonder if the Great Hitchcock saw this film. The scene in Dr Samuel Johnsons House when the were ascending the stairs was a little Hitchcockian, Thanks for the upload. Just love these Rathbone and Bruce portrayals of Holmes and Watson. Spiffing!!!!!
BLODWYN DAVIES good eye!

What a wonderful Sherlock Holmes film. Fast-paced, with just the right amount of humor and intrigue. I was put off at the outset however, by the old lech Stinky, who met his demise. My favorite scene was the tavern frequented by the washed up actors, and the song and dance. Delightful my good fellow. I shall recall the music box tune as well. Splendid.
Geezermann See. Bye
Love these guys. Talk about a perfect acting match!
You know, I really think this may be the highest quality Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes film. It works in references to Holmes' canonical adventures, showcases Watson's writing skill (through it's effect on others, if not by actually showing it), has some very touching moments between Holmes and Watson, has reasonably clever villains with an original enough plot, and on the side of the heroes this film really exudes the warmth that came to characterize The Baker Street Dozen in a different way than many of the numerous other portrayals of the detective and company.
Talitha Costello f
Not quite the highest quality film in the series. Dressed To Kill is actually the second iteration of the original ACD story "The Six Napoleons". The first one was 1944's The Pearl Of Death, which, in my view, was closer to the original and a bit better, both for the tension level and one of the few times Holmes gets tripped up by his own ego -which his antagonist takes advantage of twice. But this one was an upswing from the very cheap and unimaginative Terror By Night, does indeed feature some of the best character scenes between Rathbone and Bruce, and was a better movie for the series to go out on than its immediate predecessor film.
This one is my favourite - thank you
I like Nigel Bruce , he played in a movie with Cary Grant called Suspicion .
“I don’t think I could have done it entirely without Mr. Holmes’ help.”

I'm very much enjoying re-watching these for the first time in years. Rathbone's intensity as Holmes is mesmerizing... but I very much wish they hadn't portrayed Watson as a buffoon! It gets rather tiresome and makes one wonder why Holmes would put up with such an inept partner.

Agreed!!! Watson is a doctor and former soldier after all....and it's obvious they're not trying to play it off like sly as a fox like Columbo. 😄 luv Peter Falk!!
And thank you btw. These are always my go-to movies, 🌸🍀
It's possible that Watson is adding comic relief which is the inclusion of a humorous character, scene, or witty dialogue in an otherwise serious work, often to relieve tension.
@@ccsitaround Im sure that's the intent , especially considering the era in which it was filmed. He's over the top goofy but also a pleasant chap.....considering Sherlock is so serious most of the time. Dry English humor is my favorite!!! 😁

Unbelievable how attractive the lead actress was, even until her older age.
The quality is so much better than later versions, like the 50s
That might have something to do with different film substrates such as Cellulose Nitrates and Safety films or tri-acetate ...all of which have pros and cons regarding deterioration and image qualities.
Ladies Fashions were elegant
Absolutely well said
Patricia Morison died at 103. She was a popular actress and a very popular pinup during WW2. She never married and unfortunately is one of many movie stars from the 40s who are now mostly forgotten.
I also loved the fashion of this time. My grandmother and I would talk about fashions of this time and later. She didn't care for the styles of this time though this is a sample of what she wore when she was a young girl. She would always say that she was born too early and I was born too late.
Patricia Morison must go down as one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the screen - with Hedy Lamar to whom she bears a remarkable resemblance. One of the best SHs.
In New York on Saturdays, I would also watch Sherlock Holms movies all the time!🤓😝🤤
Thanks, I really enjoyed this movie, and such clarity! 🤓
A very good black and white print.Thanks.
close to the end the villain throws a magic knife at holmes and it sticks in the wall by the mantle of the fireplace. but when watson gets up the stairs it is gone from the wall. amazing. nice to know they made these errors then and they still make them in movies today.
Yes, but Holmes was so very cool, he didn’t even flinch as that knife flew passed him. Rathbone was such a badass! 🤣🌈
Its possible the knife was indeed still in the wall...the unfortunate camera angle and the external wall which continues to extrude into the room ' ( creating a corner ) could easily camouflage the knife. That's why we don't see it..
Loved this! I noticed that the soundtrack sounded like The Wolfman in parts. Thanks for sharing!
