I love the warmth of the scene when Charlie reunites with his son in the hotel room. The little details, like the domestic familiarity of helping his dad with the coat and house robe, then kneeling to remove his shoes. The concern when he discovers someone tried to kill Charlie. A lovely little scene.
A reflection of the two actors great relationship. Keye called him pop in real life too, and Warner took him under his wing and acted as his mentor.
Keye Luke always spoke very highly of him.
When Warner died they offered Keye to continue with Toler, but he refused out of respect for his friend.
One of my favorite Hollywood stories.
I did not know that. They are my favorites too
1935, born in 1960 I love these back and white Chan movies, it's funny, as a young person I used to think this was so old, but now that I'm older I realize time slips by quickly, even 100 years isn't that long.
These Charlie Chan scripts are really rich and the actors are so solid. I really like Warner Oland as Charlie Chan.
Always preferred Sidney Toler myself but have really warmed - up to Warner Oland now. They're both very good in their own right. 👍
@@MichaelGunner123 Exactly.

😅
@@MichaelGunner123 Too bad we don't have movies 1, 3, 4, and 5 to judge the earlier works... But from what we do have, Warner Oland's takes come across as (mostly) more patient,* and less jaded. Especially considering the Shanghai movie starts with him playing Leap Frog with kids and singing to them.
* He does get angry at his assistant in the 2nd movie, "the Black Camel." Koshimo is his assistant, who opens a door as a wind beats down on it, and that blows a bunch of photograph pieces off a table. Charlie then says "Koshimo, you are Zebra." Koshimo asks what Charlie means, and Charlie then says "Sport model jackass!" - But that's the only time I know of Warner Oland's takes on Charlie Chan to be impatient.
He does a pretty good job, from what I understand he's Swedish.
Despite the explosions, high Tech, and the glitz of so many new movies, it can never Replace the amazing craftsmanship of plot, superb acting, character and relationship development that we see in the Charlie Chan movies.
The gentleman rose when lady approached the table ....ILOVE that
I've seen 5 people play Charlie Chan. Warner Oland is my favorite.
I've seen two. Plus Mr Wong and Mr moto.
Who are the 5 people please?

FOR A 1935 CLASSIC THIS IS ONE FOR THE BOOKS..GREAT ACTING AND A GREAT STORY LINE WITH A OUTSTANDING CAST..........CHARLIE PLAYED A GREAT PART....GRAND CLASSIC...

You can see the love between Warner Oland & Key Luke they got along very well when making these movies
Most definitely! They did work very well together and you can see it I this movie especially
@@marcsmolen339 so true Marc
Key Luke eventually played Charlie Chan in one of the later incarnations of the character.
@@censusgary I never saw it do you know the name of it?
@@censusgary He also played a younger Mr. Wong in Monogram's Charlie Chan wannabe series of 6 films that starred Boris Karloff in the first five w/Luke taking over for the last one. They're an entertaining but pale comparison to the Fox Chan's.
This was one of the better Charlie Chan movie. The dancing scene was outstanding.
I agree totally! The dance scene blew me away, lol, I actually watched the scene over because I thought they used a fake dummy the way the dancer was throw around. Mad respect for the actors and dancers in this classic movie
The dance was pretty amazing. I’ve never seen anything else quite like it.
The dancing was for the birds. I could live without it.
That dance scene was fantastic,
I have watched each many times and never get tired of them. Why holly wood can spend millions of dollars and cant duplicate...
Joy in heart more desirable than bullet.
Charlie always has great words of wisdom like that in all of his films. So many different aspects that help make it the much enjoyed film it is.
Many Blessings 🙏🇺🇸
The Apache dancing near the start is amazing!
Why do you call it Apache dancing, or why is it called such?
@@patriciajrs46 wiki In fin de siècle Paris young members of street gangs were labelled Apaches by the press because of the ferocity of their savagery towards one another, a name taken from the native North American indigenous people, the Apache. Thus the name of the dance is pronounced as the French pronounce it ah-PAHSH. It is not pronounced uh-PATCH-ee which is the English language pronunciation.
The dance is sometimes said to reenact a violent "discussion" between a pimp and a prostitute. It includes mock slaps and punches, the man picking up and throwing the woman to the ground, or lifting and carrying her while she struggles or feigns unconsciousness. Thus, the dance shares many features with the theatrical discipline of stage combat. In some examples, the woman may fight back.
Ah! The gowns! The elegant settings!
Gangsters liked those suicide doors too. Just jump out and start shooting.
" And I would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for Charlie Chan, and his # 1 Son !!!."
A variation on that Scooby Doo excuse.
@@johnbockelie3899 Or #2 son, or #3 son, or #4 son, or one of his daughters. Two of his daughters showed up to help Pop, too.
One of the best...
The Thin Man is another great series, lived it too!
Love all the Charlie Chan movies. Some of the best movies ever made.
I have to agree with you, I never tire of watching them and through all these years still they entertain me as if I'm watching them for the first time. Thank you very much
I am always amazed with these movies about how light-hearted mr. Chan is about the overt racism in all the films he just rushes them off like a bit of fluff on his lapel
To me oland warner and sydney were the best chan detectives there were.
This case always throws me for a loop until near the end,but alls well and ends well!!!!!!
I gotta admit I like Oland's Chan best.
Apparently, only Americans live in Paris.
And Charlie Chan is such a good detective, he starts investigating murders even before they happen.
Today is May 20th 2022. When I watch these oldies I like to date them. They never seem to get old.
Not oldies... CLASSIC FILMS...just gives them their just due. THX!
LOVE CHARLIE CHAN ♥️❤️
1:06:22 "You meddling devil!". "Honorable ancestors to refute suggested kinship".
Call me simple, but I find that funny.
" Tell us Chan........who was the murderer?".
" Ahhhh, murderer is ..." Hello!!!, I'd like to sell you this little money maker !!"
Stupid ads .😂😂😂😂
It's a more elaborate way of saying "no," which might be part of why.
Amazing how everyone in Paris not only speaks English, but do so with an American or British accent.
It's a bloody movie! Fantasy. From Hollywood's Golden Era. It's not a documentary. Don't be so a*al.
Would have spoilt the film speaking French especially when filmed in the USA

Thank you for the Charlie Chan movies. Loved them as a child. Love them still.😊♥️
They are all the same. If you love one you will probably love them all, same as for all the other series made in that era, whether, Mr. Moto or Sherlock Holmes or Ellery Queen.... They made movies like cranking out sausages.

Enjoyed watching all the black and white movies. The TV shows were Great!
Loved The Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan staring Mary Martin. We had 3 channels. Every year Thanksgiving meant one of those two would be on and Christmas, the other.
I haven't kept up with US or foreign film for many years so we can't discuss much of that.
Favorite movies are Enchanted Cottage and Children of Paradise.
Glad you like them!

Bit more intrigue in beginning of movie; more quickly paced than other films. Great to see no.1 son again. I love those old airplanes and automobiles ( although not props like in Indiana Jones movies and not antique at the time, either.) . So classy.
This movie is 13 short years shy of being a century old!
That’s a young Master Po as number one son!
Love these old movies where they try to get the last words rather than get the victim to a doctor.
Love these CLASSIC FILMS! Sounds so much better! 😀🎄
I love the sets of the apts. So beautiful. In these old movies they paid great attention to such details and they are eye candy for the soul.

If I had the money I would bank roll a new series of Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, and other classic crime drama movies in B&W with the same gritty look so as to not look too modern, clear, and clean. I would use stage actors and not the usual ego inflated over paid Hollywood babies and give a real chance to the stage actors who are so often overlooked. I would have loved to see these movies when they first came out. I might just get a projector, screen and sound system and through a Saturday night neighborhood Charlie Chan marathon. Boze, good grilled food and Charlie Chan movies sounds like a wonderful time.
I am amazed how much Charlie Chan gets away with. He could never do half the stuff he does now.
But still fun to watch.
Love Charlie Chan movies 👍👍👍 we need more movies like this today thanks

My favourite Charlie Chan movie by far. Smacks of Edgar Allen Poe's August Dupin (I believe is his name). Good performances by everyone. Excellent.
Charlie Chan has always been one of my favorite shows ever Rowan Williams and Sidney Tyler have always been my favorite
Who is Rowan Williams? Never heard of him playing Charlie Chan. 😀

This was good and the dance routine was outstanding better than anything Hollywood can come up with go to a theater no thanks
You are HALF correct. West Side Story was just RE - released by Steven Spielberg & its dance sequences are outstanding.
Damnit...Give the man a donut, he's earn it! Of course this is Paris, so he'll have to settle for a beignet!
Enjoyed the movie very much. Saw these when I was a kid. Interesting things though, set in Paris but all the bank and police characters all spoke perfect english. Also, in Europe the car steering wheels are on the left and they drive on the right as we do. Well, it was 1935.
I think Paris drives opposite of the way we do in the USA, just as London does. Please notice when Charlie gets in the car with the girl's fiance, that fiance is driving from what we call the passenger side. The right side of the car.
@@patriciajrs46 in france they drive on the right...uk, on the left
Australia & UK BOTH drive on the left; Hence, their steering column is located on the right side of the car...opposite of USA. 😎
