    I love the warmth of the scene when Charlie reunites with his son in the hotel room. The little details, like the domestic familiarity of helping his dad with the coat and house robe, then kneeling to remove his shoes. The concern when he discovers someone tried to kill Charlie. A lovely little scene.
    A reflection of the two actors great relationship. Keye called him pop in real life too, and Warner took him under his wing and acted as his mentor.
    Keye Luke always spoke very highly of him.
    When Warner died they offered Keye to continue with Toler, but he refused out of respect for his friend.
    One of my favorite Hollywood stories.

    1935, born in 1960 I love these back and white Chan movies, it's funny, as a young person I used to think this was so old, but now that I'm older I realize time slips by quickly, even 100 years isn't that long.

      @@MichaelGunner123 Too bad we don't have movies 1, 3, 4, and 5 to judge the earlier works... But from what we do have, Warner Oland's takes come across as (mostly) more patient,* and less jaded. Especially considering the Shanghai movie starts with him playing Leap Frog with kids and singing to them.
      * He does get angry at his assistant in the 2nd movie, "the Black Camel." Koshimo is his assistant, who opens a door as a wind beats down on it, and that blows a bunch of photograph pieces off a table. Charlie then says "Koshimo, you are Zebra." Koshimo asks what Charlie means, and Charlie then says "Sport model jackass!" - But that's the only time I know of Warner Oland's takes on Charlie Chan to be impatient.

      Why do you call it Apache dancing, or why is it called such?

    • @653j521
      @653j521 Před rokem +2

      @@patriciajrs46 wiki In fin de siècle Paris young members of street gangs were labelled Apaches by the press because of the ferocity of their savagery towards one another, a name taken from the native North American indigenous people, the Apache. Thus the name of the dance is pronounced as the French pronounce it ah-PAHSH. It is not pronounced uh-PATCH-ee which is the English language pronunciation.
      The dance is sometimes said to reenact a violent "discussion" between a pimp and a prostitute. It includes mock slaps and punches, the man picking up and throwing the woman to the ground, or lifting and carrying her while she struggles or feigns unconsciousness. Thus, the dance shares many features with the theatrical discipline of stage combat. In some examples, the woman may fight back.

    Enjoyed the movie very much. Saw these when I was a kid. Interesting things though, set in Paris but all the bank and police characters all spoke perfect english. Also, in Europe the car steering wheels are on the left and they drive on the right as we do. Well, it was 1935.
