That's why it's called "the fog." Her ex was so far in the fog he probably couldn't see his own ass. It's a common thing with awful MILs, he's essentially brainwashed and can't think like a normal person. He thinks this is normal, he'll always choose his mom and do whatever she says until someone sweeps the fog away. It doesn't justify his actions, but it does mean that he's a victim of decades of psychological abuse.

    The last story:
I had a feeling that Joel was thinking that he would look better if OP was there in his usual manner and both Jean and Sam would fall for him.
Ironically it turns out that OP is a charmer who can actually offer a pretty damn good time to his date (no dirty things in mind of course) while the only thing Joel can do is pout in the corner despite having all the chances to hit it off with Jean in the same charming way. But no - he prefered to pout.
Now that's what i call a spectacular backfire.

@@lorilancaster5917 Yeah, basically Joel thought he was hot shit, only to realize he was actually quite boring. From the sounds of it, he only wanted to get into Jean's pants, while OP wanted to show his date a great time (in a non-sexual way.) At least now he seems to realize you should care more about your date, than getting into their pants.

    • @Arkryal
      @Arkryal Před 8 měsíci +20

Yeah, poor stupid Joel, lol. I can't be too critical, we guys all make this mistake when we're young, but the "Cool Guy" thing... women don't go for that. They love it in small doses, but if you try that hard to be cool all the time, it seems forced, and they don't feel like they're getting to know you on any deeper level. It's like an act and you're stuck in character. Either that or they think you have a very shallow, 1-dimensional personality, and that is boring.
It's OK to be a bit corny every once in a while because when you are, it's genuine and you're making an effort. They find our awkward moments endearing because it's humanizing and relatable. And women just light up when we start geeking out over something weird because it's proof that you're passionate about something. It's even OK to be just a little bit of a jackass sometimes (in moderation, of course, not as a primary trait of your personality, lol). They want to know the person, not the false persona. And if you let your guard down around them enough to show some of those awkward traits, they feel like they can be less guarded as well.
I wish I had learned this when I was younger, lol. Being cool requires you to not care about how other may judge you, and to just be yourself without fear. Thus trying to be cool always fails, like swimming against the undertow... the harder you try, the further from you drift from that goal. Joel was trying too hard, but life is so much easier when you learn you don't need to do any of that. Being cool is not the opposite of being a dork, it's about owning your dorkishness, unrepentantly and with grace.

    • @AzureKyle
      @AzureKyle Před 8 měsíci +13

@@Arkryal It's funny because it's an oxymoron. They try so hard to act cool like they don't care about anything, but that in itself is caring about something, so it's immediately not cool. It's only by not caring about being cool that you actually become cool.

I am attracted to guys like OP and not Joel. It doesn't matter to me if someone is cubby and balding, just as long as they are a wonderful person and charming. OP sounds like he has so much more to offer than Joel. It sounds like Joel is very superficial and totally full of himself. Even if I'm not physically attracted to someone in the beginning, I would be after getting to know and in a relationship with them. This was the case with my ex-fiance and I was with him for 7 years.

Yeah, but there's a gradient to it. Sure, if you love your spouse but don't really click with a parent in law, maybe they make some snide comments here and there, it's tolerable. The issues really start with how the spouse reacts to it. I wouldn't demand no contact, unless it's crazy issues like the abduction story, but a clear positioning against toxic behavior, and limiting contact as a consequence of continuing would be a minimum for me to stay with that person.

I knew a lady just like Alexa. Only she wasn't in her twenties, but in her forties and still behaved like an overgrown middle school mean girl who never mentally or emotionally matured past the age of 11. Let's call her Sally. Like Alexa, Sally had no respect for boundaries, zero regard for the word no being a complete sentence, nothing resembling a sense of empathy or accountability. Only when she was backed up against a wall, did she let the words like "I'm sorry” fall out of her mouth but she never actually meant them. The classic non-apology was as good as it got. No changed behavior whatsoever. You get the idea.
Sally showed me her true self, that she didn't have a single redeeming quality about her or a shred of humanity in her dark soul, the day my father died from stage-four lung cancer.
When she tried to turn my father's death into one of her spotlight moments and talk about herself, I ripped her to shreds. She was astounded. Being the coward that she is and the fact that she was one time zone and 600 miles away from me, she had the nerve to say and I quote verbatim: "Well, you and your dad never got along anyway.”
I ended the call after calling her a bitch and apparently she whined to anyone who would listen, including her husband who was completely appalled at her behavior. She was shamed into apologizing to me, but I didn't read any of her messages or listen to her voicemails or any of her texts. When she realized that I wasn't going to take the bait, I got a wall of text, grammatically incorrect, typo-filled ranty e-mail blaming me for her husband and her having a huge fight. I didn't respond for a couple days and I knew it drove her nuts. After all, depriving a narcissist of attention is like withholding drugs from a junkie when they need a fix. I eventually responded and told her to back off or I would tell her husband about all of her affairs. It turned out she was, in fact, cheating or had at least tried to. She left me alone after that.

Like, he didn't even go there with any expectations. All he wanted was to do his buddy a solid and make it a nice evening for Sam. That's so incredibly wholesome! And it shows that he genuinely cares about her having a good time. I hope she reciprocates that energy and they get to make each other really happy!

    2. limit ex to supervise visits with someone neutral at a neutral place
    3. notify school that the dad and ex mil is under no circumstances allowed to check her out
    4. to be 100% safe very likely wont be needed), ex BIL and his wife, despite being good people, cant check her out unless op is called right there and then. and id needed to prove they are them. again to be 100% safe just in case. doubt theyd side with MIL but MIL and ex could hire someone to pretend they are them...or twist things to make them switch sides

That last story is one of my all time favorites. Sam was hesitant because she saw OP putting in very little effort at school. But when he showed up on the date, I think it immediately hit her that actually, OP is just excellent at prioritising. He knows where the effort SHOULD be put - like, for example, a nice date ♡
It makes me so happy for both of them. OP demonstrated so well how one should approach dates - with effort and respect, but without high expectations. Just checking about compatibility. And whatever Sam may have been worrying about actually turned into an all around lovely time, and a relationship with someone she really clicks with and is treated well by. That makes me so happy!

First story: I hope she is able to maintain supervised visits, only, because people rarely ever change. My husband's ex proved that, as she pulled a lot of the same paretal alienation tactics. She'd act to our faces like she understood that her actions were wrong, but it was more than obvious that she kept it up behind closed doors. And it was also obvious that she was making the kid involved keep it all a secret -- which is something my husband also called out as wrong.

He ENABLES AND DEFENDS his Mommy’s horrible actions and entitlement, while just ignoring his ex’s warnings and his daughter’s health and safety!
And what the Ex-Husband AND Ex-MIL tried to do, trying to get OP back and attempted kidnapping of OP’s daughter and telling her about moving, etc., shows that these two are borderline DANGEROUSLY unhinged and creepy!
Bad enough that the Ex-Husband tried to get OP back with his begging and such, but him and his Mom TRYING to manipulate the daughter and kidnap her…

As for the last story, I'm going to quote CZcamsr Shugurr's "asked out as a prank" video:
"For some people, there self worth is tied to their social status. They'll try super hard to stand out and be expected. They might pile on the makeup, buy expensive clothes, create a fake persona, but none of these things can actually fix the real issue. But it can increase their social points a bit. So when they see someone they think of as a lower status just existing, being happy regardless of the clothes or status that they have, it's a huge shock. They start thinking about what they says about THEM. And their place in this world."
This fits this story exactly. It sounds to me like Joel is jealous of op being happy despite him (possibly) thinking of him as lower.

First Story: People who defend a racist are just as bad as the racist themself. This man defended his mom when she was being blatantly disrespectful and racist to OP and tried to take their daughter away from OP. This man is a walking red flag and insane. The fact this man sees the error of his ways after his brother stood up for his wife against his family is wild, the fact he thinks flowers and chocolates is going to win OP back is wild, and the fact he is trying to get their daughter to hate OP because OP refuses to go back with this manipulative asshat is baffling. OP needs to get full custody and cut all forms of contact from this guy
Update 1: So this man plans to just take their daughter? He does know thats illegal right?
Update 2: I’m glad OP is taking the right steps to protect her child. I honestly think she should keep her daughter away from this man because I have a feeling he is going to feed their daughter lies about OP
Second Story, NTA: Wow, Alexa is a different kind of evil; why is OP with this woman? Where does this hatred come from? Rachel was abandoned by her mother and lost her dad and Alexa is being needlessly mean. OP should see this as the red flag as it is

Third Story: Seems like Joel is mad that OP was having a better time with Sam and Jean being happy for her friend than Jean having her attention 100% on him. Hearing this, I was under the impression that it was a double date, not OP babysitting Jean's friend so Joel can get a chance at getting laid that night

I think it's safe to say that Joel and OP had two very different ideas in mind about OP's "job". Joel i think wanted OP to do the bare minimum to spend time with Sam to placate Jean. OP heard that this was Sams first real date and wanted to do his best to give her a good date. OP did what Jean wanted instead of what Joel wanted basically. Lol. I also vibe with OP about looking completely different outside of work/school. My coworkers sometimes don't recognise me when I wear normal clothes and wear makeup and dont have my hair up

Story 2 Alexa is a heartless witch like her mother. If she should be hating anyone, it should be her mother. She cheated and slept with another man and had his baby then proceeded to abandon her just so she could play house with Alexa's father who from the sounds of it, is more stable in every way. She only confess cuz of guilt yet she didnt do shet to reconnect with her other Racheal. Hearing how Alexa say those heartless things to Racheal when she hasnt said nor done anything to her is just disgusting and clearly takes more from the mother. Even if op didnt give her that ultimatum on apologizing or breaking up, she would have NEVER apologized to Racheal.
This goes to show how evil and how much a of bich Alexa is to her own sister who did nothing but exist to gain so much hate. Their mother is just as guilty as all this hate is produced by her infidelity, yet she she took no accountability and allowed this hate to fester and grow.

Story 1. My guess is flying to Mexico was just the first hop. Get there and then go to their final place that may not be Mexico.

First story: She should have been able to get his visitation taken away or at least supervised visitation
