  • After our last successful duck hunt, we were excited to get back in the blind. This was one of our best duck hunts this year. Kyle offers some entertainment before the hunt. I shot my first Wigeon, and was able to see a Pintail for the first time.

    HAHA, cutting up your shirt to use as toilet paper is most certainly "Thinking like Dan!" Well said!

      The fact that he grabbed the machete to cut it up seemed even more like a Dan thing.

    Very nice. Nice bonus birds too. We've only got 1 wigeon in the last 3 years on closing day 3 years ago. I've never got one and never got a redhead either. Glad someone saved some videos up to have something to watch still.

      I got a really pretty one in the next video *spoiler* and I kind of regret not getting it mounted. It was a stud. I just didn't want to send another to the taxidermist when I'm still waiting to get my first mount back.

    Zip lock sammich bag and a partial roll is standard equipment in my blind bag, deer stand bag, tackle boxes, etc. It's also good for emergency fire starter, etc. If all else fails use shiny green leaves! Lol

    Good stuff man! Always great to get on a lot of birds. Congrats on the wigeon!

    Wow, Drake, great hunt! And nice shooting despite your harsh self-criticism! Looked like you all shot really well from here! That is a beautiful, ducky hole for sure.
    -What's the story on the blind (that is a blind, right?) out front of you? Permanent blinds on public water in KS?
    -The entire when-a-guy's-gotta-go-a-guy's-gotta-go TP situation was hilarious. "Now you're thinking like Dan!" Great example of the importance of layers! Haha
    -The bailing wire double-can sitch was super iventive. I was wondering if an alternative could have been to use the wire to fashion a grate of sorts for those single can moments?
    -And woah, was blown away by the quality of that cell phone video!!!! WOAH! Who knew? Truly blown away by that!
    Thanks for having us along and looking forward to the next! Our duck time ended on Jan 29 on the CO Front Range and we're down to one week left for dark geese. Weather isn't looking great (too warm and no precip to get them stirring around), but a few high wind days keeps a some small modicum of hope alive. They get antsy and fly low on high wind days out this way. Regardless, we'll be grinding til the bitter(sweet) end! Cheers, Fellas!

      Yes, that is the blind that we were in the last hunt. I'm not sure what the full story is on it. I don't know who built it, but it's been there for years. I believe our laws state that it would have to be removed every year.. but that never happens and the wildlife offices never take it down.
      If I ever needed to go.. I'd be in trouble. I only wear the layers I need, and wouldn't want to be hacking up my base layers!
      Bailing wire works wonders! I thought about trying to make a grate, but we didn't have enough on hand. I just buy Progresso instead of Campbells now. The Progresso cans fit perfect. Now we just carry an empty progresso can and sit the Campbells can down inside it.
      Our duck season ended the same day. These last videos will all have happened during the last 9 days of the season. I'm just taking my time posting them. This week would be our last week for dark geese. We may try to chase them one more time, but it hasn't gone nearly as well as our duck season.
      As always, thanks for watching Yup!

      Drake Valley Outdoors I'm glad you're taking your time posting the remaining vids. I'm already feeling the post-season duck doldrums and it gives me something to look forward to to scratch that itch! And I have to work this weekend, so no season closing goose hunts. I took the dog out for a 1 hour hunt Tuesday evening. Didn't know it at the time, but that was our last hunt of the season. Bummer! Take care and "see" ya soon!

      +MadFishing32 my goal is to get a pintail drake next year! I'm going to really try to figure out how to get more to come into the decoys. We saw quite a few this year but this was the only one that came in.

    • @jacob3144
      @jacob3144 Před 7 lety

      Drake Valley Outdoors Sounds off but a Canada goose call brings Pintails in lol. If I have a couple dozen honkers out, I'll just honk at the pintails and they respond much better than to a mallard call.. Or just a simple whistle works as well

    • @GTOutdoors
      @GTOutdoors Před 7 lety

      Drake Valley Outdoors I had the pintails really liking the 5-1 call early season. They would fly off the water in other locations to come over to us. Unfortunately we were only able to get hens until I got the drake on my last hunt. When everybody else is screaming mallard quacks at them and they hear that pintail whistle they seem to like it.

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

      I have a whistle, and was trying to use that this year but it never seemed to help much. I thought I heard somewhere that they are shy of spinners.. not sure if it was true. I'm going to try to add some more species to our spread this year and see if that helps.
      I can kind of believe the goose call thing, Ben. There were many times this year that we were trying to call at geese and had ducks bomb in.

    Great video. I came across your channel through FDH, who I follow regularly. This was the best one yet. Just sat down and watched all 12 hunting videos. I hope to have my channel rolling this year and will primarily shoot it with action cams. What attachments do you think are the most useful for filming hunts?

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for watching! I think a tripod mount + tripod, or some other way of mounting a camera to a stake is one of the best ways. Gun mounts and head cams aren't terrible, but I think they lack in quality due to the camera shake when taking shots. I also like to use a higher quality mic (Rode VideoMicro).

    • @zdjones88
      @zdjones88 Před 7 lety

      Drake Valley Outdoors Thanks. I haven't come across a stake mount but that would be great. Have you found one or figured how to make one,

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety +1

      I think most guys DIY it. I've just been using a tripod. I might try to make something for next year.

      I just usually have a roll of TP in my blind bag. For whatever reason there wasn't any in my bag this day.

    Does JR get pretty crowded? You would think they're would be less hunters at the end of the season

      It seems like the last week of the season is usually pretty busy everywhere, but I'm not at JR.

    Are you going to be making any offseason vids? If so what kind?

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

      I'm going to be trying out some fishing videos for sure. I also still have hunting related videos planned. Mainly reviews, gear setup, ect. We might do some camping trips, so I might do some vlogs of that. Also been thinking of making some BBQ videos, but I'm still not sure on that.

      @RogueSpartanTactical Před 7 lety

      yeah i have avians so i wanna make sure they are protected but as im sure you know lugging all that into the marsh is a pain in the rear, i did it all last season and by the time it ended i felt 80 lol

    • @DrakeValleyOutdoors
      @DrakeValleyOutdoors  Před 7 lety

      Yeah, I don't think I'll ever walk in hunt without a sled or cart again after having these sleds this year.
