  • On this duck hunting adventure, we almost made a costly mistake by sleeping in a little bit. Having your gear prepared ahead of time is definitely beneficial, and it helped us beat some guys who were already in the parking lot.
I had some camera struggles on this day, but we finished with a two man limit mixed bag. I shot my first redheads, and we got some mallards and wigeon.

Great vid man! I'm really jealous of your mixed bag haha only way it could have been better is if you got a pin tail.

Another fun and successful hunt and more good shooting. Way to go Drake! Don't beat yourself up over missing shots with the camera! Your subscribers enjoy regardless. Those redheads sure are beautiful birds. I don't understand the guy dissing your calling in the comments since there was very little calling featured in this episode (?). When you talked about the birds dumping in after you'd finished, I could only smile, shrug my shoulders, and empathize. Obviously your vid (and the next ones) are after the season, but it perfectly framed my last day of the '16/'17 waterfowl season yesterday (20170212). Duck season has been out here in CO for two weeks. We got a warm spell and my little pond lease opened up and while hunting the closing weekend for geese, the ducks were bombing into the pond...no circling...no hesitance...just bombing in! Pins, gads, mallards, baldies, and even some newly arrived northbound teal. It was fun to watch and all, but dang that ice during the season and the overall timing of things. OH...and speaking of which, so I feel your pain about the "bad neighbors." While I do pay for a modest little lease, I still hunt public plenty. The thing with the lease is not having to deal with ding dongs. There are days I know I could get up at 3am and fight the race to the "honey hole" and then hope like heck that idiots don't set up around me and it's a roll of the dice. Then there are days I can get up an hour before LST, enjoy a nice breakfast, relax, take my time, decoys are bagged up at the pond, 20 min drive, 30 min setup, and reeeeeeelax while the sun comes up. Just sayin. Four guys go in on a lease together, it's not that bad of a $sting and it's an option when you don't feel like racing the race and dealing with the ding dongs. I am not kidding when I say it has saved my waterfowl sanity. My wife won't go with me on public any more. She will only go when we're on the lease. I know you don't have a dog, but it also gives me a place to run, train, and exercise my lab even when we aren't hunting. Just food for thought for ya as a maturing waterfowler! The lease isn't a tether, it's a vacation! Lastly, sorry for my (usually) long posts, but I type as fast as a canvasback flies!

Yup lol nobody was "Dissing his calling" He will tell You himself that He's a new caller. And for being a new caller, he does an amazing Job. He never calls too much which I think gets him to bag more birds in the end. All I was saying is with those smaller decoy spreads It's tough to get groups of late season mallards to commit that last little bit and feet down unless You are a good caller and can get really aggressive on them right before they commit. Im a firm believer in only calling as much as the birds want you to. But again late season with small spreads, sometimes you have to be aggressive

Thanks Yup! I always enjoy reading your comments so no need to apologize for the length! I don't think Steve was dissing the calling in this video, but we have gotten some comments about the calling in other videos, and as Steve said I don't mind admitting that my calling is not the best. Just more motivation for practicing this off season!
I would really like to have a lease in my back pocket for the very reasons you mentioned. Leases scare me though. Being newer to waterfowl, and not having the years of scouting knowledge for the areas around me.. I'm very worried about hopping into a "dud" lease. I've definitely been researching though.

Steve Chmiel Gotcha! Good advice, for sure! Didn't mean to sound like a jerky jerkerton! My dad was a duck biologist and taught me to call as a pup, so I (too) often take calling for granted. I fully understand you're just giving some positive tips to a young guy like Drake. Cheers!

Drake Valley Outdoors Understood about the risk of a dud lease. I have some great hunts on mine on weather days, primarily, and 1-3 days after a big push of new birds before they are patterned. I definitely admit freely that I could kill more birds with bigger drive time and fighting the public fight, which like I said, I still do plenty, but then there are those days I'm happy to kill a a bird or three or four...or not...and just fully enjoy my time on the water. But, point being, fully understand your hesitance!

I know you always say "they didn't work how we wanted" or "we didn't get them how we wanted" I will say dude that's hunting and that for only hunting the last couple years and being fairly new at it, You're KILLIN IT !!! Seriously Your hunts are some of my favorites to watch bro ! For being fairly new and not being able to call super good yet, you do about as good as you can !! As far as smaller spreads, they'll work a ton better once you get better at calling. I ran like 9-11 decoys the last half of the season and shot limits 8 out of the 9 times I did it. Out west is a 7 bird limit too. You can also shoot 7 mallards ! But yea man, You hammer them !! It really seems like you hunt the right way for being so new at the sport. You gotta get Your FDH buddies out with you next year so you can kill them some birds lol. Again, Good job bro 👍🏽

Thanks Steve! When I say they aren't working how we wanted, I'm moreless meaning they weren't working right in front of the camera. They were usually still nice close shots for shooting, just not always a squared up shot for everyone shooting, including the camera. I also really like to shoot ducks straight in front of me with they're feet right off the water... so I'm a little picky and if they're landing on the edge of the decoys "they weren't working how I wanted them" lol.
Thanks for all the encouragement. It really does mean a lot. I think Elliott and I will for sure be working out something to connect on a hunt next year.

Drake, another good video! I think you should just do a whole season highlight kill shot video. Or maybe 3 separate videos, early season kill shots, mid season kills, and then late season kills. I know a lot of people say they don't like the "kill only" videos, but they do get a lot of views and we already know what it is like in your duck blind so I don't think you'd lose subscribers because of it. Make each clip 1-4 seconds, add some music and see what happens.

Thanks, I was thinking more like having 10 moments from the season overall and then going over each of those moments and why I chose them. So it would be a little less like a straight montage.

it’s weird how rare some birds are in some states. Down here in texas we shoot a wigeon almost every hunt lol

Hey Drake. Pinging you on this most recent post even though it's unrelated, but I just stumbled onto this CZcamsr, Warren Hicks. Jaw-dropping shooting. His vids aren't the best, but his shooting is, well, jaw dropping. Thought you might enjoy checking him out. I sure did. Great food-for-thought on leads and shot placement for young guns and old guns alike. *chuckling* I get no compensation for this bump, just thought you might enjoy checking him out. Hope you're doing well!

Yup, I do believe I am subscribed to his channel. He is an incredible shooter. I don't know if he edits out misses, but regardless, he still shoots many doubles and triples. You can clearly see his ability to pick out individual birds when shooting at large groups. Something I struggle with doing, especially when trying to pick out the greenheads at the same time.
