- After a break from gaming that felt a lot longer than it actually was, I take to the air once more in an Arcade battle & discover just how much rust I've accumulated. The answer? Plenty!
This is probably the most n00b-ish video I've ever made for War Thunder - you get to watch me make mistake after mistake. But hopefully there's some good stuff hidden among the dross :)

I stopped playing Warthunder about the same time you quit and found other games of interest. Nevertheless I keep myself informed. Secondly I noticed I am featured in this video (Fireshorts) albeit mowing grass in the furball. I didn't even realise you were playing that day!
Anyhow, I'm relatively new to the game, I've only been playing for around a month or two now but since watching your videos and learning about the game and each plane I have found myself improving immensely although it doesnt show in this recent battle.

Welcome back! After a bit of a rough start with concrete damage models (tweaked & improved just yesterday I believe) I'm actually quite enjoying the game at the moment. I certainly needed the break though.

I once told you that I was teaching my fledgling squadron your tactics and recommending them your videos. We were 7 strong then and now we're up to 60! They've made great strides in these past few months and find much more enjoyment in the game after having learned how to properly utilize what they've learned.
Every other match we'll discuss tactics and often times you and your content get brought up. I look forward to fighting with/against the master soon!

Please tell me your squadron name so I know to look out for you - and run & hide when I see 4 of you heading my way :)
I make so many mistakes here; if I'd approached this as an "Analyze This" video, it'd go for over 30 minutes as I constantly paused it & criticized all the bad decisions. But that doesn't sound like much fun does it - I know I'm rusty as hell :)
Here's just a few (apart from those I didn't point out in the narration), and they all stem from lousy situational awareness:-
1. After rope-a-doping the La-5, the P-38 was just over 1km away but I just didn't see it. I should have extended away from both it and the boom and zooming La-5, using Messersmitt-like tactics to dodge the BnZ. That would have gotten me away from the attacker spawn.
2. When I started my dive to drag the P-38s to the deck, all 3 of my attackers were within 400m, but I assumed at least one of them was further away. I could have turned sharply and started a dogfight at that point instead of going defensive.
3. Chaika - apart from wasting too much ammo on that P-38, which didn't burn up anyway, when the Heinkel appeared the Hayabusa spawned in shortly afterwards - and I didn't see it. I was turning blindly in front of said Hayabusa and was lucky he didn't do more damage.
4. I never once looked directly upwards when searching for the Hayabusa.
5. Edit: As a few commenters have pointed out, my trigger discipline is non-existent.
See if you can find other mistakes, I'm sure there's plenty :)

Welcome back, Long5hot! I started playing WT in May 2015, and discovered your vids in Jan/Feb 2016. They have been a tremendous help in understanding how to play and survive. It took a while to grasp energy fighting and appropriate Boom N Zoom vs turn fighting....now if I can only get kills (I have LOTS of assists)....I've watched your vid on how to aim, and that has helped - understanding convergence and such......maybe I'm just flying in way too fast as I soot, or not aiming far enough ahead of my target.... Welcome back. Hope you are having fun flying again. Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and upload, one of the first games back. Also on the situational awareness, my son walked by while I was in a match the other day, and out of the blue he said "daddy I see why you are so good at that game" I asked him what he meant, he said " its because you are constantly looking around and you know where everyone is". Although, I know, I'm not as good as he thinks I am, I understand what he meant. It is just habit for me now. And I have to say I learned it from you, thanks.

I just started plaing 3 weeks ago. I was looking for some "youtuber" i came across you, saw all yours videos and then i seen that you take a break... Now you're back right in time!!! Im so happy learned SOO mouch from you and you even said you will make a tutorial on climbing spiral AWSOME. Please add some more guides. A lot of the other War Thunder-centric CZcamsrs have gone silent, but there's till a lot of good content available on their channels.
Check out Magz_TV, Jengar, GrmlZGaming, and tx141TX. All have done excellent review and tutorial videos in the past, though I believe Magz and GrmlZ have dropped WT content recently.

good to see you back, mate. I also haven't played WT in many months - played some other stuff, including IL2:BoS. Take a week or so and get good, mate -- you were amazing.
I'd really like to get into IL2:BoS, as I bought it half price last year. My problem is that in the hangar & menus it wants to thrash my GPU up to 100%, and it gets so hot that it sounds like the computer's going into meltdown :\
Really cool to see you back, you and Jengar are the only two making "smart" AB videos for this game imo.

I agree on the frontline maps and have found that the matches do tend to last a little longer than usual. Many matches end up being won by the team with planes remaining. Its worth a bit of caution to make sure you last the distance.
Don't worry about the salty replies about WT. It aint that bad. Plenty of fun still to be had.

Re the squadron, when I fired up the game after my absence I found myself tagless. I didn't worry about it as I thought it'd probably be better to fly for a while without a distinctive "target me" tag.

UMM well they really hammered us all with EC around 2 week's ago started at low BR rank 1 and built up around rank 3 BR 4.3 sadly the que times are way to long so i tend to not even try them..really good to see you back mate.

Ugh, Gorge with its Death Star trench.
Turns out The Trench is actually quite a bit of fun when you're roaring through it at 950kmh in a Thunderjet. Pop out the far end, zoom climb back up to altitude, split-S back over, and repeat.
...mind you, that's the ONLY thing that's any fun about the F-84, but, well, one better than none, eh?

Hmm SB ... well, I do have the equipment thanks to apieceofstring (in WT he's Setch) who contributed to my buying a joystick & pedals not long before I had to take my break. I'm woeful with it though - I can fly in a custom battle against biplanes, maybe shoot down 1 or 2 through complete luck, and crash several times through stall spins that suddenly bite me in a turn. I need a lot more practice to improve & get comfortable with the controls before I'd try an actual PvP battle.
Take off, landing, flat spins, and reduced visibility are the biggest differences. They can be dealt with if you just get good information. It provides a much more realistic environment that I find very satisfying (the fact that there's more communication and cooperation between team members is an additional bonus).
I'd love to help train or just be a friendly bystander if you decide to indulge.
I practiced quite a bit with Setch before I took my break, both of us flying P-38s. He was easily able to out-turn me, as I'd be continually on the edge of going into a flat spin but somehow he could push the turn a bit harder & not spin. I guess its just practice and getting more of a feel for the plane.
I don't have head tracking, so that's a serious disadvantage & I'm stuck with hat switch for now. That's part of what I don't like with SB - your equipment has a huge impact on how effective you can be. Especially when it comes to keeping track of opponents in a dogfight, as I've found it extremely difficult keeping track of where my enemy is in close quarters battles.
I do like the feel of my Thrustmaster HOTAS X and CH Pro pedals, but I just can't seem to settle on a setup that I like. In particular I really struggle with slight course adjustments, with the plane either not responding enough - or suddenly over-responding, and of course that translates to not being able to hit targets. I spent a long time trying to keep my movements smooth & gentle, but really didn't improve very much and just ended up with really sore wrists ;)
I'll give it another go, but not straightaway. I might give RB another try first.
+long5hot I have the same joystick and had the same problem. The ball inside needs some work which I can walk you through. I couldn't find internet help so I took it apart and explored. The fix was not too tough once I found the problems.
Hmm ... taking it apart ... sounds scary :) I'm not sure if its the stick or the game, as it has similar lag in its response to the rudder pedals. I've also played a little IL2:BoS (can't play a lot of it because it makes my GPU want to melt down when in the hangar & menus) and I didn't have the same issues there at all.
