ASUS' ROG Strix 2080 Ti card uses a custom PCB with a high-end VRM and well-designed VRM layout. We'll cover this aspect more in our PCB analysis and VRM break-down. The card also uses an updated cooler, improved on top of the GTX 1080 Ti ROG Strix card, and uses a new flow-straightener design to theoretically reduce turbulent air. We will test this in our 2080 Ti ROG Strix review in the near future.

OW!
want to thumb up now, however I have a policy of watching a vid first. That opening was great. lol.
yeah boii
I have one Q, how easy is that cover to get off to get to the fins to clean the card? is it only 6 screws around the outside or do you need to lift the thing out of the baseplate 'brace' to get to some screws to be able to clean the cooling fins?
Looks much easier to mod for a water block. Great vid Steve and Crew. B)
#askgn material probably. Why does TU102 core get a silvery 'frame' around the core (like Pascal and Maxwell and many others), but TU104 doesnt? Is that frame have any use from the chip maker's perspective? To me that's the final safeguard of users applying too much paste (verge?) on the GPU, but I'm not convinced since lid-less CPUs (on laptops) dont have that frame either.
I've always appreciated you guys' hard work in doing reviews, rather than the more celebrity route other reviewers slide towards. Keep it up!
When you mention the type of thermal pad i think you should also note the thickness, could be useful for people who need to replace them for some reason.
Only 18 screws? Seems low I want one with 80 or so screws instead and needs glue.
I know right. Couldn't imagine how much production cost could be cut out and passed down to the consumer.
and a cover glued on over the screws so you can't clean out the cooler, lol.
I mean, why would you even want to clean your heatsink!
lol, yeah, just buy a new card when dust starts to cling to the fins, lol. It's the new Apple-vidia, lol.
@James Murphy. Ah, that's why the reference cards cost $200 more then their AIB counterparts.
THE SHADE NEVER ENDS!
Have you seen that stupid video from the guy at The Verge? I'd swear it's like he was trying to troll people but honestly I just think he's that stupid.
Roger J After I kinda thought it had to be a joke or troll bait, however after perusing his Twitter and seeing the way he reacted to the community, I've come to the conclusion he is just a goober with the misfortune of working for an even bigger goober.
I've been hearing so much about this video, but never seen it. Have a link?
Original was taken town. watch Kyle's video, it's SO much better czcams.com/video/0vmQOO4WLI4/video.html
I just typed in the verge how to build a computer in the search bar of youtube. I think The Verge has taken down the video because I found a bunch of reuploads by different channels.
That verge reference made me spit out my water all over my keyboard from laughing so hard. Too true. Can you do a reaction video to it?
just paused the video to like for that reason loollll!!!
We won't be reacting to it, just a small comment in there!
Those shots fired made me lol so hard.
Yeah, The Verge made a video about building a PC and made utter fools of themselves, ranging from applying thermal paste on top of AIO thermal paste (not replacing, ON TOP OF), to claiming that the sound dampening feet for the PSU were so that it doesn't electrocute you.
Can you link to video? Thanks.
IMO Gamers Nexus & Hardware Unboxed tech channels are the best of the best - Great job and keep doing what you do! This is the card I'm looking to buy, so really looking forward to the benchmarks (but not so much the price).
The way the video starts made me smile from ear to ear! Thanks for that, Steve
I see these tear downs and I love it cause I know what all of those components are because I troubleshoot and repair circuit cards for a living. Great vid as always Steve!
I'm so glad the verge shade is still going.
those strix cards gettin better n better...i have a 1080 strix...this one is a real good one, but this 2080ti cooler is a beast plus this structure stabilisation frame is awesome!
@@adrenalinejunkie3828 i just say that the card is great...not that its worth the money😉...the prices of rtx and especialy of the custom cards are no joke...nvidia is goin crazy...
Was looking for information on thermalpad thickness. Measured them myself from a rog Strix 2080ti OC card bought about a month from launch. All the pad seem to be 1,5mm thick, measured with calibers.
*This* is the tear down I've been waiting for. Thanks
*Did The Verge & Tom's Hardware do a review on the 2080ti?*
hahaha they probably reviewed a 1080ti
Yes they both did. Pretty standard, benchmarks and all. They weren't that positive. About as positive on 2080ti as GN and about as negative as GN on the 2080
If you were Nvidia. Would you send Verge a card, lol?
Sadly, yes. "The Verge" has an RTX-series GPU review on their website, and they used their improperly-built PC to run the benchmarks!
Erik Hendrickson Really hahaha wtf
I have no idea what most of the stuff your talking about means but its so entertaining to watch. Absolutely love your content.
The comment about The Verge caught me off guard! Loved it!
honestly im more excited for content on the cards than the cards themselves
Thankfully you have that anti-static hair tie to keep you safe! That's a neat card, with a very rational design.
Mocking verge in ur videos... love them. Keep them up
Immediate likes for anyone who takes the piss out the Verge. Bravo sir
The verge would say, you should block entrance of air for the fans, it will get dust on your card reducing the lifespan of it.
Oh one of the best intros I've seen in a while from anyone.
That intro LOL
Savage af
I thought he'd say that you'll need a heat gun and some specialized screwdrivers, but the intention became clearer when he said "twizzers".
caught me off guard, that "phillips screwdriver" was breathtakingly funny.
Also the applying of the sponsored thermal paste XD
Thanks for this. It helped watching this before repasting mine. Cheers!
Feel the burn! 🔥😂🤣😂🤣
That intro was savage!
1k likes and 0 downvotes, I'm so proud of you guys.
Very cool thanks for the breakdown and analysis
loved that intro , made my day :D
According to the Verge, you should dip your heatsink and fans in Thermal paste to get the maxmimum airflow and heat distribution.
Love the blutooth antistatic bracelet. Also, guys remember to put the GPU into the slot where it looks prettiest
I own the Asus 1080Ti and I've been very happy with its perfromance. If I ever buy a 2080Ti I would choose Asus again. Nice video.
Loved the TG application at the begging
Nice work as usual!
OMG you killed it with the Verge joke
Just changed my thermal paste (original one) I've been using for more than 8 months. Changed for Kryonaut and saw a 4c drop didn't knew it was this easy to take apart btw it is a RTX 2080
Thank you for the information.
Never change Steve!
Nice teardown, Steve.
That was the best intro!
Amazing how much easier it was to take this apart compared to the Founders Edition.
That burn intro, ohholy.
Now that's how you do a "sick burn" on the verge.
wouldnt the K1 naming be based on the letter? K is the 11th letter of the alphabet and the m11 mem module is missing. Just a thought.
that actually makes sense. i didn't count the letters off so i'll take your word that it's the 11th letter.
Maybe I missed it, but could the k denote which module is left out. Ie core 0 core 1 etc
That's what I came to comment saw this then decided i didnt need to anymore
That well deserved shade lol, loved it
The intro is hilarious OMG!
Ohh, that was a nice burn.
please have builazoid do a PCB analysis on the new evga cards
Thanks for the information guys. Leaving a comment for the algorithm.
Stellar 2080 coverage..
lol the beginning is awesome :D
Good video. I would love to see PCB analysis for this and Strix 2080 from Buildzoid.
Wow. Just wow.
Throwing all the shade.
Thanks Steve
LOL, the beginning made my day!!!
Love the intro
12:49 The K1 could probably mean that the missing memory module has no associated capacitors and/or resistors that help control Vmem to the module. Different Kno could mean different layout of SMDs along the PCB traces.
"K1" perhaps the missing memory module is signified by the letter on the die? K is the 11th letter in the alphabet, and the slot 11 memory module was missing
Holy crap i laughed so hard with that intro, bless The Verge for this weeks LOL's
If you go clockwise, then the “K1” makes sense. If the 2nd one was missing it’d be a B1. 5th would be E1, etc.
When you talk about the additional 4 SMs that could be enabled later, along with the missing VRAM chip, it got me thinking. Future Titan RTX? $$$
I am so glad I watched this. LOLOL. I really didn't care about the strix tear down. But!
I have been dying for someone to make a better meme about the verge's how to build a gaming computer. And the intro to this video was beautiful!!!!! Made me so happy inside. GN I love your humor too damn much!
9:04 - Odd. The 2 screws on the IO shield on my card here were the same type as the ones that that the aluminium midplate has. The 2 screws with the "unthreaded" part were for the holes on the RGB backplate's surface (next to the 4 main GPU sprung screws).
It's 2024 but I hope this helps anyone who is trying to disassemble/reassemble their cards.
Not even 30 seconds in and there's already trash talk about the Verge. Man I love the Internet
the verge burns just keep coming.
This video was really helpful (have ASUS Strix RTX 2080), i have been getting crashes while playing Mechwarrior 5 mercenaries with strange errors like 3D device has been removed messages. Opened up HWInfo and ran that in the background. Saw temps of 83C for the GPU with a hot spot of 107C that's 24C difference.
Changed from the default BIOS (quiet) to performance and the GPU is like 75C and 97C hot spot at 60% fan. (crashes still occurred but not as often. (75C to me is still pretty decent to be honest but that hot spot was crazy high)
Ordered some MX5 (grizzly was not available on Amazon for Prime next day) which arrived today and removed the HSF which popped off with zero effort and was like WTF there was hardly any paste on it with the outside of the GPU not even seen paste and what little there was, was like concrete granted have had the video card for 2 1/2 years now but I expected it to last longer than that. So cleaned the GPU up and applied the MX5 and now have temps of 65C and 75C on the hot spot so from the default config that's a 32C drop. For hardly an effort got an extra 100Mhz boost clock speed, 10C drop on the GPU with a hotspot drop of 22C and the fans are spinning 10% less to boot!!!
Thanks Steve.
Steve your a genius brilliant guy
Yoooo so if you wanna paint the backplate you don't have to peel away the thermal contacts that's actually pretty sweet, you can actually make this card white quite easily
hahaha that verge troll... love it !
What I really wanna see is watercooled + overclocked 1080ti vs 2080 also watercooled and overclocked ofc
never stop burnin the verge
Love your hair! Nice video aswell.
Just want to point out with the K1 that the missing module would be "K" if you go from left to right and start with "A".
With the 1080 you did not test the Palit version which was the quietest of all. Wow the Asus card is super easy to clean, that's awesome.
The fan blade design is probably more to help people who tend to break the blades off accidentally, that ring design is more robust and less likely to break by accidental obstruction when spinning.
Looks beautiful. I'm planning on skipping this generation but if I would get a 2080ti it would be the strix. My 1080ti strix is damn good.
Now I'm tempted to change my EVGA XC Ultra 2080Ti order to this one! Same price and who wouldn't want to be a ninja?!
Don't forget the table...THE TABLE!
As for the chip markings and the "K1", seems like the memory channels might be labelled with a letter (A through L), as the K1 cards all appear to be missing the 11th memory module. (much like all GP102 1080 Tis did, IIRC)
king of shade omg
Verge life, I like it
The “Ge-Force RTX” branding next to the (SLI???) fingers i think looks nice and not too in-your-face.
You need to make an adjustment to the screw placement grid. #1 smaller grid, much smaller. #2 Have 3 GPU references in the big white square. This way you know what screws go to what process. You mixed backplate screws with cooler screws. #3 A new addition to the mat, magnetic there to hold the screws. The cheap magnetic strips used with really cheap refrigerator magnets or bought at any craft store in rolls, about 1/4 inch wide...Have strips of those embedded in the mat very close to the surface so the mat can be rolled up still but can help hold the screws. Maybe if there are stronger magnetic strips that's 1\4 inch or less wide available those might be preferable. 1 and 2 are self evident, smaller grid easier to know where to put the screws and more GPU's less mixing of screws. #3 on the other hand is to keep that sorting you painstakingly did intact if the table gets bumped. As it is the screws will fall over and roll about, if you have allot of them they can become mixed up. Sitting on a magnetized surface they wont fall over and roll plus they will be easier to stand up and if don't care if they stand up they wont roll if the table is bumped.
i knew steve will say that as soon as i saw the rubber band on his hand xD
Since Nvidia stops partners from including SLI bridge covers on their cards you should make GN branded SlI caps, you aren't an Nvidia partner not much they can do about it :)
Best way to clean modmats/cloth mousemats aka how the fudge do you get thermal paste off them? Thanks and keep up the good work. Watch you dont get a short and hurt yourself keep that esd band on lol
love it
@2:20 I'd say substantial power INput of the 2k series
Those aren't flow straighteners, they are fan tip shrouds, they work similarly to a ducted fan to reduce blade tip losses
so they made it easy to pull apart and paint decent enough work around now if only they could get rid of the logo's and disco lights
Thoughts and Prayers for Verge
The Verge roast lmao
I think they rotated the chokes so they have more space for cooling if they make a very short card (or single slot blower style), chopping off a big portion of the back of the card using maybe just those 7 phases in the front area (6+1).
Do we know clockspeeds of 3rd party cards? Will they be lower than the FE? FE looks like an factory OC card :/
Amazing how there are tons of 2080s available for purchase on Newegg nearly 24 hours after launch. Asus, MSI, Zotac, take your pick... You couldn't find a 1080 or 1080ti at launch unless you happen to be lucky enough to "smash that button" as soon as they posted. Given the performance numbers it's not surprising. I wonder how well the TI version will sell. I'm sure mining had a impact on availability for the 1080ti launch, but you would think these cards would be sold out on launch day as usual....
You forgot to mention the table man! Gonna have people building on carpets or having someone else hold it for them while they build, sheesh I thought you knew better!
That intro had me dying lmao
Verge meme, not getting old yet :)
Yes, Buildzoid!
Shots fired! xD
Throwin some serious shade!!! 😂
You need a top down camera. Save you tipping stuff up to get the shot.
