    Whats noticeable in RTX generation is, they really Fill Up the entire PCB with components.
    There are barely any empty space which we had a lot in previous generations.

    AskGN / AskBuildzoid / whatever thingy:
    I would like an explanation of the power stages needing a 5 volt supply. Is the 5 volt supply a logic thing for the power phases, or is the 5 volt supply really the source voltage? Buildzoid has glossed over that in multiple videos. If 5 volts is source voltage, how is that tiny 5 volt buck converter able to supply 300, 400, 500, ..., watts to the core power stage buck converter circuitry? Additionally, how is the power balancing able to switch such high wattage between input sources? Such a high current through such small FETs in the balance circuitry seems quite phenomenal. Thank you for your consideration!

      The 5V is there to turn the VRMs on and off. BZ has explained it in some video in the past, that may have been on his channel or a livestream, it's hard to remember since he's very rambly in a lot of videos. The Vcore power does not have to go through that 5V supply, it's solely to power the chips doing the heavy lifting.
      I assume the power balancing just looks at power monitoring circuits attached to the main inputs and the monitoring circuits send signals to the balance chips, which then swap which phases are connected to each power input? Not an engineer and have no idea how this is done. This is a topic I would love to see a video on.

      In normal buck converters, 5V is used to turn on the FETs, so-called Vg. The balancing circuit is dealing with 12V, not 1.2V, which means the current will be 10 times smaller.

      That makes sense. I wish he would say as much. But, there is one thing which is still unclear.
      If the power balance circuitry only chooses which phases are turned on, some phases remain unused when balance is not optimal. In other words, if 4 phases are dedicated to the PCI-E slot's 75 watts (ATX rated), 6 phases are dedicated to one 8 pin aux's 150 watts (ATX rated), and the remaining 6 phases are dedicated to another 8 pin aux's 150 watts (ATX rated), to "balance" you aren't really shifting power inputs, you are just decreasing the total available power by throttling the inputs which are overloaded (such as 1/3 sequential) and thus increasing the load on inputs which have plenty of headroom. I guess that is fine, but that doesn't really describe power plane switching in the way he seemed to describe. And, of course, this described method of balancing power would decrease the total maximum power output whenever balancing occurs.
      Instead, 1/3 PCI-E slot phases could be un-dedicated and 1/6 (or something like that) of each 8-pin aux input phases could be un-dedicated, each of those un-dedicated phases could freely switch between the 3 voltage sources using relatively small FETs without overloading the switching FETs, but then the total balancing ability would be minimal.
      So, I am wondering which way is utilized. The more powerful/less adjustable way, or the less powerful/more adjustable way.
      Or maybe each power stage has 3 input sources it can freely choose from wired directly to each power stage. Do power stages with multiple sources exist? I have to admit that I haven't looked at datasheets.
      Just curious.

      I can only imagine the mess of a circuit diagram these new cards use to get power AND phase balancing with a 10 phase controller running 16 phases from 3 different power inputs. All so the card can't go over a power limit that's on the nanny state side of safety.
      Given that there are 16 phases and 10 PWM signals. It could be that they balance using the 6 twin phases. The balance circuits switchs which phase in the twin actually receives the PWM signal and in turn which input has the least load and so which phase to use. Each twin phase has 1 phase linked to each 8 pin and whichever one fires is directly related to which 8 pin has the least power draw when one of the 6 PWM signals is sent to a twinned phase.
      This is probably just 1 part of how the whole of the VRM actually works. The other parts I have no clue about as I don't design VRMs and have only Buildzoids info scattered across main PCB breakdowns and livestreams to go on.

    So, stupid question: why everyone (from nvidia FE to 3rd party) went for a much more aggressive cooling solution with this series of cards if heat is not really a problem (at least on vrms)? The core runs like the sun or what?

      Good question. Not seen any answer apart from last gen FE were inefficient gash...nothing to justify 2.75 - 3.0 slot size with all the extra heatsinks etc.

      I'm guessing it is to undercut custom boards. If you can get a manufacturer card that will work for 99% of the average persons needs there's no reason to look at other beefy overkill cards. But that's for the average user, dual bios is a huge selling point for me, not to mention custom solder points.

      TDPs (thermal design power) are higher on the RTX 20 series cards compared to GTX 10 series. So even though the VRMs are so overpowered and run really cool, the GPU chip itself generates more heat than in the GTX 10 series and needs beefier cooling.

    What if the power limit is this small because it's just for the shaders? RT and tensor cores aren't even enabled yet, those will need power too. That would explain the combination of a ridiculously overkill VRM and the strict power limits that is starting to become a theme.

      The RT and tensor cores are accounted for in the TDP of these cards, which are quite low compared to what the VRM is capable of. So it's probably just Nvidia being Nvidia and wanting to control their "partners". Also, if you could easily overclock the card a lot, then you wouldn't need a new card as soon as you do now. They're clamping the performance to some certain level so that the next round of cards are more desirable since you can't just OC your old card to match the performance of the new cards.

      Yeah, I know, the basic idea is you get X amount of power for the regular shaders and Y for the RTX stuff. The VRM is designed for X+Y, but the power limit for just rasterization is X, so that when RTX is enabled it can easily draw X+Y and doesn't power limit the regular shaders even more.
      In other words, the strict power limit for rasterization in my theory is a way to keep some headroom for RTX in all cases, Nvidia is not letting this card go any faster in RTX off mode than in RTX on (even though it probably could) to avoid making RTX look bad.

    where does he find the data sheets on these card's PCBs? I really would like to read them myself and see the landscape of the controller, power balancer ICs across the board and the series of models being changed per each generation and the modding headroom unoccupied. If anyone knows about good sources, please let me know.

      You can Google patents and each microcontroller should have a data sheet corresponding to its model number (so people making electronics know how they work). That being said you'll probably have to read them a couple times to really grasp what they are saying, most of what I read is over my head because I don't really understand how to make circuits. But the numbers are nice to look at :)

    i do wonder what would happen if you filled in the blank labeled parts with scavenged bits. like could you get another memory module for memory 11 slot, or those 3 aluminium capacitors missing on the back... like is there a "hacked" possible version of a 2080TI you could make with a rewritten bios, etc

    It's a shame that you no langer can modify your cards bios. On my Maxwell TitanX I just irceased it by 150 Watts and no longer had to worry about reaching the powertarget.
    When modifying the shunt resistors: would you rather solder a secand resistor on top as mentioned in this video or just short them?
    In other videos I saw that decreasing the resistance sometimes causes the card to stay at the idle clock of around 150MHz.

    Okay, so I'm trying to figure out a system to go with for a high end racing sim. I've never built a PC before, so ideally I'd rather go with a prebuilt as the components I'd like to have would be a little expensive for me to just give it a shot. Would you recommend NZXT and the BLD service? Or is there something else out there I should look into.

    Ok so let's say I brick both BIOS chips, this means there's nothing I can do?
    I though you can flash it with some in circuit programming USB adapter(ICSP/ISP) and .hex file...

      It's a pain in the ass, and not 100% certain it will work. That's why there are two bios, so you don't brick your card messing with custom bios!

      I think you can also fix that using another graphics card or the IGP on the CPU. I bricked an Nvidia TI 4200 and my friend reflashed the BIOS by booting the computer using the integrated graphics on the motherboard's northbride. And the card was fixed.

    speculation: do you think nvidia nerfed these cards by power limiting them to sell off 10 series cards or just so they "didn't go too far' due to lack of competition - room to sell higher range variants down the road? force people to buy the quadro versions of turing? (is there a silicon difference between the 2080ti and the quadro parts?) - note, I have absolutely no additional evidence, this may be considered fud, but does that add-up? and if so, is all that's required is setting a new power limit and overclock to your heart's content, or is that just too much power going through this gpu?

    Just out of curiosity, how do shunt mods actually work? The net effect is a decrease in the resistance of the shunt resistor, which according to my EE 101 level knowledge (which is now decades old to boot) means either a decrease in the voltage drop across the resistor or an increase in the current flow through the resistor, but I can't figure out how either of those is helpful for making a controller think the power draw is lower than it actually is.

      This is incredibly late but the voltage controller talks to power monitoring Ics (pmic) which measures the voltage on the end of the shunt to see how much voltage is dropped to determine the current draw, the PMIC calculates power usually with a 5 miliohm resistance since that’s usually what they design around so if you increase the voltage where the pmic is detecting voltage drop (shorting the shunt or reducing the effective resistance) the pmic will determine it’s pulling lower current then the card’s designed for and allow more current

    Im new to GPU OC, but i've been watching a lot of this recently, If I do the 0.003 shunt mod, what do I need to do with the OC program, do I still need it? Would it be better to use oc bios? Will it still operated for a good amount of time like 3 years if i play 3 hours/day if it is watercooled?

      the mod is transparent to the software (except if the shunts are too low resistance, the drivers will complain and lock the card in 2d mode), you still need the software to tweak the frequency and as of now is impossible to mod the bios, your card will be fine, because the voltage is locked

      Yep and also so that they can say "Gazillion-phase power delivery™" on the box and in marketing material, even though it's completely unnecessary. It also drives up costs. Also the power phase controller chip or whatever only supports 10 phases at a time, so this card has six power phases that litarelly do nothing at all when you're playing or doing whatever you do.

    You say the VRM is good but someone said it's missing Fan headers..so that means less extra cooling ..cause that would of been useful for my side fan so it only turns in when the GPU gets hot enough

      Because of technical issues, the extra fan headers are missing only from the first batch of cards produced.

    AskGN : Power draw and power throttling on a 2080Ti
    with both ai and ray tracing cores in use? Thats a big chip and not a big node improvement the four thosand CUs alone shall draw a lot, how bad will it throttle with whole chip doing work (as advertised;))

      Yes, go ahead. But it won't function. The memory controller is inside the GPU core chip and that memory channel is disabled within.
