I'm a civilian and former military dependent. One pro you can get out of deployment is your improved work ethic; as you said, your body gets used to working 24/7. If you get out the military and do commission based jobs like real estate, like I do, where your pay is based on how hard you work and not how many hours you work, you will be a very rich person - assuming you do your job perfectly ;)
I got my work ethic from my dad - he was in the Navy for 30 years and half of my childhood he wasn't present. But I saw his work ethic and I apply it to my working life.

Really good advice. Takes me back. Damn good point on bringing a camera. I'm 52 and I still look at old pictures and cruise books no matter what you think about the military it will stay with you for LIFE!!! Appreciate the experience and live in the moment. I will agree with experiencing the culture.. I definitely partied too much while on deployment. There wasn't a port we pulled into where we did not find the drinking holes.
As a former Supply Officer, he is correct on the food for the Enlisted crew.. hence why a ton of Texas Pete is used by the crew. Cooking for a large crew everyone has their own tastes, so the recipes are bland and the sailors can add what they want to suit there tastes. Wardroom was much different, we decides on our menu and the MS (now CS) has the ability to be more creative. What did help is having a good baker!

Thiccologist you can call home as much as you want if you have enough money to pay for the pay phones. Most people just email and use Facebook to talk to family. You can bring a iPad and cell phone but you don’t get service on the ship so either of them will work for FaceTime.

20 year navy veteran here. If you join to serve ONE man but you don't give a fuck about the country. Stay a civilian!
Many long time service members have served under a president that they didn't vote for. But they also served under those that they did vote for.
I come from a military family in a military town. In the end, it doesn't really mater who is POTUS. They come and go. However if you stay in and retire, you get your benefits and WON'T MATTER HOW MANY PRESIDENTS YOU SERVED UNDER. Also, if you only serve for a short time. Get something out of the military, to set yourself up in the civilian world. In the end IT WON'T MATTER WHO YOU SERVED UNDER.
One more thing. I have some family who served as a civilian working for the military. Known as a DOD civilian. My mother served for 35 years for the Air Force. She's retired and doing fine! and guess what?
In the end, IT DIDN'T MATTER WHICH PRESIDENTS SHE SERVED UNDER!
If you're serious about joining the military, you will be welcomed into one of the most respected institutions (maybe the ONLY respected institution) of the U. S. government.
But if you're not serious, or you're letting petty politics determine YOUR LIFE FOR YOU... YOU SHOULD JUST STAY A CIVILIAN!
I got mine! I know many career and non-career military who got theirs too!
If you want yours! GET IT! If you really don't, then just stay home!
