I did two combat deployments (one with the invasion of Iraq) as an Infantryman. I came out of it with so much anger and hatred. I was devolving into a person I couldn't recognize or respect. I am a retired US Navy Commander and familiar (somewhat after all these years) with naval/military discipline & the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Now that you are 4 years into your French Foreign Legion contract, perhaps you are considering a career in the FFL? If so and if you renew your 5 years contract (re-enlist), you might have a decent career on your hands if the rigorous life suits you. As an enlisted legionnaire you could set your sights ultimately on warrant officer. A warrant officer has a pretty good life, lots of responsibility, and a chance to excel on the job. Also a decent retirement (17 years minimum?), and if you so choose, French citizenship (in addition to or in place of U.S. citizenship). Good luck. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

But when I called I was told the cutoff age was 38 or 38. I do not remember as I am now 60. I got lucky as I joined US Navy at 17 and got booted at 19 with. General Discharge under honorable at 53 I ordered my service record and someone wrote that they believed I was going thru depression. Which I actually was but did not even know it was anyway at 53 I filed a claim for anxiety and depression and now I get money from VA. I am planning to go thru vocational rehab and try to get a degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant.

Brother, You speak the truth 110%. To many people in this country these days refuse to be held accountable for their own actions. And it takes a real man to admit his mistakes. Keep up the great content brother! I sustained 7 thoracic vertebrae fractures while I was in the 82nd and was medically discharged back in 05. I've looked into the FFL myself as I'm fit and strong with no back issues since 2007. But I have a 14in long surgery scar down my spine. That would be impossible to sneak by a med board as I have a slight spine deflection angle as well. Stay safe, keep your head on a swivel.

Crazy how i have met people that popped multiple times and still got general and even with crimes. But i own it. I have appealed 3 times in 20 years and no upgrade. Lol. Of course after the Navy my life went down hill. I eventually gave my life to Jesus and i am a family man with a great govt job now. I wish i had gotten a general to have to vet status. I have always thought the FFL was awesome since i watched legionarire as a kid. Lol. Your story is inspiring. Congrats on making it to the FFL.

I saw so many careers get ruined over alcohol-related incidents and I've been in situations like that but I thank Christ I walked away because I would've been in a similar predicament, but I understand, it's hard to walk away from confrontation when you're a young guy. Now I just focus on bettering myself through education, gym, and self-improvement. I get way more satisfaction and growth out of achieving goals for myself than any night out can ever give me. Nothing good happens after midnight.

Thank you for your story, it’s very powerful. As you were going in I was retiring out. You mentioned Idaho, born and raised in Boise. Started out in the Light Infantry (7th ID(L), Fort Ord, CA in 1984. Got out after 4 years. Ended up going into the Idaho National Guard when my Dad retired. I took his spot actually. I loved working out at the Orchard Combat Training Center, it was like working on a 170k acre farm. I am a Bradley MG and worked out there in between deployments to Iraq with the 116th CBCT and in and out of the Regiment. The last 15 years were a whirl wind. I am grateful that I was blessed enough to make it through. A lot of did, but not all. I am glad that you are not only making it, but that you are helping others.
