- On this episode we compare and contrast the Christopher Ward Trident Mk3 vs. the Monta Oceanking v2 and the Ginault Ocean Rover BGW9. Many viewers requested to see these 3 side-by-side to compare and contrast against each other. Although these aren't directly comparable price point wise, I do think that many of the same customer will cross-shop these when looking for an upper tier microbrand diver under $2k. The Monta leads the way in Fit & Finish and prestige but also leads in cost, while the Ginault offers exceptional levels of execution as well but at the cost of model originality and brand identity. All very good pieces . Have c Ward previously had ginault. As monta is around 2400 dollars with taxes to be shipped to Europe I can’t really justify spending this on a micro brand.. This is galloping towards Tudor black bay price...

Fantastic review. It solidified in my mind that I want the Christopher Ward c60 mk3 black 42. I wasn't 100 percent convinced it was worth the $720 on sale, and I wasn't sure about the 42. fantastic review, the Monta is incredible, I sold mine only because it wore too large, especially the clasp, having 6.5 inch wrists . I now have the 39.5 Aquis, which fits like a dream, the Monta has slightly better finishing, especially the bezel action, though I like the Oris clasp much better, just wish it had quick adjust. I was able to live with both watches for about a week, and it was hard to part with the Monta, but fit matters more than anything for me. The Trident looks great, but design wise, it always seems CW is struggling to come up with something cohesive, there is always something off, though I like this version far more than the previous. Ginault is great, but not one original thing on it, so matters little to me.

@@AverageBros One thing I will say about the new Aquis, in terms of pure design, it is close to flawless, kind of industrial chic if that makes sense. there are issues though, of course! I would love to hear your thoughts on the new one!
Why not the Monta Triumph as that’s much smaller. They also have their new GMT Atlas in that size too.

I think I struggle with the price of the monta . With taxes it’s 2500 dollars to Europe . . It’s obviously well made watch but it’s microbrand with a selita movement and I feel this has a price sealing . I can’t see how it can possibly command a price that makes it an eye watering 1500 dollars more expensive than the CW..

Great review. I actually own the blue variant of the Christopher Ward and it really does to me, punch above its price. I have a 7 1/2in wrist and I wear it all the time. Very comfortable.

Yeah. Watches are the worst. We always want new and shiny things, but with watches it’s worse: you buy the Kermit and now you want the same exact model, Pepsi. Such a minor aesthetic difference. Only it will cost you a grand to have it.

One thing to note with lume shots and lume in general is that your night vision is most sensitive at about 507 nm. This is the green part of the spectrum and so your vision will see the CW better in the dark than the blue lumes. I'm still not sure about the hour hand on the CW though.

Im thinking whether i should buy Oris Aquis Date (fully brushed) or Christopher Ward C60 Elite 1000. Oris is a bit cheaper a specially that it is available locally and I don't need to pay extra 500 Euro import tax. What is Your opinion? Is it worth to go with CW?
Honestly, in this price range you can also pick up a Tag Heuer Aquaracer grey market (which people seem to look over for some reason). I know some people hate on Tag Heuer, but in this category its definitely a contender.
@@highanddryful After seeing one I can agree the CW has nice finishing and the bracelet mechanism is excellent for the price point. Regarding Tag, I guess it depends on where you are because in my area you can only find them at two retailers and both of them also sell Rolex. If you're into the hobby then you know the difference but locally where I am people who aren't into watches view Tag very highly because of the retailers that carry them here. With that said, I would probably pick the CW as well. I actually just bought a Tudor Black Bay which some people seem to hate as well.
Thank you very much for this video. C. Ward brings so much to the table and it's amazing considering the price. Monta seems to have that luxury level finish but the Trident is not far off. What C. Ward does great is the new case design which hugs the wrist much better than the Monta imo. Also the inovation from C. Ward like that quick release bracelet is for the price just unheard of. I feel like Monta is a great watch but also at that price point competition is stiff. I'd go with Oris for the money but to each their own. The Ginault is not worth comparing to these two imo. I almost bought a Mk3 Trident but yesterday I decided to go for the C65 Trident Automatic with the dot indices rather than the sticks or batons. I just prefer the look of dots over sticks every time. But the reason I ended up passing on the new C60 was that I’m just not a huge fan of the overall shape of the case. I think the finishing is great but the shape, particularly when looking at it head on, just isn’t very appealing to me. I don’t like the way it sort of curves in and out along the sides. It’s kind of hard to explain in a comment.
Aside from that, I think it’s an excellent watch. I probably would have gone for the C65 anyway because I tend to lean toward vintage inspired designs rather than totally modern looking ones. My C65 Auto is supposed to arrive tomorrow and I’m pretty excited about it.

Thank you very much for this video. Best watches channel on CZcams ! I owned the Ginault. I have the CW. For me, the Ginault has no place in this comparison. It's a copy from an obscure company that can not compare to CW and Monta. Ginault costs more than the CW! Unbelievable! I have a lot of respect for Monta even if their beginning disgusted me with a selling price $ 1000 more expensive than the current Ocean King model. For me, the CW wins easily if we consider the price. If the price is not a factor, the Monta wins but by a little marge. The CW offers so much more and its caseback is beautiful.
I have owned the older Trident and the Oceanking gen 2, the Monta is so much better than the Trident, there is no comparison. I have not handled the new Trident so it may be closer, but if you have handled the Monta, it rivals Tudor in finishing, in fact I like it better
GLD Edmond I trust you on this. The Monta seems very good. I owned 3 older Tridents and the new model is way better. I also owned 2 Black Bays and I find my CW more attractive and way more comfy on the wrist.

Nice review! before seeing this video I was torn between the Ginault gen2 and the Ocen King. I chose the Ginault as I think the case dimensions and bracelet will work better on my 6.5 inch wrist. I'm Gonna get the Triumph instead later on down the line. Not a fan of the CW. The hands, the indices, the logo at 9oclock, the empty space on the dial just don't do it for me. Build quality looks great though for the price.
Monta by far is the best looking.

Honestly, it would be fun but they've moved onto to supporting different channels and I don't find myself as personally motivated to keep purchasing each updated iteration. I find that is the one underlying challenge for the brand, every new release makes the previous one obsolete, there's no real collectability for previous generations, at least not yet.
The CW looks better on the wrist by orders of magnitude. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the comparison. Still the Monta for me. The CW is clearly very high quality but the looks is just kinda inconsistent, something not quite right about the handset and the logo (for me). Like that it's available in 40mm though. The Ginault whilst amazing, is just too close to home.
I totally agree, CW just cannot get this right. It is maddening because it is almost great, but there is this overall lack of cohesion with the weird logo stuff and handset, almost jarring that my eye goes right to every time I see it
I actually find this latest iteration the of the Trident to be their most thoughtful and cohesive expression of the brand's design language yet

rustydrog the CW dial looks off. It's a bit better with the dual flag logo engraved at the 12 o'clock (that's not really visible in the video) but it still looks off-balance.

I currently have an Oris Aquis, and am thinking about picking up a Trident in the red bezel version. (I thought it was interesting that you described the Trident as taking its design cues more from the Pelagos and Seamaster, rather than the Sub. I would add the Black Bay Red to that list: it’s not a coincidence that CW is offering a red bezel Trident here.)
In any event, I’ve been disappointed with the Aquis for its bezel action and lume - and it looks like those are major focal points for the update CW just did. The Monta looks great to me too, but I’m looking for something toolier right now.
I do have one question for you, though. In the video, you raised the proposition that “some people say the Monta is 95% of a Black Bay,” etc. But you never explicitly came back to that point in your conclusion. Is the Trident 95% of a Monta? Or is the Trident 95% of a Ginault, which in turn is 95% of a Monta? Or are all of these numbers misleading, because personal preference will depend more on what somebody is specifically looking for in a watch, rather than on a monotonic scoring scheme across these three?
Maybe it would help to say what the use-case is for preferring each of these. E.g., CW is least expensive, most toolish, most bang per buck. Monta is most expensive, most high-quality, most directly comparable to luxury brands. And Ginault is the closest to a classic Sub in design and proportions. YMMV.
I have the new Aquis and I agree about the bezel action, but the lume on mine seems really good, what is it about yours that is poor, brightness or longevity?
GLD Edmond The intensity is okay initially on a full charge, but it dims quickly. It is enough to last thru the night in a dark room, but never as bright as I would like it to be. My point of comparison is a Breitling chronograph, which I didn’t expect to have useful lume, but which is considerably stronger than the Aquis-easily visible all night. There’s always something to complain about, I guess.

I am actually sending mine in to see if they can tighten, or stiffen the play up a bit. It does click smoothly, and has no play, but my coat, or shirt sleeve can actually move it, it is that light, drives me mad!

The Ginault is too much of a fake Rolex to compete with these other two. The Monta and Ward at least look somewhat original. Good vid though, I enjoyed it.

Great video! Trying to decide between that and heritage black bay (41mm in house version). If you, or anyone In this chat care to chime in with opinions it would be very helpful. It would be between oceanking on a bracelet or bb on leather ( I do not like the 22mm lug width bracelet. Looks little too big). I am able to get bb new from an authorized jeweler /dealer with good discount (mid 2k’s). What are your thoughts? Is the monta that good? Or should I just spend the extra 7-800 or so bucks for the bb ? Never felt monta in person. Bb, looks and feels great. Thanks for listening !
Nick Lyr I owned two Black Bay 41mm in house. I sold both. This watch is too thick for everyday use. I would go with the Monta to please me and not to impress others.
maitrehg that is my only concern with it, and why I have waited. Perhaps now with new movement they can make the 41mm version a bit slimmer, because for me I think the diameter is fine. I have not tried on the bb58, but I think 39mm is too small for me. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated

My wrist is 7.25 and I wear and love the 40mm. You have to remember the Rolex sub has been 40mm for decades, its a great size most wrist sized, the industry is always behind and is gradually decreasing watch sizes I think too.
I will wait till CW fixes 2 things... 1) The new hand design is not that appealing - especially the short and stout looking hour hand and both hour & minute hands overlapping each other at the center due to the elongation 2) Make the twin flag at 12 more prominent. Can even be seen 90% of the times.
It looks slightly too big for that shape and I'm not in love with the Side branding. The other two look more refined. Props to the Monta for original design.
CW will be removing the brand name and emphasizing the twin flag for all dials within the next 18 months.

I know this may sound crazy but would you say the Monta is on par with a Rolex Submariner? I’ve always owned Rolex and the values and shortage are irritating and put a bad taste in my mouth about Rolex.

Monta seems over priced for what you get.
Ginault OR2 is likely the best of the three in terms of overall quality/value if you want a true Sub homage. But then, I don’t care that it’s an homage either. I think they do it well.

the Monta is insane value for money (which is kinda funny for a 2k diver :)), the other 2 can't come even close. 2 other that "kill" the Trident in the value proposition are, imo, the Orion Calamity and the Tourby Lawless (still don't understand why they don't upgrade to the 2892 and raise the price by 100-150€. they already offer the 2892 with the GMT complication on a Lawless variant for 300€ more. if they put the 2892 and shaved 1mm of thickness, with their fit&finish and customization they could be a serious competitor to the Monta)
anyway, i've been subscribed for a while and one thing has been bothering me since forever: could you lower the volume of the music, particularly at the end? i always end up waking someone up when i'm watching your vids 'cause i always forget about the volume spike :(

The Trident costs about $500 less than the Calamity or the Tourby; it's not exactly apples to apples with value proposition.

first, my perspective is from a EU buyer (if that wasn't obvious from using Euros as the currency). here the Tourby is 1250 vs the nearly 1000 (995 iirc) for the Trident.
second, i wasn't comparing them as if they're in the same price category, i was drawing a parallel to the Monta, which was used as a point of comparison in the video, for watches that don't cost THAT much more, but offer a very significant upgrade.

The Monta is extremely overpriced for the specs and finishing. Ginault is another unoriginal wannabe. CW hands down winner among these watches. I have purchased 2 in the last 6 months and love them both.

I've always felt Oris was overpriced. I have held them in store and I just can't get over how clunky they are. Even my steinhart looks and feels much nicer than Oris watches.
I am surprised you call the Oris clunky, I have the 39.5 Aquis and to me it is industrial/sleek, close to perfect in design. That being said the Monta is slightly better finished, with a lot better bezel action
C60 gets all the shot in this video, is the only non homage watch from here, that makes it unique....i'm not into homage watches....
not really, the Oceanking isn't a homage at all either and technically, has never been remotely a homage to any specific existing model during its entire development and release history vs. the C60, that was openly a homage to many references in previous iterations, this being the generation to cut the last few ties to design elements from other references
Average Bros , you are right regarding Oceanking, I’ve done my homework after I wrote the comment, but I still keep my idea regarding C60, even though Oceanking have a better movement I believe is a bit pricey for what is has to offer, whilst the C60 is more affordable and much cheaper when it comes to the servicing.....regards

Ginault customer service is terrible! Wanted to send my OR1 in for service and bezel repair, never responded. Avoid them and get something that manufacturers will service.
A Ginault is a polished turd. Chinese Rolex knock-off imported and polished and quality controlled in the US. Meanwhile the CW and Monta are their own thing. In particular, the CW has a highly distinctive case and their own design for an adjustable clasp -- unlike the Ginault which is straight up Rolex knock-off.
Ginault just crazy price for crap movement.

I am surprised with your review as you never mention about the Ceramic Bezel of the Trident which others two don't have. Are all of you CZcamsrs always sells one particular brands like you selling the Monta? Go to hell with your comparison/ review. CW here is the best choice that money can buy.
