Going off this video it seems a slouchy/unstructured collar may not be your preference but def give James Perse crews a try.. just for how well they drape. Try em in any of their jersey knits (my pref) or their classic. Their crews have the best drape (and fit) of any cotton shirt I own, their non-dark colors fades beautifully, they look good used, new, true to size and oversized by one.
The only issues are that the hems & collar needs ironing for a neater look and certain stains can easily leave chemical discolorations. It doesn't have a vintage look you may be looking for but for a modern-style tee its worth trying out.

  • @mushymist
    @mushymist Před měsícem +37

Regarding the diagonally ribbed collar of the Real McCoy's tee, the sewist in me guesses that they took their normal ribbing fabric and cut it on the bias (AKA they cut strips of ribbing at a 45-degree angle, rather than parallel or perpendicular to the roll of fabric). This is done a lot to make "edge binding" that will wrap around the raw edges of fabric (like on the inside of an unlined coat). Bias-cut binding stretches more than straight-cut binding, which helps it go around curves (like the neckline) smoothly, without buckling, waving, distorting, etc. Long story short: they probably did it so that the collar would stretch and lay flat against the wearer's neck.

I lived in T-shirts for 45 yrs as a surfer. The vintage Stedman Hi Cru was the best. Its now grailed on several websites and is even found on Etsy. I now love synthetic light Ts. My favorites you might look into are the Swiftland shirt in both short sleeve or long at REI, the FLX shirts from Kohls, Eddie Bauer Resolution Ts, Vissla the surfing brand has awesome stuff and Patagonia has both the Capilene and Responsibili-Tee shirts. You won't do yourself wrong with any of these. I myself have at least two or more each of all the above and some in various long sleeve and 1/4 zip versions. I use some when hiking as base layers in winter but they can double as light outerwear in long sleeve over another T when paired with a vest.

One slight problem I have found more recently (I can't be 100% certain, it's just my experience) is that the quality has dipped a bit. The newer shirts I have from that range have shrunk more than some of the ones I've had for many years.

the whitesville 2-pack are locally (California) available for $95 + tax. I actually found an ebay seller who had multiple sizes and colors, and was able to buy my large black 2-pack for under $71 including tax and shipping. At that price point, they are my absolute favorite all around shirt.
my favorite fitting tshirt (I'm a very slender build) is the Samurai jeans 2 pack shirts. (But, again, bought in black)

Great video. I've bought quite a few expensive t shirts in recent years- The Merz B, Whitesville, Studio D'Artisan loopwheel and UES Ramanyana... and i came to the same realisation that my favourite one is the Asket one that I've had for years! Going to stick to that brand going forward.

Asket has been one of my favorite brands for years. I got a few of their T-shirts 5 years ago and they have been holding up great. No discoloration, no holes, still fitting the same. The super long egyptian cotton is really nice and durable and Asket is super sustainable. Great all around the board
    Can't recommend them enough!

The Uniqlo Crewneck shirt is rly nice but it’s a bit too thick for summer. The Uniqlo Supima is rly light and nice for summer but it doesn’t last long. The Uniqlo Oversized Airism is supposed to be breathable but I’ve noticed it holds the sweat and you’re sitting there with a visibly sweat through shirt.

It's funny that the Merz B shirt got so popular after the Bear. I got obsessed with owning a Merz B Henley after seeing Ryan Gosling wearing them in the movie Drive years ago. I could never pull the trigger on one though. One thing I have learned is these shirts look good because of the physique underneath them. If you get relatively jacked then pretty much everything looks good. Now I just need to dust off my old weights lol

If it’s the same exact Costco’s Kirkland T-shirt that bought (and returned) years ago, I didn’t care much for them. Long, but too thick - would be terribly uncomfortable during hotter/warmer days. I decided to go with Jockey (95% cotton/5% elastin or whatever stretch material from Target. More expensive, but simply more comfortable.

I second the nod for Bronson Loopwheeled Tubular Athletic T-Shirt. Hands down, by the far THE BEST value for money loopwheeled t-shirt (although they're not using old timey loopwheel machines, instead they have modern tubular knit process that produces similar fabric but more efficiently). My vote for best overall t-shirt is The Flat Head THC. I've looked at and sampled almost every T on this list and many others, including the Merz B 215 (which I really don't like), and for me, there's nothing that's even a close 2nd, forget even a contender. It's definitely not for everyone, though.

Try the “Regular Fit 9.3 oz Jersey Crewneck Tubular T-Shirt” by Time Catcher that you can buy through olderbest. It’s amazing value for money - £18 and it’s heavyweight, tubular knit and allegedly loopwheel but I’m not to sure if it actually is or not. I’ve had mine for about a year and it only gets better with each wash. For sizing I’m 6ft1 and 86kg and a L is great - but the customer service team is brilliant with advice as the sizes are primarily for a Chinese customer base

my take on some uniqlo t-shirt
    1. Their supima-line are soft but it will got fade and sag quite fast (compare with other brand cotton-T I have in the same prior)
    2. (Some) Uniqlo U T-shirt hold up much better than their supima-line.
My general rule when buy Uniqlo, stay away from any 100% cotton that stretch.

Asket! I have a T-shirt from 5 years ago & it still looks and feels like new. Still, I think 45€ ($55) is a bit much though I've never seen anything as silky/dense. Also I think I remember seeing a post about how Asket sometimes changes the fit on their products but keeps the product page/name the same.
I just bought a bunch of Arket (different company) T-shirts and am a huge fan of the mid-weight (220 gsm) and slightly prefer it to the Asket since it's not as thin. The lightweight is okay but nothing special and heavyweight felt similar to basic Uniqlo stuff. Retail price is 29€, or 25€ with a university discount which is nice. Not sure how they'll hold up long term but I'm hopeful.
