WT - Analyze This! P-51D high-alt duels in Arcade

  • Our guest pilot koley66 re-enacts some history in this video, taking his P-51D-20 against its traditional opponents - the FW190 A-5, the Bf109 G-2 and of course the Spitfire LF Mk IX ... they did fight Spits in WW2 didn't they?
    Anyway, the Mustang is one of the most unforgiving planes in the game, punishing the smallest of mistakes - usually with a firey death & that's what happened here. I look at koley's mistakes as well as the many good aspects of his flying, and see what other choices he could have made to improve his chances in these battles.
    The music is by Dire Straits.

    Hey wow, it's Alaric! I met that guy a while ago. He is an exceptionally good player -- one of the best pilots I've flown with, and quite aggressive. And the 109 G2 is his specialty, so he's very much on his home turf in this match.
    I'm paused at the moment, and don't yet know how the fight turns out... but I can already tell you, Koley is up against a really serious threat here and shouldn't feel bad if he gets outplayed. The bar is high.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +1

      +apieceofstring Spoiler alert - Koley did catch him pulling out of a dive with a perfect deflection setup that should have seen Alaric shot down, but it failed due to wobbly aim.

    • @apieceofstring
      @apieceofstring Před 8 lety

      +long5hot Yeah Koley did better than I expected.
      Alaric definitely allowed an attack there, but then again, he can be surprisingly slippery when pressed. This guy got to the top dozen or so in a recent competition -- well past to the point where it went from 2v2 to 1v1. So... I'll reserve judgement on whether it would have been a sure kill for a mouse user. It certainly _looked_ like a solid position, but then again, for a lot of people, that's the last thing they think before Alaric reverses on them. /shrug
      On the other hand, in his regular arcade posture, Alaric is not at all a safe flyer. He's the sort of person who gets himself into trouble just to see if he can get out of it again (so his K/D doesn't really reflect his skill level). So anyway it may well be he really bit off more than he could chew there, and the shot that Koley got was better than Alaric had meant to allow.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +2

      +apieceofstring I should have qualified that by saying "a mouse user with decent aim" as Alaric was a very hittable target for several seconds. I'd probably have missed :)
      I did think Alaric was going to scissors straight back & get a shot at koley immediately after that attack, but he had trouble doing so - I think his G2 was really struggling at those altitudes compared to the D-20.

      My apologies for a necro, but wow, this is so cool on so many levels it has me giddy! First, long5hot, thank you for some very clean and informative videos, with actual help for players. String, I have to know who you are! So few people know that information about me in that detail, and far fewer 3 years ago. This video has to be from shortly after the Normandy Tournament, and the fact I had gunpods?! mounted means this was still during "Phase 1" of my flight style rewrite (by Phase 2, I had forever given up gunpods). I have no old footage from this period, so it was quite cool seeing the old me fight from a different perspective.

    I'm a PS4 player with a channel of my own, this is not clumsy PS4 controls, but simply bad aim on this guy's part. A mouse is better, I'm not saying that it is not, it took me a long time of customizing the controls to get them air worthy. I actually prefer very high sensitivity, as it allows me to make slight adjustments, yet be able to snap the aim when needed. Flying the P51 is your first mistake, it's fm is near broken and does not represent the plane's real performance. The cannon P51 flies nearly the same with it's weak Allison engine as the P51D with it's Merlin. Well, that was a rant, but a well advised one. Merry Christmas Warthunderers!

    I never really know what to add to your 'Analyze this' videos, because you pretty much say it all anyway. It was a good showing (even if that head-on was not the best strategy, he nailed it quite beautifully). He had the same problem I often come up against. Do I hedge my bets towards them not having the energy to keep up with me, or do I cut my losses and try for the head-on that might be my best-case scenario? In the P-51's, you can never quite tell, because even an initial speed advantage could end with you losing for how badly the plane performs. He probably just wasn't used to it's superior energy abilities at such a high altitude.
    I will say this though, you are absolutely right about the XP-55. Took that thing out earlier... good gravy it's a dream to fly, now! So smooth and precise-it's heavenly! I'm so glad I bought one. Now to just enjoy it before they nerf it again. I need to see how well the J7 flies now, though that thing's still practically stock, so I don't know if I a bit of turning will really help me much.
    Also... did they increase the envelope for black-outs? They seem to be far less common than they were when the mechanic was introduced... if they even effect arcade at all anymore.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +Breakfast Yes the blackout envelope was relaxed a lot for Arcade, about 2 weeks after 1.51 came out. In my testing (I used a Spit IIa as I did in my video on G-LOC with zero crew) it takes roughly twice as long to initiate G-LOC now (you need to hold a turn over 410km/h for more than 360 degrees), and you recover from it twice as fast.

    Might be a good series someday to put yourself in the situation of a disadvantaged pilot and show how to reverse it or mitigate the issues.
    For example. Low p47 bounced by higher 109. That's extreme but you get my point. In this scenario is of been always extending away and hoping for high speeds off angle approaches and snap rolls.

    • @mikehammer5380
      @mikehammer5380 Před 8 lety +1

      Or alternatively. To bait him lower an force a 2v1 or try to make him have. A lapse in judgement that would let me take a blind swipe at him.

    @Mattac0n Před 8 lety +3

    May I say this is extremely entertaining to watch with Auto Subtitles on? :p Otherwise, always very useful and pleasant to see this series again. It also definitely highlights how the cards are stacked against a PS4 player on controller *and* the Mustang line in general.

    @llmari1048 Před 8 lety +1

    +long5hot do you think perfecting flying out in the Mustang or other under performing planes, would make you a better, more aware and more patient pilot?

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +2

      +llmari Excellent question. I think flying a plane like the Mustang will certainly make you a better judge of energy differentials, it'll make you developing good habits to maneuver your plane smoothly to avoid losing speed, and it'll enforce a discipline to only fly within the strict limitations of the plane.
      Those are all good things, but there's a flipside. You'll probably forget a lot about turnfighting & energy fighting techniques (other than simple bnz's and rope a dopes) because the plane simply isn't capable of them. Stick to the Mustang long enough and you'll probably have a timid and defensive outlook ingrained into your psyche, and you won't know how to dominate a battle if you ever flew a more OP fighter as all the aggression & risk-taking instincts would have been bled out of you.

    would really like a vid on minimizing the PS4 disadvantages without surrendering the DS4 control.... I just can't give up the haptic feedback, but its impossible to maintain half of the situational awareness of a mouse user.

  • @touristguy87
    @touristguy87 Před 8 lety +1

    Another excellent WT video...really seemed that the Mustang pilot was too aggressive, constantly trying to engage when he didn't even have a clear advantage. Does he quite understand the concept of rope-a-dope?
    Or at least...flying a heavy unmaneuverable gas-can of a fighter with wing-mounted 50 cals against a light easily-maneuvered well-armored fighter with a 20mm cannon in the nose...why would you want to get into vertical turn fights with a 109? The only way the Mustang would win would be to bleed the 109 down into near-zero energy so that he can put a long gun burst on it, meaning you really need to fly against a clueless pilot. The opposite proved to be the case here.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +touristguy87 Yes I agree that he was too aggressive. I was thinking while watching it that he was fighting as if he was in a 109 himself, or maybe a corsair. His 2nd battle against that 109 was a lot better than his 1st though.

    as a ps4 players myself, I would suggest the pilot adjusting his sensitivity settings...IMHO they appear to be too high.
    also, ps4 players should consider control freeks. they are marketed to FPS players but they help immensely with minute precision movements. and CHEAP. they clip on top of the sticks and are easily removed in a second. Best buy & GameStop carry them in the U.S., however if ordered online 10% discount codes are everywhere. almost every FPS youtuber of any size has a discount code.

  • @TheSphynx311

    I'm still trying to figure out if he really is using the PS4 controller... There are times the cursor moves like a mouse aimer and he seems to be able to zoom in and out quite easily. He also has the ability to use the manual control surfaces quite easily. He may be using a controller and if he is I need to know his setup, because there are things I would love to bind to the controller that I haven't been able to figure out.

    • @K-TRAIN_MUSIC
      @K-TRAIN_MUSIC Před 8 lety

      +TheSphynx311 I keep a low sensitivity on my sticks (around 20%) and leave the touchpad at a high sensitivity. when ever i need to move the cursor freely i use the touchpad and for acute movements I will use the stick.

    @zxbc1 Před 8 lety

    Also, "snap rolling" without using rudder on most planes is going to be too slow/predictable to evade an experienced pilot in head on. In the head on attack where he lost his plane to the FW, he had no elevator effectiveness (due to speed and terrible plane), he should use a combination of full rudder and full elevator together with full roll to have a good chance.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +zxbc Very true, though he was indeed using rudder on both snaprolls vs the 190. He was almost hit the first time around, and rolling in the same direction was maybe a little predictable the second time especially as he was much slower.

    • @zxbc1
      @zxbc1 Před 8 lety

      long5hot Yeah now I see he was using rudder, but his plane was just too clunky. Doing head on against 190s is just silly, they just have too many guns and too fast roll rate to lose.

  • @lagstabsop6590
    @lagstabsop6590 Před 8 lety

    Hey Long5hot this may sound stupid but, what's a jack-in-the-box-Fw190?

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +1

      +Keiji Inai Its a FW190 that's lower than you, and keeps diving then using the dive speed to suddenly climb and attack you from below. You can't ignore it as it'll shoot you down from over 1km away if you fly straight and you can't easily shoot it down if its pilot doesn't let his plane stall & goes into a rolling dive if you attack.

    • @lagstabsop6590
      @lagstabsop6590 Před 8 lety

      +long5hot hey long, I got another question: why can't I dive while flying any of the p47's(even the German p47)? If I pass 800 or 850km/h on a dive the plane completely locks up, but, why? That shouldn't be happening on arcade, do you know why?
