Alexander Volkanovski has quickly risen as one of the best UFC Champions in not only the current UFC roster but also one of the best UFC champions of all time. He has dominated the featherweight division of the UFC and has only seemed to get better with time. He has fought and defeated massive UFC names like Max Holloway, the Korean Zombie, Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes, Brian Ortega, Yair Rodrigues, and many more fighters. He is in the conversation, at least in terms of mixed martial arts skills when you compare him to names like Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Demetrious Johnson, and all our favorite UFC fighters. In this video, I, Lionel Rivera break down what makes Alexander Volkanovski such a great UFC fighter and how he will likely change the sport of MMA forever

Who’s watching this after he just got knocked out
🥲
Idk what you're talking about
Which time :,(
...Twice.
@@bad2dabone146 🥲
If he beats Topuria. I really dont see anyone at 145 taking the belt from him except the undefeated Father Time.
Father time gets all great fighters
He is 35 now. I hope he retired soon... I don't want to see him defeated by the age like Tony, Anderson Silva, Usman.
He must thinking to retired soon..
I know he won't to be like Khabib who ran away at 32, but 35+ is a very good reason to retired, it's enough to proof him the GOAT
@@lastlavender5351 why u gotta be so disrespectful? (or racist, not sure) Calling it "run away" when it is very clearly explained why he retired and it was also very clear that noone was beating him at that point in time in lightweight. Of course he retired very early, but he didnt "run away" and you know it. you are just a hater and the reason why mma community is so trash even tho it should be a respectful sport
If he sticks around too long I would pick Evloev or Allen to take the belt whenever he starts declining. But I also dont think he will decline like most fighters do at 35, because he started mma so much later than most people.
except GSP! (though he came close)@@lionelrivera_MMA
I truly feel like if volkanovski has one or two more title defense he's in the goat conversation if he's not already
A lot of people think he's there already👀
@@lionelrivera_MMA he is there. He won from Islam. That makes him deff the goat next to Bones.
He's there already. He in the same tier as GSP
I think he is top 4 or 5
Hes super super good but thats such a stretch jon jones is the goat by miles
Who else is watching now that Volk just took the Islam fight on with less than 2 weeks notice?
Made it here somehow, so yeah I'm here now. Go Volk!
Let’s goooo
I like how you led with the excuse theyll be giving out 😂will be a good fight tho
@@fragment97 Well hopefully they don't give Islam the win even if he loses like they did last time :) Especially since Islam would never take a fight on short notice cause he's too puss and can't lose the weight w/o IV cheating
Spittin straight facts, last time they were crying for an IV they couldn't prove. Izzy even retired after he lost to Strickland. This are true non championship mentality. Alexander the great my ass, he was crying about an IV for his loss. Sean Strickland said it best, line em up, you either knock em down or get knocked down. I'll stand behind Islam win or lose, 12 days notice or not but we all know Volk was not sitting on the couch and he was in training. Dana White ain't foolin nobody with his BS tactics.@@fragment97
Here just as Volk accepted Islam again on 10 days notice. What a beast
Oh yes let's go!
Head kick 😢 lol
Big mistake
@@usemynamem5906 wow tell me how you guys do it? How did you know what was to come?
@@mjisurdad He’s taking a short notice fight against a bigger guy who is a champ that he lost to last time on top of that he just got done with surgery recovery about a month ago there is no reason for him to be taking this risky of a fight he messed up
Makhachev fan here, but also a fan of Volk - even after the devastating KO, he’s still champion and will always be a true warrior. We should all appreciate how “Great” he truly is. Same with Makhachev who is completely elite. These are those who demand respect.
Alexander Volkanovski is a WASTED power. He's got power and stamina, but if you pay attention to his stikes colsely he's quite sloppy. That's why he couldn't K.O. Islam the 1st fight. He needs ACCURACY. Islam show him what ACCURACY is.
@@ExtremeForever If he was sloppy, he wouldn't be the featherweight GOAT.
If we go into the SPECIFICS and his history he outpowerpower alot of his opponents with his cradio and stamina, but straight clean shot to KO or put somebody to SLEEP that's what he don't got. Don't get me wrong. I ROOTED for him, but I was worried he might not get a clean shot to KO Islam and when I watch the fight throughly that's exactly why he couldn't KO him even though he got some good shots. @@GrubKiller436
How many rounds does it take for Khabib to submit Islam? Thought experiment.
@@ExtremeForever Can you name any featherweights with higher strike accuracy than Volk? Cause he's #2 all time so I really have no idea what you're talking about or how your point is making sense here.
Awesome documentary. He always comes with an excellent strategy backed by rigorous training sessions. His fights are like game of chess. And let's not forget that he enters the cage with the endurance of 12 rounds of 3min each like it's a boxing match.
12 rounds is a warmup for volk, let's be honest
True, indeed. GOAT
Bald Volk was truly prepared¡🤫
@@akashshelke5330 goats don't get their head kicked off by grapplers. He's a beast, but let's just relax on all the goat talk.
@@jamesrich1DAYNJ I guess we may have to stop GOAT talk now. But still can be called as Featherweight GOAT.
The man truly is a machine
undoubtedly
Anyone who is older and trained heavily when they are young will certainly understand what I'm about to say: Volk was once 200 lbs. No matter what you may think, your body does NOT forget that. He is obviously not AS strong as he was at this size, but he is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than say, you or I if we were his build as a result of this training. Strength is the last thing to go, and the more you focus on building it, the longer it takes to leave you.
Short king👑
Exactly then,an is so skilled people seem to forget he’s bloody strong af
*214 pounds 🙂
That’s also why he was able to quickly bulk up to fight Islam at 155 and then immediately cut that muscle to fight Yair at 145. It takes him very little effort for him to gain/cut 10 pounds of muscle since his body is used to massive weight fluctuations
That's why he's the answer for the dagestani wrestling. His dominant physical background rivals Islam's life long training because Alex all his life has had better nutrition and access to higher level training facilities
Man that guillotine escape was legendary!! Not only did he barely make it out of danger zone (No mercy reference) but then he came back with a barrage of punches! Like where the hell did he get his wind and energy from! That’s pure wolverine mode right there!!
That 3rd round was incredible. Not only did he get out but he knew that he had to make a statement to not only win back the round but demolish Ortegas confidence. Almost choked out? Refusal to accept failure!!!!
I feel like I'm the only one who sees it as Ortegas arms being gassed and him letting it go more than Volk forcing his way out
@@cbroo69 probably, but that's still due to Volk refusing to quit and pushing hard against him. Maybe it isnt a smooth escape but it was still an escape
Tasmanian Devil like dude. They BAD!
@@cbroo69 I thinks its both Volks neck and Orteggas arm. The ratio between which of the two was the deciding factor is up for debate but volks neck definitely fought Ortegas arm and well we know the rest.
Freakin brilliant. Hes been overlooked his whole career and is now just getting his flowers man. Dude is a beast. The Ilia fight will be special. Looking forward to see how his story continues
🤝💯
His story is actually amazing I am tempted to mention that that he still needs to beat Islam first cause I feel like he still needs to prove that he is indeed the Goat, cause that is his only loss right now on a perfect record
@@legiondarkstar5014 looks like the dream timeline is shaping up now... who would've thought. Let's go volko🐐

You arent wrong but the timing is hilarious. 😂
Still a a great champion though.
Not only did Volk win fights at Welterweight, he fought and won at *Middleweight* as an amateur.
I know these Volkanovski type of guys from football. Small guys but they're like a bundle of muscle and generate loads of explosiveness and power.
I remember max Holloway teaching Ortega how to block punches lol
Ain’t no way he change the title of this vid after Volk lost💀💀💀
what was it before??
@@lesliechow3793 i think it was along the lines of "Why Alexander Volkanovski is Topuria's Greatest Nightmare" i think
Just to put this into perspective, Volk and Conor are the same age. And Volk debuted in 2016, bit insane how late he started and how great he got.
Sometimes you got it or you dont. Sage northcutt had one of the best support systems and family upbringing. Training since a really young age and that did not equate to the success many thought he'd have.
He won his title in December 2019 ! Almost four years as champion that’s impressive
I put Demetrious Johnson as the greatest p4p right now (just my opinion, not saying its fact). Volkanovski isn't far behind though. Dude is a monster. Mad respect to him.
*Edit: great video too! Definitely deserves some views.
Thank you my friend. I love dj as well
Agreed. DJ is the greatest fighter ever but if there is anyone right now that is doing what DJ did to his division, it's Volk.

@@Whereee971 You can't really say "Alexander is LEVELS above every UFC champ" when he already lost to one of the champs. But the thing that didn't age well was, he got knocked out in round 1 to the guy he previously lost to. I mean, you can't say "He is levels above everyone" but lose against the same dude twice. Lionel Rivera was glazing Volk too much since UFC 284. Volk is really good, don't get me wrong. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
@@silentassassin423 Exactly Volk is one of the best fighters on the planet right now but Jon Jones and Islam are two champions that are levels ahead of Volk.

Great video! Volt needs more recognition here in Australia, not only is he an amazing fighter but he is also an amazing role model, well spoken and an all round great bloke. Volkanovski is an inspiration to all the short kings out there
The thing that separates Volk from the rest of the champions the most is his ability to learn and improve, you see it far clearer in him, from fight to fight, than you do with the rest of the champions

I was curious how exactly someone who looked like a pretty seasoned video essayist would approach a fighter like Volk. He’s certainly become my favourite in the UFC, and I hadn’t seen anything yet that really captured who he was and is on the big picture scale.
Suffice to say, this was a hell of an introduction to your channel. Absolutely worth every second I watched. At first glance, seeing the total runtime, I wasn’t sure I’d finish the whole video in a single sitting… but every single piece of this video just fit together too well to stop. The editing, the variety of sources, the quality of your script and its focus points, the presentation and the core premise - all of it works like a well-oiled machine.
