Building a £10 cyclocross frame into a race machine.
Welcome to the first Time for Bike video in quite some time - and boy is it a good one!
The frame was new and was an unbelievable buy form eBay for just £10.50 (about $12.00). I really did not think that the seller would actually sell it to me for that even though I won it fair and square - but he was true to his word and I collected it! Next I thought was it stolen - well from what I could make out he was a genuine guy that even introduced me to his lovely mother when handing the bike over. Also this chap seemed to know a lot about the local cyclocross scene. I have always wanted a good quality cyclocross bike, especially a disc brake bike with a 11sp, hydraulic Shimano setup. Some great parts were sourced over a little while to let me build up this bike from a mix of quality used parts and also new. The video has full breakdown of the bikes costs and this extended video will show you each and every one of them being installed. The frame came with a headset, bottom bracket, seat post and clamp, and also a stem and associated spacers. This bike was not ridden at all until the race day that followed it final completion the day before. Obviously not the best prep as there was no time to test - however the bike rode well and stayed in one piece allowing for a mid field finish. A great start to its muddy life! Please tag along to watch the 'Building a £10 cyclocross frame into a race machine' and see if you could build this amazing bike for less.
If you have enjoyed watching this then please make a comment, live the video, subscribed to the channel and hit the bell icon! It would also be great if you could have a look at my other video’ on the channel - it really helps the cause. Most off all, take care and happy cycling!

    Klein's are beautiful, too bad they are such a harsh ride for my old bones. I would have preferred to see build up with polished silver Shimano groupset such as DA7700 or 7800. The all black components just aren't as classy.

      @timeforbikes Před 8 dny

      Thanks for stopping by and commenting. You are right that they can produce a harsh ride. However, that could be ironed out a little if you used modern tubeless rims and ran them at lower pressures. Also I totally understand your view on groupsets. 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and all that, this was just my modern take and it's great that my race wheels from my other bike fit this bike with no need to change cassette. Also the shifting and braking performance is amazing. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes Před 17 dny

      A really good question. The biggest problem has been the frame size. An XL is too big for me as a gravel bike. As an MTB it could work but it's still quite big. I have an Adroit frame of a very similar era that is a large and is excellent as an MTB, but once again as a gravel bike it could still be a little too big. As for components, I would say hydraulic disc brakes would be an excellent addition. Everything else has been great! Best of luck with the build, I bet you will love it. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

      @@timeforbikes guess i had to really take it apart a bit, redid it, properly cleaned and dried and then polished the metal. But im still a bit confused as to how small dents in paint on parts like the derailleurs could be fixed without having rust come back instantly. I guess ill just pick up a small brush and repaint the bits. Otherwise i have a freewheel where it was also hard to not have the rust return.

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes Před 18 dny

      @@KeesFluitman unfortunately once it is cleaned of rust it is then open for it to return. This technique is only really a temporary fix. The chrome layer that is added at the factory is damaged by this point and the metal underneath is what rusts. Without some kind of repair or covering of that layer the rust will return. You would need to keep repeating this process once the rust becomes noticeable again. Obviously keep the chrome as dry as possible to help stop its return. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    Why do blokes like their bikes so much? 2 reasons I reckon. Old bikes are pieces of art made by craftsmen. And when you ride them, you are putting your life on the line; if they break, you could be killed in the crash. Andy is one lucky bloke. I have an almost identical bike in similar not quite so bad condition. My bike is brown. Same badge though. I purchased it second hand 1980. I was going to sell it. No way now. I will bring it back to as good as I can. I used to work on it after reading Richard’s Bike Book. I can do that again. I’m inspired. Thanks for the video; lovely finish. Nice build! I would like to ask you if any shimano (or Sram) MTB crankset will work as well as XT tour used. The problem with GRX is the chain line?

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes Před měsícem

      Thanks for the comment. The main problem is the q factor with this frame. A mtb frame like this is wide at the point on the chain stays where the crank arms pass closely. This is due to the need of the frame to accommodate a wider tyre. MTB chainsets allow for this but gravel chainsets may not, and I suspect in most if not all cases would not leading to the pedal arm and crank arms to pass too close to.the MTB frame and snag upon it. If you have not watched all.the episodes of this build the have a look again as I explain it all.there. hope this helps. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

I was sure to be able to install it as you did, but in my bike it's impossible to install a 40t crank as it touch the frame. The BB is a standard BSA. Did you install a spacer on the drive side? Are your BB cups wider than the average? I really don't know why It's impossible to install it!

    After watching this video and several others decided to attempt to repair my Edge 520 with shortened battery life. One video was comedic as they were using hot glue instead of heat shrink to insulate wires, other video said to open Edge unit prior to ordering battery in case screen broken during separation which is how I proceeded. Could have saved $10 if willing to wait a month or two longer for a battery. Following this video as a guide, I only had one issue, battery plug would not lock/latch on to pcb mating connector. Very small locking connectors and vison declining with age, after frustration and taking a day break I used my soldering gun to heat fuse the two connectors together. Seems to work without issue so far, hopefully added several years life to my unit that is eight this year. Used black Permatex silicone to seal unit. Thank you Time For Bikes.

    I have the same bike in the orange/red/yellow color. Love it! I'm definitely an amateur cyclist though so I'm learning as I go moves mostly stock, and like my vehicles, I sun to get rid of any shiny chrome like metal, even polished aluminum of I can. Being on a budget, I started by painting the head tribe spacers black (properly with an etching primer, filet primer, then flat black. I was originally going to carry this on throughout the bike but decided otherwise, especially when I realized titanium cannot be painted while stepping on the dura ace seat stem. Like yours, mine is in pretty good shape, only a couple little dings in the paint which I addressed with either red or yellow paint open to do any potential rust. I'm aware that aluminum shouldn't rust but I've seen otherwise depending on the alloys. The items you choose for your build, all of them, are basically the way I imagine I would like to see my bike having. I've deemed painting anything other than spacers and rims beyond my capabilities for the professional results I demand. If you don't mind, side from wheels and tires, what did everything come out to? Would you have done anything different? Congrats on the build,I think it looks cleaner than it did when it was new!

      So sorry for the lack of reply! Thanks for telling me all about your Klein. Thanks for the comments on the bike, I am happy with it and come summer once again I will have it back out. This build was a little while ago now and I am just not sure what it all came to now. The prices were still very high for cycling bits then so I paid a fairly hefty sum for all the bits. Overall its a lovely bike and rides surprisingly well against even against the more modern bikes. I just need to get fit now and it will go much faster! Thanks for stopping by, take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    Thanks for the video, would replacing a Garmin 530 Edge battery be the same procedure? Regards.

      @timeforbikes Před 6 měsíci

      Good question. I have not opened up a 530 before but can only imagine it would be similar. I have been debating making a video on a 530 but need to get my hands on one. If you need to open up a 530 then maybe do the same kind of procedure and just take your time. Best of luck! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    You always need to return your tourque wrench to 0 so it doesn’t stretch out the spring and leave things at a smaller tourque than you want

    Great info on the two Brands, I'm always interested in ' the fit' details of a clothing garment, as more & more of us are buying online. I have just bought some dhb blok thermal tights, to use when I'm out winter mountain bike riding. I also will be wearing some Alpinestar Tahoe over pants.....this helps with the mud, rain and even the snow, here in North Yorkshire 😂. I've ordered a large in the dhb's ....Im only 5'7" have a 34" waste and a short inseam....the dhb reportedly have a shorter inseam than other brands i have looked at? we shall see.

    This is a GREAT VIDEO! I started gravel riding a couple of years back (Giant Revolt Advanced 2) and really enjoy the challenges of the gravel - kind of like your downhill run. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten to the bottom of a washboarded hill and commented, "YAY! I didn't DIE!"It is almost December (2023) here in northern Virginia (in the States), and I won't be riding gravel again for a few months, so it's great videos like this that help get me through! CHEERS!

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for your kind words, it was a great ride, and yes the gravel bike is just a little harder to survive downhills on! Here in the UK it is often quite hard to find gravel paths like we often see people ride in the states, but we try our best. Hope you enjoy getting back put when you can, take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    I destroyed so many things trying to fix it. Some bike locks from Abus (bt enabled), Suunto watch, even a $1700 Nikon lens with a known flaw where a doublesided tap loosens. This stuff looks essy, but needs some skill. I'd rather pay you or someone tond this for me.

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes Před 7 měsíci

      When making this I really hoped that it would help others have the confidence to 'have a go'. I understand your concern but I would say that these are not high value items anymore and are relatively simple to repair. Granted, these units are not really supposed to be user repaired as its not something that is a simple battery replacement like say a tv remote. However if you are careful and take your time then this is possible. The 520 is still a very useful little computer and is a real asset to have working to its full potential. If you decide to give it a go then best of luck. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    There are new generation gravel cranks out there with that 50-34 config from the Ultegra. Great build! (By the way, I would've been surprised if you had made that a2z crappy adaptor work!) ;)

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment! I found out now that you can get the a2z adaptor to work if used with a 180 rotor. I think you turn it around and you can get a brake caliper to fit and setup ok. Never tried it though so please dont quote me on that. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

      Thanks for the kind comment. So I can get to the bike right now as it is in storage. The headset is a mavic one which looked original. I added a 1inch to 1/8inch adaptor for the stem to fit on and that allowed me to use more modern parts. All worked out well though and I am very happy with the result. Best of luck for your project. As an early aluminium frame with large-diameter round tubes, doesn't this bike result in a harsh ride?

    • @timeforbikes

    Тоже поставил в этом году на гравийный велосипед эти шины с шириной 43 мм на 28 дюймов. На грунте стало ехать гораздо комфортнее и устойивее, чем на 37 см. WTB Riddler, стоявших в стоке до этого. Могу рекомендовать!
