  • Welcome to the third and final episode of the Klein gravel conversion. In this episode we fit all remaining parts, unbox and fit some new parts that we hope will solve the existing chainset issue, and test ride the bike on some great local tracks here in Dorset.
    There could be one rather large change in the bikes setup that will finally see the build completed to a great specification.
    Join me on this bikes final journey to completion - its going to be great!

    I really enjoyed this series. Last summer I built up an old-school Rocky Mountain Hammer Race as a gravel bike. I couldn't use 650B wheels because the frame only had V-brake mounts but already had a nice set of 26 inch wheels hanging in the garage doing nothing. Spyre disk brake on the front with cheap V-brake compatible levers. 11-speed bar end shifters and XT cranks. I got luckier than you and had to buy fewer parts and encountered fewer issues, but there's really no better way of learning about bikes than working on these transformations. And the bike is great with wide tyres.

      Thanks ever so much for your comment - its great to now others have enjoyed the series! Is also great to hear about other people's projects as well. I am glad to hear that you managed to put a great bike together for a good price, and also by reusing where possible! I have always tinkered, repaired and serviced my own bikes but this one was a learning curve as you have seen. Really enjoyable to see this conversion series! I came across it as I recently dusted off my 1998 Klein Mantra Comp (in Blastberry Chameleon) with the intention to finally sell it after 23 years of ownership. But when I cleaned it and looked it again in detail it struck me that I still love this unique bike, and that it's actually worthy of a good refreshment. So I've decided to give it some fresh tyres and some other bits and bobs and use it as a "vintage" do-it-all bike around town and some light gravelling. These Kleins are truly unique bikes that need to be cherished. Your videos are a great source of inspiration to get it back to old glory again and ride.....

    Hi Darren, I am totally inspired by your Klein Gravel Conversion videos. Thank you very much for your abundance mentality in sharing your heart work. I really wish I saw them much earlier and scrutinize them harder. Wasted hard-earned cash on some parts that didn't fit. I am currently building a 1999 Attitude into a gravel bike as well and bought a 48T chainring for a mt610 crank with similar q-factor and chainline to the XT crank you are using. Can you advise me on the largest chainring size to use without adding more extra spacers than required? I am using a BB-MT800 (deore XT). Following, I will work on the rear calipers. Bought the a2z adaptor for the rear caliper. No use.

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the brilliant comment! They really ride lovely as a gravel bike and I am sure you will not be disappointed when it's finished. So I can not really advise on the chainring size, I only ever used a 40 tooth - sorry. I would say that with the 40t it is tight. There is about 2.5mm clearance. I have no spacers on the BB on the drive side though, just one spacer on the pedal arm side. I suppose you could add a spacer on the drive side if needed but the chain line may be a little stretched one way. On the case of the caliper I was told that the a2z adapter may well work if you use a bigger rotor as it gives the caliper more clearance - I think you would need to find the right kind of caliper for this to work aswell. This is untested by me though so don't splash out on the kit unless you may have the ability to test it out before buying. Personally I am way happier doing what I did as if you have the time and a tiny amount of skill then the way I described in the video worked very well. Anyway, best of luck! Post me a picture of your bike on my Facebook site if you have chance - search up timeforbikes and you should find me there. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    Hi Darren
    In an auction I bought a 2007 Klein Attitude to convert in a fitness bike. Then on CZcams I stumbled over your project. Switching into a 650B Graveller is much much more spectacular, I'll also try. What I have to find is the right rigid fork (can also be new. If you have hints...). What hopefully makes it more easy is: There are already Shimano Disc Breaks on it :-) I guess many things on it are more Trek than Klein.
    And: I love the Hunt Wheels too. Could you tell me the exact model?
    Thanks for sharing the whole way up to this really nice custom bike!

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for all the great comments :) So the forks is a bit of an oddity. If you read up about it then some say the proper axle to crown length is as high as 470mm as you have to consider that the geometry of these bikes accounted for a 70mm suspension fork. The ones I have are about 415mm to 420mm and I feel that is adequate for this bike, but I am sure other may have something to say about that. Fork choice could be an expensive one for the build if your not careful. I have some Cannondale forks that would fit your build with a disc brake only fitting and that will take upto a 700c wheel with plenty of clarence. They are not the lightest but if I don't need them for my next project then I will let you know and you may be able to buy these. They were hard to find but keep your eye on eBay. The ones I used were made by Mosso, but these seem to have all but disappeared now. The hunt wheels are lovely. The model is 650b Adventure Sport, they come tubeless ready. I hope that help? Best of luck with the build, stay safe and happy cycling 😁👍

      A really good question. The biggest problem has been the frame size. An XL is too big for me as a gravel bike. As an MTB it could work but it's still quite big. I have an Adroit frame of a very similar era that is a large and is excellent as an MTB, but once again as a gravel bike it could still be a little too big. Nice build! I would like to ask you if any shimano (or Sram) MTB crankset will work as well as XT tour used. The problem with GRX is the chain line?

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment. The main problem is the q factor with this frame. A mtb frame like this is wide at the point on the chain stays where the crank arms pass closely. This is due to the need of the frame to accommodate a wider tyre. MTB chainsets allow for this but gravel chainsets may not, and I suspect in most if not all cases would not leading to the pedal arm and crank arms to pass too close to.the MTB frame and snag upon it. If you have not watched all.the episodes of this build the have a look again as I explain it all.there. hope this helps. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 2 lety +1

      As it is an XL frame its long and maybe a little more agressive than some would like/feel comfortable with on a gravel bike. Head Tube Reach = 460mm, Handlebar Reach = 520mm. Personally for this kind of build a large would have been better for me but you work with what you have. As I am used to aero positions on the TT and aero road bike this is not a massive issue. I feel that my handling would be better with a smaller frame with a frame though.

    Doesn't the GRX have the same spindle length as Ultegra? If it does the pedal ARM will eventually fall off.

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 4 lety

      Hi, the GRX has the same spindle length as the ultegra, and in fact all other hollotech 2 systems have the same length spindle to the best of my knowledge. The problem comes when you are trying to allow for the wider chainstays and then trying to add spacers to the bottom bracket to achieve this. The GRX has wider q factor than the ultegra and hence it is better suited to gravel bikes that have wider chainstays to to allow for wider tyres. My first thought was that the widened q factor would allow me more clearence and stop the pedal and crank arms hitting the frame as easily ' meaning that I could reduce spacing across the bottom bracket and in turn give me more of the axle to play with. This sadly was not the case. However the XT chainset totally changes things. The q factor is so wide that it allows the pedal arm and crank arm much mores space. I used a mountain bike bottom bracket (much thinner cups than road ones) and means that everything worked perfectly. Hope that makes sense?
