  • Welcome to this total restoration of a 1980 Dawes Galaxy.
    This bike was brought through cheaply through eBay, and its condition required each and every part to be restored.
    This rusty bike will be given its life back over the episodes of this mini series.
    In part one we complete an extended total strip down of the bike. We check out all the parts for wear and damage, and undertake most of the work to ready the frame for paint.
    We also detail the use of paint stripper and show the process of the choice of Hycote Paint Stripper performs.
    Stay with us as we finish this off and show you the finished bike - this is a full restoration and not some kind of pimp up.... so where possible every part taken off will go back on once restored.
    We hope you like it!
    Take care and happy cycling!

    I've just bought a 1981 version of the same bike in a similar rusty condition. Thanks for your hints re WD40 for cleaning wheel rims and kitchen foil for forks.The bike ideally should have rubber hoods on the brakes. If you search on-line you can see what the bike should look like as there is a Dawes 1981catalogue there somewhere. The original buyer also got a bargain as the catalogue price was up to £250 by then. It also had white brake and gear cables too not black. But I'm nit picking... You did a brilliant job on this restoration and I learnt a lot.Thanks again.

      Thanks for the comment. I thought I may have taken on a little too much at the beginning but it came out great. I hope your restoration pans out just how you want - they are great bikes. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

    Great work and thanks for the dawes history. I was lucky to find a Dawes Galaxy al 2010s bike outside my daughters nieghours. Unfortunately it had 26inch mtb wheels fitted, I'm gradually building back using as much as possible free parts. I managed to find a Dawes ladies tourer a wreck apart from wheels and seat post. Now swapped to mine, but recently swapped the front wheel for a bontrager race lite from Freecycle. I just need to sort the brakes, and tyres which are the one piece I will have to pay for.
    A tip for cleaning pitted rusted chrome is tin foil scrunched up in water then used liked sand paper works well though the forks maybe too rusted. You can also use coke instead of water.

      Thanks for the great comment. Sounds like you have a great project. I love bikes at all levels of expense, and I am a massive fan of getting bikes that are doomed for the dustbin and getting them restored so they can be enjoyed once again. Hope the project works out well for you. Take care and happy cycling!

      @@Hertog_von_Berkshire Sound like you have your hands full. After this there is a very nice project that I have lined up. Something similar to what I have already shown on this channel but it is a little bit more special. Would be great to know what bikes you are working on.

      Hi Andy. That could be my bike too. - ‘cept its brown. Purchased 1980 from bike shop near Sloane Square - 90 pounds. Road it from Golders Green to The Haymarket every day for 6 months then took it home to Aotearoa New Zealand. Used it to commute to work for years. Matt, my younger son road it from Auckland to Wellington -he simply headed off and kept on riding. 400 miles 600 kms. It now needs a full restoration. At 71 I wonder if I’m up to it. We will see. After watching this video it seems easy! Yeah right. Ha. Great bikes eh. Got a Brompton recently - great fun.

      Hi Simon. Great story. I bought the bike back off the guy who restored it! I take it for a spin now and again up here in Scotland. Like you I have other bikes but this is my favourite, like a familiar comfy armchair. I rode it to work every day when i bought it in 1980 and did rides in UK, Ireland and France. We lived in NZ for a year and great place to cycle. @@SimonBrowneNZ

    Great work, BUT hammering the HS cups out with the top tube clamped in a bike stand!!?😯

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 3 lety

      Hi, thanks for your comments. Good point about the clamping location. The headset cups were very easy to get out of this frame but you are right to be a little concerned. Please believe me when I say that this did not hurt the frame at all, had it been a more delicate frame material like a thin aluminium or carbon then it could have been a disaster and something that would have never happen. Any clampng on these frames would have been on the seat post only..Thanks for pointing this out for others who may have read these comments. I am glad you enjoyed the video. I am currently constructing the third and final video now so check back soon to see how it all turns out. If you subscribe you should be notified when any future episodes are released. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

      @@timeforbikes Good stuff and don't get me wrong - I'm loving your work! For all high torque/force stuff I'd take the bike off the stand, e.g. stuck pedals or hammering. If the HS cups were loose, then I get it. Looking forward to the next instalment. Did you lacquer/clear-coat the paint?

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 3 lety

      Hi Chuck, the 3rd and final episode is on its way. As for lacquer, yes I did manage to get a nice few coats on the frame. I actually sprayed over the decals with the lacquer - not something I would do again as an edge or two of the decal started to lift. I got away with it really as it was 99% perfect but it was a learning process for sure. Thanks for your comment though Chuck - really appreciated :)

    • @timeforbikes
      @timeforbikes  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi, thanks for the kind words and sub! If I remember I paid about £35 for it. It was rough though and the pictures on ebay showed this and may have put off quite a few people from bidding. Hopefully you get a bargain! Take care and happy cycling!

    Can you have a look at the audio levels in your upcoming videos? The music is really loud and the speech is fairly quiet, I find myself riding the volume dial the entire time to be able to understand what you're saying.
