Restoring the Galaxy - Rusty Bike Restoration - Part 3 The BEST rebuild so far!

- Welcome to the final part of the total restoration this 1980 Dawes Galaxy.
This bike was brought cheaply through eBay, and its condition required each and every part to be restored.
This rusty bike will be given its life back over the episodes of this mini series.
In Part 3 we rebuild the bike using the restored original parts. As the project approaches its finale the bike emerges back into the beauty that had not been admired for over twenty years.
However - Time For Bikes could not hold onto her for long - a visit from the bikes old best friend ensured that it quickly disappeared from the workshop for ever. Come along and watch how the project ended. Also covered is the cost of the referb, and we detail if we made any money on the final deal on the bike.

Why do blokes like their bikes so much? 2 reasons I reckon. Old bikes are pieces of art made by craftsmen. And when you ride them, you are putting your life on the line; if they break, you could be killed in the crash. Andy is one lucky bloke. I have an almost identical bike in similar not quite so bad condition. My bike is brown. Same badge though. I purchased it second hand 1980. I was going to sell it. No way now. I will bring it back to as good as I can. I used to work on it after reading Richard’s Bike Book. I can do that again. I’m inspired. Thanks for the video; lovely finish. Lovely 👏, thanks for dripping by and leaving such a nice comment. There are some tell tell signs when a bike is just too far gone to repair but this was not the case here. It was a pleasure being able to hand the bike back to the original owner. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
I have just started to restore my old (1992) Dawes Synthesis, today (5/4/24😊). Had it from new (£250 I think) from Downham Market and road it all the way to Northampton. After my first bike was stolen 😮. How strange, life is. Started by just pumping up the tyres and then felling sorry for neglecting her for 18 years. Then just come across your vlog with the Dawes restoration. I shall do a slow but full restoration. The paint job, is still as good as new. Credit to the Dawes painter 😊 and the tyres are in good shape too😊.

Well done! I just got myself a 20ish-year old Dawes Horizon - the aluminium version of the Galaxy. Fortunately it's still in good working order and doesn't need restoration like this one. Great bikes and well worth keeping.

Fantastic series! I just bought a 1970 Dawes Galaxy, I plan on doing just this to it, but keep it and ride it every day. But there is only one colour for it - BRITISH RACING GREEN! :D Cheers from Canada!!!
Sounds like a great plan. My problem is that my workshop is alway way too full of bikes and this one had a great story aswell when it found its previous owner once again. Nice work on those mud guards! I have an old German tourer that I bought as a pub crawler for cheap and which may get the same treatment. Right now I just pulled the guards and the rack off to use as a winter road bike.
Those mudguards were in a really bad state when I got the bike, but I was shocked just how well they came up. They were the originals apparently so I wanted to keep the bike as original as possible and I think it paid off for sure. 🙂👍

Some of the older galaxies have 27 1/4 in wheelsets. But for touring outside the UK you need a size where tyres are easilly available. Sadly there's a cascade of work involved in changing this but for general UK use they have many strengths.

Other bike on the invoice: Claud Butler Majestic. Wonder what colour it was and what happened to it? Gotta love Majestics .
The owner still has it and it need restoring aswell. I may do it one day but its all time dependent. Thanks for the comment :)

Top video. I've just purchased a 1990 Dawes Horizpn. It's frame forks and handlebars. Nothing else. Any tip or guide on where to buy parts to build it most welcome.. I'm particularly unsure of what style of dureillier to get. What hangar type it needs, or you used please?
Thanks for the nice comment! Ok, so the hanger I used was the original that came with the bike. I expect our bikes are very different to one another, so the hangers will probably be too. I suggest getting onto one of the Dawes bikes Facebook groups and ask the question as I am sure sombody should be able to help you. If not then just take the frame to your local independent bike shop and see if they can find out which hanger you need and get them to order it. Also search the internet for any information on what groupsets (gears, brakes, etc) were fitted to your bike originally and go from there. It may be worth asking others on the Facebook pages what gears could be fitted to that frame. I am sorry I can not help any further but the answers are probably age and bike specific. I hope this helps a little bit in getting the information you need. Take care and happy cycling!

👌9:37 Mudflap: a very important bike part, unfortunately disregarded these days by snobs who think mud-splattered clothing and Bikes are cool.
