    Love the rim/tyre restoration + wire wool on the headset. Need to do that to my daily rider: Dawes Linear 531 with Shimano RX100, Mavic rims and a rusty headset

    • @Bikespeeds
      @Bikespeeds  Před rokem

      It’s very simple and very rewarding. For tough rust a bit of wd40 sprayed onto the wire wool is a good trick🧡

    As you will no-doubt be aware, Dawes are considered something of a budget brand these days (though back in the day, they were very much more mid-table) having said that, I can confirm that they make a perfectly acceptable/robust modern steed, not super-light, but nonetheless a really capable all-rounder. Chapeau Sir, another earthbound 'flying-machine' saved from landfill.

      Are you sure? Dawes have the highest possible reputation for touring bikes. If you're going to go and ride the length of a continent, it's probably a Dawes you'd choose.

    • @gregtaylor6146
      @gregtaylor6146 Před 2 lety +2

      @@MikeAG333 - THIS is NOT a classic Dawes steel 'tourer' though is it? much rather a BSO, from a once fine British company whose products now rely of cheap far-eastern labour and is made from a material far less suited to that task.

      I've recently assembled up a steel dawes 300. Competition Giro with Shimano 6401 parts. What level would a bike be? Did I put nice things on a lousy bike?

    I loved the road bikes made by Peugeot during the late 80's. My favourite Dawes bike was the Super Galaxy tourer. I used to own a Dawes Wildcat mountain bike in the late 80's, bright yellow with red cable outers 😊

    Inspired me to get that old 90s bike in my shed cleaned and restored. Despite its age, the Shimano SIS still changes perfectly and everything spins smoothly so I think it’s lasted well despite the layer of grime

    Im new to bike restoration, i notice you didn’t take the bearing out of the wheels .
    This may sound a daft question. We’re do you decide to strip the bearing and we’re do you decide to leave .
    Wheels are always my worry .
    And videos you have done that you have done you can recommend me to watch

    • @jakubwierzbicki6219
      @jakubwierzbicki6219 Před 2 lety +1

      This is very interesting, the derailleur here looks to be rd-m340 which was an 7/8 speed part for at cheap hybrid bikes from I think early 00's [edit: 2002 to be exact], visually mimicking the XT model from 200 while everything else on this bike screams early 90's and road (or roadish) groupsets. Even an Hercules bike I bought in circa 2004 had an Acera but it was rd-330, so an older model (which looked so much nicer than this one here). I'd expect one of the Exage derailleurs on this bike, but I guess it is jut not quite as old as it looks to me.
      Fun(?) fact: when Shimano introduced the large jockey wheels in the cheap groupsets the marketing says it was to reduce chain friction as the chain is not bent as much while going through them, however everyone agreed it was a way to make them visually different (read: uglier) then the higher-end mechs which had smaller jockey wheels.
      Now days all of the Shimano derailleurs top to bottom have small jockey wheels, however you can buy large non-shimano replacements for the very top-end derailleurs for insane money. How are those marketed? Well, these large jockey wheels save watts by reducing chain friction as it is not bent as much.
