    I absolutely love this channel and visit it daily. It got me to look at my bike very differently and gave me the confidence to clean different components with ease. Took my front bracket and chain wheel out and cleaned it by hand, because I was so annoyed how dirty it was for years. Hard to clean without taking it off.

    If I remember correctly the lower headset part you removed is a converter to use loose bearings, it should be left in there, the crown race on the fork is for a sealed bearing (not for loose balls to run on it, the ball bearings will wear the crown race on the fork).
    You can remove the black cups in the frame and fit sealed bearings (weird design but it's pretty good for serviceability)

    Love your videos! Lesson learned about cleaning components. Was doing a restore on a vintage SunTour grouppo. Decided to get off the gunk by tossing them in a dishwasher with name brand dishwashing detergent. Took off the first layer of gunk but also the shine. Came out grey and dull. Spent more time polishing than the rest of the project.

    My bikes are both of this vintage: 3x9 cyclocross bike that I put together myself; hybrid Campagnolo/Shimano drivetrain b/c I like Ergopower better. 2nd bike is a fixed/free combo with Surly duo-cog & White Industries dual freewheel on back; double crank up front. 3rd bike is a Tern folder; just your basic 1x8, but gears retrofitted by me to the ratios I want. Rear derailleur takeup is the limiting factor; would prefer a wider range on back. Might switch to 1x9 for better parts interchangeability.

    Thank you for doing vids of bikes from different eras and spec levels.
    Was this a 2011 Allez Triple? Would you characterize that headset as one of the (ultimately short-lived) proprietary ‘Specialized Mindset’ semi-integrated headsets?
    I have a 2009 Allez and just last month needed to replace such a headset. The shop mechanic that did the job (put in a Cane Creek 40-series w/ IS41 cartridge bearings) found it less straightforward than the Internet forums we consulted suggested. In the end it required a little bit of witchcraft, and the fit within the head tube bore has us curious how well/long it will hold adjustment.
    Small plug that IF you get a bike in that needs that type of replacement job, IMO, CZcams doesn’t have a clearly authoritative and well-shot video on the topic.

If I came across a bike with a seized crankarm it would mainly be when a bike was beyond economical repair, due to other drivetrain elements and parts that were also seized. I think you’ve stuffed this one up bud. That crown race is the lower remains of the cartridge bearing no? The black races in the frame are the outside shell of the cartridge bearing. The bearing looks nothing like a standard loose ball bearing. The seals are all just gone. The crown race on the fork is alloy? and has no convex shape to run a bearing, it’s going to do some dangerous damage to that fork running a loose bearing on a sealed crown race.

    • @paulsymons562
      @paulsymons562 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Came here to say the same. There are two failed cartridge bearings there, top and bottom. Hes just removed the lower part of the bearing and now the balls are running directly on the alloy conical seat of the fork. The forks will be buggered pdq.

      @@Jonbsp :-) oh yes. that Shimano premium grease is so low friction you can use races made of butter soft aluminium with no worries! At least the tyre logos line up and the bolts all have a torque wrench clicked in them. Note I didn't say the torques checked as just clicking the wrench around in bolts you haven't done up from loose only tells you if a fastener is too loose, not if its too tight.

    Never trust a workshop as neat as this one is. They hide their mess in the drawers and cupboards.

    I restore motorcycles non professionally. Have no idea how I got here, really enjoyed the work but I have only one niggle. When working on finished metal parts, never do it on a hard surface, even polished wood.

    I don't want to be picky unpolite, but you have to stop tightening those saddle bolts!! Can't you see that it actually changes its angle as you clamp it? It tilts up, so either do both bolts or don't do them at all, maybe someone has had a bike fit done, and that small of a change can mess with a position on the bike. Please!
