DREAM BIKE BUILD - 1996 Klein Quantum Restomod

- Welcome to the DREAM BIKE BUILD - 1996 Klein Quantum Restomod. Finished in an almost flawless Caribbean Linear Fade paint scheme, this Klein is sure to shine when out on the road. Klein were well known for one off paint finishes and customisation, and this one has a quirky finish of its own with no model embossed upon the top tube as they usually would be.
The frame started life with a French triathlete back when new and had a very easy life with very little use - this explains the overall condition!
Eventually the frame was sold to the previous owner who was living in Devon, UK. This early frame has a 1 inch threaded steerer and needed to be adapted to allow the fitment of the chosen Zipp stem. Due to the length of the film one lengthily job not shown was the installation (not replacement!!!) of the plastic frame gear cable guides and frame inserts - now that is a tough job. Overall a bike I have long wished to build and own - she is a beaut!
I am extremely pleased with the finish of this bike, and look forward to riding it as soon as my shoulder injury repairs.
Overall the bike cost = £1696.00
Minus value for parts already owned = £370.00
Actual money spent £1326.00
Finished weight = 7.72kg

2 years later and this build still stands up to the test of time.. Im inspired to upgrade my Klein Q Carbon now..
Thanks! This build is sitting waiting to be ridden right now. I can't wait to get back out on it. If you decide to upgrade your Q Carbon then I hope it turns out as you dream it to. Awesome bikes. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Very nice build! Shows also how timeless some of these 80's Klein bikes are, I guess. ZIPPed up with some fresh parts it looks great again. Nice job!
Hi @Adri vdw, thanks for the great comment. As you well know these bikes can still shine in the sun just like yours! I am super happy with this bike. Its now replacing my Cevelo S5 as it needs some work - and I can tell you that it rides very similar - probably better on the hills as well. The frame colour in real life is amazing - its a stunner!
Such a beautiful bike. Love the paint job.
Thanks! It is a lovely old bike 👍 the paint job is awesome in the sunlight. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
ah...klein. those factory paintjob is enough to stands against time.. awesome build!
I honestly fall more in love with this bikes paint job every time I look at it. Yes there are faster bikes out there but this still gets loads of kudos while on the road. Thanks for commenting, take care and happy cycling!
Beautiful work
Thanks - this bike is a stunner in the flesh and it rides great for an oldie. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
I love this bike build Klein are great bikes love the updated parts excellent all around build up
Thanks my friend. She is lovely that's for sure 😊. Great bike and still does fairly well against newer and more expensive race bikes. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
I LOVE IT!
She is a real treat to own that's for sure. Thanks for the comment. Take care and happy cycling!

Great Job mate!
Thanks for the lovely comment. Take care and happy cycling!
Beautiful!
Thank you. Every time I look at the paint I fall in love with it a little more. Thanks for commenting. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
@@timeforbikes Thank you. I would also like such a bike. I have been looking for a frame from Klein for some time, unfortunately it is probably a rarity in our country. I hope to be lucky in the future. Have a nice time and enjoy this wonderful bike .. :-)
Awesome 👍
Thanks Hugo! It really turned out better than I thought it would - perfect for me. Make sure to like and subscribe! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
What a brilliant build!!!! great to see you riding the fred whitton on aswell!!
I love this bike and it has become the new summer bike. 'The Fred' was/is an awesome event! Thanks for commenting, take care and happy cycling! 🙂👍
Something about the thick tubing of the Klein Quantum's that make them so aesthetically appealing as well as the paint colors.
When riding them the tubes look amazing from above as well! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍 my
Good job on this restomod. How is the ride in this Klein? I heard it’s a bit stiff but it accelerates immediately when you start to pedal.
Sorry for the late reply! The bike is stiff for sure, but I also ride a very stiff cervelo s5 so I didn't really notice any difference. This would have been a bullet back in the day. Handles quite well and is not all that much slower than my cervelo. Overall it's a quality ride and people absolutely love it when they see it being ridden 🙂👍
@@timeforbikes Thanks for the feedback and comparison to your Cervelo S5 (another awesome bike). Cheers!!
Very nice 👍🏼
Thanks Paul! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
I just purchased an identical bike a few days ago with plans on a similar build. I might be reaching out for some advice shortly. Yours looks awesome!!
Great, they are lovely bikes. Let us know how you get on and feel free to ask for advice.. Don't forget to like the video and subscribe to the channel. 🙂👍
I have the same bike in the orange/red/yellow color. Love it! I'm definitely an amateur cyclist though so I'm learning as I go moves mostly stock, and like my vehicles, I sun to get rid of any shiny chrome like metal, even polished aluminum of I can. Being on a budget, I started by painting the head tribe spacers black (properly with an etching primer, filet primer, then flat black. I was originally going to carry this on throughout the bike but decided otherwise, especially when I realized titanium cannot be painted while stepping on the dura ace seat stem.
Like yours, mine is in pretty good shape, only a couple little dings in the paint which I addressed with either red or yellow paint open to do any potential rust. I'm aware that aluminum shouldn't rust but I've seen otherwise depending on the alloys.
The items you choose for your build, all of them, are basically the way I imagine I would like to see my bike having. I've deemed painting anything other than spacers and rims beyond my capabilities for the professional results I demand. If you don't mind, side from wheels and tires, what did everything come out to? Would you have done anything different? Congrats on the build,I think it looks cleaner than it did when it was new!
Please forgive my lack of editing 🫣
So sorry for the lack of reply! Thanks for telling me all about your Klein. Thanks for the comments on the bike, I am happy with it and come summer once again I will have it back out. This build was a little while ago now and I am just not sure what it all came to now. The prices were still very high for cycling bits then so I paid a fairly hefty sum for all the bits. Overall its a lovely bike and rides surprisingly well against even against the more modern bikes. I just need to get fit now and it will go much faster! Thanks for stopping by, take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Nice beautiful bike.
I have really fallen in love with it since it was built. Thanks for the comment, More builds to come so make sure to subscribe! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍

登録済みです。ありがとうございます。Thankyou verymuch.
holy phuck, that's beautiful
Oh yeah she is. I am really happy with this bike and still ride it loads. Lots of kudos on the road!
Too funny! I just got a Quantum Race from '96 same colors in great condition (barn find). Checking Quantum rebuilds on CZcams coming across your beauty. I just stripped the old 600 groupset off mine and will rebuild with a silver 105 and silver Hunt alloy wheels. But yours is a great resurrection too. SO much fun! :-)
Welcome to the channel, and I am so glad that you found this build and enjoyed watching it. The Quantum frames are still good performers against modern bikes, and our paint jobs usually look amazing when compared to them as well. Due to a racing accident back in June 2021 my race bike still needs a bit of work - this bike has taken its place and if I am honest I don't seem to be rushing to get the other one fixed. Not sure I would race it but it's a lovely summer bike. Enjoy your build and let me know when you have finished your build as I would love to see a picture of it. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
@@timeforbikes Will Do! Some parts are still coming in (wheels and FD) - Just requested a follow on strava ;-) - All best for 2022 and Happy New Year!
@@TheTubalicious Same to you! Will be nice to see the result when you have it all together! 🙂👍
Just purchased a Quantum Race. Doing a restomod build as well.
Would love to see the end result. Get some pics and let us know where they can be viewed when finished! Best of luck 🙂👍
❤
Preciosa.
Thankyou! Take care and happy cycling!🙂👍
Correct me if I'm wrong. The frame seems is made of aluminium and the RD hanger is not of the replaceable type. In the case of it being badly bent due to crashes it would be very difficult to bend it back without comprising its strength and integrity.
You are correct. Some of the later Klein frames had replaceable hangers. I had better not crash it!!!! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Nice build and wonderful video! I love klein bikes, I have a quantum pro I'm using regularly plus a quantum race frame in that colour (Caribbean linear fade) which is waiting a proper build since 10 years...maybe I can use it to try my mechanical skills and properly assemble it!
A question, which product is the red stuff you use everywhere?
Hi, the red stuff is just a universal bicycle grease I have. I brought it some time ago as it came with a nice little gun for applying it. So in truth it's nothing special. Putting the bike together is not all that hard if you have attempted many other fixes on your bike. The hardest bit I did not show as it would have been confusing and also lengthened the video too much - this was the when I had to put new plastic inner cable routing in the frame along with new frame inserts. If you don't have them installed then it may take some time longer to complete. Anyway, thanks for the great comment. Take care and happy cycling! 🙂👍

A very ordinary looking bike
Not something you would like to ride then? For its age I think it has taken the step into its future quite well. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Well done! Mine (1994 Klein quantum 2 moonrise linear fade) is almost finish !! Can't wait to ride it :)
Your BB was already threaded ? Mine is a square taper press fit old klein BB so I can't put any modern crank.
Moonrise is a fantastic colour, it's going to look great I am sure. My bike sounds a little later in production date than yours, and while I love early Klein's ( I have an epic Klein to restore on camera very soon and that's a holy grail Klein for sure) I am very glad that this has the threaded bottom bracket. My seat post is also held in with a seat clamp and doesn't just use a bolt like I expect yours does. I rode mine 65miles today - my first longer ride since injuring my shoulder in a race accident (video about that on my channel) and I will say it was honestly a total joy. I am sure you will be in love with it very quickly! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Awesome build, it turned out beautiful! What did you end up putting over the headset to get it to look like that instead of the gap between the stem and the quill adaptor? Haven’t seen that before.
Hi Josh, thanks for the great comment. This one did turn out well. It might just be buying the correct quill adaptor. I think this is the one I used: Deda Elementi Men's Spada Quill Stem Adapter, Black, 22.2mm / 25.4mm www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0083QRHAE/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_HZSM1GGJPFYDNFB4HE0W
However if you mean the silver part to the top of the headset then that is just the headset it's self. I believe it's a Mavic headset from back in the day. I will check it later though to see if there was something else I used. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Love your build and it looks great! I have a Q Carbon Pro and was going to go with Ultegra 8000 and new HED wheels. How did your clearance end up in the front and what size tires did you end up with? Thanks!
Thanks for the lovely comment. So tyre wise I used 25mm on my Zipp 303 firecrest. Clearance on the front was fine, it's close on the rear though. Sounds like your Quantum will be a really nice bike if you have done everything you want to do to it. Please look up time for bikes up on Facebook if you can and when finished post some pics of your finished bike. Would like to see it! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Beautiful build. Did you find it necessary to adjust the width of the rear triangle to accommodate 11 speed cassette?
No, fitted just fine! Thanks for the comment, take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
How did you get past Square Taper pressfit BB?
I would imagine that my bike was one of the first of the trek/klein era - and hence a threaded bottom bracket was a standard. The paintwork is definitely a Klein job though. Thanks for stopping by, take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Very sweet bike,
What headset you have on this bike? I got 98's Pina Monviso and I would like to fit a low stack headset like yours> Thank you!
Thanks for the kind comment. So I can get to the bike right now as it is in storage. The headset is a mavic one which looked original. I added a 1inch to 1/8inch adaptor for the stem to fit on and that allowed me to use more modern parts. All worked out well though and I am very happy with the result. Best of luck for your project. Take care and happy cycling!
@@timeforbikes Thank you for the info.
my headset is Gran Cru, very good but a bit tall for me, I will try to find the mavic one.
Enjoy your bike!
Really Nice bike ! I'm curently restore a 2003 Klein Q Carbon and It's time for me to change de rear brake cable. But I'm little bit affraind about the internal cable routine. How do you do it on yours ? Thanks
Hi, thanks for commenting! I am hoping to put some videos together on this subject and other basic maintenance processes in the near future. To save lots of explanation though I would recommend the following video to give a decent explanation of how it can be done. If you find this useful.please consider liking my video and subscribing to the channel. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍 czcams.com/video/QZaGL83RMFI/video.html
@@timeforbikes Thanks for your advices. It's a good to know than Klein internal routine correspond to the standard (rare thing in cycling mechanics). I'm now a new follower of your channel ! Looking foward more Klein Videos ;)
@@clementdelhaye9375 I have a very nice and rare Klein to restore in the future. It's been tough to get new content out but it will be coming in future. That's for the sub. Let me know how your project progresses 👍
Very Nice build. Did you restore the paint yourself?
That paint is factory original and absolutely stunning. In real life the colours pop so well. This frame is in unbelievable condition for a 1996 frame. The frame had very little use in during its life and you can tell when you see it. The bike currently sits in my house and each time the it catches my eye it makes me fall for it a little more. Thanks for commenting, Take care and happy cycling!
Klein had the best factory paint jobs IMO. Stunning.
As an early aluminium frame with large-diameter round tubes, doesn't this bike result in a harsh ride?
Yeah, it can be a little harsh, but I I ride a cervelo S5 and that is fairly harsh as well - especially for a carbon bike. Overall it is a lovely bike to ride! Thanks for commenting, take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Klein's are beautiful, too bad they are such a harsh ride for my old bones. I would have preferred to see build up with polished silver Shimano groupset such as DA7700 or 7800. The all black components just aren't as classy.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. You are right that they can produce a harsh ride. However, that could be ironed out a little if you used modern tubeless rims and ran them at lower pressures. Also I totally understand your view on groupsets. 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and all that, this was just my modern take and it's great that my race wheels from my other bike fit this bike with no need to change cassette. Also the shifting and braking performance is amazing. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
My 1997 looks identical, only 16 speed and I am on fence if I should spend time and money to bring it into 21st century
Hi Paul and thanks for commenting. As you will have seen mine was only a frame when I brought it and I could have gone either way in bringing it back to life. I needed a bike that would keep up with other out on our club ride, and hence I wanted to squeeze as much performance out of it as I could. There are obvious way I could have made it lighter and better still, but some of those mods just did not make sense on a older frameset. I was curious about the difference between ultegra and Dura ace level equipment as I have never had Dura ace on even my race bikes due to the cost of replacement if I wrecked it. But this time I thought I would give some bits a go. I am sure the carbon wheels would transform your bike in terms of performance (if that's what your after) but Dura ace level equipment doesn't make all that much difference when compared with ultegra if I am honest. Best of luck in choosing what to do - and yes this bike can keep up with modern carbon bikes well enough now! Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Is this an aluminium frame?.
Yeah it's aluminium, it may fool some as Klein were good at finishing the welds to a very smooth, clean finish. I think the forks are carbon and alloy - that could be wrong though as I have not fully investigated that. Beautiful bikes for sure. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
Could you plz add what parts you have used?

@@timeforbikes It does a lot! I have a 1995 Quantum II with 70(!) Kilometres use at home which needs some love. Unfortunately I am not a bike tech so I am currently looking what to upgrade as I want to use it again.
Sounds good - enjoy the build. The great thing about looking at this build is that it will take some of the guess work out of buying stuff. As long as it has a threaded bottom bracket then this setup should work well with yours. Let me know when you have finished as I would love to see a pic of the build! Take care and happy cycling!
@@timeforbikes The project died. My frame has the old non standard press fit bottom bracket :( I am going to scrap it :(
@@christianfranzke6398 that's a massive shame. I hope you don't mean scrap the bike itself? Do you have any other plans for it?
Whats the bike that was always hanging in Jerry Seinfeld apartment
Hi, thanks for stopping by and commenting. The bike you are thinking of was a Klein Pinnacle. Check this out for a little more detail: classiccycleus.com/home/seinfeld-klein/?
Hope that helps . Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
old bike need old group set for good looking!
Hi Jake, thanks for commenting. I can appreciate you view. For this one I wanted to maximise the performance of this bike as it had to take the place of my race bike that was sadly damaged in my recent accident. Personally I feel it looks beautiful right now, but in the future it may well be changed back to original spec. Take care and happy cycling 🙂👍
I'd disagree. Tasteful restoration serves the bike justice.
@@cd0u50c9 totally agree. I am not sure the modern wheels, finishing kit, and groupset are what makes your eyes pops out when looking at this bike - for me it's the amazing colour and frame condition. That bike can wear any bling and pull it off. Thanks for commenting. Take care and happy cycling 😁👍
