    Flying to a tiny island over a long distance without sufficient gas reserves was already extremely risky. Add to that negligently inadequate planning and preparation, radio navigation equipment that was unreliable and not yet fully developed at the time, RDF transmissions on an unsuitable shortwave frequency, a defective radio system or antenna, etc., etc., and it couldn't end well. Conclusion: was her own fault - if you put yourself in danger, you'll die!

    If they pilot controlling thrust would have accounted for the input to action delay and added power to the right engine 5 seconds sooner, they would have landed level. I get the pilots did amazing overall but they could have landed level and possibly saved the 111 people that died

  • @AParallelReality
    @AParallelReality Před 21 dnem

    I don’t get why they decided to land wing first. It seems way more dangerous than landing level even at the expense of falling faster

    For every Captain Haynes… there’s a FO Bonin. Ouch

  • @AParallelReality
    @AParallelReality Před 23 dny

    Everyone says FO Bonin was a terrible pilot and panicked but I still think it was intentional. While communication was bad, there were 7 clear requests for him to not touch controls, which he ignored and kept pulling back. There is no emergency that calls for a 5 min pull back reaction so I’m left thinking he did it on purpose

    I read that she was blown off course at night by 150 miles so headed for Gardner island concerned about fuel running low. If she thought she was near Howland island why would she go to Gardner island instead? She had the 250 foot long wire aerial and winching apparatus removed. Presumably to save weight (my theory). Therefore the fixed aerial was too short to be efficient. The U.S. Naval Institute report which I read recently said signals were received after she would have run out of fuel and crashed into the sea and bearings on her plane taken and that's why a search was conducted around Gardner island. It was said transmissions would have coincided when the tide was out to run the engines to power the radio which also one radio operator said there was no "hum" (engine noise) suggesting the plane was not in the air. At low tide the propellers would not be in the water. The d.f. frequencies were not ideal and too high because she got confused between frequency and wavelength. There was no fresh water on the island so they would get dehydrated and there were three foot crabs to consume any bodies. Read the report, I'd say it points to them having landed.

  • @gordonelwell7084
    @gordonelwell7084 Před 25 dny

    Of your three "theories", the one regarding Gardner Island does have evidence, just no confirmed aircraft wreckage. There is a sextant case, a piece of aluminum skin conveniently the same size as the patch over a read window known to be on Earhart's plane, the various jars of cream and such she was known to have and use, the bones that were conveniently "lost" after a preliminary analysis, and the dozens of radio calls heard throughout the globe, including Pan Am tracking stations that triangulate to Gardner Island. Many of the radio calls were discounted because of the words thought to be "New York City" were transmitted over and over. But nobody at the time connected the dots that the ship wreck on Gardner Island was a ship with the name "Norwich City" painted prominently on the bow and stern. If a person was sending a distress radio call, they would include the name of the Island (if they knew it), or some other prominent landmark that would be known by rescuers, like the name of the large, prominent (and likely well known wreck Norwich City). Over the often fuzzy and static radio calls, "Norwich City" can easily be confused with "New York City", especially when the listener is not a rescue team member, but rather plain civilian or someone not necessarily familiar with specific details of the search area. So I believe there is ample evidence that the Gardner Island is by far the scenario that played out, and a properly funded deep sea expedition off the coast of the island near where the landing gear image is sticking out of the water would likely discover the remains of the Electra (big parts like the engines at least). The "theories" about the spying on the Japanese and subsequent capture, and/or hiding in NJ in plain sight are just completely ridiculous and should not even be included in a serious analysis of the mystery.

    • @bill-2018
      @bill-2018 Před 25 dny

      I agree with you. I read the report from the U.S. Naval Institute the other day and it seems to me they landed especially since radio calls were made after the fuel would have run out.

    This is actually not the first time a commercial aircraft has bounced off the water. In 1996 Aeroperú Flight 603 bounced off the water as well, shortly before they crashed into the water for the second and final time in the darkness. After the first impact the crew realized the aircraft had stuck the water and attempted to climb but damage to the aircraft caused it to roll to the left and crash. It must’ve been terrifying for all onboard. 😢

    @danielfox9461 Před 26 dny

    What is the point of having emergency procedures if part of said procedure is to send highly trained but entirely unequipped rescuers out to a very likely injured victim without either the proper resources to effectively render aid nor the transportation required to rush them to a place where such resources are available. To leave the rescuers and victim playing cards for 30 mins while a completely separate vehicle and team show up with what u should have had to begin with when this whole operation was planned out, is ludicrous and would be laughable if someones life weren't in the balance

    I am based at Batam, flying amphib Twin Otter. I was flying this day and was listening to all this on the radio. First, all this happened during late afternoon, about 5pm local time, not at night. The weather around Batam at this time was also very challenging, with big thunderstorms all around. I made it within 13 NM from Batam, but I had to divert to a small airport east of Batam. The ground staff at Batam, reported low level warnings coming from the cockpit. Also even though, Batam has a 4000 meters, big runway, the crew had issues refueling the airplane next day as Singapore Airlines do not have any engineering staff on Batam. Finally in radio communications, it not Batam airport, it's Hang Nadim airport.

    Despite pilot training that a go-around is always the safest way to discontinue an approach, obviously this is not true, it's just true at least 99.99% of the time. There are times when go-around isn't the safest thing to do. If you're on fire, or very low on fuel. Or if you did a really hard landing (Air Canada 621) or wheels up landing (PIA) and don't know what damage has been done to the aircraft. In emergency situations, it is permitted to break SOP (to the minimum extent required to make the situation tolerable) and ignore GPWS sink rate/pull up, land outside the touchdown zone, continue an approach below minimums, or even autoland in zero visibility or using an ILS not approved for autoland. For passenger survival it is better to go off the end or side of the runway having had even a few seconds of hard braking and maximum reverse thrust, than to land off-field or crash into unknown terrain or obstacles at flying speed. The pilots need to have mentally rehearsed these options and know when it is appropriate to use them.

    Excellent airmanship and CRM, recognizing that 2 fuel pressure warnings is too much to be okay with and diverting, keeping track of their glide ratio without any other guidance and deciding against Winnipeg, using ATC for just crucial info needed and staying focused on flying the plane, using a forward slip to increase drag instead of a 360 which would have been disastrous, and safely getting it to a stop.
